[Bug 1928624] [NEW] Firefox does not honour PulseAudio settings to decide what audio output to use

2021-05-16 Thread Fabrizio Gennari
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 21.04, Firefox 88.0.1.
The video card (Radeon RX 570) has HDMI and DisplayPort outputs. DisplayPort is
used to connect to a monitor that also has loudspeakers. The PC also has
headphones output.

In Settings/Audio, the box Output has a dropdown menu that lists, among
others, Headphones - Family 17h and HDMI/DisplayPort 5 - Ellesmere HDMI
Audio [Radeon RX 470/480/490 / 570/580/590].

When that dropdown is toggled, all applications (e.g. Video) change the
audio output, so the application audio can be heard on the selected
output. With the exception of Firefox, that always sends its audio
output to the headphones, irrespective of the dropdown.

[Bug 1894622] [NEW] Missing manpage for systemd-resolve

2020-09-07 Thread Fabrizio Gennari
Public bug reported:

On my Focal machine there is no file /usr/share/man/man1/systemd-resolve.1.gz
This means that man systemd-resolve fails.

http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/bionic/en/man1/systemd-

http://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/focal/en/man1/systemd-resolve.1.html

[Bug 867424] Re: Oneric: On boot up Firefox always displays the “Well, This Is Embarrassing” screen.

2018-11-26 Thread Fabrizio Gennari
In the most recent version (example: Firefox 63.0.3 on Cosmic) the
behaviour is different. Firefox actually blocks the restart/shutdown
process by showing a popup "X tabs will be closed". But the whole OS
also creates a modal dialog box, asking whether to cancel, reboot or
turn off, and the modal dialog boxes actually prevents the user from
closing Firefox properly using the Firefox pop-up window. If "reboot" or
"turn off" are chosen, Firefox will show the dreaded "Well, This Is
Embarrassing" screen.

This is an improvement from the previous versions. However, a proper
shutdown sequence should allow the user to close applications properly
right after initiating the reboot/shutdown procedure.

[Bug 1400089] [NEW] Every time the session is closed, next time Firefox is reopened, it shows the restore session screen

2014-12-07 Thread Fabrizio Gennari
Public bug reported:

Open Firefox.

While FIrefox is open, close the session, or reboot, or shut down and
turn on again.

Log in and reopen Firefox.

The message Well this is embarrassing with the option of restoring the
session shows up, every time.

It is as if FIrefox does not clean up properly in case the session was
ended properly, and treats it the same way as a crash.

[Bug 1341125] Re: Cannot enter floating point (double) numbers

2014-12-07 Thread Fabrizio Gennari
Sorry, but I can still reproduce it.

Precondition is that gdb is built with Python 3 support (and the one
distributed with Ubuntu 14.10 is) and the current locale has a comma as
decimal separator (I am using it_IT.UTF-8).

At startup, gdb executes _initialize_python () (in file
python/python.c): the following lines of code changhe the locale from C
(which is the appropriate one, since gdb must be able to parse numbers
that are valid in C language) to the one of the machine

1651 progname = concat (ldirname (python_libdir), SLASH_STRING, bin,
1652 SLASH_STRING, python, NULL);
1653#ifdef IS_PY3K
1654  oldloc = setlocale (LC_ALL, NULL);
1655  setlocale (LC_ALL, );

From this point on, gdb assumes that the decimal separator is a comma,
and becomes unable to parse the number 1.0

[Bug 1341125] Re: Cannot enter floating point (double) numbers

2014-11-16 Thread Fabrizio Gennari
After further investigation it seems that gdb assumes that floating-
point numbers use . as decimal mark, as these lines from c-exp.y show

else if (!got_dot  *p == '.')
  got_dot = 1;

but, later, the function parse_float() (in parse.c) feeds the string
into sscanf

  num = sscanf (copy, % DOUBLEST_SCAN_FORMAT %n, d, n);

and, apparently, sscanf is locale-sensitive, so, if the current locale has , as
decimal mark, sscanf will leave everything past the . sign unscanned. gdb,
then, notices that something is unscanned and says invalid number

[Bug 1322835] [NEW] Google Street View not working properly on Firefox 29

2014-05-24 Thread Fabrizio Gennari
Public bug reported:

Got to the new Google Maps, https://www.google.com/maps/preview
Click on the Pegman near the bottom right corner
Click on any blue street to enter the new Google Street View.
Google Street View works properly.
Now, click somewhere on the Google Street View screen to move forward along a
street.
Almost always, the view becomes black, while the rest of the screen (road
indication on top left, photos on bottom, small map on the bottom left) are OK.
Exiting Street View with the left arrow next to the road indication on top
left, does not help, the map view is also black. The side elements (search box
etc.) work.
Reloading the page restores the situation.

