[Bug 1964713] Re: Can't boot anymore with 5.15.0-22

2022-03-13 Thread Franck
Well, the problem was probably not tied to linux-iamge, as I could
recover a fully functional system with Zsys, going 3 days back. And in
this state, my kernel is 5.15.0-22-generic...

So the origin of the problem was something else... don't konw what.

Closing the report.

[Bug 1964713] [NEW] Can't boot anymore with 5.15.0-22

2022-03-13 Thread Franck
Public bug reported:

upgrade from 5.15.0-17 to 5.15.0-22 seems to have broken my system.
After showing the splash screen, screen does black and system is stuck
(need to hard reboot).

From grub, going back to 5.15.0-17 recovery mode allows to boot.
5.15.0-22 recovery mode freezes on initramfs loading.

Hardware is a Tuxedo Infinitybook Prod 14 Gen 6, with Iris xe graphics.

Not sure how to debug this...

Hey Paride, sorry for the late reply (crazy day :D).
I am having difficulties to use your PPA:

E: The repository 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/paride/sssd-lp1958392/ubuntu
focal Release' does not have a Release file.

Is this because focal is missing from the list of supported Ubuntu
versions ?

I asked the SSSD team if there was anything else I could do to help them
but they seem to have all information they need
https://github.com/SSSD/sssd/issues/5959#issuecomment-1020237062

Still happy to test your ppa though :)

[Bug 1958391] [NEW] SSSD internal DNS resolver is broken when using Cisco Anyconnect VPN client

2022-01-19 Thread Franck Iaropoli
Public bug reported:

Hi everyone,
I am facing an issue with SSSD internal DNS resolver (I was able to reproduce
this issue with SSSD versions 2.2.3 coming with Ubuntu 20.04 and version 1.16.1
coming with Ubuntu 18.04) when I am using Cisco Anyconnect VPN client.
SSSD is not detecting the new DNS servers setting up by Cisco Anyconnect client
and keeps using previous ones.
DNS is managed with systemd-resolved and the /etc/resolv.conf file is a symlink
to /run/systemd/resolve/resolv.conf file (I am not using the internal DNS stub
resolver).
When Cisco Anyconnect client connects to VPN the /etc/resolv.conf symlink is
renamed to /etc/resolv.conf.vpnbackup and a regular file /etc/resolve.conf is
created with DNS servers to use while on VPN.
When Cisco Anyconnect client disconnects from VPN the
/etc/resolv.conf.vpnbackup is moved back to /etc/resolv.conf.
I have checked this with inotifywait (I only kept interesting parts):

/etc/ MOVED_FROM resolv.conf
/etc/ MOVED_TO resolv.conf.vpnbackup
/etc/ CREATE resolv.conf
/etc/ OPEN resolv.conf
/etc/ ATTRIB resolv.conf
/etc/ MODIFY resolv.conf
/etc/ CLOSE_WRITE,CLOSE resolv.conf
...
/etc/ MOVED_FROM resolv.conf.vpnbackup
/etc/ MOVED_TO resolv.conf

I can workaround this issue by changing the way SSSD detects DNS changes
(stop using inotify and poll the /etc/resolv.conf file every 5 seconds)
with option try_inotify set to false but I guess this can impact
performance (even though I don't think this should be a big impact).

The SSSD team told me that my issue is the same issue as this one
https://github.com/SSSD/sssd/issues/1031
Newer SSSD versions have already been fixed.

Will it be possible to backport: patches
- https://github.com/SSSD/sssd/commit/0c5711f9bae1cb46d4cd3fbe5d86d8688087be13
to version 2.2.3 (Ubuntu 20.04)
to version 1.16.1 (Ubuntu 18.04)

Thanks for your help :)

[Bug 1810183] Re: numpad on touchpad doesn't work in ASUS Zenbook 14

2021-05-07 Thread CAPDEVILLE Franck
Some news:I have at least tried to reinstall Linuxmint 20.1 on an ASUS Zenbook
14 UX425J and this time, I succeeded with the problem of the Numpad in the
touchpad : it works very well with the F8 touch ( not with the specific zone in
the upper right corner or the touchpad, but no matter).
Thanks to everyone who helped me, you are great ! I am very happy and the owner
or the PC too. One more convinced user of Linux but she needed absolutely this
Numpad for his job.

