2013-05-02 Thread Gary Trakhman
This is a serious problem, it can affect other devices on the network
while appearing to work fine for the machine running it. It caused me
to buy and return 2 wifi routers and spend 20 hours of time debugging
the situation.

Switching to b43 on 13.04 resolved the network issues on my dell
latitude e6510, but it has the familiar suspend/resume problem (reload
the module as a workaround).

[Bug 530432] Re: suspend with sd card inserted fails to suspend, hangs, and loses USB

2010-04-29 Thread Gary Trakhman
It's related to this bug that I've had for a while now since 2.6.32
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14782

I did a git-bisect and everything, not sure what's going on in kernel-
land about it, but it took me a couple months to figure out it was
related to the SD card!

[Bug 525446] [NEW] typing () followed by enter causes x.org to hang

2010-02-21 Thread Gary Trakhman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg

Running lucid with 2.6.31 karmic kernel on lenovo sl300, (higher gives me
suspend problems)
xorg-edgers intel driver

Very odd, I'm not an idiot, I swear. I was trying to type "class
wut(1): " in a python interpreter, hit enter, and X hung. Then I kept
rebooting and trying it with ":", worked fine. "):" fine, "1):" fine,
"(1):" broken, "(1)" broken, "(1" fine. "()" broken. I don't even know
how this is possible. Tried it with multiple kernels, and all of a
sudden it's not happening after 5 or so reboots. I couldn't switch to a
VT or restart without holding the power button, yet system was actually
not hung (saw sparse disk i/o) , just X server.

Works fine in any VT.

I'm also running xorg-edgers intel driver...

My speculation is some weird problem with the xorg keyboard driver?

[Bug 379201] Re: NetworkManager attempts to connect to unavailable previously connected network when resuming from suspend

2010-01-10 Thread Gary Trakhman
It's not a networkmanager bug

Networkmanager gets its list of connections from the driver, and the
driver may report the old one to exist when in fact it doesn't. This is
a bug with specific drivers i think.

2009-12-10 Thread Gary Trakhman
Yes, it hangs with 020632-generic mainline kernel, and is fine with
2.6.31-ubuntu14. Oddly enough, it works fine while at the GDM prompt.
It is only after gnome login that it will hang. I considered a compiz
issue, disabled it, no effect.

2.6.32-7 released, still hangs on second suspend. 2.6.31-14 works
great. This may be specific to SL series lenovo? Kernel folks have
made a lot of changes to suspend code in 2.6.32.

[Bug 492684] [NEW] suspend hangs system with any 2.6.32 kernel

2009-12-04 Thread Gary Trakhman
Public bug reported:

Karmic worked fine, since I've started testing lucid, I've had problems
with 2.6.32. First suspend is usually ok. Second will hang the laptop
and requires hard reboot. I've tried the ubuntu linux-image-generic,
and zen-kernel as well through multiple rc's of 2.6.32 hoping it would
get fixed. With zen-kernel, tuxonice would have the same problems in
2.6.32. Currently running stock linux-image-generic.

[Bug 417244] Re: intel atom raid 1 SATA/IDE freezes

2009-09-07 Thread Gary Trakhman
This keeps happening when I write to the RAID, and I have noticed that I
can get it to complete the resync just fine in single-user mode, have
done this twice now. Next will attempt to turn off SMP and
hyperthreading. Using the server kernel image at the moment.

[Bug 362047] Re: [Dell M1330] Hard drive spins down often, even on AC power

2009-09-01 Thread Gary Trakhman
I'm having same behaviour as Martin on karmic with my thinkpad sl300.
Very annoying, especially when watching movies. The disk will spin down
and some seconds of video data will be trashed. g-p-m seems to be set
correctly.

[Bug 417244] [NEW] intel atom raid 1 SATA/IDE freezes

2009-08-21 Thread Gary Trakhman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mdadm

This is driving me up the wall. Please help me debug this.

Steps I have taken:
Tried karmic 64, jaunty 32-bit, jaunty 64-bit, no difference

dg945gclf2 with atom 330 dual-core 1.6Ghz and 1Gb ocz ddr2 667
Hard drive configuration:
60Gb Deskstar on parallel IDE, CD-Rom attached as slave, but power unplugged
320Gb Seagate 7200.10 on SATA, ~250 Gb ext4 as /, 4Gb swap

The 60Gb is configured as a raid 1 member with a logical partition of
equal size on the 7200.10 using the server installer. No data is
written, just initialized as ext4.

During raid sync, at random points system will completely freeze and
requires a reboot. Can't do anything. Can't numlock, can't change VT.
Happens at a different place each time. Once it even went to 98% or so
of the sync but never finished.

