Although above the fix is released in 5.8.0-20.21, today I upgraded to
Groovy, 5.8.0-22-generic #23-Ubuntu and still have no working touchpad.

Using the patched kernel from Kai on Focal did fix the issue. Any idea
why the touchpad is no longer working?

A few notes for this PPA:

1. it is not intended for landing new proposed releases into Ubuntu archive,
2. it's not related to the official packages in the Ubuntu archive in any way,
3. it is only for experiments during hardware enablement,

Hello! Yes, I do have the Sophos Antivirus software installed. However,
your commands failed to work on my machine. Previously, I had done the
same with a different command.

sudo systemctl stop sav-protect.service

This usually does the trick (stops the antivirus), then I proceeded to
your code of...

sudo apt-get install -f

...which did nothing.

I did try to update the linux image/kernel again... And these new
packages were installed...

[Bug 1882194] [NEW] Latest Kernel WiFi Bug

2020-06-05 Thread Frederick Pina
Public bug reported:

Hello. I previously tried to manually update the kernel via Terminal and
ran into a series of errors from the apt which refused to fully install
the kernet update. After several unsuccessful attempt through various
other Terminal means, the update seemed to be accepted; but after
rebooting my machine; the Intel WiFi drivers collapsed and I no longer
could connect to the internet. After reinstalling previously saved Intel
drivers from my Trash bin, I managed to get the Bluetooth to work, and
then I used the UBS tethering feature of my startphone to connect this
machine to the Internet, which till this moment; is my only method of
going online.

I consulted with a professioanl web-developer from Europe, whom
confirmed this bug and suggested I report it; which I am now doing.

Thanks to the kernel developers for all your hard work. You're such
appreciated!

;-)

I'm also using SOGo 3.2.10 on Bionic and I can confirm rebuilding the
package fixes this issue. Any chance we can release a new build in the
official repository as well?

[Bug 874608] Re: milter-greylist geoip support

2020-01-30 Thread Frederick Zhang
It seems that this has already been addressed. I'm using
4.5.11-1.1build2 and it's configured with --with-libGeoIP=/usr.

To enable this feature, install a GeoIP database, e.g. geoip-database-
extra, and then add

> geoipdb "/usr/share/GeoIP/GeoIPCity.dat"

...to /etc/milter-greylist/greylist.conf

[Bug 1860407] [NEW] milter-greylist fails to restart after issuing 'systemctl restart milter-greylist.service'

2020-01-21 Thread Frederick Zhang
Public bug reported:

It seems that when issuing 'systemctl restart milter-greylist.service',
it tries to start the new instance before the old one is completely
gone.

Jan 21 06:13:48 Ubuntu milter-greylist[30663]: Stopping Greylist Mail Filter
Daemon: greylist.
Jan 21 06:13:48 Ubuntu milter-greylist[30672]: Starting Greylist Mail Filter
Daemon: process already running.
Jan 21 06:13:48 Ubuntu milter-greylist[30672]: greylist.

Jan 21 06:13:48 Ubuntu milter-greylist[1196]: smfi_main() returned 0
Jan 21 06:13:48 Ubuntu milter-greylist[1196]: Final database dump: no change to
dump

This is probably caused by the incorrect unit file generated by systemd:
$ systemctl cat milter-greylist.service
# /run/systemd/generator.late/milter-greylist.service
# Automatically generated by systemd-sysv-generator

[Unit]
Documentation=man:systemd-sysv-generator(8)
SourcePath=/etc/init.d/milter-greylist
Description=LSB: Script to start/stop the greylist-milter
Before=multi-user.target
Before=multi-user.target
Before=multi-user.target
Before=graphical.target
After=nss-lookup.target
After=remote-fs.target
After=sendmail.service

[Service]
Type=forking
Restart=no
TimeoutSec=5min
IgnoreSIGPIPE=no
KillMode=process
GuessMainPID=no
RemainAfterExit=yes
SuccessExitStatus=5 6
ExecStart=/etc/init.d/milter-greylist start
ExecStop=/etc/init.d/milter-greylist stop
ExecReload=/etc/init.d/milter-greylist reload

When restarting mitler-greylist, systemd executes '/etc/init.d/milter-
greylist start' and '/etc/init.d/milter-greylist stop', however
'/etc/init.d/milter-greylist restart' actually has got an additional '--
retry 5' passed to 'start-stop-daemon --stop' so that start-stop-daemon
can make sure that the process does finish.

An easy fix is to add --retry to '/etc/init.d/milter-greylist stop' as
well. I've tested it and attached the patch here. But it'd be probably
better to ship a proper systemd unit file.

