[Bug 352303] [NEW] hal will not start if fdi-cache is corrupted

2009-03-31 Thread Florent Xicluna
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hal

I got a crash of my system during a package update.
After reboot, the system becomes unusable: keyboard and mouse were disabled.

It was not easy to troubleshoot the issue.
Finally I discovered that the hal daemon refuses to start because
/var/cache/hald/fdi-cache was corrupted (empty file)
I had to enter recovery mode and delete /var/cache/hald/fdi-cache to rescue
the system.

I believe that the hal daemon should not fail when the cache is corrupted.
It should rebuild the cache and start normally.

[Bug 347814] [NEW] Restart Now does not reboot but suspends to disk

2009-03-24 Thread Florent Xicluna
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-notifier

If the system was previously sent to hibernation, the behaviour of the
Restart Now button is wrong.

Here are the steps to reproduce :
 - Suspends the system to disk
 - Resume the system
 - Trigger the notifier popup manually (if you do not have a pending update)

u...@jaunty$ sudo /usr/share/update-notifier/notify-reboot-required
u...@jaunty$ sudo touch /var/lib/update-notifier/dpkg-run-stamp

Wait few seconds, then click the notifier icon and button Restart Now.
The system is suspended to disk instead of reboot.

[Bug 347814] Re: Restart Now does not reboot but suspends to disk

2009-03-24 Thread Florent Xicluna
I experienced similar misbehaviour with the sleep feature.

 - send the system to sleep (=suspend to RAM)
 - resume the system
 - trigger the notifier applet and click Restart Now

result: the system is suspended to RAM !

notes:
 - system is Xubuntu 9.04
 - I use the xfce4-session-logout applet to sleep or hibernate the system

[Bug 314805] Re: No webcam found, says capture extension not loaded

2009-03-24 Thread Florent Xicluna
@amw3465

The easiest workaround is the one described in comment 2 or 3 (depending
if it is Ubuntu 64bits or 32bits):

 - Launch a console
 - Type:
u...@jaunty$ export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so
u...@jaunty$ amsn

 - If it works, you can create a shell script in folder /usr/local/bin:
u...@jaunty$ sudo nano /usr/local/bin/amsn

 - Type
  #!/bin/sh
  LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so exec /usr/share/amsn/amsn

 - And set the executable bits
u...@jaunty$ sudo chmod ugo+x /usr/local/bin/amsn

 - This script will be launched when you select aMSN in the menu

[Bug 139057] Re: Should try given password for next partition

2009-03-23 Thread Florent Xicluna
I have the same issue with Jaunty.
Here is the script to try same password for next device.

You can patch the file in place, or copy the file to
/etc/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top/ before to patch it: it will override
the file in /usr/share.
Then run sudo update-initramfs -u.

And if you want to force decryption of all devices in /etc/crypttab
during the initramfs stage, you can drop this additional file in the
hooks folder.

Tested on Jaunty alpha.

 - But I still have an error when I switch to another VT (even if it works OK)

2009-03-16 Thread Florent Xicluna
Scott,

I still have the problem in initramfs (like reported by Aurius).
  module-init-tools 3.7~pre9-1
  initramfs-tools 0.92bubuntu25

The workaround add ehci_hcd to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules provided
by Javier works for me.

The workaround MODULES=dep provided by Dimitrio DOES NOT work for me.

here is the output of the modalias thing (just in case) :

[Bug 341363] Re: [drm:i915_getparam] *ERROR* Unknown parameter 6

2009-03-13 Thread Florent Xicluna
I tracked the events that produced such messages.

1/ During boot
[ 54.163231] [drm:i915_getparam] *ERROR* Unknown parameter 6
[ 55.267287] [drm:i915_getparam] *ERROR* Unknown parameter 6

2/ First time you press Ctrl+Alt+Fx to switch to VT x (x=2), the screen
flickers but it does not switch to the requested VT
[ 413.364710] [drm:i915_get_vblank_counter] *ERROR* trying to get vblank count
for disabled pipe 0

3/ Second time you press Ctrl+Alt+Fx, it switches to the VT x, but write
another error :
[ 417.776700] [drm:i915_get_vblank_counter] *ERROR* trying to get vblank count
for disabled pipe 0

4/ When I lock the screen, with command xflock4 (XFCE desktop), it becomes
black normally. But an error is written:
[ 781.018880] [drm:i915_getparam] *ERROR* Unknown parameter 6

Hope it helps.

I suspect this is really an old problem (not just Jaunty) as I am able to see
recommendations to do
  # ln -s /bin/lsmod /sbin/lsmod

for different reasons on different distributions. So it is possible that
  the problem is not Jaunty-specific.

To be sure that module-init-tools does not create a link in
postinstallation script, I reinstalled it - no link has been created.

