[Bug 427288] Re: Karmic i386 EC2 kernel emulating unsupported memory accesses

2009-09-11 Thread Eric Hammond
I may be biased (ok yes, I am biased) but it seems to me that if Xen
needs to be configured differently than KVM, then it should be and we
should be building separate images for EC2 and UEC. The EC2 images for
Ubuntu should be the best EC2 images possible without compromise.

I can understand the desire to use the same images across platforms and
hope that there is another solution that can accomplish this.

I see from Scott's message that the kernel modules were uploaded to a

placed in https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-on-ec2/+archive/ppa ?

I would recommend that the kernel modules and other production required
components for EC2 be placed in an official team PPA rather than an
individual developer's PPA.

[Bug 418130] Re: Karmic EC2 images don't use a karmic kernel

2009-09-09 Thread Eric Hammond
The 64-bit kernels overwrote the 32-bit kernels since both were named
"test-kernel-01". The 32-bit kernels are unusable.

Please build the kernels and ramdisks using descriptive manifest
prefixes including the kernel version, architecture, date, and tags
like:

  ubuntu-kernel-2.6.31-1-xen-i386-20090909-test-01
  ubuntu-ramdisk-2.6.31-1-xen-i386-20090909-test-01

Hopefully this can be automated instead of manually entered each time a
kernel is built.

[Bug 424065] Re: ec2-init hangs boot on non-EC2/Eucalpytus systems

2009-09-09 Thread Eric Hammond
Soren:

There are a number of packages which do not activate automatically when
they installed, but instead require changing a configuration line in
/etc/default/xxx to "RUN=yes" or some such.

The vmbuilder EC2 plugin would have no trouble tweaking this after
installing the ec2-init package.

What do you think about using this approach to avoid breaking Ubuntu
systems?

I suspect a lot of people looking to get started with EC2 will find
"ec2-init" in the package lists and install it without any idea that it
really isn't what they want. I though there were situations where
removing "splash" is sometimes preferable, but I could be mistaken.

[Bug 424065] Re: ec2-init hangs waiting for ec2 meta-data service

2009-09-05 Thread Eric Hammond
The ec2-init package should only be installed on an instance (or image)
which is used inside of Amazon EC2 or compatible environment
(Eucalyptus). End users should never install the ec2-init package
themselves as it is only useful when building images for EC2/Eucalyptus.

Are there any other packages in Ubuntu which should never be installed
by normal users? What protection do they take?

Perhaps ec2-init could by default install itself in safety mode with no
bootup actions and require an additional step to "activate" it.

[Bug 423856] Re: [FFE] ec2-init should check for image upgrades

2009-09-04 Thread Eric Hammond
Random response points:

- My main statement is that I think this feature should be discussed on
a more public forum. I don't know if this should be ubuntu-ec2,
ec2ubuntu, a technical board meeting, or whatever. I'm simply reporting
a conflict in what I've heard in the past and what seems to be proposed
here.

- I would rather not be put in the position of arguing the view points
of others, though I think they deserve a chance to be heard. Besides
caring about the community's needs, I also care about a backlash against
Ubuntu if the feature is launched without appropriate discussion and
community support.

- It is possible that I entirely misunderstood what I thought was an
Ubuntu promise not to implement dial-home features like you find in
software from other vendors. (I also thought the name "Ubuntu" was not
going to be used for commercial software products and it turns out I was
wrong there ;-) )

- When you ask a Canonical web server for currency information, you are
not just passing a release number and user agent. You are also
informing Canonical of the IP address where you are running the image
(or gateway). I imagine that would be the biggest privacy concern.

- I'm not just talking about EC2. I think think folks who run
Eucalyptus on their own servers would be even more likely to object to
having their instances contact Canonical and tell them they are running
Eucalyptus in their company, and how often.

- It sounded to me like this feature would immediately contact Canonical
on boot, making it difficult to disable even for people who knew about
it and wanted to.