@ Erik: which file " install.sh" have you exactly used on an ASUS UX425J? Have

It seems to me that I missed something before I launched " install.sh" a few

[Bug 1810183] Re: numpad on touchpad doesn't work in ASUS Zenbook 14

2021-04-16 Thread CAPDEVILLE Franck
I have tried five days ago to install the function of the Numpad on an ASUS
Zenbook 14 UX425J and I haven't succeeded. When I launch the script
"install.sh" the script doesn't find the device (the Numpad I suppose?). But I
haven't well understood if it's necessary to modify the script for my model of
laptop or, if the script is good for any supported models?
And, endeed, I don't know if I have take the last script.
Could you give me again the good links for the script if it's good for an
UX4525J?
Thank you in advance,
Ragards,

Franck

[Bug 1901567] Re: bwrap: setting up uid map: Permission denied (with Apparmor)

2020-10-26 Thread Franck
Also notice that setting apparmor in complain mode for usr.bin.evolution
is not enough to get it working. You have to disable the profile...

[Bug 1901567] [NEW] bwrap: setting up uid map: Permission denied (with Apparmor)

2020-10-26 Thread Franck
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from Ubuntu 20.04 to 20.10, evolution is unable to
display my mails.

Launching from a shell, I get this error message: "bwrap: setting up uid
map: Permission denied"

Also, double clicking on a mail shows: "Something has gone wrong when
displaying the message
A WebKitWebProcess crashed when displaying the message. You can try again by
moving to another message and back. If the issue persists, please file a bug
report in GNOME Gitlab."

I found this Archlinux thread
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=259928 regarding the problem.
A workaround is proposed, that consists in exporting
WEBKIT_FORCE_SANDBOX=0 before running Evolution. This works.

Notice I have Apparmor enforced. Disableing Apparomor for
usr.bin.evolution also works around the problem.

Both are not required, either one is sufficient. I guess a modification
in apparmor profile is necessary, but I'm not sure I can figure out out
to do that...

If you use nvidia graphic card , you won't have wayland choice :( except if you
install ubuntu without the option proprietary software.

I'm using ubuntu gnomeshell 20.04, and libreoffice everyday during several
hours a day.
No way to copy/paste without problem.
Especially in writer using the math module.

It seems the ubuntu mate doesn't reproduce the problem.

Yes I'm positive: gufw works here on my Wayland session.

$ loginctl show-session $(awk '/tty/ {print $1}' <(loginctl)) -p Type | awk -F=
'{print $2}'
wayland

Gufw asks nicely for my sudo password and UI starts as expected.

[Bug 1835649] Re: Nautilus utterly unreliable with drag & drop

I've bben looking for similar issues on the net.
This one is unresolved but report
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1229018
a comment describes what I see quite well regarding the error message:

"- when a drop fails in Nautilus and I use cut/paste to move a file or
folder, I then get a "can't access [source folder]" dialog box a long
time later (like 1 or 2 minutes, which is an eternity in UX terms) as if
the mouse-based drag-and-drop got stuck all that time."

[Bug 1835649] [NEW] Nautilus utterly unreliable with drag & drop

2019-07-07 Thread Franck
Public bug reported:

When using nautilus to drag & drop files between folders, it quickly
becomes unresponsive and unreliable.

Giving a constant pattern to reproduce is hard, but playing a few tens of
seconds with files and folders always triggers the weird behaviour.
This happens in a single nautilus window, or when using several (2) nautilus
windows.
Sometimes, I get an error message saying my file does not exists anymore.

The problem is with D&D, as Using Ctrl+X / Ctrl+V always works.
Notice I'm using a Wayland session, it might be related...

Not sure how to collect useful informations to debug this, advices are
welcome...

[Bug 1824408] [NEW] With client side decoration, Firefox preempts any middle click on title bar

2019-04-11 Thread Franck
Public bug reported:

Since recent versions, Firefox uses client-side decoration to draw its title
bar.
I have a mouse shortcut defined in gnome-tweaks that allows me to minimize
windows on middle mouse button click on title bar
This works well, except on new Firefox, where it will open a new tab...

I didn't find the way to disable this behaviour.

[Bug 1817338] Re: HDMI sound output not available

2019-03-05 Thread Franck
Ok, trying to rephrase the problem :-)

I have a laptop (Thinkpad T430s) hooked on a dock, then an HDMI monitor
with embedded speakers (Asus MX27AQ) on the dock.

Before upgrading to 19.04 ongoing release, I was able to choose HDMI
speaker as sound output, from the sound setting in Gnome shell.

Now, I can't get sound on the monitor anymore, only laptop speakers are
working.

If I choose the HDMI/Displayport option in the gnome sound settings, it wont
change anything.
When this option is selected, if I click on the test button, it will display a
window with "click a speaker to test", but NO speaket to choose from (only the
"user" icon).

Hopes this is helpful to define the bug more accuratly...

