[Bug 890832] Re: exfat support for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

2011-11-15 Thread Gabriel.G.Gordillo
I know about it and it's not a problem of somebody developing it. It's a
problem of Ubuntu not supporting it as a default package.

If this package would be targeted for 12.04 and included in Alphas and
Betas of Ubuntu, bugs would help in the development and thing could
speed up a bit.

This is a critical issue ... I know people not moving towards Linux or
Ubuntu just because of this ... their drives are formatted in exFAT and
they can't change the filesystem as it has to be compatible with Windows
... and using FAT32 with a 2 Tb drive it's kind of nonsense because of
the 4Gb file size limit.

[Bug 890832] [NEW] exfat support for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

2011-11-15 Thread Gabriel.G.Gordillo
Public bug reported:

3 years after the SD Association announced a new standard for high-
capacity SD memory cards (Microsoft exFAT) there is still no "out of the
box" support for exFAT.

As Precise Pangolin is going to be a LTS with 5 years of support, this
feature should be implemented as default. As a LTS version will be
widespread and the fact that many hard drives, SD XC cards and many
other devices are using this file system as default will make very
difficult to use Ubuntu for the average user.

As LTS versions emphasize in stability, reliability and hardware
support, without supporting exFAT, many devices wont work at all. This
will be a major issue for users without advanced Linux knowledge and for
those without an stable internet connection. ExFAT support in Ubuntu
it's a critical Issue to be addressed as soon as possible as not having
it affects bug #1 ...

... nowbody will delete Windows from his computer or even use Ubuntu
without having the seccurity of reading and writing the new hardware he
buy. I'm actually finding very hard to find workarounds that are
actually a bad patch

No Blueprint or Bug has been published after UDS for 12.04 for exFAT
support or implementation of Fuse-exFAT within Ubuntu. That's why I'm
publishing this Bug, my knowledge is not so advanced as to write a
Blueprint. This is my first Bug, sorry if it's not the right place to
publish this.

 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Confirmed

Re: [Bug 787225] Re: after 11.04 upgrade SOME usb device doesn't automount

2011-10-13 Thread Gabriel.G.Gordillo
I send this email private as I´s not concernung the Bug itself, but
propted by the procedure.

I installed the 3.1-rc9 and everythis was working properly. As I set
up the previous Kernel to be de default with the startup loader (I´m
not sure of the name of the application. it´s simple and allow to
configure simple options in grup and the default kernel) and did a
reboot, now a get a "memtest86 v4.01" wich I can´t get rid of.

I´ve tryed to start from CD but it´s coming still the memtest
I´ve tryied to unmount the HD, and the test dissapears, but without
HD, and starting from CD I can´t solve anything.
I´ve tryed removing the Ram modules, just in case one of both were
broken ... memtest still was there.
I´ve tryed starting fom USB ... and memtest keep coming

The weard thing is that the memtest is testing the RAM, not the
harddrive nad the program is not allowing to skip. When I wait until
the end of the test, it just start again and tell you to click ESC for
finishing, wich in fact reboot the computer, what prompt the memtest
again in an unfinishing loop.

Can I consither my computer as Broken or there is any hope!! Please
give me hope because I need it ... it´s old but I need it ...
specially what´s inside the HD!!

Thanks in advance
Gabriel

[Bug 787225] Re: after 11.04 upgrade SOME usb device doesn't automount

2011-10-12 Thread Gabriel.G.Gordillo
After Installing for Testing the upstream Kernel
2.6.36-02063808-generic, all devices were working normally ... Webcam,
mouse and hard drives were loaded without any problem.

After moving back to current Ubuntu Kernel 2.6.38-11 generic, none of
the previous devices was loaded when pluged in.

[Bug 787225] Re: after 11.04 upgrade SOME usb device doesn't automount

2011-10-09 Thread Gabriel.G.Gordillo
I've the same problem.

In my case I solve it with a restart. All devices plugged in during system
start will work normally.
This makes working with the system very hard. I've been even thinking of moving
back to W.S.

there are two entries in Ubuntu Forums related to this:
