I've been following this bug for quite a while and it is pretty clear that this is *NOT* a permissions problem. I've always run nvidia- settings with gksudo / sudo and the problem was always there. [Bug 438335] Re: Boot messages show before xsplash kicks in
I completely agree with what Adrian Glaubitz has posted on the dupe Bug 443282: The text is just *ugly* and it's a huge step backwards compared to Jaunty IMHO ! That reminds me of my days with SuSE Linux 5.3 with kernel 2.0.38 and not the current version of Ubuntu as of fall 2009. People will complain about this. If I want to have text boot messages, I turn splash screens off manually, but the default boot design should be neat and all graphically. If you can't use KMS for whatever reason, then you should have stayed with usplash. I suggest blanking the screen completely during boot. I hope to see KMS- based splash screens in 10.04, though. [Bug 314600] Re: fglrx versions newer than 8.543 cause system hang and panic
I can confirm this on Mythbuntu Intrepid. Rescue boot & xfix works for me but as soon as I use Jockey to load the fglrx driver, the system will hang at the next reboot before loading GDM with a black screen, totally unresponsive system and my monitor telling me it detected an unsupported video mode. If I use Synaptic to roll back to 8.543 or try an older kernel, the same thing happens. I can only use the Radeon driver at this point. Funnily, I did the update weeks ago including reboot and all was fine. This problem appeared out of thin air two nights ago on the running Mythbox. I did not reboot or even log out of X. I have now rolled back the fglrx driver, the kernel module, depmod and even Xorg itself to the versions that came with Intrepid and I still get the same symptoms. [Bug 293498] Re: impossible to write a message when sending an e-mail on hotmail
OK, thanks for your effort. Unfortunately my French is très mauvaise. I hope someone who speaks French a lot better than me can pick this up and walk you through it. [Bug 293496] Re: Text does not update
OK, can you try with only one screen? Compiz often has problems on dual screen configurations and I have had stuff like that happen with two screens & Compiz in Gnome. KDE's KWin window manager has compositing effects (I think enabled by default in KDE4). Since I don't have KDE4 handy right now, I can't tell you exactly where to check but it's in the System Settings somewhere under Appearance -> Advanced or something. -- Text does not update https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/293496 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 293521] [NEW] General V4L problems in Intrepid
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: lib32v4l-0 Ok, this is really hard to pinpoint Since moving to Intrepid 32bit (fresh install) on my Dell XPS m1330 laptop, I am experiencing severe webcam troubles both with the build-in cam that uses uvcvideo as well as with an external gspca cam that announces itself using the "sonixj" driver. Video used to work for both cams for Flash 10, Skype and Ekiga, but since playing with Cheese and coming across bug #290506 it has stopped working in nearly all cases. They sporadically worked again for short periods but not realiably. I get many diverse error messages. Cheese sometimes segfaults, Skype complains "process `skype' is using obsolete setsockopt SO_BSDCOMPAT". The diverse range of applications affected leads me to believe that this is either a bug in V4L in general, in our implementation of that or maybe even in gstreamer as some people have suggested in other reports I've seen. I am happy to provide as much input and log files as needed, I njust don't have enough experience with the video stack to know where to start in this case. ** Affects: libv4l (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- General V4L problems in Intrepid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/293521 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 200868] Re: nvidia-settings doesn't have permissions to write xorg.conf
It is generally always a bad idea to have things run as superuser that don't absolutely need to. Since Alberto is the maintainer for the NVIDIA stuff, I trust his word when he says it doesn't have to. He's also working on this, so what's the fuss about? BTW, had you read the bug I linked, you would have seen that it is also concerned with writing xorg.conf from nvidia-settings.
