Kubuntu 8.04 comes with OpenOffice.org 2.4 and that version doesn't support the new Office's format (OpenXML). OpenOffice.org 3 will come with that support for both files .docx and .xlsx and some others files type, if you want You can download Microsoft OpenXML support for OpenOffice.org by adding a patch: In the attchment there is odf_filter.tar.bz2, unzip it and get into the directory, then type in the terminal: sudo cp OdfConverter /usr/lib/openoffice/program/ (without commas), then type: sudo cp MOOXFilter_cpp.xcu usr/lib/openoffice/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice/TypeDetection/Filter/ (without commas) and finally type: sudo cp MOOXTypeDetection.xcu /usr/lib/openoffice/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice/TypeDetection/Types/ Also You can install OpenOffice.org 3 in your Ubuntu and OpenXML will works out-the-box so this isn't a bug. This isn't a bug, is just a feature that OpenOffice.org 2.4 don't included in its release.
