[Bug 455623] [NEW] Multiple parallel file copies to USB are slower than sequential processing

2009-10-19 Thread Fahim Abdun-Nur
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

So here's my scenario: Multiple *.avi files are being copied over to an
8GB USB stick.

a) If I select all files from the source, copy, and then paste into the
nautilus view for the USB drive, everything is processed sequentially.
Time to completion roughly around 10 minutes

b) If instead I try to copy over each file individually (say I start to
copy one file, then go back to the source folder, and copy over another
file), things are horribly slow. I get the (fancy and cool, btw!) file
operation dialog for each file...unfortunately, the time it now takes
has been multiplied incrementally (we're talking hours now). It seems
like copies are being made in parallel and things slow down.

Now, I'm not sure what causes this. Could it be a limitation of the USB
controller or something? I haven't tried replacing the USB drive in the
above scenario, with say another internal hard disk, but I suspect its
still affected.

Sorry for the not so technical bug report; if you need further details
please let me know!

[Bug 442078] Re: Buttons in Eclipse not working correctly with GTK+ 2.18.1-1

2009-10-19 Thread Fahim Abdun-Nur
Wow, thanks for that variable setting! I've been silently suffering when
a quick google search resulted in this bug report. I used to just click
on the button with nothing happening (thankfully it did get focus, so I
just got used to hitting the space bar to invoke the button's action)

Cheer!

I have three ubuntu desktop machines all running karmic. The weird thing is
that it seems fine at home (well at least I see some round icon there,

however, the two other machines still have no icon and only display the
logged in user account name.

When opened again, I try recovering the tabs, and bam...it crashes

I'm forced to deselect the tab with the pdf.

Really annoying.

hit enter and it should update correctly.

[Bug 263555] Re: [intrepid] 2.6.27 e1000e driver places Intel ICH8 and ICH9 gigE chipsets at risk

2008-09-24 Thread Fahim Abdun-Nur
Came in to work this morning and updated my intrepid system, noticed a
new kernel and had to update. When the system came back up, eth0
disappeared. Now I have no network connection at all. :( Did an lspci,
and I have an Intel 82566DM-2 Gigabit Network Connection (rev 02)

I'm guessing (and I'll admit I'm a *nix novice) that this is due to the
e1000e driver being disabled and eth0 never being loaded. An ifconfig
returns nothing other than lo. Booting into Windows XP seems a-OK and I
have full network access (haha, haven't booted into XP in quite a while
and was prompted to update a gazillion Win-updates...anyways, I
digress).

This was marked fixed (?) last night; seems to have caused me more
trouble. Any ideas/recommendations? If and when a fix is released, I
guess I'll have to copy over and install the debs on a usb stick. Oh
well, it is alpha after all.

[Bug 269340] Re: Not able to connect to network

2008-09-12 Thread Fahim Abdun-Nur
There could be countless permutations of what could be a misconfiguration issue
somewhere; requesting additional info:
- What *ubuntu release are you running?
- What output do you get when you issue ifconfig on a terminal?

Could be a miriad of issues (dns, dhcp, etc. etc.). I'm personally
running the latest and greatest package version (for intrepid though)
and everything seems fine...
