[Bug 1792651] [NEW] xWayland & gnome-shell segfaults in Wayland when display is turned off while Kodi running

2018-09-14 Thread Frank Feuerbacher
Public bug reported:

I have been trying to report this problem through bug 1789962, but with
little luck (.crash files were not uploaded). Now I tried reporting
against xwayland instead of gnome-shell. I also installed more .dbg
packages for xwayland, wayland, kodi and gnome-shell.

So far, it looks like the crash data was not uploaded for this bug
either. I don't see it at
https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/39229ebea988d6578bed98d7e18bd96fd9cd523cf89495ed70d4ce4c0f8b7937667368f389be8d8b2588bafc31d1935109305b4abf52dbb724a7cf43c3b425b4.

Sigh

I have opened a bug against apport to report it.

[Bug 1792643] [NEW] apport does not upload wayland or gnome-shell crash data

2018-09-14 Thread Frank Feuerbacher
Public bug reported:

 uname -a

Linux smeagol 4.15.0-34-generic #37-Ubuntu SMP Mon Aug 27 15:21:48 UTC
2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

 lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
Release:18.04

In trying to upload .crash data for bug 1789962 "gnome-shell segfaults
in Wayland when display is turned off while Kodi running" I determined
that apport-cli and friends were never able to upload the .crash files.
The URL where they should appear is:
https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/39229ebea988d6578bed98d7e18bd96fd9cd523cf89495ed70d4ce4c0f8b7937667368f389be8d8b2588bafc31d1935109305b4abf52dbb724a7cf43c3b425b4

Earlier, I did upload the .crash files directly and was told by the
defect reviewer that:

_usr_bin_Xwayland.1000.crash: Stack trace mostly unreadable (missing symbols)
_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.crash: Stack trace is missing

You can see the other bug for details, here is the last comment that I added
(so far):

I deleted all entries in /var/crash and /var/lib/whoopsie.
I recreated the problem

No entries since 08/11. None for wayland, gnome-shell or Kodi.
I checked for over 5 minutes.

So perhaps something is going bad on my end, but I just don't know what

[Bug 1789962] Re: gnome-shell segfaults in Wayland when display is turned off while Kodi running

2018-09-13 Thread Frank Feuerbacher
There appears to be no way to report a Wayland / gnome-shell crash. I
can create the .crash files, but they are never uploaded. I have spent
over 8 hours trying to do this but none of the suggestions have worked.
I think the bug reporting tools are broken for Wayland, but I am tired
of fighting it.

2018-09-13 Thread Frank Feuerbacher
I give up. I have spent over 8 hours trying to report bug 1789962.
Nothing suggested works. I can create the .crash files, see a traceback,
etc. but it is never uploaded. I think that the bug reporting tools
don't take wayland into account and silently barf. If Ubuntu ever
decides to fix these problems, then I'll go back to being a good
citizen.

The first choice: Display, assumes X.org is the only option. This is not true

[Bug 1789962] Re: gnome-shell segfaults in Wayland when display is turned off while Kodi running

2018-09-07 Thread Frank Feuerbacher
I'm not sure if it worked or not, but here is what I did to try to
upload .crash

apport-cli -f
It asked what type of problem, I selected "1: Display (X.org)", which isn't
quite right since this is for Wayland, but there was not a better answer.
When asked what kind of display problem I had, I replied "3: Crashes..."
It told me to produce a backtrace for Xorg, which it is not, so I didn't do
anything about it.
It then asked me if I wanted to send Logs, I replied "Yes", then it displayed:
cat: /var/log/lightdm/x-0-greeter.log: No such file or directory
cat: /var/log/lightdm/x-0-greeter.log.old: No such file or directory

which makes sense since I am not using lightdm, nor Xorg.

