[Bug 509804] [NEW] Text on text or text covered by objects

2010-01-19 Thread Eric Lee Elliott
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

Routinely see text below pictures covering text of article. Routinely
see pages with part of headers, including buttons obscured by next lower
part of page. Many pages have text entry boxes that display less than
top half of each character I enter.

Bug applies to 3 computers with various Linux distros, 32 or 64 bits OS,
Intel or Nvidia video, in excess of 1 years with same problem.

I always set FF for minimum font 12 to 16 points, always use Nimbus Sans L
font. Not known if same in Windiz, as I always use Linuxes.
Problem webs include youtube.com, cnet.com, http://www.hp.com/#Product, any
foxnews page including video. Problem does not occur on any page including
Chinese, Korean, Japanses or Hebrew fonts.
Problem is not fixed by zooming page, reloading page or changing size of FF
window. If page is displayed with text overlaid on text in Thinkpad with Intel
- Intel hardware & 1024 X 768 display, then same problem will occur on same web
page in AMD - Nvidia computer with 1920 X 1200 display.
I use same font in 12 to 15 point size when configuring KDE but FF has bad
display, not KDE.
Recently I have used Mandriva, Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Fedora without noticing any
distro free of this FF problem.

I suppose I should go try it in Opera & Gnome & will do so if asked to.

Used Sound Preferences repeatedly till one configuration worked. IEC958,
digital stereo input & analog stereo output worked at last but not when
initially tried. After several other configurations were tried, this
configuration was tried again & worked.
USB ports now working properly, so some update may have fixed sound & USB.

This bug has not bothered me in months. Still using ATT and a Sierra 875
cellular data card to access Internet. Ubuntu 8.1 finds, installs & operates
Att connection with minimal attention & no errors. Kubuntu not as easy, not
automatic install, but rarely has off line problem. Debian KDE also stays on
line.

Re: [Bug 191889] Re: [MASTER] [WORKAROUND] "Offline Mode" feature fails to detect proper online state for networks that are managed outside of network manager.

2008-12-23 Thread Eric Lee Elliott
Klaus,
I filed bug for FF lacking way to defeat off line mode, several months ago.
People refused to see that most users might never use or need off line mode.
People refused to change FF behavior to avoid users switching to browser with
less vexing behavior. Finally they combined my bug with bug blaming other
programs for FF being off line.
No consideration seemed to be given for default on line behavior as you
desired. Why the people in control of FF would want to have the only browser
that so discourages users is beyond my understanding.

Fresh install of kubuntu 8.10 with all updates has cellular modem connected
via kppp, then Firefox starting off line every start. Off line mode options do
not prevent or inhibit off line condition. Network Manager is not used or
needed but does not help problem with cellular modem as only Internet
connection.

Cure is simple: quit using Firefox entirely. And in my case, quit using
Kubuntu, Ubuntu entirely. While configuring my router, firefox 3, with
latest update, Firefox goes off line. completely screws router configuration.
this in a system I had selected to install FF2 not FF3. Who chose to force
FF3 on me? FF or FFX was not chosen, FF2 was chosen.
Why does update to FF3 completely screw FF2? Why can I not revert to FF2?
Some damned conspiracy? Or what?

My bug was not duplicate of any other bug. My bug was fact that Firefox has
an off line mode, a useless damned off line mode that serves only 2 purposes;
1 to require us to select on line mode, 2 to drive us away from use of
Firefox completely.

Stupid programmers have required me to leave Kubuntu, to move to Debian for
above and following reasons:
System 1 monitor resolution can not be left at 1200 X 800 on one computer if
external monitor is connected. Externa monitor is useless due to stupid
changes of resolution repeated at each update.
System 2 monitor resolution can not be left at native 1920 X 1200 but must be
repaired after updates.
Kubuntu randomly choses to not allow access to USB drives.
Konsole can not be set to 111 X 72, black text on white. Each start of
Konsole is small white font on black screen, useless to my vision. WTF, why
offer settings that are ignored???
System notifications can not be set OFF and stay off. Some damned programmer
has determined I must have loud noises at each failed search, each failure of
any sort and to hell with my selection of silence. WTF, why offer settings
that are ignored???

This off line on line mode selection is just one symptom of stupid
programmers that want it their own stupid way and to hell with users.

Kubuntu is diseased with stupid programmers that require monitor power off to
be at 45 minutes and will not abide my selection of power off at 3 minutes.

firefox off line mode is just one of many symptoms of problem.
I do not know if problem is Kubuntu, KDE or Ubuntu, I do know I am sick of
it. Is the programmers goal to force me back to windiz or to force me to
learn every bit of Linux configurations to keep my setting intact, to keep my
computers from farting at me at every failed action? Must I learn to hand
configure X11 to keep screens at native resolution?

Who gains what from changing my screens from native resolution with each
update?
Who gains what from switching on loud offensive noises with each update?
Who gains what from changing permissions to access USB and external HDDs with
each update?
Hell will be full of lawyers and programmers.