You might want to run 'apt --fix-broken install' to correct these.
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 : Depends: libelf1:i386 (>= 0.142) but it is not going to
be installed
 libnvidia-gl-390:i386 : Depends: libwayland-client0:i386 (>= 1.3.92) but it is
not going to be installed
 Depends: libwayland-server0:i386 (>= 1.2.0) but it is
not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt --fix-broken install' with no packages (or
specify a solution).

[Bug 1733993] [NEW] Ubuntu 17.10 Grub2 installer crashes with Samsung EVO 850 SSD

2017-11-22 Thread Frederick Harris
Public bug reported:

Tried again to install Ubuntu 17.10 onto a new Samsung EVO 850 500GB
SSD. The installer still crashes when it tries to load the Grub2 boot
loader. I have done some checking on the forums, and every time I get a
possible solution, Grub seems to come up with a new reason why it can't
be installed, but a lot of the forum entries are older, c. 2012 with
Ubuntu 12.10. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

[Bug 1696206] [NEW] systemd drops lists concatenated with EOF

2017-06-06 Thread Frederick Doe
Public bug reported:

Disclaimer: I originally posted this on Gallium OS's bug tracker but was told
that Gallium pulls directly from upstream Ubuntu. The original bug report can
be found here:
https://github.com/GalliumOS/galliumos-distro/issues/369

Release: Gallium OS
Package: systemd

When a systemd target file contains a "Conflicts" list at the end of the
file and does not provide a blank line between the end of the list and
the end of the file the list is silently dropped.

This is easier to demonstrate than it is to explain.

Take the following files:

`ServiceA.service`, `ServiceB.service`, and `ServiceC.service` are identical:
```
[Unit]
Description=This service just remains on
[Service]
Restart=always
ExecStart=/home/keeton/Permanent/Scripts/StayRunning.sh
```

`StayRunning.sh` is:
```
#!/bin/sh
while true
do
sleep 3
done
```
The three services launch a script that keeps on running indefinitely.

This target, `WillTurnOff.target`, will stop all three services as we would
expect:
```
[Unit]
Description=This target will turn off Service's A, B, and C
Conflicts= \
ServiceA.service \
ServiceB.service \
ServiceC.service \
```

This target, `WillNotTurnOff.target`, will **not** stop the stop the services:
```
[Unit]
Description=This target will *not* turn off Service's A, B, and C
Conflicts= \
ServiceA.service \
ServiceB.service \
ServiceC.service \
```

Notice the difference. `WillTurnOff.target` contains a blank line
between the last item on the list and the end of the file.

Several things to note:
* I'm pretty sure that this is a bug in systemd, but Gallium's on systemd
version 229, which is more than two versions behind the latest version.
* I'm guessing that systemd is concatenating the EOF onto the list since the
list ends with a backslash.
* Shouldn't systemd at least spit out a warning that something is wrong?

** Affects: systemd (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

2017-04-03 Thread Frederick
Yes, i tried installing it on a fresh empty non formatted drive. Still
didnt work. Not to mention you avoided my problem right from the get go if
i press install along with Windows i expect the option to work. So don't
blame me for "chosing" something wrong, it suggested i could install
alongside Windows wich then didnt work. After all this BS i then i
disconect all drives but 1 drive wich i then deletes the entire partion on.
And it STILL didn't work. Now imagine me using a entire evening on this BS.
and you just brush me off with a "you cant do that" its quite simple the
installation didnt work. A simple thing as installing the os failed. I
would like linux as my desktop, i have installed it serveral times. But 10
YEARS ago i installed it and it -automatically- mind you installed the is
and added my then 2 windows partitions with -NO- work on my part. It just
worked now 10 years later on a LTS release mind you, I can't even install
it... And you brush it off entirely with explation that cooked down means
"it's your fault" you don't even suggest in your post to try another
partition or drive?, you just state I did something wrong. _wow_ .
I want Linux to work as a desktop but as long as doing even the simplest
things take so much effort even for a experienced PC enthusiast its not
gonna happen.

TL:DNR The installer didn't work as intended and I did try several things
before reporting. Not to mention that the fact the installer didn't respond
after it failed was a dead giveaway

[Bug 1629480] Re: Internal Hard Drives Detected as Removable and External USB Drive as Non-Removable

2016-10-01 Thread Theodore Frederick
I have created a patch that makes hot-swap non-removable.

It works for me however if one uses hot-swap they cannot eject the
device.

In order for it to work we would need better hot-swap detection.

[Bug 1629579] Re: Nautilus does not launch becuase it cannot find commons_comun

2016-10-01 Thread Theodore Frederick
Fixed!

If a nautilus python extension under /usr/share/nautilus-
python/extensions/ cannot import a python module it crashes.

It was a pushbullet problem.

Please mark as closed, Thanks.