- It sounds like Soren has a great idea for integrating the check and
notification features into a standard Ubuntu package so there is nothing
happening beyond a normal upgrade to get the information through the
normal channels. This would allow the user to decide who and when to
notify about the fact that they are running Ubuntu just as they do
today.

- See my first point. That's my point. All the rest of these points
are just distractions.

I believe I have heard rather strong statements from Canonical that
Ubuntu will never have "phone home" type data collection hooks to find
out how many people are running Ubuntu. Though the overt intent of this
proposal may be philanthropic, this sounds suspiciously like such a
feature.

I would have loved to put such a hook in the Ubuntu images I've built
for EC2 to find out the amount of usage they get, but did not so so
because of the Ubuntu philosophy in this regard.

[Bug 296610] Re: ALPS DualPoint Touchpad flaky performance

2009-09-02 Thread Eric Hammond
I have been experiencing what sounds like the same problem running
Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty on a Dell Latitude 6500. apport-collect data added
above. The biggest problem I have seems to be when I click-hold the
left mouse button, touch-drag-release on the touchpad, then release the
left mouse button. This is a common action for selecting a block of
text.

This often works, but very regularly, it results in jumping the mouse
(often downwards) and pasting a chuck of text as if I had clicked the
middle mouse button.

Possibly relevant note: The upper mouse buttons on the Latitude 6500 are
adjacent to the touch pad with no barrier in between. It is easy to
accidentally touch the upper part of the touchpad with the same finger
which is clicking a mouse button, especially using the thumb as I do in
the above sequence. This may be involved in generating the bad
behavior, though I cannot reproduce it reliably.

I am using gsynaptics as described above. I am not using vmware. I
don't always have to reload the psmouse module, though sometimes I do.
Let me know if you need any additional information or tests.

This problem is extremely annoying as it results in incorrect mouse
movements and clicks, generally pasting something I did not intend to
paste in a location where I did not intend to have focus.

[Bug 397187] Re: [karmic] udev requires new kernel, breaks on EC2

2009-08-06 Thread Eric Hammond
By "won't fix" I assume this means that it will not be possible to
upgrade an instance running an Intrepid/Jaunty AMI to Karmic and expect
it to keep running on the older Intrepid/Jaunty kernel. This makes
sense given the issues with the kernel and the inability to upgrade a
kernel on a running instance in the EC2 environment.

I assume that "won't fix" does not mean that the plan is to not build a
Karmic kernel.

[Bug 397187] Re: [karmic] udev requires new kernel, breaks on EC2

2009-07-08 Thread Eric Hammond
Running the latest udev (144) on a Karmic EC2 instance causes the
network to not come back up after a reboot because of this problem
(Andreas found this out, but I confirmed and thought it was also worth
mentioning this severe effect in this bug). I'm not sure this is really
a udev bug; the right answer might be to build a newer kernel for EC2,
though I can't judge the effort required to "fix" either side.

[Bug 358098] Re: vmbuilder hangs or crashes when building images on ec2 instances

2009-04-14 Thread Eric Hammond
Cap, Are you saying that you are able to apply a fix to a running Ubuntu
instance on EC2 and get vm-builder to work correctly for you (what AMI
and what steps)? Or, are you just assuming that #293067 probably
relates because of the description?

Note that the images listed on http://alestic.com are running Amazon's
older 2.6.21fc8 kernel and that they are generally not of interest to
the team reading launchpad.net bugs, though I am personally very
interested and appreciate bug reports directly to me or through
http://groups.google.com/group/ec2ubuntu

Bugs you find running on the official Ubuntu beta images should
definitely continue to be posted here or on the ec2-beta mailing list so
that they can be investigated.

Are you still experiencing this particular problem on the official
Ubuntu beta images?

[Bug 358098] Re: vmbuilder hangs or crashes when building images on ec2 instances

2009-04-09 Thread Eric Hammond
This is now ringing a bell with me. I ran into very similar behavior with
simple Perl calls spinning when building images on EC2 instances. It was back
in 2007 so I'm having a hard time remembering what the problem or solution
were, but the answer may be somewhere in this code (which now builds images ok
on EC2):

  http://code.google.com/p/ec2ubuntu/

I think it was some odd bug between Perl and the EC2 kernel/environment.

