[Bug 1225811] Re: [Dell Inspiron 15R 5521] Can't toggle backlight brightness

2013-10-01 Thread Everthon Valadão
The adding of acpi_backlight=vendor into grub boot option FIXED the
problem in my Dell Inspiron 15R. I'm using the 3.11.0-9-generic 64 bits
kernel.

Without the proposed fix, the only way I have found to turn brightness
to MAX was setting the config below as ROOT:

   echo 4882
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

(the previous default value of
/sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness was 574)

2011-09-29 Thread Everthon Valadão
Here, Nautilus crashes *repeatedly* on Ubuntu 11.10 beta2.

Nautilus closes unexpectedly in a very high frequency, by whenever I'm
browsing folders with it. Sometimes it happens when I click an item,
sometimes when I'm scrolling through them. I can not repeat the bug, as
it happens in different folders and unexpectedly.

If someone could guide me on what type and how to get debugging
information, I will be happy to provide it.

[Bug 664079] Re: unable to transfer files by bluetooth obex push from phone to kubuntu

2011-07-19 Thread Everthon Valadão
If I do a pairing with my PC and phone, in the first time I can
successfully send files from my phone to the PC (and vice-versa). After
restarting the PC, if I try to send a file from my phone to the PC, I
get a message Connection FAIL, BUT, if I try it again, it succeed!

So, maybe the bluetooth obex daemon (or something like that) isn't
running or ready at the first attempt, but at the second trial it is. If
someone could instruct me what log files and debug info do you need to
try to fix this problem, I'm happy to provide them.

[Bug 792708] Re: [REGRESSION] Natty: bluetooth phone connection not working properly

2011-07-19 Thread Everthon Valadão
If I do a pairing with my PC and phone, at the first time I can
successfully send files from my phone to the PC (and vice-versa). I can
also browse the phone and use it as a bluetooth modem. After restarting
the PC, if I try to send a file from my phone to the PC, I get a message
Connection FAIL. BUT, if I try it again, it succeed!

So, maybe the bluetooth obex daemon (or something like that) isn't
running or ready at the first attempt, but at the second trial to send a
file it is. However, the networking connect doesn't work anymore, unless
I remove and redo the pairing process.

So, if someone could instruct me what log files and debug info do you

[Bug 778538] Re: Unfocussed, maximized windows can't be resized or closed without focussing first.

2011-07-12 Thread Everthon Valadão
Maybe this is also a compiz bug, worsened by unity and its way to place
the close buttons of maximized windows on the top panel. This could
cause confusion by not knowing which maximized window is focused.

Possible fix:
(Ubuntu Forums - July 24th, 2007)
1 - First I went SystemPreferencesWindows and turned on 'Select windows when
the mouse moves over them', and set the 'Interval before raising' to 0.5,
although I don't think the number is important.
2 - Then I logged-out and back in again to restart the window manager.
3 - Now when I mouse over an inactive window the window is highlited...
clicking it focuses the window. This is nice, and I could get used to it, but
not what I wanted. ...So I turned it off.
4 - Turning this on and off actually fixed the problem.
source: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3071659postcount=11

I turned on 'Select windows when the mouse moves over them' and it
avoided the focus mistake issue, but I didn't try the turn on and off.

[Bug 751374] Re: Dash won't open files anymore

2011-05-02 Thread Everthon Valadão
Quick and *dirty* FIX:

I eddited* the thunar deb package and removed the exo-utils dependency,
given it is the culprit for this BUG (specifically, the /usr/bin/exo-
open). The modified thunar package is attached, but to fix this problem,
first you have to remove exo-utils and then install the attached package
to get Thunar without creating the bug:

 sudo apt-get remove exo-utils

I have a Dell Vostro 3300 (Core i5, etc) laptop and I've seen the BUG:
soft lockup - CPU#1 stuck for 61s! message twice already, with the
kernel version 2.6.32-24. I'm going to collect more debug info and post
it here, but see how serious this bug is for laptop owners:

Last night I shutdown my Laptop and when I saw the black screen, closed
it and put it inside the case and the case into my backpack, to go home.
Then, 30 min. later, I hear some crazy fan noise, open my backpack and
feel some really intense heat... Men, my heart stopped! I found my
laptop almost bursting into flames, the fan spinning super fast and the
plastic case almost melting... Luckily I saw the bug message, shut the
laptop down at time and put it open to cool faster. It still work, but I
almost lost my Laptop because of this bug :(

Re: [Bug 79030] Re: gnome-video-thumbnailer uses all available CPU power when using bittorrent

2010-06-11 Thread Everthon Valadão
Good news! The new option of adding a .part suffix at incomplete downloads,
included in the newer version of Transmission bittorrent client, indirectly
helped me with this bug: the thumbnails aren't regenerated anymore.

