[Bug 994235] [NEW] Firefox says there's a silverlight upgrade even though there isn't
Public bug reported: If I go to the Add-ons manager, and select "Plugins", and then "Check to see if your plugins are up to date", I'll get a page telling me there's an upgrade for silverligt. But when I "upgrade", I get just the same old version (and firefox continues to claim there's silverlight upgrade available). [Bug 717517] [NEW] apport-bug insists on using seamonkey
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: apport For some insane reason, apport-bug insists on using seamonkey instead of my prefered webbrowser Firefox. (Yes, I tried setting Firefox as my prefered web browser using Xfce's settings editor, but that didn't help. And maybe I'm blind, but I couldn't find any 'settings' button/menu/etc. in apport-bug itself either). It's not just that I prefer Firefox in general, but also that I had my launchpad password stored in Firefox, but not in seamonkey. So I had to report the password as forgotten, and create a new one. And to make matters worse, launchpad seems to be really anal about password security, which I find somewhat silly. This is, after all, just a bugtracking system. (BTW, I really don't understand the point with making people use this apport thingie at all. Do you really WANT people to be completely pissed off when they report bugs? Wouldn't it be a lot better if bug reporters were in a friendly, polite mood indstead? Instead of spending 15 minuted on reporting an exiting readline/bash bug, I've spent about 1 h on calming down enough to report this bug without excessive use of the F-word) (For the record, I'm running Xubuntu 10.10 on amd64, and the version of apport I have installed is 1.14.1-0ubuntu8.1. (Why do you ask me to tell you this? Isn't the supposed point with apport to gather this kind of information automatically?)) This bug report was for a system where I had upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 (I guess I should have mentioned, but I didn't. Shame on me). I now tried a fresh 10.04 install on a spare hard drive I had. This patch would fix the problem. It's not necessarily complete; I didn't check whether there might be other cases of error messages going to stdout instead of stderr, but this fixes at least one case. (And maybe I should have sent this bug report directly to the radeontool developers. Oh well, sometimes fingers are faster than brain. Ok, so here's my lspci -vvnn, Xorg.0.log and xorg.conf, if you think you need them. I do, however, dare to claim that the problem is completely independent of my hardware or X setup. It's caused by the fact that the function usage() in file radeontool.c in the source code, uses printf("..."), when it should use fprintf(stderr,"..."). ** Attachment added: "xorg.conf" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/21580859/xorg.conf -- radeontool writes error messages to stdout https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/318303 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 299590] Re: [radeon HD 2400 Pro] blank screen starting X, then goes to standby
Since X in Jaunty is too broken to even let me switch to a console, I can't run anything there. I therefore downloaded the newer version of radeontool and used in Intrepid. regdump_good.txt is from my main 8.10 installation with the fix described in the initial posting, regdump_broke.txt is from a plain, untweaked 8.10 installation on an external hard drive. ** Attachment added: "regdump_good.txt" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/21296646/regdump_good.txt -- [radeon HD 2400 Pro] blank screen starting X, then goes to standby https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/299590 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 299590] Re: X doesn't work on "ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO" in 8.10
I now tried the jaunty daily alternate disk, and installed it on a spare hard disk of mine. The installation went fine, but when rebooting the new system, X behaved in the same manner as for the jaunty live described above. This time, however, when I chose "Archive configuration and logs", /var/log resided on a physical hard disk rather than RAM, so I got it in store fore you. Hope you'll find it useful! ** Attachment added: "Logs and conf. files as archived by the "Archive configuration and logs" option." http://launchpadlibrarian.net/20833615/failsafeX-backup-081231205433.tar -- X doesn't work on "ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO" in 8.10 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/299590 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 299590] Re: X doesn't work on "ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO" in 8.10
