[Bug 2062951] Re: Random flickering with Intel i915 on Linux 6.8 (Ubuntu 24.04)

2024-06-01 Thread George-t
I recently upgraded from 22.04 to 24.04 (through v23.10 via do-release-
upgrade) and now have symptoms similar to those described (flickering of
windows, especially when moving them and I also get screen lockup when
trying to dock a window to top/sides of desktop). Running two displays
on my dell laptop, one via HDMI and the internal as well.

[Bug 2059341] [NEW] Xorg freeze

2024-03-27 Thread George Hollis
Public bug reported:

I have a server running ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS and the system boots fine and all
the hardware is detected, but the HDMI output is freezing on the line: "r8169
000:03:00.0 emp3s0: renamed from eth0". I have managed to get past this
previously by adding "nomodeset" to the GRUB boot options but I need the
graphics driver for hardware transcoding as that's its main use so need to try
and think of another way around this issue. I can ssh into the server fine, it
seems to be working fine otherwise. I've seen that it might be when the igpu

[Bug 2052495] Re: [MIR] wsl-pro-service

2024-03-27 Thread George-Andrei Iosif
I reviewed `wsl-pro-service` `0.1.1` as checked into Noble. This shouldn't be
considered a full audit but rather a quick gauge of maintainability. For the
sake of completeness, this review will also mention findings reported in
previous GitHub issues and Launchpad comments.

Ubuntu Pro for WSL (abbreviated UP4W) is a set of applications to manage Ubuntu
WSL instances, grant them Pro status, orchestrate instances from Landscape and
manage their lifecycle. It is mostly used in corporate environments.

A user can perform with the UP4W codebase the following steps:
1. Install the "Ubuntu Pro for WSL" from the Microsoft Store
2. Using the minimalist UI or the Windows Registry to attach an Ubuntu Pro token
3. Registering the WSL instances in Ubuntu Pro and Landscape
4. Verifying the status of the Ubuntu Pro token by using the `pro` client
inside the WSL instance, the Landscape client, or the Windows UP4W GUI.

Useful resources to understand the bigger picture are [the landing
page](https://ubuntu.com/desktop/wsl),
[repository](https://github.com/canonical/ubuntu-pro-for-wsl), [public
documentation](https://canonical-ubuntu-pro-for-wsl.readthedocs-hosted.com/en/la
test/#), and Canonical-specific specifications (WS0{25,27,28,31}).

The Windows agent can be installed on Windows via [the Microsoft
Store](https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9pdxgncfsczv?rtc=1=fr-ch=CH). It
achieves the Windows-specific tasks of the UP4W infrastructure (such as getting
the subscription status from the Microsoft Store and setting the registries'
values), but will not be covered in this review. [Its
implementation](https://github.com/canonical/ubuntu-pro-for-wsl/tree/main/window
s-agent) can also be found on GitHub.

`wsl-pro-service` is a component of the UP4W Windows and Ubuntu infrastructure
owned by the Desktop team. It is meant to be a bridge between the `ubuntu-wsl`
API (interfacing the Windows host with the Ubuntu WSL instance). It is
implemented with a `systemd` service and a minimalistic CLI tool for Bash
completion and version retrieval.

The upstream codebase is in [the `wsl-pro-service` folder of the aforementioned
repository](https://github.com/canonical/ubuntu-pro-for-wsl/tree/main/wsl-pro-se
rvice).

- CVE History
 - As this is new software (still in testing), there is no CVE assigned to it.
- Build-Depends
 - The build process uses only the Debian toolchain, `debhelper` extensions for
Go and `apport` crash reporting, and the Go toolchain.
- Other dependencies
 - The relevant Debian dependencies used when operating the service are:
  - `ubuntu-advantage-tools`, which is required for its Ubuntu Pro CLI client;
and
  - An optional `landscape-client`.
 - The package vendors Go dependencies, which violate the Debian policy.
  - These are updated by the upstream using a GHA called
`update-workspace-dependencies`, which is integrated into the
`auto-updates.yaml` workflow.
  - In addition, the repository has GitHub's Dependabot set.
- pre/post inst/rm scripts
 - The scripts are standard, as generated by `dh_installsystemd`.
- init scripts
 - N/A
- systemd units
 - There is a `systemd` unit called `wsl-pro-service` that runs
`/usr/libexec/wsl-pro-service -vv` as `root`.
 - The service also leverages multiple `systemd` configuration directives to
confine itself as much as possible.
- dbus services
 - N/A
- setuid binaries
 - N/A
- binaries in PATH
 - N/A
- sudo fragments
 - N/A
- polkit files
 - N/A
- udev rules
 - N/A
- unit tests / autopkgtests
 - Each Go module is tested accordingly.
 - The testing coverage is reported by
[Codecov](https://app.codecov.io/gh/canonical/ubuntu-pro-for-wsl) to be 87%.
 - These tests are also integrated into `autopkgtests`.
- cron jobs
 - N/A
- Build logs
 - N/A

