Re: [Bug 144006] Re: CC-by-sa reported as non-free
CC-by-sa is considered free for artistic content by the FSF, and the packages listed as non-free by vrms contains icons et similia. Re: [Bug 144006] Re: CC-by-sa reported as non-free
CC-by-sa it's free for ubuntu (there was a discussion on the gobuntu-devel mailing list). I know that vrms is a debian project, so that it's impossible for us to send a patch upstream (unless debian itself decide that older CC-by-sa licences are indeed free), but ubuntu can do and apply a patch to the vrms packet without sending it to upstream. It's annoying to use vrms and see a list of debian-non-free packages installed on an ubuntu system: on an ubuntu system I want vrms to list packages considered non-free by ubuntu, not debian. -- CC-by-sa reported as non-free https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/144006 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 286326] [NEW] some depends of ubuntu-desktop are listed as applications
Public bug reported: First of all, I'm referring to up-to-date Intrepid: ubuntu-desktop 1.121 and app-install-data 0.6.10. Depends of ubuntu-desktop cannot be removed from ubuntu and are installed by default by live-cd installer or update-manager; so, since gnome-app-install cannot manipulate tham (I mean: install or remove), they shouldn't be listed as applications in app-install-data. The average user list of installed applications tends to be composed nearly exclusively of those applications; this is very annoing. Here is a _complete_ list of the applications that are abstractions of ubuntu-desktop's depends (and the packages that they abstract): * Archive Manager (file-roller) * Calculator (gcalctool) * Character Map (gucharmap) * Configuration Editor (gconf-editor) * Dictionary, Disk Usage Analyzer, Floppy Formatter, System Log (gnome-utils) * Document Viewer (evince) * GDebi Package Installer (gdebi) * GStreamer Dirac Video Plugin (gstreamer0.10-schroedinger) * Hardware Testing (hwtest-gtk) * Image Viewer (eog) * Language Support (language-selector) * Manage Print Jobs, Printing (system-config-printer-gnome) * Menu Editor (gnome-menus) * Network Tools (gnome-nettool) * Passwords and Encryption Keys (seahorse) * Services, Shared Folders, Time and Date, Users and Groups (gnome-system-tools) * Software Sources (software-properties-gtk) * Sound Recorder, Volume Control (gnome-media) * Synaptic Package Manager (synaptic) * System Cleaner (system-cleaner-gtk) * System Monitor (gnome-system-monitor) * Terminal (gnome-terminal) * Text Editor (gedit) * Update Manager (update-manager) Some depends are even represented by multiple (useless) applications! So, I think that these applications should be removed from app- install-data for the sake of clarity. ** Affects: app-install-data-ubuntu (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- some depends of ubuntu-desktop are listed as applications https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/286326 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 278187] Re: some packages should be recomended dependencies
On my system they're not installed because of gnome-desktop-environment (I don't have it installed; in fact, I've never have it installed in all of my installations of ubuntu), but only because of ubuntu-desktop. gnome-utils and seahorse appears as applications in the list of gnome-app-install, but they're not removable because they're depends. Since applications should _always_ be removable using gnome-app-install, I see two options: 1. make gnome-utils and seahorse only recommends of ubuntu-desktop (and of gnome-desktop-environment); or 2. remove them from the list of applications of gnome-app-install. -- some packages should be recomended dependencies https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/278187 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

So, random passes are nearly _five_ times slower than other passes while erasing flash devices... Please note that this is the same for HDDs: with different times, for course, but the difference can be even bigger (near an order of magnitude on my systems). Tested on Intrepid beta, Hardy and (if I recall correctly) Gutsy. Feisty (again, if I recall correctly) worked just right. ** Affects: coreutils (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- shred is very slow https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/279598 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 201676] Re: gnome-pilot and ubuntu-desktop
gnome-pilot isn't directly a dependency of ubuntu-desktop: ubuntu- desktop depends on gnome-pilot-conduits that, in turns, depends on gnome-pilot. As of Intrepid, gnome-pilot-conduits was demoted from dependency to recomended dependency in ubuntu-desktop, but PalmOS Devices cannot be removed using gnome-app-install; Why? Because PalmOS Devices (that is, an application in gnome-app-install) refers to gnome-pilot; but gnome-pilot is a dependency of gnome-pilot-conduits that, in turns, is a recomended dependency of ubuntu-desktop; so, software depends on PalmOS Devices and it cannot be removed (in gnome-app-install). Some options to fix this: 1. replace the recomended dependency of gnome-pilot-conduits in ubuntu-desktop with gnome-pilot; or 2. make the PalmOS Devices application refers to gnome-pilot-conduits instead of gnome-pilot. -- gnome-pilot and ubuntu-desktop https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/201676 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 278040] [NEW] Cannot remove some default-installed applications
