[Bug 2083738] [NEW] Gimp crashes after clicking on "Close all"

2024-10-05 Thread Gabriele Inghirami
Public bug reported:

Sequence of actions before the crash:
- created a new image from a scan with xscanimage
- cut and pasted into a new image a portion of the scanned image
- saved (exported) the new image in jpg format
- clicked on "Close all", discarding the changes

1) No LSB modules are available.
Description:Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS
Release:24.04

2) gimp:
  Installed: 2.10.36-3build3
  Candidate: 2.10.36-3build3
  Version table:
 *** 2.10.36-3build3 500

3) I expected that Gimp closed the image and returned to the initial
panel

4) Gimp crashed because of a segfault

Here is the debug log produced by GIMP.

[Bug 2067657] Re: Cursor response to touchpad sporadically becomes laggy

2024-06-06 Thread Gabriele Romano
I've tried the workaround you suggested even if my problem is different, but
the problem still occurr.
It does not happen using an external mouse, it's strictly linked with the
trackpad.
I think it's a bug in the kernel too, because happens sporadically also when
not under load, lasts for 10-20 seconds and disappear. This however happens
recurrently.

[Bug 2067657] Re: Mouse slowdown using trackpad

2024-06-03 Thread Gabriele Romano
No the problem happen independently if i put to sleep or not. After
booting, and a bit of interaction with few programs open in the
background, when i try to scroll, for example, a pdf using the trackpad
then it start lagging and becoming not precise, but the behaviour is the
same as described by the user in the bug you cited

[Bug 2067657] [NEW] Mouse slowdown using trackpad

2024-05-30 Thread Gabriele Romano
Public bug reported:

when using for a bit the pc, under load but sporadically, the system
slows down and appears to be some inertia to the pointer movement and
the page scroll gestures, making impossible to perform precise point and
click actions. With an external mouse does not happen, it happens only
with the trackpad. My pc specs are quite high and i just changed thermal
paste and in windows 10 it does not happen, so it's not an hardware
issue.

[Bug 1918658] [NEW] Display glitches when showing context menu

2021-03-11 Thread gabriele
Public bug reported:

I am using Android Studio to develop Applications. When i have lots of
windows opened and i try to open a context menu or write code, it shows
a frame of some applications that are below the current window. In the
video it is more clear. I don't know if this is a problem related to
Ubuntu or Android Studio but it is very noisy. In this case it is clear
that the frame shown belongs to the Arduino window that is open under
it. Sometimes i can see frames of my wallpaper (when i don't have any
window under it) or others. This problem doesn't happen with other
programs (for now).

[Bug 1917191]

2021-03-05 Thread Gabriele Svelto
Ugh, this bug is affecting Linux users real badly on 86. Do we have a
way to reach out to distro maintainers to try and help them roll out a
local fix for their 86 builds?

[Bug 1917801] [NEW] Multi monitor bug opening windows

2021-03-04 Thread gabriele
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

When i open a window like Spotify or GitKracken, that should open in my
second monitor (because i always use them there), Ubuntu draws it in my
main monitor, but, if i try to move it, resize or press an area of the
window, it selects the window that is under it (like if the windows does
not logically exist there). If i click on the window title bar, it
sometimes appears on the second monitor and is resized (also if i press
the minimize button or others). Sometimes the window is not responding
until i do not minimize it from the dock and re-maximize it. Once it
does that everything works well.

In my case volume levels are good on both 20.10 and 20.04.
Consider that the alsa-ucm-conf parameters upstream for chtmax98090 are based

I updated today to 20.10 and tested.

With the official alsa-ucm-conf 1.2.2 and with the official kernel the
sound works. However I needed to use alsamixer manually to manage the
volume levels when plugging in and out the headset jack.

I didn't find a Groovy build of the testing 1.2.2 in your ppa, therefore
I installed alsa-ucm-conf 1.2.3 from Debian testing, rebooted and a
perfectly working sound was back.

[Bug 1871306] Re: [SRU]No sound from internal card chtmax98090 - missing UCM2 files in alsa-ucm-conf 1.2.2, available in alsa-ucm-conf 1.2.3

2020-10-10 Thread Gabriele Tettamanzi
@Hui

I repeated the test. I'm afraid I did a mistake in reporting the test
results.

mainline 5.7 rc1: sound not working (the sound emitted is not intelligible,
it's like an infinite echo loop)
mainline 5.6.0: sound working, Skype test not possible because wifi connection
is not working

When I boot back to mainline 5.8.14 sound s perfect and wifi works as expected.