- Processes spawned
 - Because of the lack of other IPC methods with other involved binaries, the
service delegates operations to other binaries:
  - `pro` for attaching and detaching Ubuntu Pro tokens;
  - `wslinfo` for getting information about the WSl instance;
  - `landscape-config` for manipulating the Landscape configuration; and
  - `wslpath` for Windows-Linux path translations.
 - The binaries are specified by name, so they will be searched in `$PATH`. As
the service runs as `root`, there is no risk of path hijacking.
 - The commands are built by explicitly specifying the executables (hard-coded)
and their arguments. No instance of command injection was found during this
review.
- Memory management
 - N/A
- File IO
 - The service operates with the following files:
  - `/etc/os-release` for obtaining the OS release;
  - `/etc/resolve.conf` for obtaining the configured DNS server;
  - `/proc/net/route` for getting the default gateway;
  - `/etc/landscape/client.conf` as the Landscape configuration file;
  - `/etc/landscape/client.conf.new` as the temporary Landscape configuration
file;
  - `$USER_PROFILE/.address` for the address (`:`) of the gRPC
server created by [the Windows

[Bug 2052495] Re: [MIR] wsl-pro-service

2024-02-29 Thread George-Andrei Iosif
Hi,

As multiple security concerns appeared when performing the security review of
this package, I had a discussion with Jean and Didier from the owning team. We
concluded that reporting these issues before offering the final MIR report
would be best. This is because no user is affected (as the package is still in
beta), and transparency will catalyse the fixes.

The concerns found are as follows:

1. Insecure gRPC communication: Because
[`insecure.NewCredentials()`](https://pkg.go.dev/google.golang.org/grpc@v1.62.0/
credentials/insecure) is used in `internal/controlstream/session.go`, the
created gRPC connections are unencrypted and unauthenticated. A malicious
unprivileged user could make the agent connect the host to a rogue Landscape
server, leading to command execution. As discussed with Didier, encryption
seems unfeasible due to Windows Defender. A mitigation here will involve
authentication (possibly with certificates), ensuring that the communication of
the Ubuntu agent will occur only with the trusted Windows service.
2. Information leak in the temporary Landscape configuration file:
`/etc/landscape/client.conf.new` is a temporary file created by the Ubuntu
service in `internal/system/landscape.go` to store the Landscape configuration.
This file can also store sensitive information such as the account-wide
registration key, `registration_key`. This could lead to auto-registration of
any computer on the Landscape server. As a mitigation, the permission model
could be adjusted so that only the Landscape client can read it, not any user.
3. Command execution inside the Windows host: In `internal/system/system.go`,
all mounts are iterated and checked for communication with the 9P protocol
(which is standard for the second version of WSL). These drives are checked
with `s.findCmdExe()` to contain the `cmd.exe` executable. [As USB drives can
be made visible inside the WSL
instance](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/connect-usb), it may be
possible for a rogue `cmd.exe` executable file from a USB drive to be executed.
As discussed with Jean and Didier, this assumption should be manually validated.
4. Crash when using IPv6 domain servers: When detecting the address of the
Windows host, the agent checks if the NAT mode is used. If so, then the
`/etc/resolv.conf` file is parsed in search of `nameserver` entries. If the
entry is an IPv6 entry, the address will be concatenated with the port using
the `Sprintf` function. The result of this concatenation is ambiguous because
it's not using the `[]:` IPv6 notation, further connections may
crash. Please see [this](https://github.com/golang/go/issues/28308) proposed
Golang vet check.

Let me know if there is anything I can assist with in the meantime.

Many thanks!

[Bug 2047149] Re: [MIR] speexdsp

2024-02-27 Thread George-Andrei Iosif
I reviewed `speexdsp` `1.2.1-1` as checked into Noble. This shouldn't be
considered a full audit, but rather a quick gauge of maintainability that
involves static and dynamic analysis techniques.

Speex is an open-source and free audio compression codec specialised in
reproducing human speech (at low bitrates, ~2.1–32 kbit/s/channel). The
format is contained by other formats such as Ogg and Flash Video.