But this bug still exists: gnome-video-thumbnailer should wait some bigger
interval before updating the thumbnails, not doing it at every single second
for every file of the folder. Speaking of it, here is an idea:
gnome-video-thumbnailer should generate thumbnails only for the files
visible on the current nautilus view, i.e. only the files listed by the
current scroll bars position.

[Bug 460733] Re: Transmission bit-torrent doesn't honor speed limitation preferences

2010-02-16 Thread Everthon Valadão
I'm afraid it's not an UI problem, but a *resource management* problem:

It's very simple to verify: set your max global upload speed to X KB/s,
then seed something and when Transmission status bar show X KB/s upload
speed, check at the Ubuntu System Monitor or conky or /proc/whatever
and you will realize that transmission isn't uploading at X KB/s but at
something close to 2X KB/s!

So, transmission doesn't honor the (global) speed limits.

[Bug 446035] Re: iPod mounts as a normal disk in Karmic (gtkpod/others won't list the iPod), fine in Jaunty

2010-02-16 Thread Everthon Valadão
@Methieu I'm also used the proposed workaround, thanks.

But for the inexperienced or impatient user, this is a serious issue! I can't
access my iPod? What!?!
So, a fix will be very welcome before the Ubuntu Lucid release in April.

[Bug 460733] Re: Transmission bit-torrent doesn't honor speed limitation preferences

2009-12-06 Thread Everthon Valadão
@charles, try this:

- open Transmission and set the max download and upload speeds to half your
network capabilities;
- then add some torrents (e.g. ubuntu-9.10 i386, amd64 and remix releases);
- watch the network usage with the System Monitor and the alleged speed at
Transmission status bar

You will notice that the consumption will far exceed the limits you
configured, specially for the upload.

[Bug 446035] Re: iPod mounts as a normal disk in Karmic (gtkpod/others won't list the iPod), fine in Jaunty

2009-11-02 Thread Everthon Valadão
According to a songbird forum, it's because the iPod isn't mounted at
the right place. Here is a work around FIX, from the forum:

It mainly involves using the terminal to unmount and remount the
device to another directory. I believe the problems we are having is due
to the migration from udev to devkit in ubuntu karmic.

(First EJECT your iPod, then...) For example your ipod is the block
device /dev/sdb1 so I would do the following.

sudo -i #(this drops you into a root shell)
mkdir /mnt/ipod #(you can use any directory really but this is easy to
remember.)
 mount -t vfat -o rw,uid=1000,gid=1000,utf8=1,dmask=0077,flush /dev/sdb1
/mnt/ipod

(this mounts a vfat filesystem on device /dev/sdb1 to directory
/mnt/ipod owned by the user and group who's ID number is 1000, utf8
support is enabled and all changes are written to disk immediately.
Substitute 1000 for the UID and GID of your user and the group your user
is in)

After doing this, gtkpod correctly reconize and load the ipod.
source:
http://getsatisfaction.com/songbird/topics/ipod_not_connecting_on_ubuntu_karmic_9_10

UPDATE: I'm also tested a second FIX: I added another gtkpod ipod
repository, targeted to the correct mount point of the ipod. This also
worked BUT I have to manually hit the Load iPod on gtkpod to make this
easier fix work.

[Bug 460733] Re: Transmission bit-torrent doesn't honor speed limitation preferences

2009-10-30 Thread Everthon Valadão
Same here: usually the global max upload speed isn't respected at all. I
have to set they to about half the desired value to get something
slightly close to what I want.

R1) The alternative speeds are turned off, but, anyway, they are configured
exactly the same as the global speeds;
R2) All my torrents are configured to honor the global limits, so no per
torrent speeds (and I have something about 3-5 simultaneous downloads)
R3) Transmission usually fluctuates *high above* the global max speeds, with an
average of 1.5-2.0 times the global max speeds, specially for upload speeds.

I tried to perform some traffic shaping via trickle but I had no success (i.e.
`trickle -d 50 -u 10 transmission`).
BTW, rtorrent religiously respect the global max speeds and this is why I
prefer it over transmission nowadays.

[Bug 465954] [NEW] Double entry for gwibber in indicator-applet AND multiple instances of gwibber are created

2009-10-30 Thread Everthon Valadão
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: indicator-applet

WHAT HAPPENED: The first gwibber entry in indicator-applet launches a
new gwibber instance, that will be listed under evolution and empathy
(creating the double entry). So, I'll have two gwibber entries in the
indicator-applet: the last one that corresponds to the gwibber instance
and the original first entry, and it gets worse: if I click the first
entry, it will launch *another* gwibber entry, and another, and
another... I just notice this because my RAM consumption jumped to the
sky.

WHAT I EXPECT TO HAPPEN: The dual gwibber entry should be listed as one.
The first time I click it, it should launch a gwibber instance, and
after it, future clicks should bring the *unique* instance and do not
create new instances (just like Empathy does).

