[Bug 69306] Re: snd-hda-intel sound input utterly broken
I will try to mark all problems related to sound input with snd-hda- intel as duplicate of this bug. The suggested workaround in the bug found by Skiold (making at least the internal mic working) is maybe applyable for Dell (Vostro) laptops. But for example in my case, according to /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/ALSA-Configuration.txt.gz there is even no option available for my chipset: CONEXANT Analog CX20549 (Venice). I can easily and successfully switch to any other layout (the input differs in non-Java programs), but it remains the default one for Java applications. Can confirm this. The same issue: aptitude installed the newer kernels, I failed to allow the postinstall script to overwrite grub.lst. I thought it wants to change some default values, that I set to my preferences, and the boot lines are going to be updated anyway, later, when update-grub is called by postinstall. But update-grub does not rewrite the appropriate lines, even as it prints out correct "Found kernel: " lines. I do not experience it, if my external monitor is not connected to my laptop, thus the DPI is detected correctly. Changing the dpi settings in about:config does not have any effect on this! (DPI is correctly set in Gnome and gdm, xrandr -q displays the right numbers. Altough xdpyinfo returns 209 digit per inch. I have only 98. [Bug 201596] Re: xv is not working on intel when using compiz
This is not a duplicate. Bug #152206 is about general video tearing and poor performance. That bug is more a duplicate of #177492 , which was solved by forcing MigrationHeurisitc "greedy" for all chipsets and setting the env. variable INTEL_BATCH=1 . I had only problems with xv video playback, but if and only compiz was enabled. Now I played with the options in xorg.conf, and got it working! :) According to the changelog, in the latest xserver-xorg-video-intel (2:2.2.1-1ubuntu4) patches were added to enable hardware overlay for i965, and textured video was disabled by default. But the solution was to set 'Option "TexturedVideo" "false"'. So using the current intel driver (with default accel method EXA and greedy migration heuristic), xv works with compiz. But TexturedVideo is not disabled (to enable HardwareOverlay) by default. [Bug 201937] [NEW] [Hardy][regression] input devices (in particular Logitech mice) that require evdev to work properly are now broken
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-all There are several input devices, in particular Logitech MX and LX series mice, which require evdev to work properly. Without evdev some buttons do not generate input events. Also evdev was required to change the button mapping to get horizontal scrolling working. ( https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MX1000Mouse , or see bug #27421 ) Running Hardy, using X.Org 7.3 with XInputHotplug, evdev is disabled by default. If a device is listed in xorg.conf with driver evdev, it will not work, as indicated by the log file: (...) (EE) Configured Mouse: cannot open input pEvdev (II) UnloadModule: "evdev" (EE) PreInit returned NULL for "Configured Mouse" (...) As suggested in bug #173833 , evdev can be enabled via hal, by $ sudo cp /usr/share/doc/hal/examples/10-x11-input.fdi /etc/hal/fdi/policy/ This indeed enables evdev devices (there were reports, that this is not always the case), but now evdev overtakes the control for all input devices. I attach my log for this case. As a result Ctrl+Alt+Backspace did not work, the given keyboard layout specified in xorg.conf was ignored. Other problems were also reported there. (No support for multiple readers for the same device etc.) As stated in bug #42678 the InputHotplug facility should be used instead of evdev. But as mentioned, lots of input devices do no work properly this way. For me, only evdev was able to recognize all the 12 input buttons for my LX7 USB mouse. In fact, is has only nine, but then I could set the appropriate button mapping to got all the nine real buttons including the horizontal scrolling working: $ xinput set-button-map "`xinput list|grep Logitech|tr -d \\"|cut -f1`" 1 2 3 4 5 11 12 8 9 10 6 7 I suggest either to fix evdev and enable it's usage by default again, or make the xinputhotplug recognize all input devices properly. ** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [Hardy][regression] input devices (in particular Logitech mice) that require evdev to work properly are now broken https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/201937 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

@unggnu: What do you mean by "Overlay for video output isn't used anymore in current Hardy"? I guess your video is not played via xv, but via X11/shm. Please try mplayer -vo xv file.avi . [Bug 201596] Re: xv is not working on intel 965 (x3100) when using compiz
I tried (as suggested) to use xserver-xgl, but brought no change on the issue. I'm using an external monitor (with 1680x1050 resolution). Putting even a low resolution video to full-screen results in a playback with approx. 0.5 FPS. [Bug 201596] Re: xv is not working on intel 965 (x3100) when using compiz
Hmm.. That sounds interesting. AFAIK this is a well known deficiency of the intel driver: http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6006 . Do you use Xgl as suggested in this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=707473) ? I use plain X, as suggested for Hardy. I do not have any preferences for the acceleration method. Everything else works fine, only Xv is unusable (both with XAA and EXA), but only if compiz is enabled. Are you sure, you use the xv output in your player (not X11, nor gl, nor any compiz video output plugin)? Please also try it with a HD or a high resolution video. Low resolution videos may just be laggy and cause high CPU load. [Bug 59695] Re: High frequency of load/unload cycles on some hard disks may shorten lifetime
Changes in laptop-mode can not fix this, because laptop-mode is disabled by default. Even if enabled, you still have to explicitly set CONTROL_HD_POWERMGMT=1 in the configuration of laptop-mode. BTW the reason why laptop-mode is fixing this problem is, that if the latter option is set, it calls hdparm -B with sane parameters. So it does the same as suggested before as a fix. (But laptop-mode can not be enabled by default, because it is for laptops and because some models just freeze with it.) Here is an another solution, that does not enable SHMConfig by default! It is the same idea, except it leaves SHMConfig untouched. [Bug 199993] [NEW] [Hardy][patch]xorg.conf should include a big enough virtual screen
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-core Would it be possible to change xorg.conf's default screen section from Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Monitor "Configured Monitor" EndSection to Section "Screen" Identifier "Default Screen" Monitor "Configured Monitor" DefaultDepth24 SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Virtual 2048 2048 EndSubSection EndSection ? This would make it possible for many people with multiple monitors (which is common nowadays) to stretch their desktop across them, without manually editing xorg.conf. If this is not set, then the video driver usually does not allocates enough (fb?) memory to fit both screens into it. All intel chips are well-known affected, ATI bug #199337 . As a result stretching the desktop fails without a hint where to correct the problem. Xrandr simply does not displays resolutions that would not fit into the maximal resolution, making people believe, that Linux/Ubuntu/the video card does not support the desired one. Also gnome-display-properties just does not works in this case. With the virtual screen size explicitly given, xrandr indicates the availability of bigger resolutions and gnome-display-properties works: $ xrandr Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1280 x 800, maximum 2048 x 2048 I guess this patch does not affect users who do not use a second display, except from a little higher memory consumption. The bug still exists in current Hardy. How to reproduce: go to Menu -> System -> Preferences -> Keyboard. On the layout tab add a second layout. Uncheck "Separate layout for each window".
