[Bug 644659] [NEW] Enable extra typographic characters conflicts and overrides Adding Esperanto circumflexes option in gnome-keyboard-preferences

2010-09-21 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

On all Ubuntu versions since Adding Esperanto circumflexes option was
introduced, if conflicts with Enable extra typographic characters
option.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Go to System - Preferences - Keyboard
2. Open Layouts tab, click Options...
3. Enable Add Esperanto circumflexes (Dvorak or QWERTY, doesn't matter, I use
QWERTY).
4. Make sure Key to choose 3rd level is enabled
5. Open Gedit, type additional Esperanto characters by pressing s, c, u, j, h,
g with 3rd level key. You should get ŝ, ĉ, ŭ, ĵ, ĥ, ĝ correspondingly.
6. Back in keyboard preferences window, enable Enable extra typographic
characters located under Miscellaneous compatibility options
7. In Gedit, type the same sequence again. You'll get §, ©, ŭ, „, ĥ, ĝ — half
of the characters in question are replaced.

Desired behaviour:
The best possible thing would be to ensure we have an option to choose which
setting overrides another in this case. I suppose it's a lot of work.
My point is: people that are enabling Esperanto circumflexes do need those and
do know what they are doing. I suppose they would rather have Esperanto
characters working at the cost of §, © and „ in extra typographic characters.
Perhaps a note in the preferences window warning about this override would be
nice, too.

[Bug 527458] Re: please include status messages/tooltips

2010-06-14 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
Mark,

your comments on John's report are absolutely valid indeed (especially
the Code of Conduct part), but please consider how upset the user has to
be to express his opinion in such a way, and even more so seeing as how
neither You nor Canonical seem to listen to users that object in more
appropriate language (not that I defend his manners, of course).

And I dare say that except for the choise of words John is completely
and utterly right: by trying to smoothen the user experience on
touchscreen devices Canonical is a) ruining the user experience for
orders of magnitude more users with conventional hardware, b) does that
by breaking things that worked well for ages without providing an option
to revert back to sane settings, and, as if that wasn't enough, c) does
all this in an LTS release. As confronting the Code of Conduct as they
are, John's words seem to be the most accurate summary of the situation,
don't they?

[Bug 432814] Re: Touchpad: Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty

2010-04-14 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
As far as I'm concerned, we have some behaviour that a lot of users
don't like, we have a patch to configure the behaviour the way anybody
likes (and the patch is the debian patch, so it can be used with no
additional issues), the patch is working and — please point our if I'm
mistaken here — doesn't break anything being applied. The most sensible
thing to do right now is to include this patch in Ubuntu version of
gnome-settings-daemon and let people, not g-s-d default, deside for
themselves. Whether the current default configuration is good for
default or not is the whole other story, after all, Ubuntu is becoming
known for controversial default settings — most users don't care about
defaults as long as they can tweak things to they liking.

As of now, the issue in question is untweakable. We have a patch to make
it tweakable. Why on the Planet of Earth can't we just have this patch
included and discussion closed?!

[Bug 432814] Re: Touchpad: Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty

2010-04-14 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
Sebastien, I definitely see your point there, but let me observe that
the possibility to tweak touchpad behaviour this way is not a new
feature, it's a very old feature broken by the new g-s-d since in Karmic
and Lucid. And it's definitely not late to fix bugs, especially
regression bugs.

Alberto, thanks for the decision and your time and effort in fixing
this.

@Everybody: Is it a sound idea to open a new bug (with wishlist
priority, for sure) to include the patches Yuri has provided, or do we
from now on stick with setting up the driver and don't let g-s-d
interfere?

[Bug 432814] Re: Touchpad: Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty

2010-04-14 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
David, please consider the following: nearly all touchpads have hardware
buttons for right-click. Nearly none of them has a hardware button for
middle-click. It takes an unhuman skill to perform a 3-finger tap, so
with 2-finger tap assigned to right-button, the only usable way to
perform a middle click is to plug in a mouse. Middle clicks are of great
use in Linux (clipboard insertion to name one of the essential things),
so having no way to do them is a bad bad choise.

Anyway, that's not what the bug was about. The bug was about the fact
that there was no way to change the default behaviour at all. Now there
is a way (or will be, as soon as Alberto's upload builds), and that's
the fix. What the default setting should be is another topic altogether.

@Alberto
So do we need another bugreport to actually reflect the impossibility of
settings change (as in Yuri's patch) and deem this bug here fixed with the
changes you've provided? The fix you've supplied technically fixes this bug

[Bug 563276] [NEW] No way to tweak multi-finger tap reaction

2010-04-14 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-settings-daemon

In current Karmic and Lucid gnome-settings-daemon ignores x.org's and
synaptics driver's settings concerning 2-finger and 3-finger tap
behaviour and resets it's own hard-coded configuration as soon as an
input device is added/removed.

This behaviour effectively renders multifinger tap settings unchangeable
by the user.

