Hi Paulo, Thanks for looking into this and sorry that I forgot bionic actually. Did all go well? [Bug 1964881] Re: Logging/Log rotation does not work for catalina.out
I prepared a patch fixing this bug. Solved the issue by changing rsyslogd and logrotated's tomcat config using syslog:adm permissions. This should be possible to apply to 22.04 and 21.10. Probably not to focal/20.04 as it is missing the patch which grants write access to `adm` group to `/var/log/tomcat9` https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tomcat9/+bug/1861881/comments/4 If combined with that, it can be applied to 20.04 also. ** Patch added: "Fixes LP: #1964881" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tomcat9/+bug/1964881/+attachment/5573761/+files/1-1.0-1ubuntu1.debdiff -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1964881 Title: Logging/Log rotation does not work for catalina.out To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tomcat9/+bug/1964881/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1964881] Re: Logging/Log rotation does not work for catalina.out
Ideas on possible fixes: In Ubuntu 20.04 * Perhaps the log directory fix can be backported, in addition this require solution 2 from below. If solution 1 is applied from below, there would be no need to backport the fix from the newer package. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tomcat9/+bug/1861881/comments/4 In Ubuntu 21.10/22.04 * Solution possibility 1: As the issue is because of the difference of the user that `rsyslogd` runs as between Debian and Ubuntu. One solution would be running `rsyslogd` as root user same as in Debian. This automatically fix everything for the foreseeable future as the Debian `tomcat` package would work fine without any modifications. * Solution possibility 2: modify /etc/logrotate.d/tomcat and replace `su tomcat adm` with `su syslog adm`. Update `/etc/syslog.d/tomcat9.conf` and replace `fileOwner="tomcat"` with `fileOwner="syslog"` This fix should be applied to every time `tomcat` is imported from upstream Debian. * Solution possibility 3: Any ideas? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1964881 Title: Logging/Log rotation does not work for catalina.out To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tomcat9/+bug/1964881/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1964881] [NEW] Logging/Log rotation does not work for catalina.out
Public bug reported: In Ubuntu 20.04, with `tomcat9-9.0.31-1ubuntu0.1` (latest) package, `logrotated` is not able to write to `/var/log/tomcat/catalina.out` In Ubuntu 22.04, with `tomcat9-9.0.58-1` (latest) package, `logrotated` is not able to rotate `/var/log/tomcat/catalina.out` The reason of missing `catalina.out` in Ubuntu 20.04 is that the `/var/log/tomcat` does not have group write permission. Therefore `syslog` user which executes `rsyslogd` is not able to write to `/var/log/tomcat` folder. A common problem between Ubuntu 20.04/22.04 is that the `/etc/rsyslog.d/tomcat9.conf` file does not have the following setting: `fileOwner="tomcat"` (which exists in upstream Debian `tomcat9` package supplied `/etc/rsyslog.d/tomcat9.conf` file) Because of the missing `fileOwner` setting, the `catalina.out` is created with `syslog:adm` ownerships. However the `/etc/logrotate.d/tomcat9` has `su tomcat adm` directive. Therefore the `logrotated` is not able to truncate the `/var/log/tomcat/catalina.out` This causes logrotate to copy the contents of `/var/log/tomcat/catalina.out` to as if it would be rotated. As `catalina.out` is never truncated, each rotated file ends up having the contents of `catalina.out` from the beginning of the tomcat installation. [Bug 1670624] Re: Official 16.04 HWE 4.8 kernels do not boot (4.4 was booting)
When I was installing the kernel it complained about possibly missing firmware files for amdgpu. Then it failed first but I blacklisted amdgpu module and it booted. Then I tried to install amdgpu-pro but that couldn't compile the module since it doesnt support 4.11. But I think it may have installed some firmware files and I could load the amdgpu module after boot. But, then I decided to try to disable amdgpu for 4.8 (worst idea ever!). Apparently everytime I boot 4.8, it destroys something from the hard drive. It somehow managed to loose /var/lib/dpkg first but after few reboots, completely lost the whole partition and even grub didnt start. I am never putting 4.8 again! So, for now, I can't really test anything anymore since ubuntu self- destructed itself. Luckily windows and freebsd are still working. Maybe I wait for Zesty before re-installing. About 4.11 kernel: I can tell that at last the basic keyboard was working in Linux/Ubuntu. Because with 4.4 it was skipping keypresses. The touchpad was much better, but still somewhat strange. Things like double tap and two-finger scrolling didn't work. At least mouse cursor was not jumping around randomly from time to time. The WIFI didn't work, I had to install rtlwifi_new driver from github. The hard drive was super slow, maybe even slower than before. I saw 0.6mbyte/s performance when I ran sysbench. The CPU fan was going full speed and laptop got hot. (least of my worries but it happened...) I would like to help more but I don't know what I can do at this stage. I am not even sure why amdgpu module was loaded, because the APU has sea islands gpu, I thought this was disabled by default? [Bug 1670624] [NEW] Official 16.04 HWE 4.8 kernels do not boot (4.4 was booting)
Public bug reported: The machine is the same machine as in this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1616830 In mid 2016 I tested 4.8 kernels on that machine and they did not boot. (and same errors apply to current situation) https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1616830/comments/5 Also Ubuntu 16.10 and newer releases do not boot anymore (as reported by a user, I think it is due to kernel). He also reports the same errors with the 4.8 kernel. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1616830/comments/15 It seems that official release kernels still have the same problems and nothing was fixed. There seem to be many problems with Ubuntu on Carrizo, black screens, random freezes. I myself experienced, keyboard problems (keyboard sometimes do not register keystrokes), touchpad works strangely, random freeze with caps-lock blinking, low disk performance (max 1.3mbytes/sec) and much more. Are you sure the black screens are your only problem? The 4.8 kernels do not boot at all. I had very strange results. First it gave errors about soft lockup. But the hardware is perfectly fine, I am running windows and xenial (albeit slow) with no crashes or errors. Also ran memtest and everything was fine. [Bug 1616830] [NEW] Bad disk performance with AMD Carrizo FCH controllers
