[Bug 219541] [NEW] iwl4965: does not react to kill switch

2008-04-19 Thread Frits Jalvingh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24-16-generic

I'm the proud and lazy owner of an Acer 9920 laptop which has an iwl4965
wireless chipset. The Acer appearently always boots with the kill switch
"on", i.e. I need to toggle it first after a boot before WIFI would
work. And if I use the stock modules which have version 1.2.0 of the
iwl4965 driver toggling this switch will work properly: Network Manager
will pickup the change and I'll get connected properly.

That version of the driver however stops working after a while due to
bug 200509, so I took the advice there and used the newer module package
which has version 1.2.25 of the iwl4965 driver.

This driver version however is not able to pick up the killswitch
change. When the laptop boots the log states that the kill switch is
enabled (which it is), but toggling it on the keyboard does not switch
networking on. The only way to do that is to toggle the switch once
after boot, followed by a rmmod and modprobe of the iwl4965 driver. And
being lazy this is of course a problem ;-)

The BIOS does not have an option to enable WIFI by default, so every
boot I have to sudo and do the modprobe dance.

I will attach a dmesg log for the boot.
This occurs on Hardy, up-to-date till today.

[Bug 281519] Re: display corruption with nvidia driver

2008-10-15 Thread Frits Jalvingh
Ok; I tested a few days with the older drivers and they work properly.
There was one issue where the middle of the screen within Opera did not
update properly but we'll assume that to be a fluke... The odd thing is
that I distinctly remember that when I ran Ubuntu 8.04 I updated to the
beta drivers (177) directly from the nvidia site and they worked
properly... Ah well.

[Bug 278008] Re: iwlagn wifi never comes up after RF kill is disabled

2008-10-04 Thread Frits Jalvingh
I have an Acer 9920 with an 4965 chipset. This machine has a kill switch
which is a toggle and it defaults to ON (killed) always. I have the same
problem: after booting the killswitch is always ON. Toggling it in 8.04
would enable the wireless properly. In 8.10 nothing happens. No state
change is visible *at all* in dmesg. Unloading and reloading iwlagn
causes wireless to become active.

[Bug 269264] Re: rfkill switch on Intel 4965AGN wireless does not work in intrepid

2008-10-07 Thread Frits Jalvingh
Same problem here, on an Acer Aspire 9920. This always boots with the kill
switch ON (killed); the only way to get a connection is to first toggle the
switch and then removing and adding the iwlagn module. This worked properly on
Hardy.
What has changed is that with Hardy I got messages about "scan code xxx" in the
dmesg log when I toggled the kill switch. In Intrepid nothing is visible when I
toggle the switch.

[Bug 281519] [NEW] display corruption with nvidia driver

2008-10-10 Thread Frits Jalvingh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-177

After installing intrepid beta with the nvidia 177 driver my screen contents is
often corrupted. Resolution etc is OK but the following happens all the time:
- when editing text (for instance in the console) the text cursor is not
properly erased causing multiple cursor images (black blobs or underlines) to
remain visible. The same happens now in this textarea 8-( - lots of vertical
bars at the left of the input area.
- When switching tabs for instance in Opera not all of the tab contents is
redrawn. This sometimes leaves content of the previous tab visible and
sometimes the area is just white. If the area contains links or other active
stuff it becomes visible (partly) when the mouse moves over it.

This machine has worked properly from 7.10 on, and I *think* an update
of this week (oct-6 to oct-10) has caused the problem; I am not sure
however since I installed the beta on saturday oct-4th.

I'll attach an Xorg.0.log.

[Bug 968308]

2013-12-11 Thread Frits Jalvingh
(In reply to Francesco D\'Amore from comment #84)
> Unfortunatly there aren't JVM crash files available for logging.
Well, I had that too; I managed to get proper jvm logfiles by using a start
script instead of Eclipse's launcher. Create a file "start.sh" in your eclipse
home with:

#!/bin/bash
ulimit -c unlimited
/opt/java/jdk1.7.0_25/bin/java -XX:MaxPermSize=512m -Xmx2048m
-Dorg.eclipse.swt.browser.XULRunnerPath=/dev/null
-Dorg.eclipse.swt.browser.DefaultType=mozilla -jar
plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_*.jar -console

Mark it executable (chmod a+x start.sh) and use it to start Eclipse.
This at least produces the jvm logs again.

