[Bug 245791] [NEW] Slmodemd group name has invalid characters

2008-07-05 Thread Fish R. Cynic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sl-modem-daemon

Ubuntu Hardy

users and groups
unlock
manage groups
Slmodemd
Properties

found after unlocking
checking various groups for user permissions
Slmodemd group settings cannot be changed
can be viewed but have to cancel to leave

clicking ok gives you this

Group name has invalid characters
Please set a valid group name consisting of lower
case letter followed by lower case letters and numbers

[out of curiosity what is a lower case number :-)]

I believe the capital S on Slmodemd may be the issue :-] or :-)ete or
even rotfl

Ubuntu Hardy
 lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 8.04.1
Release:8.04

apt-cache policy sl-modem-daemon
sl-modem-daemon:
  Installed: 2.9.10+2.9.9d+e-pre2-5ubuntu4
  Candidate: 2.9.10+2.9.9d+e-pre2-5ubuntu4
  Version table:
 *** 2.9.10+2.9.9d+e-pre2-5ubuntu4 0
500 http://ca.archive.ubuntu.com hardy/restricted Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

i expected to be able to click ok whether modifying or not modifying the group
settings
as per all the other groups i visited.

Slmodemd group does not allow this

This may affect other permissions if group name is incorrect format.

ie i am having more difficulty consistently with ALSA and atiixp with Hardy
than with Feisty or Gutsy (ie slmodemd normally took care of atiixp-modem
but does not seem to do so as nicely in Hardy but up to now i have
never looked at the group permissions for this group)

** Affects: sl-modem (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 228763] Re: Rhythmbox does nothing when I hit play on a song

2008-07-06 Thread Fish R. Cynic
i do not think this is pulse audio per se

i started a post today
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5331873#post5331873

i have this issue with rhythmbox
using -d and sound set to oss rhythmbox box keeps playing albeit now skipping
thru songs

it should be noted not just mouse clicks cause the oss skips now
typing this also is causing skips

summary
with pulseaudio sound playback stops but rhythmbox can quit gracefully
with alsa playback stops but rhythmbox has to be force closed
with oss playback continues but skips with keyboard, mouse interaction

maybe this is unrelated but when i start rhythmbox from music applet
with pulseaudio can quit gracefully
with alsa always force quit
with oss it skips

this affects gutsy too
gutsy peer to peer does not work
hardy peer to peer does not work
hardy to gusty peer to peer does not work
gutsy to hardy peer to peer does not work

hardy reads a windows xp share just fine
gutsy reads a windows xp share just fine

both i386 and amd64 affected

similar issue when opening file over network from totem gives this
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ totem
JACK tmpdir identified as [/dev/shm]
** Message: Error: Could not read from resource.
gstgnomevfssrc.c(703): gst_gnome_vfs_src_create (): /play/source:

also a windows machine can read the files correctly from gutsy or hardy

might be somebodys idea of a security patch

[Bug 245791] Re: Slmodemd group name has invalid characters

2008-09-22 Thread Fish R. Cynic
sorry had to find the usb drive with intrepid on it (had upgraded from hardy)
had an issue with the source compile - fixed a minor issue and installed - but
did not change the group name
however manually changing the group in /etc/group to lowercase worked like a
charm
(upgrade might not have been the answer)

i will remove the package and install your package and see how it
installs

i do thank you for taking the time to look at this.

[Bug 245791] Re: Please consider using the slmodemd group instead of Slmodemd

2011-10-21 Thread Fish R. Cynic
I had forgotten about this issue - as luck would have it I have re-inherited
the machine that actually uses this. I have to do a little soldering first but
will be attempting oneiric on it as well. I guess a small s just doesn't have
the same appeal as a big S. (and I thought this was a cold Case)
I apologize for missing the 2010 post - I know you know but if it helps i still
get this "message" on my current desktop when looking at the group. (oneiric
amd64). I will be using this on the actual machine in approximately a week -
have to tear down the laptop to solder.
Thank you for continued interest.
As per bug 879453 i don't think anything will change in the status of this but
hey thanks for the info.

did that and basically reinstalled all packages.

ran into multiple dependency issues with various php packages and programs
including rhythmbox
that use them.

uninstalled offenders and reinstalled them and system works perfectly

sorry for the slow response.

(its interesting to note that 4 machines upgraded via beta did not have these
issues. I upgraded
another one to 12.04 final and had similar issues, resolved as per above. I am
in the process of
upgrading a third and it appears to have the same issues. These machines have
had multiple os
upgrades, but all run fine (except for the last one, i haven't fixed it yet).
I think the issues
are 3rd party repositories i have used installing their versions conflicting
with the ubuntu ones.
All is good.
PS I like unity - it works well for me.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 90710 ***

i have to remember to check the mail
(this machine uses thunderbird with webmail so i neglect to http
most of the time - the feisty machine is more fun)

the frontend app closes correctly now, thank you
( i will check the reports much more carefully now, not just the
"enduser" description)

It appears that the latest set of upgrades for gutsy has allowed the
music-applet to run.
it at least appears to be and is functional

2011-06-27 Thread Fish R. Cynic
Sorry should have replied earlier
Had tried the previous build(s) with no success and installed madwifi which
works.
seems to be an authentication issue from dmesg but its on another laptop
and i don't have access to it at the moment.
will uninstall madwifi (hopefully tonight) and try recommended kernels.
and apologies for not responding earlier.

[Bug 316862] Re: Nautilus fails to browse windows shares

2010-07-05 Thread Fish R. Cynic
2 upgrades amd64 lucid
1 fresh install x86 lucid
1 fresh install amd64 lucid
1 8.04 server
1 xp mce
2 xp home

without wins - same old intermittent nautilus / networking
(xp reports master browser issues interestingly enough)

will try to attempt this from

http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-
Collection/NetworkBrowsing.html#browse-force-master

Forcing Samba to Be the Master

Who becomes the master browser is determined by an election process
using broadcasts. Each election packet contains a number of parameters
that determine what precedence (bias) a host should have in the
election. By default Samba uses a low precedence and thus loses
elections to just about every Windows network server or client.

If you want Samba to win elections, set the os level global option in smb.conf
to a higher number. It defaults to 20. Using 34 would make it win all elections
over every other system (except other Samba systems).
 -
will try making the ubuntu machines all 34 to see what happens
(maybe ubuntu needs to win the elections to fix the mixed os issue)

(works good with a wins server still)

[Bug 316862] Re: Nautilus fails to browse windows shares

2009-04-30 Thread Fish R. Cynic
i am still using a wins server as that is the only way i get consistent results
even with the xp machines.
new jaunty installs do not network smoothly (ie connections may or may not work
with mostly may not work)
as soon as i add the wins server ip address to smb.conf -and restart samba -
networking is good again

network consists of 2 xp mce, 2 xp home, 1 xp pro machines (all sp3)
1 hardy amd64, 1 intrepid server, 2 jaunty amd64, 2 jaunty (all up to date)

without wins - xp to xp connections are even iffy especially between different
versions
with wins it works

[Bug 316862] Re: Nautilus fails to browse windows shares

2009-06-14 Thread Fish R. Cynic
not an ubuntu issue - but interesting to note- a mixed xp pro - xp media center
"workstations" with a win 2000 server and a win 2003 server - required wins
server to be used to allow "workgroup" consistent connectivity (slightly
simpler than
dns as servers are not internet connected but some workstations are - dhcp from
router). Could be chasing our collective tails.