[Bug 340301] Re: powernowd does not start cleanly on Jaunty

2009-03-11 Thread Florent Xicluna
** Description changed:

  Two problems with script /etc/init.d/powernowd:

[Bug 336631] [NEW] python-xml depends on python ( 2.6)

2009-03-02 Thread Florent Xicluna
Public bug reported:

I have python2.5 and python 2.6 both installed on Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04.

[Bug 336631] Re: python-xml depends on python ( 2.6)

2009-03-02 Thread Florent Xicluna
I installed a package which is built for python2.5 and requires pyxml to work
correctly.
The statement which fails is from xml import xpath...

For backward compatibility, it should be allowed to keep python-xml
installed for Python 2.5, even if you install python2.6 on your system.

Or I missed something...

[Bug 202959] Re: [hardy] generating locales stalls on 64mb ram

2008-08-12 Thread Florent Xicluna
AFAIK it is not a duplicate:
- all comments until comment 19 (2008-06-30) are related to a fresh install
on a low memory system.
- but comments posted after 2008-07-16 (FactTech) are related to a Gutsy-Hardy

All the me-too reports related to an upgrade (after 2008-07-16) should be
attached to bug #249340.

[Bug 228784] Re: xfce4-session-logout : Incomplete French locale

2008-06-24 Thread Florent Xicluna
Here is a minimal patch for Hardy, against 4.4.2-2ubuntu2.

This SRU aims to fix a regression introduced with Hardy.
It has low risk, since there's only 3 files touched, no source code:
* debian/changelog
* debian/patches/series
* debian/patches/08_fix_xubuntu_translations.patch

The translation patch is minimal. For each PO file:
* it appends 7 new strings, specific for (x)ubuntu, with translations extracted
from the last Intrepid tarball
* it changes case for 2 other strings
* it removes 1 obsolete string (End Session, replaced with Switch user)

** Changed in: xfce4-session (Ubuntu Hardy)
   Status: Triaged = In Progress

[Bug 241846] [NEW] plugin fails to start when a MMC/SD card is inserted

2008-06-21 Thread Florent Xicluna
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xfce4-sensors-plugin

when an SD card is present in the SD/MMC card reader, the plugin fails
with error message in a popup:

x--x
hddtemp was not executed correctly although it is executable ... not being
setuid root.

An easy but dirty solution is to run chmod u+s /usr/sbin/hddtemp as
root user and restart the plugin or its panel.

Calling /usr/sbin/hddtemp -n -q /dev/mmcblk0 gave the following error:
ERREUR: /dev/mmcblk0: Impossible de détecter le type de bus (ou ce type de bus
est inconnu)
x--x
Approximated translation:
ERROR: /dev/mmcblk0: Unable to detect the bus type (or this bus type is unknown)
x--x

AFAIK the bug is due to the plugin trying to read temperature of the SD card,
which is not available.
The plugin should catch this error and ignore it silently.
If I insert the card later, once the panel is started, I don't meet such error.

Note: the beginning of the error message is irrelevant to this kind of
error.

release: Ubuntu 8.04.1
package: xfce4-sensors-plugin 0.10.99.4~svn-r3775-2

** Affects: xfce4-sensors-plugin (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

[Bug 139057] Re: Should try given password for next partition

2008-06-07 Thread Florent Xicluna
Hi, i had a similar problem on my laptop:
* I have 2 encrypted partitions: sda5 and sda6:
   /dev/sda5 - swap partition
   /dev/sda6 - mapped to /var (with binding /var/home - /home)
* Both partitions use the same password
* I use uswsusp for hibernate/resume features
* The initramfs step asks me for password at bootup: swap partition only
* Later the init script ask me again for the password of the /var partition

I think it makes sense to decrypt all filesystem in /etc/crypttab at the
initramfs step.
Here is the patch I have tested on my laptop:
* it decrypts all /etc/crypttab partitions at initramfs stage
* it tries to unlock with same password all partitions.
* it works both with usplash and with console bootup

After doing the changes, execute sudo update-initramfs -u

[Bug 110970] Re: When mounting encrypted drives the password should be asked for graphically and not in text mode

2008-06-07 Thread Florent Xicluna
same problem: swap unlocked graphically, while other partition (/var)
unlocked in text mode.

I resolved the issue by forcing initramfs to decrypt all partitions in a
row.

See the new patch attached on bug #139057.

[Bug 176562] Re: Config fails in low memory machine (64MB)

2008-06-07 Thread Florent Xicluna
@Tim
Thank you for the update for Intrepid.
However I think it is not a bad idea to make it available for Hardy LTS.
Regarding the minimal requirement we may consider updating the documentation:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements

Incidentally, I create a blueprint to request better support for low memory
systems.
See Related blueprints in the sidebar.
