That would be nice, but unfortunately impossible because of the previously mentioned incompatibility with XServer 1.6 which will be introduced in Ubuntu 9.04. [Bug 145260] Gutsy: WLAN via Network-Manager lacks long-term stability
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: network-manager Ever since I upgraded to Gutsy (fresh Tribe 5 install, by the way, just in case you wondered) wireless networking started going weird, got fixed somehow just to show even stranger issues. I'll report some of them seperately. First of all, I use an on-board IPW2200 WLAN adaptor which connects to a Linksys WRT54G most of the time. I didn't get the chance to test it on different setups, yet. The main issue at the moment is the general instability of my connection causing loss of signal and having to reconnect to the AP. Most of the time this goes without much trouble, however, sometimes it keeps trying to re-connect until the Network-Manager Daemon itself shuts down removing the nm-applet from the notification area, even though the process is still visible in the gnome-system-monitor. Unfortunately this has always happened while I'm was away from my laptop and I can't tell what happened before. Fortunately there is a log which I'll attach: Sep 26 09:25:18 rechner avahi-daemon[5118]: Withdrawing address record for fe80::20e:35ff:fe5c:f916 on eth1. [Bug 145725] Gutsy: Switching to fullscreen in Totem and having wobbly windows enabled produces a glitch

You can work around this simply by deactivating wobbly windows or Compiz entirely, but it'd be nice if it worked with wobbly windows, as well. [Bug 153072] Focused windows get blurry when dodge effect is enabled
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: compiz I've been noticing this for a while, already: If you put a window on top of another one causing the former top window to perform a dodge, the contents will get blurry, as soon as you bring it to the top again. Some more searching revealed that this particular file was once inside the package libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2 which isn't included in Hardy aymore. Unfortunately it is impossible to recompile libSPUEternal.so, because of its closed-source nature (being built in 2003) and the project being long dead. [Bug 208579] Re: VLC not using PulseAudio by default
Good. Then I'll give my two cents about this: Right now VLC is plain unusable when installed in Hardy, because it uses ALSA output by default which is seriously broken in a PulseAudio environment. It even leads to almost-complete X11 lockups. However, installing vlc-plugin-pulse fixes all that. And if there's no PulseAudio available, it will fall back to ALSA. I don't see why there should be any regressions in making VLC depend on that package, because the way it is now, VLC doesn't work at all. -- VLC not using PulseAudio by default https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/208579 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 195473] [NEW] Rhythmbox launches (and relaunches) all by itself on weird occasions
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: rhythmbox First of all, I use Hardy which includes Rhythmbox version 0.11.4-0ubuntu6 at the time I am writing this. The problem is this: Something seems to be listening to DBus or something and invoking Rhythmbox every time the name Rhythmbox appears on it. That's my theory. The easiest way to reproduce this behaviour is creating a file called "rhythmbox.txt" and opening it with Gedit. This will cause Rhythmbox to launch and relaunch if closed, until you close that particular Gedit window. This issue is really annoying, especially if you try to debug Rhythmbox with Gdb, but Rhythmbox always starts before Gdb can invoke it (this is another one of those occasions)! ** Affects: rhythmbox (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Rhythmbox launches (and relaunches) all by itself on weird occasions https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/195473 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 201406] [NEW] Totem-mozilla always overrides VLC plugin in Firefox
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: totem It seems that totem-mozilla (2.22.0-0ubuntu1) can now identify as the vlc plugin for Firefox. Which is nice if you don't want to install that VLC plugin separately. However, if you do want to use the VLC plugin for content that request it (e.g. http://www.zdf.de/ZDFmediathek/content/9602?inPopup=true) Totem will always override it, even if it is installed. There should be some routine checking for the presence of that VLC plugin (might also affect the Realplayer plugin, because Totem handles that, as well) and disabling its VLC-emulating capabilities, if a native VLC plugin is found. Nice to see it working, but wouldnt it be a better idea to install this plugin by default? Interesting idea, indeed. Novice users won't probably know much about the packages being upgraded, anyway. However, let me humbly disagree with you on one aspect: Synaptic is a tool for installing packages. As an "advanced" user it would be too much of a hassle to open it everytime I want to install a hundred and thirty updates. Just to see which version has been updated to which. Update Manager did a very good job in displaying sufficient information for people like myself who would like to see what exactly was going to happen. [Bug 7560] Re: Wastebasket fails with read only directories
I can confirm this bug. Simply run 'gksu nautilus' and select Trash from the sidebar is enough to trigger this memory behaviour. -- Wastebasket fails with read only directories https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/7560 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

By the way: Why is this showstopper bug considered "Wishlist"? [Bug 196417] Re: vlc pulseaudio support
Nice to see it working, but wouldnt it be a better idea to install this plugin by default? At the moment a novice user who heard about the "Just Works" capabilities of Ubuntu would have difficulties getting VLC to work like it used to on Windows, because Pulseaudio is installed by default in Ubuntu and apparently breaks the ALSA module enabled by default in VLC leading to almost complete system lockups once you close VLC and try to do anything with the Gnome panel. So please make VLC DEPEND on vlc-plugin-pulse. -- vlc pulseaudio support https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/196417 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