The format was replaced by its parent organisation, Xiph, with the Opus format.
Despite its obsoletion, the format is still supported by open-source software
such as [OpenWrt](https://github.com/openwrt/packages/issues/3747).

SpeexDSP is a library that includes the preprocessor, the acoustic echo
canceller, the jitter buffer, and the resample. It should be noted that
`speexdsp`'s code was part of main until Ubuntu 22.04. Before this release, the
codebase wasn't represented by a separate package but as part of the `speex`
package.

As SpeexDSP is a no-dependency library, it can be linked by programs with
`-lspeexdsp -lm`. Likewise, the simple input is the Speex-encoded data provided
by the program linking SpeexDSP. As the library is written in C but lacks OS
interaction, the codebase is prone to memory corruption issues that may
ultimately lead to code execution in the context of the parent process.

- CVE History
  - There is no CVE issued for SpeexDSP.
  - The Speex library, which is a sibling codebase as `speexdsp` was derived
from it, has two other CVEs in the past:
- CVE-2020-23904: Bogus stack buffer overflow that couldn't be validated by
the maintainers.
- CVE-2020-23903: Division by zero in `speexenc`, an example program
  - The Speex sibling codebase was also integrated into OSS-Fuzz.
- The integration definition files are placed in the
[Speex](https://gitlab.xiph.org/xiph/speex/-/blob/master/contrib/oss-fuzz/speexd
ec_fuzzer.cc) and
[OSS-Fuzz](https://github.com/google/oss-fuzz/tree/master/projects/speex)
repositories.
- [There are 13
bugs](https://bugs.chromium.org/p/oss-fuzz/issues/list?q=speex=1) between
2019 and 2021 that were maturely tackled by the maintainers.
- Build-Depends

- Memory management
  - The allocations take place for the members of the "states". These are
internal structures, with multiple fields, that contain the current state of a
given operation executed by the library.
  - The library defines wrappers over the standard memory management functions
in its `libspeexdsp/os_support.h` file. These wrapper functions are called in
all files where memory management is needed. The functions are properly called:
if the library allocates a lot of members in an initialisation function (for
example, `speex_preprocess_state_init`, which deals with allocating
`SpeexPreprocessState` structures), it also frees them in another specialised
function (to continue the preprocessor example, in the
`speex_preprocess_state_destroy` function).
- File IO
- Files are opened in:
  - `libspeexdsp/testecho.c`, which is a test program that has arguments
corresponding to the files to be opened and written; and
  - `libspeexdsp/mdf.c`, in which the 3 file paths are hard-coded (for example,
`aec_rec.sw`) and safely opened and written.
- Logging
  - The library logs static messages using functions defined in its
`libspeexdsp/os_support.h`, such as `speex_warning` and `speex_notify`.
  - It also exports a logging-related, speex_resampler_strerr, which deals with
converting a resampling status code into a string.

- Any significant cppcheck results
  - `cppcheck` was run again with additional flags to include the headers.
- No warning was generated.
- The `cppcheck.manual.txt` file was additionally generated.
- Any significant Coverity results
  - Coverity reported two issues with possible security impact. Both are in the
`update_filer` function from `resample.c`, but they were manually invalidated:
- `st->num_rate/st->den_rate` cannot trigger a division by zero.
`st->den_rate` is set in the function `speex_resampler_set_rate_frac` to the
value of one argument of `update_filter`. The argument is checked in the
prologue of the function to contain a value different from 0.

I have tried looking into the log files /var/log/dist-upgrade
main.log and apt.log. They are attached in a file.

I do have installed BRIGHTNESS CONTROLLER. That app is great. 2 thumbs up!
It prevents the light from my screen monitor to blow out the corneas in my eyes.
It is really a good app. I can't sing enough praises for it.

That might be was is holding up my upgrade. Please let me know.

[Bug 1862822] Re: init_on_alloc=1 causes big performance regression for ZFS

2022-05-06 Thread George Melikov
> It can be turned off during boot by using init_on_alloc=0 kernel
parameter. So any user who is affected by this performance issue can
mitigate that by disabling the hardening option, after considering its
possible consequences.

And one can find the root cause only by test and compare with other
kernel with init_on_alloc=0 by default, and iterate over all config
options and kernel changes.

Looks like another point to add into "someone's performance guide",
because it can't be mitigated easily via kernel interface changes from
module's side (AFAIK).