[Bug 1245226] Re: HDMI: audio-video playback too fast

2013-11-10 Thread Fabrizio Gennari
I downloaded the full ISO, installed it on a USB stick (using Windows'
Universal USB Installer, since usb-creator-gtk crashed constantly) and
booted from it.

Anyway, there was an upgrade of the kernel to 3.11.0-13-generic. I am
running the standard Ubuntu 13.10 with kernel 3.11.0-13-generic and
everything works.

After upgrading to Ubuntu 13.10, selecting HDMI as audio output device
is broken. Audio is played back at high speed. When playing back video
clips, the video frames are also too fast. Note that, when selecting

[Bug 1245226] Re: HDMI: audio-video playback too fast

2013-10-30 Thread Fabrizio Gennari
I tested by watching YouTube videos (Firefox + Adobe Flash plug-in),
watching clips with Totem, launching

gst-launch-1.0 uridecodebin uri=file://path to music file ! pulsesink

and

gst-launch-1.0 uridecodebin uri=file:///path to music file ! alsasink

and

aplay path to WAV file

Same result.
I take pride in not being an MPlayer user, however, the above tests made with
GStreamer and alsa's aplay seem to show that the problem is not in Pulseaudio
but in the audio drivers.

How do I know whether my hdmi lcd monitor has EDID? It is fairly modern,
and it worked when Ubuntu 13.04 was installed.

[Bug 1245226] Re: HDMI: audio-video playback too fast

2013-10-30 Thread Fabrizio Gennari
Both gst-launch-1.0 and aplay work if the default device is set to
analog headphones in gnome-control-center, and do not work correctly if
the default device is set to HDMI.

I tried the following:
speaker-test -c2 -t wav -D hdmi:1,DEV=0

gst-launch-1.0 uridecodebin uri=file:///path to music file ! alsasink
device=hdmi:1

and the sound is too fast in both cases.

I typed dmesg: here is an excerpt of the output

[Bug 1245226] [NEW] HDMI: audio-video playback too fast

2013-10-27 Thread Fabrizio Gennari
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Ubuntu 13.10, selecting HDMI as audio output device
is broken.

Audio is played back at high speed. When playing back video clips, the
video frames are also too fast.

This is similar to an old bug I reported some time ago,
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/897008 . In that
case, adding radeon.audio=1 to the kernel command line solved.

Now, the configuration is unchanged since when Ubuntu 13.04 was running

$cat /proc/cmdline
BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-3.11.0-12-generic
root=UUID=10b9da6b-d735-48a7-bc45-2c1fc81183dd ro quiet splash radeon.audio=1
vt.handoff=7

yet audio is broken.

Note that, when selecting headphone as audio output device, everything
works.

2013-05-23 Thread Fabrizio Gennari
I tried the Ubuntu 13.04 live cd: with that it works! Sound from the
headphones using pulseaudio. Headphones have to be manually selected,
but who cares.

So, what can be wrong with Ubuntu installed on the HD? Some wrong
configuration bit?

[Bug 1070532] Re: [MS-7623, VIA VT1828S, Green Headphone Out, Front] No sound at all

2013-05-04 Thread Fabrizio Gennari
There must have been some problems in communicating the problem, seeing
as it's been misunderstood constantly.

Auto mute of the speaker is a nice-to-have feature, but _it is not the problem_.
There's nothing wrong with ALSA: the fact that gst-launch with alsasink works
should already have pointed out to that. However, I tested an even more direct
way to prove that

aplay -D hw:CARD=HDMI,DEV=3 a WAV file

sound correctly played from the monitor's speakers

aplay -D hw:CARD=SB,DEV=2 a WAV file

sound correctly played from the front green headphone jack (as long as a
headphone is connected there)

aplay -D hw:CARD=SB,DEV=0 a WAV file

sound correctly played from the rear green headphone jack (as long as a
headphone is connected there)

aplay a WAV file

sound correctly played from the selected PulseAudio device (using gnome-
control-center sound's window to select a device), AS LONG AS THE DEVICE
IS NOT ANALOG HEADPHONES. If the selected device is analog headphones,
no sound is played at all (needless to say, this happens with headphones
plugged)

This is still happening with the recent 13.04

[Bug 1070532] Re: [MS-7623, VIA VT1828S, Green Headphone Out, Front] No sound at all

2013-02-18 Thread Fabrizio Gennari
If I type

gst-launch-0.10 uridecodebin uri=file://path of sound file ! alsasink
device=hw:1,3

I can hear the sound through the monitor's speakers, and with

gst-launch-0.10 uridecodebin uri=file://path of sound file ! alsasink
device=hw:0,2

I can hear the sound through the headphones.

