[Bug 1891165] Re: gsettings-desktop-schemas : Breaks: mutter (< 3.31.4) but 3.28.4-0ubuntu18.04.2 is to be installed
To be clear, I have since successfully upgraded but done so by: 0. (running apt-get update, dist-upgrade, etc to prepare) 1. deinstalling (via apt-get) gdm3 2. booting into recovery mode & initiating networking 3. running do-release-upgrade 4. restarting the system. I don't think I can exactly 'recommend' this way of doing it, but for me it was successful. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1891165 Title: gsettings-desktop-schemas : Breaks: mutter (< 3.31.4) but 3.28.4-0ubuntu18.04.2 is to be installed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gsettings-desktop-schemas/+bug/1891165/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 1891361] Re: sshfs crashes entire Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS system
Hi Seth: Thanks for looking into this bug. Re unreliable w/o sshfs: No, 20.04.1 LTS is quite reliable; so far the only crash has been while using sshfs; when I'm not using sshfs, it works fine. Re unbootable: I don't think it has anything to do with grub; the sshfs crash mucks up the boot drive file system, so that I have to fsck it using another computer. But most of the time the boot drive is so mucked up, that fsck can't fix it enough to boot. [Bug 1853216] [NEW] evolution-addressbook-factory fails with slow CardDAV server
Public bug reported: I'm trying to use Evolution to access a 6000-vcard collection on a slow CardDAV server. Evolution (actually the backend 'evolution-addressbook-factory') fails to read the contents of an address book stored on this slow CardDAV server. The message is "Socket I/O timed out" (after ~90 seconds). I can reliable synchronize my Android devices with this server, so the CardDAV server is working just fine. I can also access this slow CardDAV server using the Linux "cadaver" program, and just listing all 6000 cards requires about *180 seconds*. Clearly, any timeout of 180 seconds or less built into Evolution won't allow this CardDAV server to operate properly. So the problem is with Evolution. The evolution-addressbook-factory program queries this CardDAV server for a list of *all* of the contacts (i.e., all 6000 of them), which takes the server 180 seconds to return. Somewhere in the evolution-addressbook-factory code, there is a *hard- coded* timeout of something like 90 seconds. Either this hard-coded timeout should be increased to something like 5 minutes, or an option needs to be included for defining slow servers. Note that due to standard CardDAV protocols, there doesn't appear to be any way to avoid requesting and accepting the *entire list* of address cards. This is because, while evolution-addressbook-factory synchronizes at most 100 cards at a time, evolution needs to know each card's resource name (file name) when requesting a batch of 100, and the only way to do that is with a PROPFIND on the entire collection. I have tested Evolution on both x86 and x64 versions, and they both fail in exactly the same way, so the problem isn't machine-specific. [Bug 1710307] [NEW] 17.04 doesn't install properly on SD card slot
Public bug reported: Used standard ISO; standard install procedure; SD card in /dev/mmcblk0 Installed just fine, but won't boot. It turns out that this HP Envy refuses to boot from SD card slot, so I put SD card in card reader on /dev/sdb. Problem is: Ubuntu boot process is still looking for /dev/mmcblk0p1 !! Why in the world is Ubuntu looking for /dev/mmcblk0 when the SD card is being booted from /dev/sdb ? S, I re-installed Ubuntu ISO onto SD card while in /dev/sdc. That worked fine, even though it booted on /dev/sdb. But it *should* have worked when Ubuntu was installed onto this same card when it was plugged into the /dev/mmcblk0 slot. For the record, the /dev/mmcblk0 slot is much faster than the USB SD card reader, so installing Ubuntu onto this SD card while plugged into this SD card slot is much faster, and should be preferred. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: boot card envy hp problems sd slot -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1710307 Title: 17.04 doesn't install properly on SD card slot To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1710307/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1550730] [NEW] Xorg crash
Public bug reported: X11 crashes during booting on kernel 4.2.0-30 (the version dated Feb 26, 2016 -- version 36 ???) This bug report is being submitted on 4.2.0-27 since I can't get 4.2.0-30 to run. This is the *second* version of 4.2.0-30 that doesn't boot; the first version was earlier in the week. Re: [Bug 1467274] Re: [HP Pavilion dv7-4272us] Display glitches occur