2020-10-09 Thread Gabriele Tettamanzi
@Hui

I did a new round of test.

1. purged alsa-ucm-conf and installed alsa-ucm-conf
1.2.2-1ubuntu0.4.1+test from your ppa

2. tested sound on 4 kernels
   a. mainline generic 5.8.13 and 5.6.19: sound is working fine, Skype echo
test included, headset jack plugging and unplugging are managed with no issue
   b. 5.4.48 and 5.6.0 1020 oem: sound becomes garbled/crackling, instability
on jack plugging and unplugging, Skype not usable

My conclusion: there's some problematic interaction with the standard
kernels.

Does it make sense me to test groovy? It's kernel 5.8

alsa-ucm-conf 1.2.3 from Debian Bullseye and mainline kernel generic 5.8.13
eliminate garbling/crackling sound: plugging and un plugging the headset works
perfectly, Skype is working as expected.

Do you suggest me to do any more testing?

Should I file a new bug report against either the kernel or pulseaudio
or maybe the two of them?

I installed alsa-ucm-conf 1.2.3 from Debian and the last Ubuntu mainline kernel

This setup seems to fix the issue, however the test I did is too short
to confirm this work around.

2020-10-04 Thread Gabriele Tettamanzi
@Mathi
I have the same problem, I thought it was related to plugging/unplugging the
headset jack (see comment #28 and following ones).

Hui's and my opinion is the it's not alsa-ucm-conf related, therefore
this requires more analysis and a new bug report.

What you could do:
- to play with parameters in alsamixer (it does not work with me)
- to test a more recent mainline kernel (not tested yet)
- to install alsa-ucm-conf 1.2.3 from Debian (not tested yet)

Post your testing results please.

Ok thanks.

Last night I re installed from scratch Ubuntu 20.04.1 and I noted a
variation: to make the sound to work I needed to add your testing repo
and to do an upgrade. Previously I fixed the sound issue by simply
adding the two missing folders in ucm2 and ucm2/codecs for chtmax98090
sound card.

Agreed, your backport in 1.2.2 testingvis working as well as the 1.2.3 from
Debian Bullseye.

It definitively makes sense to submit the 1.2.2 testing to the Ubuntu
packagers.

Do I need to file a bug against Groovy same issue or is the 1.2.2 is
automatically included in Groovy too?

I'll check more in deep the crackles issue and if it's the case I'll
file new bug.

Thank you so much for your fix.

There's no sound recording difference within Debian 1.2.3 and yours
testing 1.2.2

I narrowed down the issue: it's coming along when plugging / unplugging
the headset jack while I'm running the recording piece of software.

I'm able to reproduce the issue on Audacity.

This issue makes web Skype unusable, the installed version of Zoom seems
to work of I plug the jack in before launching it.

[Bug 1871306] Re: No sound from internal card chtmax98090 Bay Trail QWAWKS

2020-09-24 Thread Gabriele Tettamanzi
The package involved is alsa-ucm-conf, version 1.2.2
It does not contain the UCM2 configuration files for the sound card
chtmax98090, which have been added upstream.
Because groovy has alsa-ucm-conf 1.2.2, the bug is applicable for 20.10 too.
In Debian unstable and testing is available alsa-ucm-conf 1.2.3, which contains
the missing UCM2 files.

[Bug 1871306] Re: No sound from internal card chtmax98090 Bay Trail QWAWKS

2020-09-22 Thread Gabriele Tettamanzi
I have a workaorund and a fix for this bug.
The bug is due to missing UCM2 folders and config files, which are now
available on git hub.