$ uname -a

BTW, evolution should be able to hide itself into indicator-applet.
When I close it, it doesn't run in background, so IMHO its indicator-
applet entry is useless. I have to keep evolution opened in other
workspace to get my mail checked OR open evolution with alltray to be
able to minimize it to the notification area, but in this case the mail
notification efforts will be duplicated: alltray icon and indicator-
applet icon.

[Bug 403731] [NEW] Antialiasing make plot very very slow for big tables

2009-07-23 Thread Everthon Valadão

Binary package hint: qtiplot

What I expected to happen: A quick plotting of my data.

What happened instead: Everytime I try to plot some big table (i.e.
100K+ rows), qtiplot freezes for several minutes. And worse: if I edit
something, the re-plot takes the same unnecessary amount of time.
Sincerely, this almost makes me give up of qtiplot, but today I
accidentally discovered that this precious plot time could be
drastically reduced by disabling antialiasing in the menu FormatPlot.
This turns the lots of freezed minutes in some few (non-freezed)

[Bug 350790] Re: fails to play sound when pulseaudio is running and xine backend is used

2009-06-07 Thread Everthon Valadão
Oops! Here is one interesting piece of info:

I think the freeze of pulseaudio stream could be due to trickle! I've been
launching miro with trickle (bandwidth shaper) because miro bandwidth
limitation don't work well:
   trickle -d 50 -u 5 miro.real $@

but when I launched miro without trickle, the audio freeze doesn't
occour, so no need for padsp, very strange uh?

[Bug 383667] [NEW] provide a 7zcat alias and a way to compress directly from stdin to stdout

2009-06-04 Thread Everthon Valadão
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: p7zip

1) Sometimes you just want to grep someting in a compressed text file,
but it is too big to be decompressed and then processed. This is why I
love zcat and bzcat: I could decompress and pipe it on the flow to
grep/awk/whatever, but unfortunately I do not see a 7zip cat like. 7zip
command line options are too many and hard to remember, so I put this
alias in my ~/.bashrc:

alias 7zcat='7za e $@ -so 2 /dev/null'

I wish this alias came pre-installed with p7zip :-)
OBS.: the redirection of stderr to /dev/null is because 7z doesn't have a
--quiet option (could you fix this too?)

2) I wonder if there is some way to compress with 7zip exactly like I do with
gzip:
echo foo | gzip -c foo.gz
The 7zip manpage gives this example (with gzip compression):
echo foo | 7za a dummy -tgzip -si -so foo.gz
but with 7zip compression, the closest I got was
echo foo | 7za a -t7z -si foo.7z
so, how to redirect the output to /dev/stdout when reading from /dev/stdin? I
mean, it is this possible via some bash-fu, named pipes, etc?

[Bug 330557] Re: nautilus crash right clicking on Properties of an image file

2009-05-15 Thread Everthon Valadão
When right-clicked some photo image and selected Properties, nautilus
crashes with a floating point exception (this do not happen to all my
photos, but just to some apparently random ones).

To reopen this bug report I collected some crash info with gdb (see
attached file):

   $ sudo apt-get -y install nautilus-dbg libexempi3-dbg
   $ nautilus
   $ gdb nautilus `pidof nautilus` 21 | tee gdb-nautilus.txt
(gdb) continue
at this moment I opened the image properties to cause nautilus crash
(gdb) backtrace full
(gdb) info registers
(gdb) thread apply all backtrace
(gdb) continue
(gdb) quit
   [1]+ Floating point exceptionnautilus

(I followed the steps of https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace :)

It seems to be a libexempi error, as you can see in the gdb log at line
338:

Program received signal SIGFPE, Arithmetic exception.

[Bug 363369] Re: Compositing is disabled after last updates

2009-04-24 Thread Everthon Valadão
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 363821 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/363821

I think it is a conflict situation, because I just run
`gconftool-2 --set --type=bool /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager false`
and `compiz --replace` worked!

[Bug 272089] Re: Show/hide shows the program on the workspace that was active when docked

2009-03-08 Thread Everthon Valadão
@Bruce this is not a bug, you should use the option ‘--sticky (-st)’ to show
the application on all workspaces ;-)
(check the alltray manpage to more info)

2009-01-20 Thread Everthon Valadão
@Duncan: sorry, I forgot to specify my system configs :-)

Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid [ Linux 2.6.27-9-generic i686 GNU/Linux ]

   |---Evolution 2.24.2

P.S.: I don't had this problem with Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy ( I skip the
pulse-bugged Hardy ).

[Bug 203527] Re: Clicking on clock applet hangs gnome-panel

2009-01-19 Thread Everthon Valadão
I think it have something to do with my Google Calendar accounts in
Evolution. To unfreeze the gnome-panel, I just run 'evolution --force-
shutdown', but it's quite annoying. The (web) appointments fetch of
evolution-alarm-notifier should run at background, or at least within
it's own thread to not freeze the clock/calendar application...

Same here, BUT here's a quick FIX:

sudo killall pulseaudio
sudo alsa force-reload

and them go to SystemPreferencesSound and change everything to ALSA