[Bug 1970605] [NEW] New video recording feature in new screenshot tool crashes

2022-04-27 Thread George D
Public bug reported:

The new screenshot tool with the video recording feature keeps crashing
every time I try to record a part of my screen or the whole screen. The
red timer shows up for less than a second on the top right of my screen
and then it disappears. I've tried restarting my PC but it doesn't fix
it. I have also tried OBS Studio to see if it crashes there, but it
doesn't. Only the new screenshot tool in Ubuntu 22.04 does it.
Screenshotting works fine, only the video recording has a problem.

[Bug 1963555] Re: xhci: Fix command ring abort, write all 64 bits to CRCR register.

2022-03-23 Thread Jonathan George
You referenced the original report, patch, and promotion to Linux Next for
review. The new information is that the resolution for the issue you referenced
was reviewed and promoted by Greg KH from Linux Next to his queue for Linus
https://lore.kernel.org/all/yayq%2fxdb%2fphss7%...@kroah.com/ in the production
kernel back on December 5, 2021. BTW it was accepted into Linus's mainline
queue with commit
https://lore.kernel.org/all/163872600645.987.7156724710444619664.pr-tracker-...@kernel.org/
 later that day.
Interestingly Greg mentioned merging these changes into the stable queue. If he
actually did so (I didn't notice where) it might help to make sure that 21.10
and 22.04 are immediately rebased to include the mainline included patches.

2022-03-22 Thread Jonathan George
I have also experienced this upstream bug which causes the USB hubs to
drop all attached devices. This means that external drive devices all
disappear almost as quickly as they appear. Basically it's a show
stopper since I can't use my USB attached data drives at all any more.

[Bug 1962021] Re: Make the deb package install the firefox snap

2022-03-04 Thread George Shuklin
I just found it completely trashed my system on install. The reason was
that I don't have snapd on my machine and installation attempted to
install it, causing X to crash and login to reject my account because
I'm not in 'nopasswdlogin' group.

Reverting back to firefox=97.0.1+build1-0ubuntu1 and setting "apt-mark
hold firefox" fixed the issue.

Re: [Bug 1954478] Re: Loaded Evolution found gjs repeat calls from ding.js overloaded memory froze 21.04

2021-12-10 Thread George
Hi Sergio;

I just run chown then ran chmod 777 so I
could edited the entire code *# out of the
ding.js. I am a very inexperienced
programmer. I studied C, C++, J++, Python
2 and 3 but I never built a file for a
program. I did desktop support for 20
years: Macintosh, PC -DOS, Windows form
2.0 to current windows 10, NTFS, OS/2,
Unix using SMIT, Linux, UBUNTU but I would
need many hour of troubleshooting to find
what the problem is with the current
Ding.js and why it constantly repeats the
call to run GJS in an infinite loop. The
program can still call ding.js but nothing
will run .

[Bug 1947860] Re: qemu-arm-static swallows the program name, and shifts all arguments left

2021-11-01 Thread George Yohng
Just a note: qemu-arm-static itself has nothing to do with it. I tried
older versions from hirsute and focal, and they exhibit the same
behaviour.

I can however confirm that the problem lies in the binfmt-P logic
handling - if I re-register qemu-arm-static manually without the
binfmt-P flag, it no longer swallows the first argument.

So my hunch is that whatever part of the kernel/anything passes the
arguments to qemu clearly is not binfmt-P aware, while qemu itself is,
thus the discrepancy.

[Bug 1875920] Re: New default %PROFILE_MEDIUM breaks root ceritificates which use SHA1

2021-09-08 Thread George
Is it the same issue I've hit with apt on Focal?

'apt update' fails on https://mirror.yandex.ru/ubuntu with:
Certificate verification failed: The certificate is NOT trusted. The
certificate chain uses insecure algorithm. Could not handshake: Error in the
certificate verification. [IP: 213.180.204.183 443]

The issue is supposedly fixed in GnuTLS 3.7.2.

Are there any plans to backport the fix to Focal?

[Bug 1841826] Re: Going to sleep instead of logging in while lid closed & external display

2021-05-29 Thread george holmes
It finally crashed, no video on suspend. I likely never reached 2 hrs.
before I shut down. So everything's similar to others it seems. I'll try
some things and see. If I can do anything I'll update. If it isn't
avoidable at least I understand it and won't waste too much time until I
see something posted.