Success!! I simply removed /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.so completely, so X was forced to use a standard frame buffer. Sound no longer worked, but by removing alsa-base & pulseaudio & reinstalling, I got sound back again. So now I can play videos w/o using the GPU at all! Wooppeee! Re: [Bug 1467274] Re: [HP Pavilion dv7-4272us] Display glitches occur
The video glitches only happen when the GPU switches between the GPU on and the GPU off. Otherwise, the display is solid, both when the GPU is enabled, and when it is disabled. Other symptoms: The GPU turns on and off every 3 seconds or so when the system first starts up. However, after the CPU's reach a certain temperature -- ~60 Celsius -- the GPU then seems to stay off (more-or-less). But if I start up VLC, VLC seems to try to turn the GPU on, and the whole cycle starts again. I have tried to disable "hardware decoding" in VLC, but apparently that is harder than it looks. I tried removing all of the VDPAU libraries, in hopes that VLC wouldn't be able to fiddle with the GPU. However, that didn't help. (It didn't hurt, either.) Something in the DRI module seems to want to keep the GPU turned on, and I want to keep it turned off. Please, please, tell me how to disable the GPU completely! Thanks. Re: [Bug 1509135] Re: Discrete Radeon graphics unit won't stay *off*
Hi Christopher: OK, I have some additional information. 1. I finally figured out a way to kill the Radeon HDMI audio: echo 1 > /sys/bus/pci/devices/:02:00.1/remove If I do this after I log into Ubuntu, the Radeon HDMI option is gone, and won't return until I reboot. The other audio devices -- e.g., the analog headphone jack -- continues to work just fine. However, I have not been able to figure out how to kill this HDMI audio device early in the boot sequence, so that the HDMI audio is *never* enabled. Unfortunately, trying to do the same thing with PCI 02:00.0 device -- i.e., the Radeon "DIS" discrete graphics card -- doesn't work; I have to reboot the entire system. 2. The latest (vmlinuz-4.3.0-040300) works the same as the 15.10 kernel; no better, no worse -- at least as far as the Radeon graphics is concerned. Symptoms: the Radeon discrete graphics unit (DIS) unit keeps turning off and on every 5 seconds or so. I used to think that it was the HDMI audio that was somehow triggering this, but now that I learned how to turn the HDMI audio off (see above), I can see that this is not the case. 3. There may be some interaction with the VLC video player. Even though I've told VLC to not use any hardware (i.e., GPU) acceleration, VLC may still be trying to turn on the DIS discrete graphics unit. I haven't been able to find any documentation about how to keep VLC from trying to turn on the DIS graphics unit. I'm open to other suggestions about how to keep the DIS unit turned off. BTW, for some reason, the older (non-DPM) mode for this Radeon graphics unit no longer works correctly. The following command: cat /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch tells me that the power state of DIS is "DynOff", even when I boot the machine with radeon.dpm=0. It shouldn't say "DynOff"; it should simply say "Off". 4. I did notice one small change from the previous kernel. I have "xsensors" installed, which reports the temperature of the Radeo graphics unit. In the latest 4.3.0-040300 kernel, when the DIS is "DynOff", the temperature is reported as "0 degrees C". It now reports the temperature only when DIS is on -- e.g., "DynPwr". Henry Baker Santa Barbara, CA At 03:07 AM 10/28/2015, Christopher M. Re: [Bug 1509135] Re: Discrete Radeon graphics unit won't stay *off*
Will do, but not for a few more days. I'm working on something with a deadline. Thx for helping with this; there's no reason why radeon.dpm=0 and radeon.dpm=1 shouldn't *both* work, although somewhat differently. Hi Christopher: I ran apport-collect for you, as described in your message below. I've tried a number of things to turn the discrete Radeon unit off. I'm currently trying to use "radeon.dpm=0" in the kernel, followed by echo profile > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_method echo profile > /sys/class/drm/card1/device/power_method echo low > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile echo low > /sys/class/drm/card1/device/power_profile echo IGD > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch echo OFF > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch Previously, I've tried "radeon.dpm=1" in the kernel, followed by echo battery > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_dpm_state echo battery > /sys/class/drm/card1/device/power_dpm_state I'm willing to try other combinations if can suggest some. Thanks for your help. Henry Baker Santa Barbara, CA At 03:14 PM 10/25/2015, Christopher M. [Bug 1509135] [NEW] Discrete Radeon graphics unit won't stay *off*