Yet, If I use gnome-control-center - Audio (which, if I understood
correctly, simply instructs pulseaudio which device to use), when
choosing Analog headphones, no sound comes at all, while when choosing
HDMI/DisplayPort sound comes from the monitor speakers.

So: the headphones work, but there's something wrong in pulseaudio. But
what?

No way to fix the whole system (rather than being forced to use one
application, which isn't even installed)?

However, if it can help testing, I know how to make pipelines with gst-
launch-0.10. Which para, eters should be passed to alsasink to do the
same?

[Bug 1070532] [NEW] [MS-7623, VIA VT1828S, Green Headphone Out, Front] No sound at all

2012-10-23 Thread Fabrizio Gennari
Public bug reported:

The same PC can boot WIndows: the headphones work correctly there (even
to the point that the default audio output is automatically muted when
the headphones are plugged in).

The headphones have an integrated microphone, which is also plugged in
the (pink) front connector. The microphone works OK.

There is an HDMI connector as well as the front and back jack
connectors. Without adding radeon.audio=1 to the kernel boot options,
the HDMI output on the same PC booted with Ubuntu does not work.

[Bug 918177] [NEW] Cannot use adb on 64-bit machine because libncurses5:i386 cannot be installed

2012-01-18 Thread Fabrizio Gennari
Public bug reported:

adb (the multi-purpose Android tool) is made available for download by
Google.

The available version is 32-bit only. Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit is able to run
32-bit executables, but in the case of adb there's a problem.

adb needs libncurses.so.5, and libncurses5:i386 cannot be installed on
64-bit machines: it clashes with the plain libncurses5, needed by many
fundamental applications.

Until libncurses5:i386 and libncurses5:amd64 can be installed in
parallel, adb cannot be run. This is a serious impediment for wannabe
Android developers with 64-bit machines.

[Bug 917569] [NEW] Installation of libgtk2.0-dev requests uninstallation of libssl-dev:i386

[Bug 897008] Re: HDMI: no sound, video too fast

2011-12-10 Thread Fabrizio Gennari
So, basically, if radeon.audio=1 is added manually, HDMI audio works
(with blank screens on a lot of systems, but not here). Instead, the
default is that an HDMI audio device is shown in the list of audio
devices, but it is broken. This goes against the policy of having sane
defaults. If HDMI audio is disabled upstream, the HDMI audio device must
not be shown at all. Or, alternatively, it must be shown greyed out with
instructions on how to activate it (and warnings about possibility of
blank screens). For sure, the way Ubuntu 11.10 works is not the right
way.

Thank you, radeon.audio=1 solved.

A cleanup of /var/lib/dkms/ from old cruft also solved the compilation
problems

2011-11-28 Thread Fabrizio Gennari
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected oneiric running-unity

** Description changed:

Since the 11.10 upgrade, when Digital stereo (HDMI) is chosen as audio
ouptut (audio settings, Output tab), no sound comes, and video playback
is very fast, as if there's no pause between frames.

There are 2 entries in the output tab. One is RS880 Audio Device [Radeon
HD 4200] Digital Stereo [HDMI], the other is Internal audio stereo
  analog.

No problems when the other output is selected. Even video oplayback is
  OK.

- Some search results say that this happen when the HDMI monoitor is
- disconnected and HDMI is selected. In this case, the monitor is
- connected with HDMI and video has no problem. Also. the exact same
- configuration did not have this problem in 11.04

[Bug 897008] [NEW] HDMI: no sound, video too fast

2011-11-27 Thread Fabrizio Gennari
Public bug reported:

Since the 11.10 upgrade, when Digital stereo (HDMI) is chosen as audio
ouptut (audio settings, Output tab), no sound comes, and video playback
is very fast, as if there's no pause between frames.

There are 2 entries in the output tab. One is RS880 Audio Device [Radeon
HD 4200] Digital Stereo [HDMI], the other is Internal audio stereo
analog.

No problems when the other output is selected. Even video oplayback is
OK.

Some search results say that this happen when the HDMI monoitor is
disconnected and HDMI is selected. In this case, the monitor is
connected with HDMI and video has no problem. Also. the exact same
configuration did not have this problem in 11.04

** Affects: linux (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Incomplete

Not even installing Evolution solved the problem (even though Evolution
shouldn't be a dependency in any case...). It worked before upgrading to
11.04.