I'm pretty sure the problem showed up in debootstrap or code run by
debootstrap. I still see the commented out debug line in the above
script right before running debootstrap. What's odd, though, is that
the script does almost nothing of significance before running
debootstrap.

2009-04-08 Thread Eric Hammond
Am I correct in understanding that this process works on your local
Ubuntu system, but fails when you run it on EC2 instances using various
official and unofficial AMIs? If so, then it sounds like it may be more
of a bug against the EC2 images and environment than against vmbuilder
itself.

This situation arises when vmbuilder is being used to build standard

vmbuilder is used to build public images for Amazon EC2:

[Bug 317065] Re: Set up a mirror based on zone

2009-01-14 Thread Eric Hammond
There is currently no standard, reliable method for determining what
specific availability zone an EC2 instance is running in.

In fact, availability zone us-east-1a for one EC2 account may not be the
same availability zone as us-east-1a for another EC2 account. Amazon
assigns these names randomly for each account (but keeps them consistent
within that account).

There are no public, shared, external names for the EC2 availability
zones. They are all relative to the specific account running the
instance.

I believe the best an instance can do is to determine what region it is
running in and use a mirror name which represents the mirror instance(s)
in that region.

When architecting the mirrors, there should still be at least one
instance running in each availability zone to provide the level of
reliability that EC2 users depend on.

When the instance determines the region it is in (say, us-east-1) it could use
something like:
  ec2-us-east-1.archive.canonical.com
or
  us-east-1.ec2.archive.canonical.com
and that could resolve to the internal IP addresses for the mirrors in all the
availability zones in that region.

There is a chance that the user's instance might not get the mirror in
its own availability zone which would add a small network transfer
charge (currently $0.01/GB) but this is still much less than accessing a
mirror completely outside of EC2 (about $0.10/GB).

[Bug 308548] [NEW] vmbuilder EC2: ec2-ami-tools patch for excluding persistent network files

2008-12-16 Thread Eric Hammond
Public bug reported:

I'm not sure how to report a bug against the ec2-ami-tools package
available in intrepid multiverse but that's where this belongs.

When an AMI is run and the resulting instance is rebundled, the new AMI
is unusable if one of the following files is present:

  Ubuntu
  /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules

  Debian
  /etc/udev/rules.d/z25_persistent-net.rules

This *may* not be a problem with Intrepid (?), but it definitely is a
problem with some previous releases. The attached patch makes sure that
the ec2-bundle-vol command excludes these files so that the resulting
image can be used no matter which distro or release it was running.

It is fine for this patch to be included in Intrepid and I would ask
that it be included there since that archive is the current best place
to go for this software if one is using Ubuntu or Debian.

[Bug 308545] [NEW] vmbuilder EC2: Install EC2 AMI tools on image

2008-12-16 Thread Eric Hammond
Public bug reported:

This request may relate more to the images being built than to the
vmbuilder tool itself.

Most of the popular EC2 images are distributed with the EC2 AMI tools
installed.

Users may expect these to be installed and may find it inconvenient if
they are not provided.

One common use case is to run an EC2 image, install and configure
software, and then rebundle the instance as a new image. This requires
the ec2-bundle-vol command which is part of the EC2 AMI tools.

[Bug 301499] Re: vmbuilder EC2: /etc/fstab missing trailing newline when built with --part

2008-12-16 Thread Eric Hammond
Turns out this is already a problem and should be increased in priority.

When walking through the following tutorial,

http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/connect/entry.jspa?categoryID=100&externalID=1663

the missing newline breaks a command like:

  echo "/dev/sdh /vol xfs noatime 0 0" >> /etc/fstab

I don't think anybody would be considered strange if they expected
/etc/fstab to end in a newline.