It then created a bug with URL:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+filebug/b36d5466-b29b-
11e8-a96e-68b5996a96c8?field.title=Xorg+crash

---

I wasn't sure if the above worked, so I tried to specify the package
that failed:

aport-cli -f -p gnome-shell
It created bug 1791297
It returned with:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+filebug/9774f93e-b29c-11e8-9660-d485646cd9a4?

-
Note that I have crash logs for gnome-shell, Xwayland and kodi-wayland. I don't
know if you need them, but I suspect that it did not upload them all.

Running ubuntu-bug under Xorg gnome-shell exits very quickly. But still no
evidence that crash data was uploaded. Do I have to delete the .upload file and
rerun?

[Bug 1789962] Re: gnome-shell segfaults in Wayland when display is turned off while Kodi running

2018-08-31 Thread Frank Feuerbacher
After much grief, I realized that apport was disabled (I probably did
this in 12.04 days when it would constantly bug me to report something).
I had to do a complete uninstall and reinstall of it. Anyway, it works
now.

ubuntu-bug, however, does not appear to be doing it's thing. I'm running
it under wayland.

First, it seems that I must give full path to crash file. Otherwise it
gives "no such file or directory".

 ubuntu-bug /var/crash/_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.crash
This shows a gui, I press the continue button, it runs a long time and exits.
There is a 0 length /var/crash/_user_bin_gnome-shell-1000.upload file. The RC
from ubuntu-bug is 0. If I go to https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ I don't
see any new entries.

[Bug 1789962] Re: gnome-shell segfaults in Wayland when display is turned off while Kodi running

2018-08-31 Thread Frank Feuerbacher
There was NO crash file. I followed the steps above. They pointed to
documents that said that I needed to install debug symbols.

Anyway, it appears that there is no core file because my core ulimit is
0. This seems to be a side-effect of installing 18.04 on top of 16.04,
but I can't go back to look. Anyway, I have bumped my ulimit by editing
/etc/security/limits.conf. After reproducing problem with core size set
I still don't see anything in /var/crash. Nothing recent from
https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/.

I'm still trying to find the core file.

Had to manually get debug symbols for gnome-shell and libmutter. Not
sure where the crash or core file for gnome-shell goes. If all else
fails I could use strace or watch what files are created...

[Bug 1789962] [NEW] gnome-shell segfaults in Wayland when display is turned off while Kodi running

2018-08-30 Thread Frank Feuerbacher
Public bug reported:

Testing Kodi 18.0-BETA1 Git:20180828-f21b477 on Ubuntu 18.04 running
Wayland gnome-shell. Everything is fine, however, whenever I turn the
display off and leave Kodi running, then gnome-shell segfaults and my
session is killed.

[Bug 1788235] [NEW] lirc broken on 18.04

2018-08-21 Thread Frank Feuerbacher
Public bug reported:

Lirc 0.10.0-2 is never configured after installation. Manually running
"dpkg-reconfigure lirc " also does not do anything. I also noticed that
/usr/share/lirc/remotes is empty, which is where I had my config file
for Ubuntu 16.04.

This was an upgrade install from 16.04.
Searching the web indicates others have this problem. Some have reverted to the
lirc from 16.04. Others recommend using pip3 to install lirc 0.10.10, but I
have been unsuccessful so far.

[Bug 1559576] Re: Ubuntu GNOME boots to black screen when using proprietary Nvidia drivers on a laptop with Optimus

2016-06-25 Thread Frank Feuerbacher
I am seeing the same behavior with a Dell Precision 3420 (Service Tag
318HFB2). No NVIDIA, just i7-6700 HD430, 1 or 2 monitors turned on.

Worked fine using defaualt DM (Unity) then installed gnome-shell and it
broke.

** Description changed:

  Ubuntu 14.10, kernel 3.17.0

I have an HP MCE IR remote receiver that will not work on my ASRock Z97
based system, whether plugged into USB2 or USB3 ports. It is known that
this device did not work in USB3 ports, but with the Z97 it will not
work on either. The symptom is that when you use ir-keytable -t to
display the scan codes for keys pressed, you will get inconsistent codes
  for the same key.

