I have a similar issue on my desktop. When I boot, most of the time all I get is a black screen with no login window. I can change to a terminal prompt (ctrl + alt +F2) to reboot the computer. [Bug 843981] [NEW] vlc locks up system when playing video
Public bug reported: This is a problem with the latest version of VLC (version 1.1.11) in Ubuntu 11.10 Beta. VLC in Ubuntu 11.04 had a memory leak which was resolved, I am not sure whether this issue is related to that memory leak or whether it is separate issue. [Bug 839280] [NEW] transmission slow to start