Public bug reported: Some applications that should be removable using gnome-app-install (because they're useless to me and _nothing_ depends on them), aren't. They are (but I'm not sure that they're limited to): 1. Bluetooth Analyzer (bluez-gnome) 2. Evolution Mail and Calendar (evolution) 3. PalmOS Devices (gnome-pilot) 4. Pidgin Internet Messenger (pidgin) All of them are recomended dependency of ubuntu-desktop (except gnome- pilot, that is installed via gnome-pilot-conduits) just like f-spot but, unlike that, they cannot be removed; I have removed them manually (using synaptic) and I've got no problems. All version of gnome-app-install (and, of cource, gnome-app-install- data-ubuntu) that I've used are buggy (Hardy stable and Intrepid beta). ** Affects: app-install-data-ubuntu (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Cannot remove some default-installed applications https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/278040 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 278040] Re: Cannot remove some default-installed applications
I'm not sure what you're trying to say. I wasn't trying to remove packages directly: I was trying to remove application, instead. However, I've already listed all the applications and packages that gave me problems. There is nothig that triggers this behaviour: If you install a fresh copy of ubuntu (lets say Hardy, but it's not limited to Hardy) and you try to remove, lets say, Bluetooth Analyzer using gnome-app-install, you cannot. [Bug 278040] Re: Cannot remove some default-installed applications
I've found the source of the bug for the Pidgin Internet Messenger application (pidgin package): pidgin and pidgin-otr are (recomended) dependency of ubuntu-desktop; gnome-app-install fails to remove Pidgin Internet Messenger because pidgin is a dependency of pidgin-otr. I bet that we can fix the bug (for Pidgin Internet Messenger) if: 1. the recomended dependency of pidgin-otr is removed from ubuntu-desktop; 2. the dependency of pidgin is removed from pidgin-otr; 3. the dependency of pidgin-otr is added to pidgin. -- Cannot remove some default-installed applications https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/278040 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 278169] [NEW] gnome-utils appears as multiple applications
Public bug reported: Dictionary, Disk Usage Analyzer, Floppy Formatter and System Log are provided by the same unbreakable and indivisible package (gnome-utils). They all have the same description (they differ only in the name) and that description enumerates all of them; since gnome-app-install is able to search into the description, they should be merged into a single entity for the sake of clarity. ** Affects: app-install-data-ubuntu (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- gnome-utils appears as multiple applications https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/278169 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 278187] [NEW] some packages should be recomended dependencies
Public bug reported: gnome-utils and seahorse are dependencies of ubuntu-desktop, so they're installed by default and cannot be removed using gnome-app-install. Since they're useless to me, why don't make them only _recomended_ dependencies (so that they're installed by default but can be removed using gnome-app-install)? ** Affects: ubuntu-meta (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- some packages should be recomended dependencies https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/278187 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 144006] Re: CC-by-sa reported as non-free
GNU FDL is DFSG free provided the invariant section clauses are not used. Yes, but e.g. autoconf-doc uses the FDL and is still list as non-free; this is because, as long as I know, software from FSF uses the FDL entirely (invariant sections included). -- CC-by-sa reported as non-free https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/144006 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 144006] Re: CC-by-sa reported as non-free
I also see autoconf-doc, gdb-doc, manpages-posix, manpages-posix-dev and make-doc between non-free packages, is it right? It sounds strange. Forgive me for the delay, please. Well, vrms is a debian software, so even packages with the GNU FDL are listed as non-free (such as autoconf-doc, for example). In the perspective that the ubuntu freeness policy is (or will be) based on the FSF's one, I think that this package needs a heavy effort for ubuntization. -- CC-by-sa reported as non-free https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/144006 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
