[Bug 455623] [NEW] Multiple parallel file copies to USB are slower than sequential processing

2009-10-19 Thread Fahim Abdun-Nur
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

So here's my scenario: Multiple *.avi files are being copied over to an
8GB USB stick.

a) If I select all files from the source, copy, and then paste into the
nautilus view for the USB drive, everything is processed sequentially.
Time to completion roughly around 10 minutes

b) If instead I try to copy over each file individually (say I start to
copy one file, then go back to the source folder, and copy over another
file), things are horribly slow. I get the (fancy and cool, btw!) file
operation dialog for each file...unfortunately, the time it now takes
has been multiplied incrementally (we're talking hours now). It seems
like copies are being made in parallel and things slow down.

Now, I'm not sure what causes this. Could it be a limitation of the USB
controller or something? I haven't tried replacing the USB drive in the
above scenario, with say another internal hard disk, but I suspect its
still affected.

Sorry for the not so technical bug report; if you need further details
please let me know!

I'm forced to deselect the tab with the pdf.

Really annoying.

Thanks!

I found this fix in the Ubuntu Forums and it worked for me:

 Open a Terminal

* sudo gedit /etc/init.d/bluetooth
* Find the pkill -TERM bluetoothd line
* Replace it with pkill -TERM bluetoothd || true
Save it and run sudo apt-get upgrade. It will prompt you if you want to
overwrite the /etc/init.d/bluetooth file, hit N to keep your changes. Then
hit enter and it should update correctly.

[Bug 263555] Re: [intrepid] 2.6.27 e1000e driver places Intel ICH8 and ICH9 gigE chipsets at risk

2008-09-24 Thread Fahim Abdun-Nur
Came in to work this morning and updated my intrepid system, noticed a
new kernel and had to update. When the system came back up, eth0
disappeared. Now I have no network connection at all. :( Did an lspci,
and I have an Intel 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection (rev 02)

I'm guessing (and I'll admit I'm a *nix novice) that this is due to the
e1000e driver being disabled and eth0 never being loaded. An ifconfig
returns nothing other than lo. Booting into Windows XP seems a-OK and I
have full network access (haha, haven't booted into XP in quite a while
and was prompted to update a gazillion Win-updates...anyways, I
digress).

This was marked fixed (?) last night; seems to have caused me more
trouble. Any ideas/recommendations? If and when a fix is released, I
guess I'll have to copy over and install the debs on a usb stick. Oh
well, it is alpha after all.

[Bug 269340] Re: Not able to connect to network

2008-09-12 Thread Fahim Abdun-Nur
There could be countless permutations of what could be a misconfiguration issue
somewhere; requesting additional info:
- What *ubuntu release are you running?
- What output do you get when you issue ifconfig on a terminal?

Could be a miriad of issues (dns, dhcp, etc. etc.). I'm personally
running the latest and greatest package version (for intrepid though)
and everything seems fine...

Ok, I'm back home (i.e. the Intel 915 system), and mistakenly decided to
update the kernel once more to 2.6.27.2 from 27.1. :(

I'm guessing I'll just have to wait till 8.10 formally comes out before
I'll try again. Or I could try reverting back to 27.1

2008-08-28 Thread Fahim
Thanks Leann! Took your suggestion and installed the latest kernel (and
re-installed usplash and the corresponding ubuntu theme package; I think
I already had v86d installed manually before)

As the system went down, got the usual red screen with white bars I saw
when I had usplash installed. In any case, was more interested to see
what would happen as the system came back up: I didn't get a completely
blank screen (instead got a message from a monitor something along the
lines of it not supporting that display mode/resolution). But more
importantly, proceeded to gdm!!! :)

On another good note, also I'm no longer seeing the VBE-related errors
in the dmesg logs

Oddly enough, on a cold boot I was actually surprised to see the almost-
forgotten Ubuntu startup splash bar rendered properly. I'm still seeing

apparently seeing.

This is on a Dell GX280 system with GMA900 graphics. I'll give it a try
tomorrow on my work PC which is an Optiplex 755 with GMA3100 (?) Not
even sure this has anything to do with the graphics card/IGP...I doubt
it. But definitely interested in seeing if the new kernel really does do
the trick or not

2008-08-27 Thread Fahim
Not that I'm being pushy in any way, but was wondering if there was a
planned fix (and rough timeframe) for this. I've gotten by for the most
part by removing usplash (prior to this I was getting a completely blank
screen, so I ssh'ed, apt-get removed, and rebooted, and voila I can see
the gdm login screen), but in any case I presume it'll be resolved by
the time 8.10 is formally released.

[Bug 248644] Re: Ubuntu Remote Desktop - Connection Refused - Intrepid Ibex Alpha 2

2008-07-26 Thread Fahim
Apparently, the server never got started?

Once logged in, had to manually start sudo /usr/lib/vino/vino-server to
get the VNC server started and listening.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ nmap localhost

Starting Nmap 4.53 ( http://insecure.org ) at 2008-07-26 12:37 EDT
Interesting ports on localhost (127.0.0.1):
Not shown: 1708 closed ports
PORT STATE SERVICE
22/tcp open ssh
139/tcp open netbios-ssn
445/tcp open microsoft-ds
631/tcp open ipp
5900/tcp open vnc
8000/tcp open http-alt

So this could in fact be more a Gnome issue and not necessarily a fault
in vino. If anybody's looking at this, let me know if you need any
further logs etc. etc.

Re: [Bug 249037] Re: After upgrade, nothing shows up on screen during and after boot

2008-07-26 Thread Fahim
Hi Bobby, Yes; I noticed the multiple load bars as well first time
around...of course, the next time I rebooted, I was back to the scenario of
a blank screen.

So removing/installing usplash didn't seem to work (and neither did
v86d)

Has anyone tried reinstalling usplash? I just removed it, and
reinstalled it to try a few things (which I later reverted), and forgot
to remove it. Upon restart, it worked and gdm loaded.

If this works for anyone else, maybe there's some specific difference
between the default config and the config after reinstalling. I'm no
 expert, you guys can decide.

Wanted to point out that after this, I seem to get multiple load bars...
like, there's on load bar, and then another load bar forms some where
else (but it doesn't have the orange status bar inside it). Maybe
another bug, or just my computer?

[Bug 249037] Re: After upgrade, nothing shows up on screen during and after boot

2008-07-25 Thread Fahim
Yep; upgraded to Intrepid from Hardy just a couple of days ago. (I too
have the 915 chipset)

A bit drastic, but I've tried this a couple of times, and the way I've
resorted to consistently getting an actually usable UI (there's only so
much I can do with ssh) is by removing usplash

sudo apt-get remove usplash

Waiting for an eventual fix, but in the meantime I can survive seeing
semi-coherent text go by without having a fancy boot splash screen...

[Bug 248644] Re: Ubuntu Remote Desktop - Connection Refused - Intrepid Ibex Alpha 2

2008-07-25 Thread Fahim
My VNC client reports Connection refused (10061).

Furthermore, the vnc server doesn't seem to be running on port 5900 (or
at all) when I did a netstat -l

Any ideas?