[Bug 1841826] Re: Going to sleep instead of logging in while lid closed & external display

2021-05-29 Thread george holmes
So far this only occurs on the initial login after boot-up. Subsequent suspends
do not cause an issue. If I remove the laptop from the dock no issue, but now I
only have the laptop screen. The machine I'm using is a W530. For me this
appears to be an initial boot-up only issue, of course I still would like to
fix this. I can see where if used in lab environments it can be a serious
issue, especially if your remote.
I've seen Windows Sleep issues years ago, I haven't seen that many lately in
Windows. Certain code can cause sleep issues for this laptop, power managers
for one.

[Bug 1841826] Re: Going to sleep instead of logging in while lid closed & external display

2021-05-29 Thread george holmes
Lenovo 4338 Mini-Dock with Nvidia K1000M running Dual external monitors. Ubuntu
20.04 suspends after login as mentioned. This seemed to start after loading the
Nvidia 390 driver since the Nouveau driver did not work correctly. The video is
fine now and everything works fine except I login, the suspend occurs, I press
the dock power button and the machine runs normally.
My first assumption is its the video driver and I searched for suggested fixes
or alternative drivers. Not sure which way to go seems like a few Lenovo users
here are in the same place.

Same problem, my Medion Akoya S15449 keyboard doesn't work in any linux
distro i tried (Ubuntu 20.10,Pop os 20.10, Latest Arch Linux). It's not
been detected by lsusb or lspci. I think it's a driver issue.

I kindly ask to fix. Thank you.

[Bug 1907212] Re: Power consumption regression after upgrade to 20.10 5.8.0-31-generic

2020-12-20 Thread George Kapetanos
Those errors aren't printed when booting with hdmi connected. Attached
related dmesg output. Device `01:00.1` is suspended.

I can confirm from documentation about this laptop (Acer aspire
A715-71G) that the embedded display is connected to the intel GPU (eDP)
and the HDMI port is connected to the nvidia GPU, this must be the most
probable case on these laptops. Otherwise, maybe `01:00.1` device
wouldn't exist.

When booting with intel gpu only, HDMI interface isn't listed on xrandr
and HDMI screen has no input. This is supposed to happen as HDMI is
connected to nvidia and nvidia should be powered off, right? This also
happens with previous kernels and should not be related with this bug.

[Bug 1907212] Re: Power consumption regression after upgrade to 20.10 5.8.0-31-generic

2020-12-13 Thread George Kapetanos
With this kernel 5.8.0-35-generic #37~lp1907212+2 nvidia gpu is
successfully powered down, and idle power consumption was normal at 5-6
watt.

$ cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/:01:00.1/power/runtime_status
suspended
$ cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/:01:00.1/power/control
auto

On dmesg output there are a lot more `snd_hda_intel :01:00.1: can't
change power state from D3cold to D0 (config space inaccessible)`
complaints.

I also rebooted at nvidia performance mode, everything is normal but
`:01:00.1/power/runtime_status` is again suspended. I don't know if
it is supposed to be like this but with 5.8.0-31-generic when booting
with nvidia performance mode, `:01:00.1/power/runtime_status` is
active.

2020-12-11 Thread George Kapetanos
Dmesg after booting with provided kernel
https://people.canonical.com/~khfeng/lp1907212/

High power consumption remains, `echo :01:00.1 | sudo tee
/sys/module/snd_hda_intel/drivers/pci:snd_hda_intel/unbind` works.

[Bug 1907212] Re: Power consumption regression after upgrade to 20.10 5.8.0-31-generic

2020-12-08 Thread George Kapetanos
It was certainly working with 5.4.0-* from 20.04 at some time, I have
been mainly using dGPU for 2-3 months, and wouldn't have noticed any
regressions.

Strangely, I tested with 5.4.0-56-generic that remained after the
upgrade, and it is also not powering down dGPU.

20.10 didn't upgrade nvidia driver, I currently have 450.80.02

Something important I just noticed, at 19.10 and 20.04 nvidia vga and
related audio function devices weren't visible at lspci when booting
with intel gpu only, but after upgrading to 20.10 they are visible again
when booting with intel gpu. I suspect this mechanism was essential for
power management and it has changed with 20.10

This error on dmesg is relevant `snd_hda_intel :01:00.1: can't
change power state from D3cold to D0 (config space inaccessible)`, if I
unbind the nvidia audio device function with `echo :01:00.1 >
/sys/module/snd_hda_intel/drivers/pci:snd_hda_intel/unbind` power
consumption returns to normal, idling at 5-6 watts and runtime_status
becomes suspended.