Public bug reported: Until today I was running Ubuntu 15.04, and finally got to the point where I could run my HP computer with the Radeon discrete graphics disabled/*turned off* -- even when watching video with the VLC video player. However, after upgrading to Ubuntu 15.10 today, the Radeon discrete graphics keeps coming on, even though I'm trying to force it to stay in the "PX asic powered off" state. There are several problems with the Radeon discrete graphics: * when it comes on & goes off it glitches the display and the Bluetooth mouse and glitches the audio * it cause this laptop to run 10 degrees F hotter. How can I disable the discrete Radeon graphics unit so that it *stays powered off* ? I have already registered several bugs wrt to this problem: * Bug 1466934 * Bug 1467274 * Bug 1466950 Bottom line: I want to *keep the Radeon discrete graphics unit turned off*, and do not wish to use this unit for any "hardware decoding", "hardware rendering", or *anything*. My AMD 3-core CPU is powerful enough to do *software rendering* for anything I want to do, so I don't really need or want the discrete Radeon graphics running on this computer. (I have other computers available should I need HW encoding/decoding/rendering assist.) Re: [Bug 1467274] Re: [HP Pavilion dv7-4272us] Display glitches occur
After turning off radeon.dpm=1, the temperature at idle goes up about 2 degrees C. However, if I then do echo low > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_profile echo low > /sys/class/drm/card1/device/power_profile The temperature at idle goes down about 4 degrees C -- i.e., less than when dpm=1. The k10temp is now about 62.5 degrees C at idle. The acpitz temperature is now about 62.0 degrees C at idle. These temps are still much higher than my little ASUS laptops, which idle at about 50 degrees C, but 62.5 degrees C is still perhaps 10-15 degrees cooler than when running certain apps on the same HP machine in Windows 7. The internal temps of this HP laptop were so high running Windows7 that they compromised the internal hard disk. However, I was able to relocate the internal hard disk to another bay inside the laptop where it was 20 degrees cooler, so I think I've now fixed the disk-frying problem. Re: [Bug 1467274] Re: Xorg radeon.dpm=1 causes glitches
OK, Christopher, below are the results after removing radeon.dpm=1 and radeon.audio=0. Each time this happens, the screen glitches. It seems to be triggered by something in the audio. HDMI audio keeps showing up in the list of audio devices, even when radeon.audio was 0. I also started my Bluetooth A2DP headset, which may have triggered (why, I can't imagine) the switching on & off of the HDMI audio. BTW, the temperature & power consumption _without_ radeon.dpm=1 is almost exactly the same as _with_ radeon.dpm=1. Has dpm=1 become the default? Re: [Bug 1467274] Re: Xorg radeon.dpm=1 causes glitches
Re: "if you remove kernel parameters radeon.dpm=1 radeon.audio=0 are there any visual glitches?" I believe so, but I'll check this again & send you another email. As I mentioned in several bug reports, my goal is to minimize the operating temperature of this laptop, which tends to run hot even in Windows 7. The good news is that Ubuntu 15.05 runs less hot than Win7 under exactly the same workload -- playing the same videos with VLC. Interestingly, the DIS GPU takes a lot more power to display hidef H264 video than does the CPU, so the lowest power way to play videos is to keep the DIS GPU completely turned off, and to clamp the operating freq of the triple cores to 800MHz. Thanks to clever programming for h264 decode, there is still enough computing power of 3 cores at 800MHz to display the video. For 1080p, I have to unclamp the cpu frequencies ("ondemand" v "low"), but this raises the operating temperature by only a handful of degrees C. At 07:28 AM 7/4/2015, Christopher M. Re: [Bug 1467274] Re: Xorg radeon.dpm=1 causes glitches
This laptop is HP Pavilion dv7-4272us. I'd be willing to help debug this problem, but I need some tools. The first tool I need is a way to reliably turn off the DIS graphics & keep it off. The second tool would be a way to reliably turn off the IGD graphics & keep it off. Etc. When things keep switching back & forth for no apparent reason, I can't debug the situation. I did some Google searching, and it appears that there may be a way to disable certain PCI addresses during boot, which may be the only way to control this behavior. Thx for any help. [Bug 1467274] [NEW] Xorg radeon.dpm=1 causes glitches