The missing folders are:
- /usr/share/alsa/ucm2/chtmax98090/ : it can be retrieved from
https://github.com/alsa-project/alsa-ucm-conf/tree/master/ucm2/chtmax98090

- /usr/share/ucm2/codecs/max98090/ : it can be retrived from
https://github.com/alsa-project/alsa-ucm-
conf/tree/master/ucm2/codecs/max98090

After adding the above two folders and a reboot, the sound works fine.
Tested on Ubuntu 20.04.1

[Bug 1892716] [NEW] Slurm workload manger not build against PMIx for ppc64el architecture

2020-08-24 Thread Gabriele Förstner
Public bug reported:

On ppc64el SLURM nodes, the PMIx is not enabled:

srun --mpi=list
srun: MPI types are...
srun: openmpi
srun: pmi2
srun: none

The PMIx libraries are all installed and available, but the slurm package has
been configured using the x86_64 library PATH - which is unavailable for
ppc64el architectures- instead of using the DEB_HOST_MULTIARCH variable:

Here the relevant lines of the debian/rules file:

override_dh_auto_configure:
dh_auto_configure -- --sysconfdir=/etc/slurm-llnl --with-munge
--enable-pam --without-rpath --disable-debug --enable-multiple-slurmd
--with-pmix=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/pmix $(ENABLEDEPRECATED)
dh_auto_configure --builddirectory build-emulator --
-sysconfdir=/etc/slurm-llnl --with-munge --enable-pam --without-rpath
--disable-debug --enable-front-end --enable-multiple-slurmd
--with-pmix=/usr/lib/$(DEB_HOST_MULTIARCH)/pmix $(ENABLEDEPRECATED)

The following dh_auto_configure works and enables pmix:

override_dh_auto_configure:
dh_auto_configure -- --sysconfdir=/etc/slurm-llnl --with-munge
--enable-pam --without-rpath --disable-debug --enable-multiple-slurmd
--with-pmix=/usr/lib/$(DEB_HOST_MULTIARCH)/pmix $(ENABLEDEPRECATED)
dh_auto_configure --builddirectory build-emulator --
-sysconfdir=/etc/slurm-llnl --with-munge --enable-pam --without-rpath
--disable-debug --enable-front-end --enable-multiple-slurmd
--with-pmix=/usr/lib/$(DEB_HOST_MULTIARCH)/pmix $(ENABLEDEPRECATED)

The sound card is detected: I see it in the Plasma Widget, in pavucontrol, in

I tried and add in /usr/share/alsa/ucm/chtmax98090/ the old style use case
config files: no success.
I tried and unmute speakers left and right in alsamixer: no success.

I rapidly tested Ubuntu Mate Focal fresh install: I had exactly the same
  issue.

I'm running on the same rig Debian Bullseye, kernel 5.4: sound card
output and input are both working perfectly - I noticed that in Kubuntu
alsamixer Kubuntu when I open it I have an entry HDA IntelPCH (the HDMI

[Bug 1869142] Re: marco adds extra border on google chrome when maximize

2020-04-05 Thread gabriele
** Description changed:

Basically, Marco adds window decorations to google chrome even if the
option "use the system borders" is disabled. A temporary workaround is
to re-enable from chrome (right click to the top) to use system
decoration, and then deselect it again, but that until you maximize and
  then unmaximize the window.
+
+ I noted that it happens (in particular) when I move the chrome windows
+ toward a screen edge and the feature "window snapping" is activated.

[Bug 1849542] Re: Thunderbird empty after update to 19.10 - corrupted global-messages-db.sqlite

2020-01-10 Thread Gabriele Tozzi
I have a similar problem (see #1859043) but my my global-messages-
db.sqlite is not corrupted: it works fine on any Thunderbird <68.

Deleting it means losing useful data like contacts, threads, etc… so it
really isn't a solution or workaround. I am assuming people is using
Thunderbird to manage their own data and not to lose it.

The result is a completely unusable thunderbird: the main window opens,
but there are no messages and it is not possible to open any secondary

Downgrading to 1.60 (from disco) solves this issue.

Bug 1590984 - Use poll() instead of select() in WebRTC code r=drno

### ESR Uplift Approval Request
* **If this is not a sec:{high, crit} bug, please state case for ESR
consideration**: This fixes a crash that can easily occur when using WebRTC.
* **User impact if declined**: Firefox may crash when using WebRTC; this will
happen independently of the user since it's triggered by the file descriptor
numbers used by the WebRTC devices (camera, microphone, etc...).
* **Fix Landed on Version**: 72
* **Risk to taking this patch**: Low
* **Why is the change risky/not risky? (and alternatives if risky)**: The fix
is small and almost mechanical and the patch has been in nightly and then beta
for two months now without causing regressions.
* **String or UUID changes made by this patch**: None

2019-10-29 Thread Gabriele Svelto
Created attachment 9104623
Bug 1590984 - Use poll() instead of select() in WebRTC code r=drno

The use of select() was leading to crashes when the file descriptor value was
larger than FD_SETSIZE. Recent versions of glibc have checks in the FD_CLR(),
FD_SET() and FD_ISSET() macros that will abort() the program instead of doing
an out-of-bounds access. poll() doesn't have limitations on the file
descriptor values and provides behavior that is otherwise identical to
select() thus solving the problem.