[Bug 1907212] [NEW] Power consumption regression after upgrade to 20.10 5.8.0-31-generic

2020-12-08 Thread George Kapetanos
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Ubuntu 20.10 which ships kernel 5.8.0-31-generic,
battery life is considerably less and power consumption is about 10
watts more idle, (idling at 14-15 watts) using integrated graphics. This
is a hybrid GPU laptop Intel HD 630/GP107M, and based on past
experiences a possible cause is not powering off the dedicated GPU
completely while using the integrated.

Running sudo powertop --auto-tune doesn't eliminate the issue.

$ cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/:01:00.0/power/runtime_status
suspended
$ cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/:01:00.0/power/runtime_suspended_time
1815948

$ cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/:01:00.1/power/runtime_status
active
$ cat /sys/bus/pci/devices/:01:00.1/power/runtime_suspended_time
3827

Device "01:00.1 Audio device: NVIDIA Corporation GP107GL High Definition
Audio Controller" appears active, does this mean that the audio
subsystem of dGPU keeps it enabled, causing the 10-watt consumption?

[Bug 327362] Re: Some ISPs have .local domain which disables avahi-daemon

2020-11-28 Thread George
It seems not "fixed", but rather broken again in Ubuntu 20.04. My ISP
DNS servers respond to all ".local" queries with "127.0.0.200", and mDNS
just doesn't work in this case. Setting AVAHI_DAEMON_DETECT_LOCAL=0 does
not help. This is regression from 18.04 where mDNS worked fine with
default settings. And it's a pity, as mDNS is even more important after
NetBIOS/SMB1 retirement in 20.04. Should I post details here or start a
new issue?

Yes, the problem seems to be that Ubuntu bundles an abandonware remote
desktop package. I think the solution must be either to switch to a
package that's supported, or to start maintaining vino.

[Bug 1896384] [NEW] Error upgrading distro

2020-09-20 Thread Simon George
Public bug reported:

Trying to update system from 18.04 to 20.04 get error

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.

This was likely caused by:
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
Please use the tool 'ppa-purge' from the ppa-purge
package to remove software from a Launchpad PPA and
try the upgrade again.

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the
command 'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal. If
you want to investigate this yourself the log files in
'/var/log/dist-upgrade' will contain details about the upgrade.
Specifically, look at 'main.log' and 'apt.log'.

2020-08-31 Thread George Mihai Lazu
Hello Kai.
After several reboots this morning I was convinced the issue would no longer
reproduce. A couple minutes ago I have rebooted the system and the issue
reproduced, and I was unable to get the wifi card working even though I have
rebooted into Windows and back into Linux several times.

I have installed 5.9.0-rc1+ and tried rebooting again into Windows and
then Linux, this time successfully connecting to Wifi.

I will be updating you if the issue reproduces. Let me know if you need
any kind of logs that could help debug this issue.

2020-08-31 Thread George Mihai Lazu
Without testing the new kernel (I have 5.4.0-42-generic), I have tried
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=206411#c11, and then booted
to Windows, connected to a network, and powered off windows with the
"Fast Boot" option disabled in Power Options.

So far, with several reboots, the wifi works correctly. I will be
updating you if the issue reappears, but so far this seems to be a good
fix for me.

[Bug 1887776] Re: install of 20.04 from live USB with presistance for acer swift 5 i7 laptop dual boot with win10 failed at grub2 uefi

2020-07-18 Thread george
An update to the situation.

1. I reconfirmed the valid checksum of the ISO file used - yep all
good.

2. I erased and reformatted the USB used to restore the ISO file to, in the
failed install.
Note that it was a brand new 32GB device used in the first attempt.

3. Restored the ISO file to this device and did not set it up for persistence.
Just a straight bootable Live USB with Ubuntu 20.04.

4. Booted from the USB and went straight to the install stage.
Did not 'try' (or road test) the software (which I had previously).

5. Selected the option to wipe the partially completed, failed
install.

6. Magic happened, and the install worked successfully, as expected.
 Dual boot works as expected.

I am experiencing the same issue on a Lenovo Y530-15ICH. After BIOS update, the
issue seemed to no longer occur, however, it has now reappeared.
I am currently running BIOS version 8JCN53WW (Dec 2019), the latest.

[Bug 1879370] [NEW] Ubuntu dock glitches in auto-hide during setting

2020-05-18 Thread George Kapetanos
Public bug reported:

When "Auto-hide the Dock" is enabled and there is a maximized window, so
that the dock is hidden, upon moving the mouse to the bottom of the
screen, sometimes the dock glitches and initiates a hide-show animation
without stopping instead from showing up until the cursor moves away
from the dock.