[Bug 1817338] [NEW] HDMI sound output not available

2019-02-22 Thread Franck
Public bug reported:

In 19.04, HDMI sound stopped working after some upgrade.

The sink is somehow availalbe, but cannot be selected.
In gnome-control-center, HDMI output device is listed, but if I choose it, no
configuration list appears (see screen capture attached).

aplay -l gives me:
~$ aplay -l

[Bug 1713313] Re: Unable to launch pkexec'ed applications on Wayland session

2018-08-10 Thread Franck
@aquina I was just pointing ufw vs firewalld as it is the app (gufw)
that drove me here. I also wanted to point out that by adopting Gnome /
Systemd / Wayland / ... Ubuntu is now dependant and has to keep up with
the new upstream, that tends to be RedHat / Fedora.

[Bug 1713313] Re: Unable to launch pkexec'ed applications on Wayland session

2018-08-09 Thread Franck
Are there any plans to move forward and try to coordinate applications
rewrite/adaptation ?
I'm not in love with wayland, but isolating graphical applications for each
other seems a legitimate concern (see
https://theinvisiblethings.blogspot.com/2011/04/linux-security-circus-on-gui-isolation.html
 for example).

Now that Ubuntu has given up on Wayland by default, I'm afraid there is
now less incentive for transitioning to the security model wayland wants
to impose. So what? Should we use firewalld instead of ufw?

main_dir / file2

2) select file1 and file2, and drag them onto dir1 (nautilus goes into
dir1) then dir2.

3) nautilus is lost : files are not copied. Placeholders don't
disappear. Eventually, nautilus will crash after playing with these
files for a while.

[Bug 1512027] Re: open of device pixma:MX7600_... failed: invalid argument

2018-03-21 Thread Franck
Using 18.04 (wip), I had the same problem with a Brother J4625DW all in
one printer/scanner. Installing the driver from Brother
(http://support.brother.com/g/s/id/linux/en/instruction_scn1b.html?c=us_ot&lang=en&redirect=on)
instead of the brother driver from the repos solved the problem, so it
might be a workaround for those using Brother scanners.

[Bug 1690085] Re: Ryzen 1800X freeze - rcu_sched detected stalls on CPUs/tasks

2017-12-06 Thread Franck Charras
It could be something else then ? After applying the fix on several
machines, I have no freezes to report, more than 1 month of uptime, it
looks rock stable. Did you also disable ASLR ? Also I compiled a kernel
from git.kernel.org as suggested in the tutorial, not Ubuntu Kernel.

No "processor.max_cstate=1" is not necessary. I'd also suggest to double
check that your motherboard bios is up to date. If it persists I'd try
with a more recent kernel (I'm using 13.6) because IIRC the rcu options
where a little bit different in earlier versions of 4.13.

YES the boot option alone has no effect, you must also compile the
kernel with CONFIG_RCU_NOCB_CPU. You should be fine now (I have this
confirmed on several different configs). Here's a tutorial:

2017-10-17 Thread Franck Charras
Hi,
I'm getting the same issues on several identical builds, with an ASUS prime
X370-PRO motherboard.
It's very hard to analyze since it happens randomly every other week, and it
leaves no logs. It seems that the freeze happens at idle after very high memory
load (observation after logging CPU and RAM loads).
Compiling the kernel as suggested in this thread didn't work (new freeze this
morning).

[Bug 1716160] Re: System goes to sleep with lid closed after login

2017-09-11 Thread Franck
Thanks @Daniel for the workaround, it does the trick.

Notice however, as I'm not sure I was clear enough, that the lid is
already closed when the session begins, it's not an event that happens
while the session has began.

Also notice it is a regression regarding the behaviour of Unity 7...

[Bug 1716160] [NEW] System goes to sleep with lid closed after login

2017-09-09 Thread Franck
Public bug reported:

Using a laptop with lid closed and an external monitor, you can boot.
Bios will show on the external monitor, as well as gdm when boot is finished.
You can then choose a user and type in your password, which is accepted.
But then, system goes to sleep (as the lid is cloesd I guess).

Going out of sleep with the power button shows the gnome shell.

[Bug 1716159] [NEW] gdm greeter does not allow euro character (€) when typing password

2017-09-09 Thread Franck
Public bug reported:

In latest Artful (2017-09-08 daily), gdm does not allow to enter the
euro character (€) when typing the password (be it with the real
keyboard or with the visual on screen keyboard).

Steps to reproduce:
1. on the gdm login screen, try to type € in the password field
2. the input is ignored (not big dot is added)
3. if your password contains a € symbol (which is allowed, incliding during
installation with ubiquity), you cannot login anymore...