[Bug 308535] [NEW] vmbuilder EC2: Create AMIs with full 10GB root partition

2008-12-16 Thread Eric Hammond
Public bug reported:

This request does not really belong against the vmbuilder project but
rather applies to the Ubuntu images being built. They currently have
4GB root partitions (4096) which is arbitrarily and unnecessarily
limiting.

These images should be built with the maximum 10GB root partition
(10240) allowed by EC2.

Justification:

The increased root partition size does not materially increase the size
of the AMI and does not materially increase the startup time.

It is not possible for users to alter the size of the root partition in
an AMI.

Having a small root partition limits how much software users can install
easily. It also limits basic operations in software like MySQL using
the default configuration (e.g., tmpdir, datadir).

I originally built Ubuntu AMIs with 4GB root partitions in early 2008
but switched to the full 10GB based on user feedback and my own
experience.

[Bug 301499] [NEW] vmbuilder EC2: /etc/fstab missing trailing newline when built with --part

2008-11-23 Thread Eric Hammond
Public bug reported:

When I use the --part option in vmbuilder --ec2 it builds an /etc/fstab
without a trailing newline on the last record.

This is probably just a minor nuisance and shouldn't affect much in the
way of functionality, but it also should be easy to fix.

I'm currently working off of this branch (with the fixes from ec2exec-

I'm starting to think it's bzr/launchpad's problem and not mine. I

I had originally requested:

  Using saved location: bzr+ssh://[EMAIL

  Created new branch.

So, I deleted the branch ~ubuntu-ec2/vmbuilder/ec2exec-fixes-2 and the

[Bug 296159] [NEW] ec2exec: quotes not needed in sed command

2008-11-09 Thread Eric Hammond
Public bug reported:

This change on the ec2exec branch:

  http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~nijaba/vmbuilder/ec2exec/revision/276

causes this error:

  2008-11-10 02:03:55,690 DEBUG['sed', '-i', '"s/tty1/xvc0/"',
'%s/etc/event.d/tty1']
  2008-11-10 02:03:55,697 INFO sed: -e expression #1, char 1: unknown
command: `"'

I don't think the double quotes are required inside of the single
quotes.

Also, it looks like there is a %s in the last parameter which should be
parameterized by the installdir.

[Bug 296136] [NEW] vmbuilder EC2: /etc/fstab should be different for 32-bit vs. 64-bit images

2008-11-09 Thread Eric Hammond
Public bug reported:

vmbuilder --ec2 currently has a single template for /etc/fstab which is
based on the 64-bit /etc/fstab for EC2.

The exposed disks differ between 32- and 64-bit instances and they
should have different /etc/fstab setups to match what is advertised in
the EC2 documentation:

http://docs.amazonwebservices.com/AWSEC2/2008-08-08/DeveloperGuide/index.html
?instance-storage.html

Here is a recommended /etc/fstab for 32-bit images (small and medium EC2
instance types):

/dev/sda1 / ext3defaults 1 1
/dev/sda2 /mnt ext3defaults 0 0
/dev/sda3 swap swapdefaults 0 0
none /proc procdefaults 0 0
none /sys sysfs defaults 0 0

Here is a recommended /etc/fstab for 64-bit images (large and xlarge EC2
instance types):

/dev/sda1 / ext3 defaults 1 1
/dev/sdb /mnt ext3 defaults 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /sys sysfs defautls 0 0

The development which relates to this template is currently on the

[Bug 293067] [NEW] vmbuilder EC2: Install libc6-xen

2008-11-03 Thread Eric Hammond
Public bug reported:

Based on a year of building and running Ubuntu images on EC2, the
community came to the following specific steps for managing libc6
issues:

chroot $imagedir apt-get install -y libc6-xen
echo 'hwcap 0 nosegneg' > $imagedir/etc/ld.so.conf.d/libc6-xen.conf
chroot $imagedir apt-get remove -y libc6-i686 || true
chroot $imagedir ldconfig

These steps are only performed on the 32-bit images (after Dapper) and
the /lib/tls directory is left in place.

These steps prevent and fix some warnings as well as serious crashes and
hangs.