Gnome-settings-daemon should either not mess with those settings at all
and inherit them from X (not a good idea since the settings in question
shoud better be per-user, not per-system), or there shoud be an option
to configure the behaviour user desires by means of gnome-settings-
daemon itself.

A patch by Yuri Khan adds the necessary keys to gconf and makes the
settings tweakable.

[Bug 554149] Re: dependency problem breaks upgrade to lucid beta1

2010-04-04 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
Michael, the tag is correct, since the problem only occurs on 64-bit
systems.

FYI: Intel's EM64T architecture found in 64-bit-capable x86-compatible
processors (Core 2 etc.) is basically a copy of AMD64 architecture (both
are know as x86-64 for a common name). AMD was the first to deliver this
architecture to market (while Intel was playing with x86-incompatible
IA-64 architecture, found in Intel Itanium processors), so historically
x86-64 architecture is called amd64 in Debian, and consequently in
Ubuntu. It works with both Intel and AMD 64bit processors, though the
name amd64 may cause confusion, as it seems to have done in your case.

[Bug 527458] Re: please include status messages/tooltips

2010-03-26 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
The only question I have about this controversial decision is: how do I
switch tooltips back on so that the behaviour is normal again? The only
valid argument about moving buttons was that it was relatively easy to
move them back into appropriate place by setting it in gconf (they
should have stayed where they belong in the first place, but well, I
don't mind Mark's experiments as long as I can keep on working the way I
see fit). Is there a way to revert this new setting?

Gerhard's patch still works, but I'm really tired of updating my PPA

[Bug 422709] Re: Karmic sound does not work after hibernation

2010-02-08 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
I have a similar problem with EeePC 1101HA: sound doesn't work after
hibernate. The problem occures when I put the machine into STD whlie
connected to AC power, and then try to wake it up on battery, but if the
machine was on battery when hibernating, waking up on battery works just
fine (I actually need more testing, but for now it seems like this is
the pattern).

Restarting ALSA doesn't bring sound back to life, and neither does pulsaudio
-k. When trying to play sound while the problem exists results in lines like
Feb 8 18:02:38 pirx pulseaudio[13890]: ratelimit.c: 91 events suppressed
Feb 8 18:03:47 pirx pulseaudio[13890]: ratelimit.c: 91 events suppressed

[Bug 428280] Re: Network printing on HP LaserJet 1018 fails

2009-09-13 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
The print server is a BusyBox-based Linux system that automatically
loads firmware to the printer as soon as it's turned on. I'm quite sure
it works correctly, since I can currently print on that printer via
network from Ubuntu 8.04 and Ubuntu 9.04 as well as from Windows XP and
Windows 7, but not from Karmic.

I have double-checked that hp-plugin is installed on my Karmic system,
and, as I said, the printer is functional when locally connected. No LPR
or RAW printing, though.

[Bug 428280] [NEW] Network printing on HP LaserJet 1018 fails

2009-09-12 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
Public bug reported:

After upgrade to Karmic, I fail to print to a networked HP LJ 1018. The
print server supports both RAW and LPR printing, and both RAW and LPR
printing used to work in Jaunty (and continue to work on Windows). With
the same printer plugged directly into Karmic machine and set up as a
local printer, printing works seamlessly.

The driver in use is HP LaserJet 1018 hpijs (the recommended one).
Karmic originally provided 5 different drivers for this printer, but
after installing this printer locally there's only hpijs driver left to
choose.

I actually can't tell if this is a cups or a hpjis problem, since I have
no other printer handy to test.

[Bug 283128] Re: Keyboard indicator shows additional layout null

2009-09-12 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
More investigation reveals the following behaviour in Karmic:
- if Extra typographic characters option is enabled in layout settings, the
extra characters can be entered, but the ?? issue exists;
- if the said option is disabled, the extra characters can still be entered,
but the ?? issue is not there.

So the Extra typografic character does nothing but trigger the bug, at
least in my configuration (105-keys, US and Russian layouts). Can anyone
confirm this?

[Bug 427780] [NEW] Russian keyboard layout lacks 3-rd level — symbol

2009-09-11 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
Public bug reported:

In current Karmic pressing - key with 3-rd level key produces — (em-
dash) in English US layout, while the same action in Russian layout
produces - (hyphen). In Jaunty Russian layout has the same — as US

[Bug 410340] [NEW] Siemens DCA-510 cable is not detected properly

2009-08-07 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.28

On current Jaunty 64-bit, the Siemens DCA-510 cable
(http://www.qbik.ch/usb/devices/showdev.php?id=2670) is unusable.

System detects the USB-to-Serial adapter in the cable correctly, loads
pl2302 module as it is supposed to, and even creates /dev/ttyUSB0 in
which the phone is supposed to be accessible. lsusb says:

Bus 003 Device 012: ID 067b:2303 Prolific Technology, Inc. PL2303 Serial
Port

which is correct (see link above). The problem is, the phone is not
accessible via /dev/ttyUSB0, neither via scmxx, nor via wvdial or even
minicom.

