[Bug 160763] Re: Acer Aspire 5720 hangs on second resume from suspend, i.e. suspends only once [BIOS PROBLEM]

2010-05-31 Thread Enrico Gueli
Maxim, the userspace program works for me!
I successfully suspended the laptop three times in a row.

Now I'm trying to put the command on a resume script, so I won't need to
think about it anymore :)

[Bug 160763] Re: Acer Aspire 5720 hangs on second resume from suspend, i.e. suspends only once [BIOS PROBLEM]

2010-05-31 Thread Enrico Gueli
Just my little contribution:
1- copy writereg and make_s2ram_work to /usr/sbin
2- copy the attached script to /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d

This will make make_s2ram_work everytime the system is resumed.

[Bug 160763] Re: Acer Aspire 5720 hangs on second resume from suspend, i.e. suspends only once [BIOS PROBLEM]

2010-05-22 Thread Enrico Gueli
No good news for now :( With 2.6.34 kernel (with no patches applied),
suspend doesn't even work once. Even with a raw echo mem
/sys/power/state, the kernel freezes somewhere just before entering
suspend state. But this problem is outside this bug, I hope to solve it
soon.

Best regards, Enrico

[Bug 160763] Re: Acer Aspire 5720 hangs on second resume from suspend, i.e. suspends only once [BIOS PROBLEM]

2010-05-21 Thread Enrico Gueli
Maxim... you're AWESOME!! Thanks for the effort!!

I've tried to apply the patch against the 2.6.34 kernel from git, but
patch prints a strange output:

Hunk #1 succeeded at 213 (offset -3 lines).
Hunk #2 succeeded at 590 with fuzz 2 (offset 292 lines).

Indeed, it applies the hunk #2 to a completely different function
(acpi_hibernation_finish()) rather than acpi_suspend_finish(), that
simply doesn't exist in my sleep.c. Obviolusly, that doesn't work

Are you currently using some unofficial kernel branch?

Thanks!

[Bug 160763] Re: Acer Aspire 5720 hangs on second resume from suspend, i.e. suspends only once

2009-08-13 Thread Enrico Gueli
Sorry to reply so late to post #50, I thought I did it already. mrrusof, my
hypotesis is that the Acer developers wrote a driver that ebmeds the
workaround, and shipped it with the preinstalled Windows, thus without
releasing any subsequent patch.
Another hypotesis is that the BIOS developers tested the suspend/resume only on
Windows. Since Windows is not ACPI compliant (otherwise, life for non-Windows
users would be much easier), neither is the BIOS. We could ask Acer to release
another BIOS version, but wouldn't that break suspend/resume on Windows systems?

[Bug 382167] Re: LCD backlight flickers when adjusting it and when the system is idle

2009-07-26 Thread Enrico Gueli
It looks like in Karmic alpha3 the backlight works really good.
The only flaw is the relative slowness of each brightness change: it can't
follow rapid changes in the brightness applet slider, but eventually the
brightness reaches the desired value. I can perfectly live with that.
Thanks!!

[Bug 365776] Re: [i965] graphical glitches with Blender/OpenGL unless DRI disabled

2009-07-26 Thread Enrico Gueli
This is what happens to my system (Intel 965GM) with Karmic Koala alpha3
live:

The 3D artifacts are all gone, both in fullscreen and windowed mode. But:
- in windowed mode, menus don't appear and don't even blindly respond to
mouse clicks. This makes Blender totally useless.
- in fullscreen mode, it's not really fullscreen - the top and bottom GNOME
panels are still visible. Moving the mouse over any button or menu causes a
redraw some pixels above the graphical element itself. It's the same artifact
as in post #26.

I'm attaching my Xorg.0.log.

[Bug 382167] [NEW] LCD backlight flickers when adjusting it and when the system is idle

2009-05-31 Thread Enrico Gueli
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Since I installed Intrepid, adjusting the LCD brightness is always an annoying
experience on my Acer 5720, both on AC power and on battery power.
If I increase or decrease the brightness by one step with the Fn+left/Fn+right
one of the following will randomly happen:
- changing the brightness (as expected);
- resetting the brightness to the minimum;
- the brightness rapidly goes to the minimum, then to the desired amount. This
may happen up to 2-3 times in a row, leading to an annoying short flicker.

With the +/- buttons from the Brightness applet, the brightness seems to
go to the minimum, then goes back, then to the minimum again, then to
the new value. During these operations (which last about half a second),
the applet is unresponsive, i.e. the slider changes its position only
after it finished.

Trying to drag the slider to the desired value, it behaves like I was
pressing the +/- buttons many times, therefore the brightness flickers
and slowly changes for some seconds. Sometimes it directly reaches the
final value, sometimes it goes back for a certain amount then goes to
the final values, sometimes it stops in the middle. All of this is VERY
annoying.

Moreover, I see some flicker happening some time after I don't move the
mouse or press any key (always returning to the current brightness)
and/or when I start again to use keyboard or the mouse.

I repeat: before using Ubuntu 9.04, everything worked almost fine.

