[Bug 286424] Re: nvidia-settings crashes when user clicks Save To X Configuration File

2009-11-17 Thread Fabian A. Scherschel
I've been following this bug for quite a while and it is pretty clear
that this is *NOT* a permissions problem. I've always run nvidia-
settings with gksudo / sudo and the problem was always there. So please
don't mark as fixed because of permissions.

I have not tested this with the latest Karmic update but the program did
crash when run with root privileges on a then-uptodate Karmic as late as
last week.

2009-10-30 Thread Fabian A. Scherschel
> Did you try to customize your monitors without save to X and see what

The settings are not saved. Saving to xorg.conf is essential to save
your multi-monitor configuration with an Nvidia card as far as I have
been able to determine. Hence my comment that this bug should be fixed,
especially since the fix has been known since before Jaunty shipped...

[Bug 438335] Re: Boot messages show before xsplash kicks in

2009-10-07 Thread Fabian A. Scherschel
I completely agree with what Adrian Glaubitz has posted on the dupe Bug
443282:

The text is just *ugly* and it's a huge step backwards compared to Jaunty IMHO
! That reminds me of my days with SuSE Linux 5.3 with kernel 2.0.38 and not the
current version of Ubuntu as of fall 2009. People will complain about this. If
I want to have text boot messages, I turn splash screens off manually, but the
default boot design should be neat and all graphically. If you can't use KMS
for whatever reason, then you should have stayed with usplash.

I suggest blanking the screen completely during boot. I hope to see KMS-
based splash screens in 10.04, though.

[Bug 200868] Re: nvidia-settings doesn't have permissions to write xorg.conf

2009-06-28 Thread Fabian A. Scherschel
I for one must agree with lewmur. I think it is an absolute joke that
this hasn't been fixed by now. Users do not care how you fix it as long
as you do. In the moment, an application that everyone that I've ever
talked to uses who runs Ubuntu and has an nvidia card, is fundamentally
broken as far as the user is concerned.

I know that Launchpad isn't really meant to discuss these kinds of
things, but for goodness sakes, it's obvious that this is not intended
behaviour, right?

[Bug 314600] Re: fglrx versions newer than 8.543 cause system hang and panic

2009-03-28 Thread Fabian A. Scherschel
I figured out why even rolling back to the older version of fglrx didn't
work for me: looks like my card is fried, at least the 3D functions do
not seem to work at all. From the scorching around the GPU area, it
looks like it massively overheated (it is a passively-cooled X1300). Not
sure if this is just a coincidence or if the driver somehow caused the
card to heat up so much...

[Bug 314600] Re: fglrx versions newer than 8.543 cause system hang and panic

2009-03-27 Thread Fabian A. Scherschel
I can confirm this on Mythbuntu Intrepid. Rescue boot & xfix works for
me but as soon as I use Jockey to load the fglrx driver, the system will
hang at the next reboot before loading GDM with a black screen, totally
unresponsive system and my monitor telling me it detected an unsupported
video mode.

If I use Synaptic to roll back to 8.543 or try an older kernel, the same
thing happens. I can only use the Radeon driver at this point. Funnily,
I did the update weeks ago including reboot and all was fine. This
problem appeared out of thin air two nights ago on the running Mythbox.
I did not reboot or even log out of X. I have now rolled back the fglrx
driver, the kernel module, depmod and even Xorg itself to the versions
that came with Intrepid and I still get the same symptoms.

System is a Dell XPS 210 with Radeon X1300 card and a Dell 22" monitor.

Can confirm this on i386. It seems to be working again after doing a

I fixed the problem by doing a

Have a look in you package manager if that package is installed on your system.
If not, install it with the above command.

Fair enough.

Re: ".crash files should only be submitted through apport, they should
not be attached to existing bugs." Is it really so hard explaining why
instead of stating the mere fact again and again? I will remember it for
the future, but it makes no sense to me without any explanation.

[Bug 279820] Re: compiz.real crashed with SIGSEGV

2009-03-08 Thread Fabian A. Scherschel
I looked through the report first, of course. Apport has the ability to
send these and warns you about information leakage as well, so removing
mine was unecessary and not called for at all. Also: I am pretty sure
the report you removed included a backtrace.

I am not sure removing all the debugging info and setting this to
"incomplete" made sense...

I can confirm this on current Jaunty (patched today) with 2.6.28-8 and

Firefox at about 25% CPU load on one core, under 10% load on the other.

It seems like they are making some progress on the Gnome thread.
However, I have now dug up an external gspca cam that is experiencing

both cameras which is weird since I haven't changed anything related to
video on my system. I am beginning to think this might be a general
gstreamer issue.

OK, can you try with only one screen? Compiz often has problems on dual

KDE's KWin window manager has compositing effects (I think enabled by
default in KDE4). Since I don't have KDE4 handy right now, I can't tell
you exactly where to check but it's in the System Settings somewhere
under Appearance -> Advanced or something.

[Bug 293521] [NEW] General V4L problems in Intrepid

2008-11-04 Thread Fabian A. Scherschel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: lib32v4l-0

Ok, this is really hard to pinpoint Since moving to Intrepid 32bit
(fresh install) on my Dell XPS m1330 laptop, I am experiencing severe
webcam troubles both with the build-in cam that uses uvcvideo as well as
with an external gspca cam that announces itself using the "sonixj"
driver.

Video used to work for both cams for Flash 10, Skype and Ekiga, but
since playing with Cheese and coming across bug #290506 it has stopped
working in nearly all cases. They sporadically worked again for short
periods but not realiably.

I get many diverse error messages. Cheese sometimes segfaults, Skype
complains "process `skype' is using obsolete setsockopt SO_BSDCOMPAT".
The diverse range of applications affected leads me to believe that this
is either a bug in V4L in general, in our implementation of that or
maybe even in gstreamer as some people have suggested in other reports
I've seen.

I am happy to provide as much input and log files as needed, I njust
don't have enough experience with the video stack to know where to start
in this case.

[Bug 200868] Re: nvidia-settings doesn't have permissions to write xorg.conf

2008-11-03 Thread Fabian A. Scherschel
It is generally always a bad idea to have things run as superuser that
don't absolutely need to. Since Alberto is the maintainer for the NVIDIA
stuff, I trust his word when he says it doesn't have to. He's also
working on this, so what's the fuss about?

BTW, had you read the bug I linked, you would have seen that it is also
concerned with writing xorg.conf from nvidia-settings. For some reason
it works for me from the Administration menu without sudo. I don't know
why, but I can save to my xorg.conf.

His point is that you are not supposed to run nvidia-settings as a

[Bug 263837] Re: VMWare Server on kernel 2.6.27-2-generic: cannot compile vmmon module

2008-10-15 Thread Fabian A. Scherschel
While I can see the point about this being VMware's problem, is there
any other reason for this bug to still be set as "New"? This is quite a
crucial piece of software for a lot of people, shouldn't we try to track
this down?