Also, /dev/gps0 is created as a symlink to /dev/ttyUSB0. Perhaps, system
mistakes DCA-510 for a GPS device?

[Bug 393226] [NEW] Impossible to rename a podcast using non-ASCII characters

2009-06-28 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
Public bug reported:

In a podcast's properties there's a field named Title, which is
available for editing and allows changing podcast's name into something
convenient. The problem is, only ASCII characters can be used in this
field.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Right-click on any podcast (left panel of gpodder's main window), select
Edit from the context menu.
2. Put something non-ASCII in the Title field (I use cyrillics, but symbols
like ä or å are sufficient to reproduce the bug).
3. Click the Close button.

Result: the properties window won't close. It can be closed by clicking
X button in window's header, but then the new title does not apply
(and doesn't survive gpodder's restart). More than that, the podcast in
question can not be updated until gpodder is restarted.

Expected behaviour: the properties window closes, podcast has new title
in the left panel of the main window. Expected behaviour can be observed
if only ASCII characters are used in step 2.

Bug spotted on gPodder 0.14.0 in Ubuntu 9.04 64bit.

Robert, I'm sorry for the inconvenience I've caused. The file I've

provided by Milan are a good illustration for the case.

[Bug 346227] [NEW] 2.6.28-11.36 kernel unbootable

2009-03-21 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
Public bug reported:

After today's updates, including the new kernel ver. 2.6.28-11.36,
system refuses to boot. GRUB shows error message about unsupported or
invalid executable, then falls back to menu, allowing to choose an older
kernel (2.6.28-10 or 2.6.28-9) to boot with. Attempt to boot
2.6.28-11.36 kernel into recovery mode brings the same error message.

System is 64-bit Jaunty installed on a Lenovo 3000 N100 laptop. I didn't
attach output of commands required by guidelines as the kernel in
question is not even run by GRUB, so it's impossible to run the commands
on that kernel.

[Bug 343707] [NEW] Rhythmbox tries to find a codec for a text file

2009-03-16 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

Every time I start Rhythmbox it asks me to search for a missing codec,
and never finds one. That's not surprising, as it searches for text/html
codec, which obviously does not exist.

I must say that of all the *.txt files that reside in my library folder,
this is the only one that causes such problems, other text files are
safely ignored by Rhythmbox. Perhaps, Rhythmbox should ignore this file
as well, but it doesn't.

This behaviour was introduced after upgrade to Jaunty Alpha. In Intrepid the
file was ignored as it should be.
Rhythmbox is version 0.11.99.1-0ubuntu1 on 64-bit Jaunty with all latest
updates.

[Bug 343096] Re: Gnome-Do fails to start

2009-03-15 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
Oops, I should have been more careful and do a little more thinking and
testing before reporting this bug.

I have just tried Gnome-Do under a clean user account (created for
testing purposes, nothing in ~/ but defaults), and it works with no
issues. Then I did some more search and found ~/.local/share/gnome-do/
containing more Gnome-Do configuration files. After removing that
directory the problem disappeared.

So it actually looks like there was some config left of Intrepid version
of Gnome-Do, that conflicted with a new version. My mistake was
believing that removing ~/.gconf/apps/gnome-do/ is enough to clean all
gnome-do configuration files.

I think this bug can be closed (if only incompatibility with old config
files can't be thought as a bug itself :). Sorry for drawing your time
and attention.

** Description changed:

- After upgrade to Jaunty, Gnome-Do fails to start. Here is the console
- output:
+ After upgrade to Jaunty, Gnome-Do fails to start due to some
+ incompatible configuration files left of Intrepid version in
+ ~/.local/share/gnome-do/ directory. Cleaning that solves the issue.

[Bug 343096] Re: Gnome-Do fails to start

2009-03-15 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
* It is. I did sudo aptitude purge gnome-do sudo aptitude install
gnome-do, but the problem is still there.
* Well, just opening terminal and issuing the gnome-do command results in the
described behaviour on my system.
* 64-bit.

[Bug 204566] Re: Rhythmbox keeps trying to install codecs

2009-03-14 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
I'm really surprised this bug has low priority. Having a *.txt file
somewhere in the library I have to tell Rhythmbox not to try finding a
codec for text/html every time I start it — is that sane? I mean, every
time I start Rhythmbox I'm presented with annoying evidence that this
piece of software is so poorly designed it can't tell media files from
text!

For me, this behaviour was introduced after upgrade to Jaunty Alpha, in
Intrepid Rhythmbox is clever enough not to try playing text files,
archives or spreadsheets. I don't even try to imagine the number of
annoyed users once Jaunty is released...

[Bug 87054] Re: [Needs Packaging] Microdia SN9C201 webcam driver

2009-02-18 Thread Evgeny Kuznetsov
I have already pointed out that the way this driver is currently
packaged it does not survive suspend-to-disk, either Ubuntu's default
way or via uswsusp, and after a wake-up the camera does not work any
longer (there may be other ways than reboot to reenable it, but I have
yet to find them). Is there any way to repackage the driver so that it
would unload/reload automagically on STD?