[Bug 1629480] [NEW] Internal Hard Drives Detected as Removable and External USB Drive as Non-Removable

2016-09-30 Thread Theodore Frederick
Public bug reported:

I excepted the 'dmraid' to detect my internal SATA Hard Drive as a non-
removable device

However, instead it reads it as removable and I am 95% sure it is a kernel
problem due to it showing ones (removable) instead of zeros (non-removable) in
/sys/class/block//removable.
The only hard drive that has the correct listing is the one Ubuntu is installed
on.

[Bug 371236] Re: Underlying /tmp directory has wrong permissions when hidden by mount point

2016-03-15 Thread Frederick J. Henderson
I also had this issue. I recently installed Ubuntu 14.04.4 using LVM.
/tmp was on its own logical volume.

I am using this computer as as LTSP server. When the client image is
built it used the permissions of /tmp prior to being mounted drwxr-xr-x
(755). /tmp should have a permission of drwxrwxrwt (1777) even if it
gets mounted over.

This wrong permission allowed the LTSP clients to boot but after a
successful login, the client would never see the desktop but were sent
back to the login screen. Changing the permissions of the client /tmp to
1777 fixed this issue.

[Bug 1437492] Re: boot stalls on USB detection errors

2016-02-17 Thread Frederick Chang
also have usb issues with 15.10 and asus x99e-ws.

get similar error messages as above:
[ 10.918992] usb 1-3: device descriptor read/all, error -110
[ 11.031084] usb 1-3: new high-speed USB device number 3 using xhci_hcd

consequence is that usb devices take a long time to be recognized.
takes a long time to enter the bios (the press f2 prompt for bios waits an
abnormally long time)

a complete power down and bios reset fixes the issue temporarily. (no
error message at boot up and fast usb device recognition) however this
fix is intermittent.

there is only a keyboard and mouse plugged in the usb ports.

[Bug 977228] Re: [Ubuntu 12.04] gnome-screenshot forgets "last-save-directory"

2015-10-11 Thread Frederick Billings
Auto save directory/last save directory both work for me if I call
gnome-screenshot or gnome-screenshot --interactive from an xterm, but
neither work when I press Print Screen. 'Screenshot of a window' and
'screenshot of an area' behave identically.

I worked around this issue by defining custom keyboard shortcuts to
'gnome-screenshot', 'gnome-screenshot -w', 'gnome-screenshot -a'. My
hunch is that the default shortcuts are passing '--file=$FILENAME' to
gnome-screenshot, after failing to define the filename properly (they
shouldn't pass --file to gnome-screenshot at all, imo), but I'm not sure
where to look to track down where this behavior is defined.

[Bug 1353185] Re: Chromium 36 upgrade will not execute

2015-01-01 Thread Frederick L Shope
On my original post for my AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2400+ machine, I was
running Ubuntu 12.04. Since then, I installed 14.04, which I most
recently decided to overwrite with Debian 7.7 (because Ubuntu no longer
provides a video driver compatible with my hardware -- but that's
another story). What I wanted to report here, for what it's worth, is
that Chomium won't execute under Debian 7.7 either. I get about the same
error message from a terminal execution as I did from Ubuntu.

Installation of Chromium 38.0.2125.111 did not eliminate the above
problem. Following is the screen output from running chromium-browser in
a terminal:

[Bug 1353185] Re: Chromium 36 upgrade will not execute

2014-09-02 Thread Frederick L Shope
I received the Chromium 37 update via the Update Manager and installed
it (thank you). However, Chromium will still not execute on my Athlon XP
2400+ machine. I now get the following screen output when executing from
the command line (which I did not get with version 36):

on my old machine since Firefox and Opera will start OK and are at least
partially operable there.

[Bug 1353185] Re: Chromium 36 upgrade will not execute

2014-08-26 Thread Frederick L Shope
Florian W.: Thank you for the clarification about version numbers. I
checked my own software update log and agree that there was, in fact, no
Chromium 35 from the Update Manager. Apparently Google's view of the
world through their narrow Windows does not give them much a realistic
panorama of the whole world.

I am now wondering if there is an easy way to revert to Chromiun 34. Or
would it be better to just abandon Chromium altogether on my older
machine? [ I do have a newer machine where Chromium 36 works OK. ]

[Bug 1353185] Re: Chromium 36 upgrade will not execute

2014-08-25 Thread Frederick L Shope
I have added an attachment with the output from cat /proc/cpuinfo.

I have not been able to find a core dump file after running chromium-
browser from the command line. I ran sudo find -name core.* at the
root directory, but did not find anything that seemed to be associated
with Chromium. I also tried gcore chromium-browser but it declined to
generate a core file probably because chromium-browser is a script
file. I also tried gcore at /usr/lib/chromium-browser, which I think
is the Chromium executable, but it gave the same messages:

gcore chromium-browser
Illegal process-id: chromium-browser.
You can't do that without a process to debug.
The program is not being run.
gcore: failed to create core.chromium-browser

Thank you.