[Bug 191889] Bug 191889 Ubuntu's new "Offline Mode" feature

2008-06-16 Thread Eric Lee Elliott
Firefox3 is now staying on line in one computer. Network Manger
has been removed. Network Manager was problematic in general. NM
would not leave ethernet port off. NM would not consistently use
only one preferred wlan port.
Without NM, kppp still does my Internet connection and FF3 is
always on line. Still using ATT cellular modem, Sierra AC875 to
access Internet.

Updated Kubuntu, KDE4, 32 bit Intel & Intel 945 system.

Next I will remove NM from 64 bit Athlon system and install FF3.

I fear I am one of many that have or are converting to using KDE
software rather than Mozilla.

I connect thru ATT cellular system, hardware is Sierra AC875
data card, software is Kubuntu 8. Network Manager seems
disabled. Kppp is used to control & connect Sierra card.
WIFI is disabled usually. My symptoms are much like his.
Every thing works except Firefox.

No, not duplicate of bug. Users should not have to ever be bothered with off
line mode. Period.
I do not ever use FF off line. Why should FF ever switch off line in my
computer? No other browser I use has a line switch. No other browser I use
has ever line switched for any reason, then required me to find switch and set
back on line. Regardless of cause, regardless of source of switch problem,
regardless of intentions of FF designers, no user should be required to switch
FF on line. Especially if he never selects off line mode.
I am not only XFF3 user due to line mode switch. If FF2 starts switching off
line like FF3. I will quit FF2 also.
Second issue is FF having a line mode switch; not just issue of intrusive line
switch but existence of lin mode switch. Why exist?

[Bug 205169] Re: Offline mode not defeatable in FF3

2008-05-24 Thread Eric Lee Elliott
Of all the applications I use, no other application fails to stay on
line, no other application has automatic shift to off line and manual
shift to on line. MSIE never required me to select line mode, it just
loaded the file, web page or whatever I directed it to. Konqueror lacks
line mode selection without me missing it.

Other applications find restored Internet connection & resume data
transmission but FF3 switches off line during use and requires manual
shft to on line. If I disconnect intentionally, reconnection results in
other applications resuming operation but FF3 requires manual switch to
on line. FF3 disconnects even while Internet connection continues.
Again I have disconnected from FF3 and removed it from my computers.

Whatever is intention of FF3 designers is not important to me, this FF3
feature is wrong, not needed and cause to abandon use of FF. Other
users will think same as I do.

Since first available pre release, FF3 in Kubuntu has persisted in
switching off line, while all other applications continued to use Sierra
AC875 cellular modem to Internet.

John,
I use a Sierra AC875 cellular modem to access Internet via
cellular network. Sometimes I use 802.11b for Internet
access. FF3 switches off line during use, for no apparent
reason. FF3 usually starts off line, causing me to either
switch FF3 to on line or quit using FF3. I quit using FF3.
My computers are set to not allow upgrade to FF3. I will
switch to Konqueror for all uses before I will use FF3 with
automatic off line switch active.

MSIE, last I used it, did not have to be switched, did not
have an apparent line mode control. Just type a file or web
address to load it in MSIE. Why MUST FF3 have automatic
shift off line and manual shift on line?

Users also should not have to frequently switch FF3 on line
due to some stupid obscure goal of FF3 Upstream. Ubuntu &
Kubuntu are adding features that are more like Windiz and
are reasons users switch away from Windiz. FF3 off line
mode being selected, against desires of user, is another
step toward Windiz.

All that has little bearing on problem of automatic off line
switching by FF3. FF3 goes off line while Thunderbird
continues to connect. All other applications continue to
connect to Internet, apparently not bothered by my means of
Internet access, yet FF3 switches off line. None of the
other applications require me to push the clutch and move
shifter to on line.

I used to install FF3 periodically to check for off line fix
but quit that when I found FF3 not ruins FF2. Even purging
FF2 and FF3 does not allow restoration of normal FF2
operation in Kubuntu 8.

FF Upstream can continue with this off line thing and
continue to lose users.

[Bug 205169] [NEW] Offline mode not defeatable in FF3

2008-03-22 Thread Eric Lee Elliott
Public bug reported:

Firefox 3 lacks a way to defeat automatic selection of off line mode.

Firefox 3 has added feature of off line operations that should be set OFF until
user selects automatic online/off line switching.
Users should not have to find why FF has no connection to network nor should
users have to set FF online at each session start or repeatedly switch online
during session.

Reasons for FF selecting off line mode are irrelevant to this bug.

[Bug 200407] [NEW] Notifications

2008-03-09 Thread Eric Lee Elliott
Public bug reported:

Have never been able to use external 1280 X 1024 Samasung 191T monitor
with Thinkpad Z61M 9450A38. Notebook display is 1280 X 800. After
Samsung install, initial display is 1280 X1024 on both screens. Reboot
fails to do Xwin. Frustration leads to new install of Kubuntu without
second display. Same result from Kubuntu 7 to Kubuntu 8.04. i would
buy 1920 X 1080 display for HD video display, but seems Kubuntu or X
can't handle it.

Current versions of kubuntu are better that initial versions of Kubuntu
7+ that would mutate to 1024 X 768 display or 800 X 600 display after
system updates. Repeatedly had to prune X config files to eliminate
lower resolutions, to resume normal 1280 X 800 operation.

Is problem due to Intel 945 video system or Samsung 191T external
display?