[Bug 1716149] [NEW] Test zone in keymap selection window does not take selected keymap into account

2017-09-09 Thread Franck
Public bug reported:

In latest Artuflul (2017-09-08 daily), when choosing keymap, the test
zone does not adapt to the currently highlighted keymap, defeating its
purpose.

Steps to reproduce:
1. begin installation
2. on keymap setting screen, chose French Azerty
3. type on the key with a A
4. you get a 'q' as querty is still used

If you accept the choice and come back from the next screen, then the
test zone works...

[Bug 1664138] Re: soffice.bin crashed with SIGSEGV in ResMgr::GetLong()

2017-02-17 Thread Franck
Here is what happens here:

- make sure there is no .config/libreoffice/
- run libreoffice (without a file): welcome screen opens and proposes to open a
file or create a new one
- open any file / or create anew file: libreoffice crashes
- then, libreoffice won't open anymore until I remove .config/libreoffice/

Obviously makes LO unusable :-)

[Bug 1628956] Re: From v49.0, Firefox needs read access to @{PROC}/net/arp

2016-10-18 Thread Franck
Motivation for this new requirement is:

## Why

Each particular network your computer and browser run in has its own set of
network conditions, routers, proxies and MITM situations.

Changing between networks also changes proxies. Intercepting or explicit,
willing or unwilling, HTTP or even HTTPS with custom installed trust-roots.
This makes the web content cache, the cookie store and others to save
contents from one network that is potentially different than what is received
over other networks. It can lead to content pollution and information leaks,
on purpose by malicious actors or just by mistake.

[Bug 1628956] [NEW] From v49.0, Firefox needs read access to @{PROC}/net/arp

2016-09-29 Thread Franck
Public bug reported:

Since the latest upgrade of Firefox to 49.0, it will need read access to
@{PROC}/net/arp

I don't know what the security implications are, so I don't know if we
want to give read access to explicitely deny it. Both seem to work.

[Bug 109434] Re: Installing a server for a game automatically auto-inits and runs every boot.

2016-08-23 Thread Franck
On Ubuntu 16.04, I was hit by the unexpected (by me) behaviour of
wesnoth-server, and noticed it just now (after probably 6 month running
the server on each boot. My first idea was to go to
/etc/default/wesntoh, looking for a ENABLE=1, but there is none.

So I think that:
- the fact that the server will run on each boot should be much more obvious on
installation
- there should be simple way to disable it (something like /etc/default/wesnoth)

I support the view that installing a game server is most of the time for
playing a network game occasionally, and running a permanent game server
is probably a less frequent use case (which might require explicitly
enabling the server on boot)

(notice this bug was opened... 8 years ago)

2016-08-23 Thread Franck
Also notice that the startup script is not up to date, so systemd fails
to disable it:

$ sudo systemctl disable wesnoth-1.12-server.service
Synchronizing state of wesnoth-1.12-server.service with SysV init with
/lib/systemd/systemd-sysv-install...
Executing /lib/systemd/systemd-sysv-install disable wesnoth-1.12-server
update-rc.d: error: wesnoth-1.12-server Default-Start contains no runlevels,
aborting.

[Bug 1566944] [NEW] dnsmasq profile prevents LDX container to launch

2016-04-06 Thread Franck
Public bug reported:

LXD 2.0 has dropped lxcbr0 for lxdbr0 as its default bridge configuration.
Since then, having usr.sbin.dnsmasq profile in enforce mode will prevent LXD
containers to launch:

Apr 6 12:55:06 franck-ThinkPad-T430s kernel: [ 7029.101587] audit: type=1400
audit(1459940106.552:107): apparmor="DENIED" operation="mknod"

pid=22292 comm="dnsmasq" requested_mask="c" denied_mask="c" fsuid=0 ouid=0

Of course, switching to complain mode works the problem around, but
maybe allowing write to /var/lib/lxd-bridge/ would be a good idea
(disclaimer: I'm not a security expert).

[Bug 1566944] Re: dnsmasq profile prevents LDX container to launch

2016-04-06 Thread Franck
In the initial bug report against LXD, S. Graber suggests that maybe
"The apparmor dnsmasq profile should only apply to the system wide
daemon (/etc/init.d/dnsmasq) and not to other daemons".

Not sure what to think about it...

[Bug 1552764] Re: Eclipse and SWT are very slow/hang on a fresh 16.04 install (gtk3/swt issue)

2016-03-29 Thread Franck
This is definitely a problem with SWT and the version of GTK3 that ships with
16.04.
the problem also arises with for example Gantproject
(https://www.ganttproject.biz/download) or Digdash Studio (proprietary BI tool).

Exporting SWT_GTK3=0 works around the issue, but most SWT applications