In addition, for me Eclipse on Ubuntu 13.04 has been *rock solid*, both
4.2 and 4.3, no crashes *at all* with daily use for many hours a day
(yes, lack of real life ;-) by doing the following:

* Disable browser support by adding the
-Dorg.eclipse.swt.browser.XULRunnerPath=/dev/null
-Dorg.eclipse.swt.browser.DefaultType=mozilla
parameters to eclipse.ini

* Apply the workaround for bug# 416869:
sudo apt-get remove overlay-scrollbar

With those things no crashes.

[Bug 968308]

2013-05-19 Thread Frits Jalvingh
It does not abort that often on 3.8.2. But 4.3, currently m7, does it an awful
lot. The problem remains that there is no certain way to reproduce: sometimes I
need to start 4.3m7 several times quickly in succession because as soon as the
main window appears and I move the mouse over source code (which would probably
show the hover containing source information) Eclipse aborts.
But there are also times that I can work for 3 hours without any problem.

I don't know if it's possible, but the huge problem now is that I can
hardly use 4.3m7 at all. Would it be possible to somehow "guard" against
this exception somewhere in the source code, so that instead of
completely dying the process continues?

In the meantime, if there is anything I can help with to get more
details on this let me know...

Heh, that dies immediately with:

Thanks a million for posting this!
I removed the libwebkitgtk-1.0* files to test. Eclipse starts normally and
hovers work, but they do not seem to use a browser window anymore: they look
like text input boxes with only rudimentary formatting of the html javadoc.

Looking at what libraries are open (lsof -p) I see that webkitgtk-3* is
not used at all - so clearly eclipse is not automatically picking up
libwebkitgtk-3 but just not using libwebkitgtk at all. Which is so far
fine by me - not dying has priority ;-)

[Bug 599330] [NEW] Oracle I/O performance in Lucid appaling

2010-06-28 Thread Frits Jalvingh
Public bug reported:

I installed Oracle 10g R2 32-bit on Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit. I know Oracle
is not supported on Ubuntu, so you decide what you want to do with this
bug report ;-)

After installation I can start Oracle and its listener just fine. But
I/O performance is appaling: I am doing an import of a big database and
it takes forever. When I look with iotop I see a total disk write speed
of 950K/s top and often less. The db writer process often has only
400K/s, the logwriter around 140K/s.

The file system is ext4; I will try again later on an ext3 drive to see
if that makes a difference.

Normally IO on this system is not slow; for instance gzip -d for that
same dump on that same drive reports 70M/s usually.

The machine is a Core I7 920 running 2.6.32-23-generic-pae #37-Ubuntu

[Bug 579889] [NEW] nvidia-current failed compile without reporting error

2010-05-13 Thread Frits Jalvingh
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-current

In Lucid 10.04:
I have a 4GB machine but the installation process installed a non-PAE kernel,
causing only 3GB to be available. I manually installed the PAE generic kernel
package (BUT FORGOT TO INSTALL THE HEADERS PACKAGE FOR IT) and rebooted, then I
installed nvidia-current. Installation did not report an error but X would not
start after reboot.

The cause was that the kernel driver compile failed because the headers
were missing.

I think nvidia-current should pull those in, and should report an
installation failure if they are missing.

[Bug 1678477] Re: Kernel has troule recognizing Corsair Strafe RGB keyboard

2017-08-03 Thread Frits Jalvingh
Thanks @Kai-Heng Feng for your help. I have installed your kernel and it
does seem to work. The boot does not delay for 30 or more seconds
anymore, and the keyboard is usable immediately after boot. It still
nags a bit:

[2.249880] usb 3-1: New USB device found, idVendor=1b1c, idProduct=1b20
[2.249881] usb 3-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[2.249882] usb 3-1: Product: Corsair STRAFE RGB Gaming Keyboard
[2.249882] usb 3-1: Manufacturer: Corsair
[2.249883] usb 3-1: SerialNumber: 1303D038AEA7A44454E1B806F5001944
[2.252101] hidraw: raw HID events driver (C) Jiri Kosina
[2.254100] usbhid 3-1:1.2: couldn't find an input interrupt endpoint

but so far it seems to work well. I will watch it for a while and report
back if there is still trouble.