[Bug 1353185] Re: Chromium 36 upgrade will not execute

2014-08-25 Thread Frederick L Shope
Based on the comments of Opera above, I would say my problem with
Chromium 36 is not properly a bug, but a problem of obsolete hardware.
My machine where Chromium won't run is a 2003 machine with an AMD
Athlon(TM) XP 2400+.

I guess I should emphasize that Chromium 35 seemed to be running more or
less OK on my AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2400+ machine, although Adobe Flash
Player will not run with any of the browsers installed there (Firefox,
Opera, or Chromium).

[Bug 1049067] Re: vboxvideo driver not auto-loaded due to missing mod alias

2013-06-12 Thread Frederick Gleason
I am new to using Ubuntu 12.04 and Linux. My Unity Appearance does not
show the Icon size so that I can adjust it smaller. I found some
reference to 3d acceleration no working and issued a suggested command

/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p
Result:
OpenGL Warning: Failed to connect to host. Make sure 3D acceleration is enabled
for this VM.
libGL error: failed to load driver: vboxvideo
libGL error: Try again with LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose for more details.
OpenGL vendor string:   VMware, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 0x301)
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 9.0.3
Not software rendered:no
Not blacklisted:  yes
GLX fbconfig: yes
GLX texture from pixmap:  yes
GL npot or rect textures: yes
GL vertex program:yes
GL fragment program:  yes
GL vertex buffer object:  yes
GL framebuffer object:yes
GL version is 1.4+:   yes
Unity 3D supported:   no

So then I tried to read up on VirtualBox support of graphics acceleration, and
found my way here.
I do use the most recent version of VirtualBox on a Windows7x64bit host Dell
IXPS 15 Laptop with NVIDIA GeForce GT540M 2GB graphics with optimus and an
Integrated Intel Graphics Card. I am running it with the NVIDIA card enabled.

I would like to be able to reduce the size of Unity Icons, however I'd
also like to know that the programs I am running are using acceleration.

[Bug 1058216] [NEW] Improvement of the libreoffice-kde package

2012-09-28 Thread frederick
Public bug reported:

With libreoffice-kde package and oxygen-gtk sets in systemsettings, we
get the kde file picker but menus in LibreOffice are ugly (please see
http://ubuntuone.com/1MAHFwgJwk74hVkHJfWI0d).

Without the libreoffice-kde package and oxygen-gtk sets, we get nice
menus (with edges well defined, please see
http://ubuntuone.com/6PZTfD2sAX6UNX6TItvyM5) but gtk file picker to
open/save a file.

A good idea will be improving this package for keeping the oxygen-gtk
appearance of LO (with edges of menus well defined) and get the kde file
picker (not the gtk one) when we want to open/save a file from LO as the
firefox-kde-support on the blue-shell ppa does for Firefox. Moreover it
affects all distro running KDE, so it will be beneficial for all of us.

Who can do this improvement ? kubuntu dev, ubuntu dev , any others ?

[Bug 754618] Re: Failed to open encrypted home directory

2012-07-11 Thread Frederick IV Barbarossa
I have the same bug. (Using encrypted home directories, and a separate root
partition, with Thunar 1.2.3 in Xubuntu 12.04.)
Once it happens in one account, all the other accounts in the same computer
start having the same problem.
The problem is rather frequent. And it's quite annoying, having to always
reboot the computer in order to solve it...

[Bug 491940] Re: Patch for LTSP clients to properly reboot/shutdown

2012-06-21 Thread Frederick J. Henderson
I have a LTSP client that functions as a photo frame running
gphotoframe. I have the following in lts.conf for that client

#Laptop ethernet
[00:0*:**:**:**:**]
LIKE=Atoms
# Used to allow auto login of clients
LDM_AUTOLOGIN=false
LDM_LOGIN_TIMEOUT=7

# Needed for LDM_LOGIN_TIMEOUT to work properly
LDM_GUESTLOGIN=true

LDM_USERNAME=media
LDM_PASSWORD=***
#SOUND=N
#Auto Shut down
SHUTDOWN_TIME=20:00:00

I believe the lines that will solve the problem of the endless loop are:

LDM_AUTOLOGIN=false
LDM_LOGIN_TIMEOUT=7
LDM_GUESTLOGIN=true

The LDM_LOGIN_TIMEOUT parameter makes it wait that many seconds before
automatically login in. Adjust it as you like.

[Bug 973806] Re: Evince 3.2.1 fails to print

2012-04-10 Thread Frederick L Shope
Thank you.

I find that I can no longer reproduce the print problem I described
above. All print jobs that I have generated more recently, including
several from evince, have printed without a problem and without going in
on hold status. Should I still try to generate the print log information
indicated in your instructions?