The cause may be a conflict between gnome-power-manager and some other
piece of software (kernel? brightness applet?), therefore I'm filing
this to the g-p-m package.

[Bug 206528] Re: gnome-display-properties: no way to set which is the primary monitor

2009-05-11 Thread Enrico Gueli
The same for me. I have two displays, the 15 LCD (LVDS) of the laptop
Ubuntu is running in, and an external 19 CRT. The graphics chip is an
Intel GM945. it looks like the LCD is set as the primary display (i.e.
where all the toolbars are located, where fullscreen videos will show,
and where all new windows appear) only when the CRT is set left to,
right to or under the LCD. Unfortunately, my setup is with the CRT
_over_ the LCD (I think it's a similar setup as Effenberg0x0). When I
set this in gnome-display-properties, the external CRT is always set to
primary. So it looks like the criterion for choosing which is the
primary display depends on the displays' position, which is no good for
me. Also, xrandr --output LVDS --primary simply does nothing for me.

I'd strongly suggest to include an option like Set this display as the
primary, and clearly show in the displays' graph which of them is the
primary.

[Bug 160763] Re: Acer Aspire 5720 hangs on second resume from suspend, i.e. suspends only once

2009-01-10 Thread Enrico Gueli
Maxim,
thank you for your effort in trying to find out the problem, as you reported in
the other mailing list. It definitely looks like it's a BIOS bug, not a Linux
one. Instead of fixing it with a BIOS upgrade (there were so many since the
initial release), the Acer guys wrote a workaround in the Windows drivers so
that only Windows users can freely suspend their machines. I think it's an
unfair discrimination against non-Windows users.
I agree with you in writing a complain to Acer support. I'll try in the next
days to call their tech support to report the problem and get some info about a
collective complain.

It'd be nice to know if there's any 5720 without this bug...

[Bug 237064] Re: Unable to create archive with OpenOffice document using nautilus integration

2008-11-17 Thread Enrico Gueli
The new OOXML files (.docx, .pptx...) are zipfiles indeed. I can
currently test only for a .pptx file I have, for which create archive
is missing too.

Unlike I said before, not all MS Office files lack the create archive
option. For me, it happens only for .xls ones, for which the Extract
here is completely nonsense (indeed, file-roller shows an archive not
supported error). .doc and .ppt work regularly instead.

[Bug 160763] Re: Acer Aspire 5720 hangs on second resume from standby

2008-11-17 Thread Enrico Gueli
No, such a feature isn't even mentioned in the BIOS settings.

I found that bug #206952
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/206952) is quite similar,
although it refers to a different model.
Also, http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/Kernel/2008-09/msg06715.html
talks about the same bug with a 5720G laptop. Also that thread showed no
solutions so far.

[Bug 237064] Re: Unable to create archive with OpenOffice document using nautilus integration

2008-11-16 Thread Enrico Gueli
This bug affects me too, but with Intrepid (8.10) instead.
Moreover, the create archive option is absent even for MS Office files.
Should I file a new bug for these?

With BIOS version 1.42 and Intrepid released (kernel 2.6.27-7), nothing
changed.

[Bug 235726] Re: rhythmbox unresponsive while doing MTP operations

I'm experiencing the same behaviour, also with Nokia N95 and Rhythmbox
0.11.5 in Hardy Heron.

[Bug 160763] Re: Acer Aspire 5720 hangs on second resume from standby

2008-08-29 Thread Enrico Gueli
I upgraded my distro with apt-get update / apt-get dist-upgrade. The bug is
still there.
In the meanwhile, I upgraded the BIOS to version 1.40 and tried to avoid
loading as many modules as possible, keeping just ext3 and the ones it needs
(jbd, mbcache...), by editing /etc/initramfs-conf/{initramfs.conf,modules} and
running mkinitramfs. The bug is still there.

:-(

Anything else I can do?

Many thanks

2008-07-21 Thread Enrico Gueli
I can confirm this, with a Yahoo! POP3 server (pop.mail.yahoo.it). With
Thunderbird, with the same settings, old messages get deleted as
expected.

Email Account: POP (SSL Encryption)
Days before Deleting: 7days
Disable support for all POP3 extensions: Un-Checked
Leave Messages on server: Checked

[Bug 160763] Re: Acer Aspire 5720 hangs on second resume from standby

2008-05-17 Thread Enrico Gueli
Hello,
I've successfully installed linux-image-2.6.25-1-generic, and run it in
recovery mode (i.e. root shell, no X).
Executed sync; echo 1 /sys/power/pm_trace; /etc/acpi/sleep.sh force (it
complains pm_trace doesn't exist; maybe it was removed in 2.6.25?)

Nothing changed, I still can do suspend-resume only once :(

I've read https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UnderstandingSuspend. Since the
backlight doesn't turn on, I suppose it's something related to video
BIOS. My graphics card is an Intel X3100/GM965.

In the meanwhile, I've already upgraded the system BIOS from 1.19 to
1.34.

Just upgraded to version 2.21.90: the bug is still here.
Also, the Ctrl-minus trick doesn't work for me.