Public bug reported: I have had a problem where importing database was much slower in a dual- boot machine when booted into ubuntu compared to running ubuntu inside virtualbox in windows 10. It seems Ubuntu does not like Amd carrizo fch I collected some information and posted here (and attached as text file to report): https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/360373 To put it short, the disk performs up to 10 times better inside virtualbox. (yes I thought about caches but VM box also has half the memory and they must favor ubuntu running on real hardware with twice ram) I believe this is a kernel/driver related problem since it directly effects disk performance. [Bug 1559245] [NEW] Pulseaudio selects HSP instead of A2DP and no way to set default action
Public bug reported: I am trying to use a bluetooth headphone with ubuntu 14.04 and system defaults to using HSP. Otherwise HSP is providing very bad quality audio. There is no way to set a default action, and system does not retain the last set setting. Eg. I can go and set the headphones to use A2DP but when I connect next time, it switches back to HSP. (I believe it could remember the device from the device id at least!) *** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1068404 *** https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1068404 I think this is not a duplicate of the bug #1068404. In some cases between fglrx updates the login prompt appears but unity does not start after logging in. However logging in as a guest user (with fresh configuration) works. Also removing all configuration from user's homedir (forcing reset) also brings back to desktop. This is not the same bug, because the poster clearly states that the lightdm login prompt appears. This means X does not crash at startup. If you look at the bug #1068404, it is clearly stated that the X crashes at startup and it is a different bug. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1069199 Title: 1002:682f Unity does not start after installing fglrx-updates Radeon HD 7700M Series To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/fglrx/+bug/1069199/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1045326] Re: using valgrind with mpirun causes problems
I tried to compile mpich2 from sources and the problem seems to be related to checkpointing (blcr package). blcr does not seem to work properly with kernel 3.x+ since kernel module does not compile https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/blcr/+bug/804943 --- Reading package lists... [Bug 1036622] Re: Slow NIS performance with programs such as 'finger'
Well, it is not like I use NIS at home all by myself :p if Ubuntu wont support it, just remove it from distribution then. So it would make the decision of which distro to use in large organisations easier. I checked the packets using tcpdump limited to the NIS server. Ubuntu had 24k lines in the output file Fedora had 2.4k lines in the output file Fedora was accessing port 767 and accessed an additional UDP port 770 and sometimes 938 on the server... while Ubuntu was just accessing 767 only so many more times... I tried disabling iptables on ubuntu altogether and still the results are same. It is just that I am getting the correct info as well and finger seems to be working. [Bug 1036622] [NEW] Slow NIS performance with programs such as 'finger'
Public bug reported: I am having slow NIS performance compared to Fedora with nearly identical configurations. I couldnt quite find out exactly what might be the problem and I also tried asking it as a question in "answers" section. All I got was a reply that I should open a bug report. https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/205634 The yp.conf is identical between Fedora and Ubuntu boxes in question. [Bug 969860] Re: fglrx uses 100% CPU when screen turns off (spinning in glXWaitVideoSyncSGI or glXSwapBuffers)
I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 to a desktop machine with Radeon HD 5870 and compiz is using 100% when the screen is off. I didnt try any of the workarounds on this machine. There are so many workarounds mentioned and half of them seem to work only for half of the people. I dont know where to start... [Bug 1007368] Re: AMD Catalyst FGLRX post-release updates driver does not install
You are right. I seem to have the latest driver from the 'additional drivers' but there is still something strange going on. We just had a new installation of Ubuntu 12.04 and AMD CCC showed different numbers there while the 12.04 in my machine which was installed a while back showed different numbers. (and I thought that was because I used AMDs installer to install newest version directly, but it appears I did not...) Unfortunately the other machine is not here now so I cant check it, but on tuesday we will re-check the installations and report back if we find or not find some discrepancies... It would be nice if the additional drivers section would print out a more understandable error message, also it is not very clear what happens if you select only post-release updates or both normal driver + post-release updates (wouldnt these both end up the same latest driver being installed?) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1007368 Title: AMD Catalyst FGLRX post-release updates driver does not install To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fglrx-installer-updates/+bug/1007368/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I could resolve this issue by adding my user to kvm and libvirtd groups. $ sudo adduser `id -un` kvm $ sudo adduser `id -un` libvirtd I believe the installer either should suggest adding the user to these groups or virt-manager should become root by asking credentials at startup. [Bug 982460] Re: Installer crashed at installation...thats all I know...
Hello, The target media in question was a 16GB Transcend Ultra-Speed USB stick. Now the stick was working fine under normal use in windows. Although I am using it on a brand new AMD Fusion laptop HP Pavilion dm1-4100. I could install Ubuntu when I tried again. However it crashed at some point, it couldnt find any commands (I was in ssh) and I couldnt shut it down either. So I guess it is possible that it lost the stick again. So, the question is, how can I test the stick in windows to find out that this is not related to stick itself but perhaps something Ubuntu does (perhaps a bad driver?) is causing this problem? Is there a practical way that you can suggest with which I can test the stick under Ubuntu? I am fairly sure that the stick is performing alright, I never had a similar issue with this stick earlier.