System is rock-stable otherwise, ran p6burn x 4 for hours with /dev/md0
stopped.

Currently running jaunty i386 server.

it might be nice to increase the hotkey polling Hz to about 20 or so
near the end of the .c file. The default is 5Hz, feels too slow to

not really sure, but I've got backtraces with debugging symbols if you
wanna check it out. empathy was crashing with
gail_tree_view_ref_child(). Pidgin has been stable for me for a day or
so, and I've switched to kde until this is fixed. Still using pidgin
however, and it seems fine. The nm-applet crash seems to be in gail as
well.

Bug #395210 empathy crashes in gail_tree_view_ref_child()
Bug #395340 pidgin crashes in IA__g_slice_free_chain_with_offset()

[Bug 395198] [NEW] nm-applet crashes when looking at it funny and so do other apps.

2009-07-03 Thread Gary Trakhman
Public bug reported:

This happens with network-manager, pidgin and others in the current
karmic packages. I've been having this problem for about 1 week. Just
sporadically using the interface will cause it to crash. In pidgin, an
incoming message will cause a crash. I think it's gtk related. I will
attach more info next time it crashes.

[Bug 394715] [NEW] transmission and other gtk apps segfault when opening dialogs sporadically

2009-07-02 Thread Gary Trakhman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: transmission

I've been having this problem for a few weeks with gtk apps on karmic.
Seems like pidgin isn't doing it anymore, but recently, nm-applet and
transmission have been giving me trouble. If I open the preferences
pane, it'll just segfault with a probability of about 0.5.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64

DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.10
ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/transmission

For once today, this behavior did not occur for me. Using 2.6.30-9 with
karmic.

[Bug 379201] Re: NetworkManager attempts to connect to unavailable previously connected network when resuming from suspend

2009-06-12 Thread Gary Trakhman
I was using madwifi before, and i didn't have this problem. One
cumbersome workaround is to edit the pm-utils scripts to unload and
reload the ath5k module on resume. I did something similar for madwifi
for a different issue.

[Bug 379201] Re: NetworkManager attempts to connect to unavailable previously connected network when resuming from suspend

2009-06-12 Thread Gary Trakhman
This happened to me on intrepid/jaunty/karmic when I switched to the
ath5k driver. I have this problem right now. I don't think it's
networkmanager's fault. It seems the previous connected network shows
up in the scanning list before real networks do, and then it doesn't go
away. I'm on a thinkpad sl300 with atheros ar5007EG, 242x, running
2.6.30-8.

Re: [Bug 281526] Re: Firefox freezes with 100% CPU after resuming from suspend

2009-05-08 Thread Gary Trakhman
seems to not be a problem anymore for me. I've been using karmic
repos. firefox-3.0.10, newest intel driver and mesa from xorg-edgers.

[Bug 347277] [NEW] Firefox totally slow after suspend/resume, have to restart it

2009-03-23 Thread Gary Trakhman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

Running Thinkpad SL300 with current jaunty updates. I've been having
this behavior for a few weeks, I think. I don't remember when it
started. But every time I suspend/resume my laptop, when it comes back
up everything is fine except the firefox gui is totally slow and
unresponsive.

firefox:
  Installed: 3.0.7+nobinonly-0ubuntu1

[Bug 131094] Re: Heavy Disk I/O harms desktop responsiveness

2009-03-22 Thread Gary Trakhman
I thought I was affected by this bug, but as it turns out, it was
another one. My swap file had gone missing due to an invalid UUID,
which is another bug. This caused unresponsiveness when ram got filled
up. Maybe others have this problem.

[Bug 311716] Re: The slider brightness Applet has value inverted after the last update (2.6.27-11)

2009-02-05 Thread Gary Trakhman
Still doesn't do anything for the thinkpad SL300, sl400, sl500, and all
ideapads. Sl300 can't load thinkpad-acpi b/c the firmware is ideapad-
based.

[Bug 311716] Re: The slider brightness Applet has value inverted after the last update (2.6.27-11)

2009-01-29 Thread Gary Trakhman
I read somewhere it was possible to get the function of the keys back by
using an older kernel. Is there anyway to tell acpi to get its hands
off the brightness keys and video brightness without turning off acpi
completely? I don't care if gnome can't control my brightness, I just
want the convenience of being able to use the keys properly.

latest 2.6.28-5 brings back the reversed keys, whereas in 2.6.28-4 and
before I couldn't do anything brightness related once the kernel boots.

this is a duplicate of my bug 301524. See the upstream tracked bugs.
Apparently, people didn't have this problem in 7.10, but they did in
8.04. What's changed in the kernel since then? video.c?