Public bug reported: Setting radeon.dpm=1 keeps causing glitches every time the display changes from the IGD to DIS and vice versa. It may be related to the HDMI audio, which I tried to turn off using radeon.audio=0. Below are the lines from the kernel log having to do with snd_hda_intel (which shouldn't be there when radeon.audio=0). I'm trying to _keep the DIS GPU *turned off* in order to save power & keep this laptop cool_. I can't tell who keeps turning the DIS GPU back on, but I'd love to know how to keep the DIS GPU locked OFF. [Bug 1466950] [NEW] drm complains bitterly when discrete graphics turned off
Public bug reported: I'm using radeon.dpm=0 and radeon.runpm=0 for reasons explained in a previous bug report. I'm able to turn the radeon discrete graphics off using echo IGD > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch echo OFF > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch and my power consumption drops dramatically to a nice low level, but then the kernel log starts filling up with all sorts of complaints from drm: Jun 19 10:19:43 HP-ubuntu kernel: [ 360.548772] radeon: switched off Jun 19 10:19:44 HP-ubuntu kernel: [ 361.083818] radeon :02:00.0: couldn't schedule ib Jun 19 10:19:44 HP-ubuntu kernel: [ 361.083872] [drm:radeon_cs_ioctl [radeon]] *ERROR* Failed to schedule IB ! The whole point of the exercise is to keep the discrete graphics off, so why is drm:radeon_cs_ioctl still trying to issue commands to it? [Bug 1466934] [NEW] Trying to maximize battery life on HP dv7-4272us
Public bug reported: This AMD 3-core + Radeon runs really hot, and I'm trying to maximize battery life. When I try radeon.dpm=1, I get display glitching every few seconds when the dpm switches displays. I haven't found any way to force dpm to keep the discrete display completely turned off, both to save power and to stop the glitching. Among other problems, the mere existence of HDMI audio keeps waking up the discrete GPU, both wasting power & glitching the display. So I tried radeon.audio=0. I don't think it helps, but I left it in. The only way to really kill the HDMI audio problems is to blacklist snd_hda_intel, but that kills _all_ of my audio (except Bluetooth audio). So I had to un-blacklist snd_hda_intel. So I'm using radeon.dpm=0. If radeon.runpm=1, I still get problems. So I'm using radeon.runpm=0. This works pretty well; I've gotten the temperature down to 68 degrees or so, but this is still too hot. If I turn off the discrete graphics completely using echo OFF > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch this works quite well -- I can get the temperature down to 64 degrees or so -- but now my log fills up with complaints that my radeon discrete driver isn't turned on. (I'll send you another report showing you this.) I want to be able to operate this HP laptop in the most power-saving way -- by completely turning off the discrete radeon GPU. Could you provide any suggestions about how to do this? Thanks very much. Sorry, here is some more information on my system: Ubuntu server 10.04 LTS x86_64 with 5 SATA disks configured as a hardware raid (3ware 9550) and several encrypted volumes. A simple "dd if=/dev/zero of=/some/volume/1gb.file bs=1G count=1 oflag=direct" causes enough IO for kcryptd to use 100% load and that once in a while freezes the system. [Bug 483593] [NEW] Hibernation does not work
Public bug reported: It is a laptop Samsung R510 with 4GB of memory and almost 9GB on a swap partition, so not a swap file, a real partition. When I say "put the machine in sleep-mode/hibernation", you hear the disk to its thing for about 20 seconds or something like that and then I get an ata exception. There is nothing wrong with my harddisk, since I can write to all the other partitions just fine. When I reboot, I see "system resuming" from my BIOS, and then I select Ubuntu in Grub and everything happens as if I just rebooted, instead of hibernated. I have the swap entry in my fstab. On Ubuntu 7.something hibernation did work, so, someone somewhere has broken it. This is on Karmic, upgraded from Jaunty. [not relevant to bug report] I got the advice of "reinstalling" from the CD, but if that is truly the way Ubuntu advertises to its users to do upgrades, then I guess, it's no more Ubuntu for me. Upgrades should be flawless. The upgrade from Jaunty to Karmic was _far_ from that. Next time, if you release something, please wait until it is done. For proof: look at the release notes list. If you don't think that list is WAY too long, then we have a different idea about quality software. Nothing on that list couldn't have been fixed. I don't mind "waiting" for an upgrade an extra year, but if I get an upgrade, I want it to become better, not worse.