I downloaded the daily build (as of December 28 19:30 EEST) of jaunty- desktop-amd64.iso, and tried it. It works a little slightly bit better than before, but only a slightly little bit; instead of just going to stand by, it pops up a window that says """ Ubuntu is running low-graphics mode Your screen graphics card and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself """ I clicked OK, and got a window saying """ What would you like to do? ( ) Run ubuntu in low graphics mode ( ) Reconfigure graphics ( ) troubleshoot the error """ Choosing "Run ubuntu in low graphics mode", I got a mostly black screen, with a horizontal band of semi-random colours across the screen, where it stuck. I rebooted, and tried "troubleshoot the error" next. That gave me a window saying """ What information would you like to review?" ( ) Review the xserver log file ( ) Review the startup error ( ) Edit the configuration file ( ) Archive configuration and logs """ The three first alternatives would just give me the same window back again, without showing any logs or errors, nor letting me edit anything. The last option told me it had saved the configuration and logs /var/log/, but that's presumably a RAM file system, so it didn't help much. I tried to switch to a virtual console to copy the archived log files to a USB stick, but I just got the same blank screen with horizontal band as before, from where I couldn't escape, except by rebooting. [Bug 300112] [NEW] Hibernate & suspend won't stay asleep in 8.10
Public bug reported: I recently installed (x)ubuntu 8.10 on a computer with an ASUS M2N motherboard, AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core BE-2400 cpu, ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO graphics card, and a 640 GB Western Digital Caviar Green Power SATA-II hard drive. If I try to hibernate the computer, it shuts down, but starts up again immediately and returns to the state it was when I hibernated it. In other words, it works otherwise, it just doesn't stay hibernated for more than a 1/10 of a second. If I try to suspend the computer, it shuts down, and powers up again immediately (judging from the fact that the fans start spinning again and LEDs are glowing), but it never returns to any working state; the screen remains blank and the only way to get any reaction from it is to push the physical reboot button ("ctrl-alt-del" doesn't work), or physically cut the power. In xubuntu 8.04 both suspend and hibernation worked fine. In the attached tar file I'll include the output of the commands 'uname -a', 'dmesg', 'lspci -vvnn' and 'cat /proc/version_signature'. An additional possible clue: the following line is written to screen at a very early stage of the booting process: [0.328020] ..MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC I don't know if it's related, but it looks a bit suspicious to me. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Hibernate & suspend won't stay asleep in 8.10 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/300112 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 299590] [NEW] X doesn't work on "ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO" in 8.10
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg I've just installed Xubuntu-8.10 on a computer with an ASUS M2N motherboard, AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core BE-2400 CPU, and a ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO graphics card. I had some problems with X: after booting from the installation cd, instead of starting X, the screen went blank, and after a while into stand by where it remained. I then tried the alternate install disk. Installation from that went smoothly, but when (re)booting the newly installed system, starting X failed again with the same symptom; screen in stand by. I switched to a virtual console, and after lots of trial and error I was able to make X work the following way: 1. Install the radeonhd driver (xserver-xorg-video-radeonhd) 2. Through 'Xorg -configure' + heavy hand editing, create the xorg.conf file in the attachment. And with that it seems to work nicely. Problem solved for me. I decided to report it anyway to a) Make developers aware that the automatic X configuration tool on (X)ubuntu-8.10 has a problem with ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO cards b) Tell other users having the same problem that there's a workaround ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- X doesn't work on "ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO" in 8.10 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/299590 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 279830] [NEW] Spurious package suggestions for 'gvim'
Public bug reported: In my newly installed xubuntu 8.10 beta (i386 edition), I tried the command 'gvim', which gave me the following message: The program 'gvim' can be found in the following packages: * vim-gnome * vim * vim-nox * vim-gtk * vim-tiny Try: sudo apt-get install -bash: gvim: command not found I tried to install 'vim-gtk' and 'vim-nox', but neither package was found. I installed the package 'vim', which was found, but doesn't seem to provide the command 'gvim', and neither does the (pre-installed) package 'vim-tiny'. It turned out that of the suggested packages, only 'vim-gnome' did both exist and provide the command 'gvim'. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xfce4 I'm using Xubuntu, with swedish as my language. In the settings manager for Xfce ("Inställningshanterare") there is an item called "Skärm" (I think it's called "display" in the english original) to control some display settings. If I click on it I get a window which lets we choose resolution and gamma correction, which is OK. The heading of this window, and the window name, however, is "Musinställningar" ("Mouse settings"), which is clearly wrong, since this window has nothing to do with mouse settings.