I don't claim to understand all the internal workings that are involved
here, so I don't know if these are required for a modern Ubuntu Xen
kernel with Ubuntu Intrepid.

Please do consider them, however, as the current vmbuilder --ec2 image
does at least generate the following warning on boot:

   ***
   ***
** WARNING: Currently emulating unsupported memory accesses **
** in /lib/tls glibc libraries. The emulation is**
** slow. To ensure full performance you should **
   ** install a 'xen-friendly' (nosegneg) version of **
** the library, or disable tls support by executing **
** the following as root: **
   ** mv /lib/tls /lib/tls.disabled**
   ** Offending process: init (pid=1739)**
   ***
   ***

Note that experience has shown that moving /lib/tls aside as suggested
in the above warning can be very dangerous as future libc6 upgrades will
put it back in place (which has caused system hangs on earlier images).

[Bug 293039] [NEW] Include plugin post_install in "prevent_daemons_starting" coverage

2008-11-03 Thread Eric Hammond
Public bug reported:

The way that the EC2 plugin is currently designed, the post_install
portion wants to apt-get install openssh-server which attempts to
restart sshd and fails.

It would be nice if the post_install plugins were called before
"unprevent_daemons_starting" was invoked (currently in dapper.py). This
would prevent sshd from getting invoked and we would not have to ignore
any error from the install process in the post_install script.

Alternatively, I wonder if there might be a way to run the script from
within the install portion of the EC2 plugin instead of the
post_install. It isn't clear to me how all the pieces are intended to
be fit together.

The code to which this report belongs is currently in the following
branch:

  https://code.launchpad.net/~nijaba/vmbuilder/ec2exec

Note: The code works as it is written, but I'm just thinking we might be
able to restructure it a touch to make it a bit cleaner and robust.

[Bug 292888] Re: vmbuilder EC2: "sub postinstall" => "sub post_install"

2008-11-03 Thread Eric Hammond
Of course I meant "def" instead of "sub" in the bug title. Sure I used
to program for a living in C, C++, Objective C, and many other languages
back in the day, but it has been Perl for the last 15 years, so bear
with me.

[Bug 292901] [NEW] vmbuilder EC2: Check postinstall script commands failure

2008-11-02 Thread Eric Hammond
Public bug reported:

It might be good for the postinstall script for the EC2 plugin of
vmbuilder to abort the build process if it encounters an error.
Currently it simply ignores the error and the build continues on until
the user is presented with an AMI id which may very well be unusable.

For example, I'm currently hitting a problem on one machine where the
"wget" command is failing and instances from the resulting AMI don't
boot properly. This might have been quicker to track down if the
postinstall script failed.

Adding this to the top of the postinstall script might be all that is needed:
  set -e
It looks like the postinstall script return code is already being checked after
that point.

This enhancement request currently pertains to the following branch
(only because it includes the postinstall script):

  https://code.launchpad.net/~nijaba/vmbuilder/ec2exec

[Bug 292888] [NEW] vmbuilder EC2: "sub postinstall" => "sub post_install"

2008-11-02 Thread Eric Hammond
Public bug reported:

When I run vmbuilder --ec2 it never invokes the postinstall script. I
don't see the "running ec2 postinstall script" output even with --debug
and the resulting AMI is unusable.

Based on reading the code I think this may be because in
  VMBuilder/plugins/ec2/__init__.py
the line
  def postinstall(self):
should be changed to
  def post_install(self):
to match
  self.call_hooks('post_install')
in
  VMBuilder/vm.py

[Bug 292733] [NEW] Better checking/messaging of --exec script problems

2008-11-02 Thread Eric Hammond
Public bug reported:

If the exec script is missing the following error is given at the start
of the run:

The path to the --execscript file is invalid: SCRIPTNAME. Make sure
you are providing a full path.

It might be nice to also check to see if the script is executable and
provide a helpful message to that effect. The current behavior if the
script isn't executable is to spend the time building the image and then
at the end die with a stack trace ending with the slightly unintuitive
error message:

  OSError: [Errno 13] Permission denied
