[Bug 1353185] Re: Chromium 36 upgrade will not execute

2015-01-01 Thread Frederick L Shope
On my original post for my AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2400+ machine, I was
running Ubuntu 12.04. Since then, I installed 14.04, which I most
recently decided to overwrite with Debian 7.7 (because Ubuntu no longer
provides a video driver compatible with my hardware -- but that's
another story). What I wanted to report here, for what it's worth, is
that Chomium won't execute under Debian 7.7 either. I get about the same
error message from a terminal execution as I did from Ubuntu.

I received the Chromium 37 update via the Update Manager and installed

[Bug 1353185] Re: Chromium 36 upgrade will not execute

2014-08-26 Thread Frederick L Shope
Florian W.: Thank you for the clarification about version numbers. I
checked my own software update log and agree that there was, in fact, no
Chromium 35 from the Update Manager. Apparently Google's view of the
world through their narrow Windows does not give them much a realistic
panorama of the whole world.

I am now wondering if there is an easy way to revert to Chromiun 34. Or
would it be better to just abandon Chromium altogether on my older
machine? [ I do have a newer machine where Chromium 36 works OK. ]

I guess I should emphasize that Chromium 35 seemed to be running more or
less OK on my AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2400+ machine, although Adobe Flash
Player will not run with any of the browsers installed there (Firefox,

2014-08-25 Thread Frederick L Shope
Based on the comments of Opera above, I would say my problem with
Chromium 36 is not properly a bug, but a problem of obsolete hardware.
My machine where Chromium won't run is a 2003 machine with an AMD
Athlon(TM) XP 2400+.

[Bug 1353185] Re: Chromium 36 upgrade will not execute

2014-08-25 Thread Frederick L Shope
I have added an attachment with the output from "cat /proc/cpuinfo".

I have not been able to find a core dump file after running "chromium-
browser" from the command line. I ran "sudo find -name core.*" at the
root directory, but did not find anything that seemed to be associated
with Chromium. I also tried "gcore chromium-browser" but it declined to
generate a core file probably because "chromium-browser" is a script
file. I also tried gcore at "/usr/lib/chromium-browser", which I think
is the Chromium executable, but it gave the same messages:

gcore chromium-browser
Illegal process-id: chromium-browser.
You can't do that without a process to debug.
The program is not being run.
gcore: failed to create core.chromium-browser

Thank you.

[Bug 973806] Re: Evince 3.2.1 fails to print

2012-04-10 Thread Frederick L Shope
Thank you.

I find that I can no longer reproduce the print problem I described
above. All print jobs that I have generated more recently, including
several from evince, have printed without a problem and without going in
on hold status. Should I still try to generate the print log information
indicated in your instructions?

[Bug 973806] Re: Evince 3.2.1 fails to print

2012-04-05 Thread Frederick L Shope
Since my initial report, I have discovered that print jobs from most
applications are now failing to print. What I have observed is that the
jobs are going into the print queue on "hold" status, but can be printed
from the Printing/Printer/View Print Queue by repeatedly clicking the
release icon (green arrowhead). So far, this works with all applications
that I have tried, including Evince. So it now appears that the problem
is not with Evince at all.

[Bug 973806] [NEW] Evince 3.2.1 fails to print

2012-04-04 Thread Frederick L Shope
Public bug reported:

Evince (Document Viewer) 3.2.1 "using poppler/cairo (0.16.7) fails to
print. Print job appears in print queue as status "held".

My printer is a Brother HL-2140 on a USB port.

Other applications print normally (e.g., Libre Office, Adobe Reader).
Adobe Reader will print OK the same file that evince will not.

The Evince print problem does not depend on the particular PDF. I tried
several different PDFs with the same result.

I have another machine with Ubuntu 11.04 and Evince 2.32.0. It prints
the same file (i.e., that evince will not print) normally on an HPLJ5L
(I do not have the Brother connected to this machine).

I can provide the debugging report from the Printing application
help/troubleshoot report, but it is 700 lines of text.

I am running Ubuntu 11.10 and the system is up to date.

[Bug 929910] Re: Software Center and Update Manager will not start after downloading Full Circle Magazine

2012-02-09 Thread Frederick L Shope
I found that the file

 /etc/apt/sources.list.d/private-ppa.launchpad.net_commercial-ppa-
uploaders_fullcircle-issue-56_ubuntu.list

only had root read permission, unlike the rest of the files in that
directory. When I added universal read permission, the software center
and the update manager started running again. This solved my problem.

My original bug report is probably inappropriate, but perhaps the
default permissions for the above file need to include universal read
permission.

Sorry for any inconvenience here.

My problem is solved.

[Bug 929910] [NEW] Software Center and Update Manager will not start after downloading Full Circle Magazine

2012-02-09 Thread Frederick L Shope
Public bug reported:

After a routine software update via the update manager and after
downloading Full Circle Magazine, I found that neither the software
center nor the update manager would start when clicked on the launcher.
The software center seemed to have hung during the Full Circle Magazine
install, and I killed it after about 15 min. Afterwards, Full Circle
Magazine opened OK and seemed to readable.

The update manager does report the following error message:

"Could not initialize the package information
An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the
following error message:

'E:Opening /etc/apt/sources.list.d/private-ppa.launchpad.net_commercial-
ppa-uploaders_fullcircle-issue-56_ubuntu.list - ifstream::ifstream (13:
Permission denied)'"

I tried both warm and cold reboots.

I tried running 'ubuntu-bug update-manager' in terminal, but only
received the following message:

"Could not determine the package or source package name."

I also tried running ubuntu-bug with the process ID for the update
manager from the system monitor, but just received the following
message.

"The specified process ID does not belong to a program."

All of the above error conditions are repeatable.

I am reporting this as bug per instructions from the above error
messages.

Thank you.