[Bug 1849615] Re: WebRTC-related crashes

2019-10-24 Thread Gabriele Svelto
Nevermind, this isn't WebRTC-specific and not even Ubuntu-specific since
I could find Debian instances of it. It's caused by select() being used
instead of more modern methods that don't have limits on the file
descriptor values you pass to them. Sorry for the noise.

I did some further digging and this isn't a WebRTC-specific issue though
it tends to crash WebRTC code more often than other code.

See this for another similar crash in code we don't control (and which
might also be using select() and thus triggering the safety check):

[Bug 1849615] [NEW] WebRTC-related crashes

2019-10-24 Thread Gabriele Svelto
Public bug reported:

In Mozilla we've detected a spike of crashes in the Ubuntu-packaged
version of Firefox 69.0.x. All the crashes are happening in the WebRTC
code and specifically libc's FD_SET, FD_CLR and FD_ISSET range-checking
safety is causing an abort. Is it possible that Firefox is being built
with a FD_SETSIZE value that's different from what's used in libc?

[Bug 1848180] [NEW] LVM initrd fails to activate btrfs multidevice root

2019-10-15 Thread Gabriele Tozzi
Public bug reported:

I have two lvm volumes (/dev/mapper/raid-btrfs and /dev/mapper/fast-
btrfs) in two different volume groups. I have created a btrfs (raid1)
filesystem on top of them and that's my root filesystem.

If i define it by UUID in the root= kernel argument, i just hit bug
#1574333. Forcing my root to "/dev/mapper/fast-btrfs" by defining
GRUB_DEVICE in /etc/default/grub works around that bug.

The problem now is that initrd is only activating the device given as
root= argument, leaving the other inactive; consequently the btrfs mount
fails to find its second device and the system fails to boot giving up
at initramfs prompt.

Manually adding a line to activate also 2nd device at the bottom of
/usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top/lvm2 and rebuilding the
initramfs works around this issue too, but i suppose my mods will be
washed away by next package upgrade.

Here is the result:
> activate "$ROOT"
> activate "$resume"
> activate "/dev/mapper/raid-btrfs"

Proposed solution:
I understand this is an uncommon setup and correctly handling multidevice LVM
roots is complicated, please just add a configuration option to manually
define/append the list of volume groups to be activated at initrd time.

[Bug 1845205] [NEW] Cannot submit crash reports from firefox' "this tab crashed" page

2019-09-24 Thread Gabriele Svelto
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

- Launch firefox
- Enter "about:crashcontent" in the URL bar
- Upon hitting return, the tab should crash and display the "This tab just
crashed" page
- Ensure that the checkmark to send the crash report is ticked
- Add a comment (anything will do, a non-empty comment ensures that the crash
is accepted by Mozilla crash reporting back-end)
- Click on "Restore this tab"
- Go to the "about:crashes" page

Expected behaviour:

In the "about:crashes" page the crash is displayed among the submitted
crash reports, showing that the crash report was indeed submitted
correctly.

Actual behaviour:

The crash appears among the unsubmitted crashes.

This bug is specific to the packaged version of Firefox that comes with
Ubuntu. I've tried reproducing using Mozilla's builds and crash
submission works correctly there. See this bug
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1583247 on Mozilla's
tracker regarding this behaviour. In Mozilla we noticed the issue
because we've started properly processing crash reports coming from
Ubuntu and tab crashes were strangely few. Feel free to contact me
directly at gsve...@mozilla.com about this issue since I'm in charge of
Firefox crash reporting machinery.

Hey there, same problem here, audio has strange glitches, maybe we could
reopen this issue? Both a collegue and I bought this same laptop and we
are both affected by this issue, even on recent kernel builds.

[Bug 1796111] [NEW] Support sub-folder creation

2018-10-04 Thread Gabriele Tozzi
Public bug reported:

This nice and very useful tool has the ability to move the file to a new
folder while renaming it: just add a / in the new file name.

Anyway, the new path will need to be exiting.

It would be nice to have a switch for automatic creation of needed
folders (mkdir -p) while renaming.