The problem seems to be that Z97 requires xHCI:

Due to the design of the Intel 9 series chipset, all USB devices connected to
the
USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports are controlled by the xHCI controller. Some legacy
USB
devices must update their firmware for better compatibility.

[Bug 1405907] Re: Z97 requires xHCI for USB2: IR remote unusable

2015-01-03 Thread Frank Feuerbacher
When I tried running 'apport-collect 1405907' it complained that since I
was running kernel 3.17, that it wasn't really supported and that I
should file a bug report against kernel.org. I haven't yet completed
that process since it seems incumbant upon me to try the problem against
the latest kernel, which I am a tad reluctant to put onto my machine. I
wanted to first research if any work has been done for z97 or xHCI on
these newer kernels before I go through the risk of installing them on
my machine.

My suspicion, is that no work has been done in this area and that this
bug is valid. USB 2.0 adapters are rapidly disappearing (just try
ordering a USB2 PCIe adapter) meaning that xHCI support of USB1, USB2,
etc. is becoming increasingly important.

[Bug 1219560] Re: Can't pair Logitech K810 using GUI

2013-10-23 Thread Frank Feuerbacher
Same problem with Logitech K760 on 12.10 & 13.04.

Also, I notice that the keyboard randomly looses its connection
(sometimes in one day, sometimes a week, typically every 2-3 days). When
this happens I have to manually delete the keyboard using the gnome-gui
and repeat the steps outlined above and at:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2101785.

In looking for a bug report I found a number of reports on different
versions of Ubuntu. I suspect it has been here for a while and most
people give up trying to use bluetooth for a keyboard.

[Bug 31037] Re: Vino-server takes 90% of cpu when only listening for incoming connections

2013-08-31 Thread Frank Feuerbacher
Using 13.04 on a ION with 4G ram. The network is 1Ghz. If I remote login
to this machine using VNC (Remmina Desktop client) vino-server utilizes
30-40% when I have one simple terminal up with "top" running. If I then
simply move this terminal window the cpu goes to 99%+ for about 10
seconds and returns to 30-40%. Encryption and bit-depth does not seem to
matter.

If I now use VNC from my ION to my 4-cpu i5-3570K @ 3.4Ghz Ubuntu 13.04
vino-server consumes 20-30% (of one of the cpus) when viewing a terminal
running "top". If I perform some other activity, such as type this note
in Firefox, vnc-server jumps to 40%. Typing is sluggish. Moving a
window jumps it to 60% for several seconds. Again, bit-depth, encryption
and quality make little difference.

I am happy to provide any other information that you might ask for.

I will probably be looking for another VNC solution since this baby is
painful to use.

[Bug 1210209] [NEW] 13.04 huge gvfsd-http memory leak using totem

2013-08-08 Thread Frank Feuerbacher
Public bug reported:

On 13.04 with Totem 3.6.3 and gvfs 1.16.1

If I use Totem to view an HD program using the local URL:
http://smeagol:80//mythweb/pl/stream/1843/1375919940 then there is a
long wait while the file is first loaded into gvfsd-http, then it plays.
gvfsd-http process grows to 4.2G (resident since I have 16G ram). If I
exit Totem, gvfsd-http is still using 4.2G. If I reopen Totem and play
the same file, there is again a considerable wait and the memory size
doubles to 8.4G for a short period of time, but then drops back down to
4.2G as the video starts playing. Needless to say the CPU and I/O are
throttled during the caching. If I am stupid enough to play a two hour
HD movie then I seen my Virt memory hit 17.5G and my resident memory hit
12G. The machine is very sluggish at this point because it is paging
5.5G. Of course stopping Totem does not free up the memory.

I can work around the problem by killing the gvfsd-http process. I can
also use VLC instead of Totem.

** Affects: gstreamer0.10 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
