[Bug 1061947] Re: pcscd (auto)starting and permission troubles

2013-02-22 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

  Kernel: Linux 3.2.0-31-generic-pae (i686)
  Distribution : Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS
  Desktop : XFCE 4
  pcscd : 1.7.4-2ubuntu2

Information on how to start pcscd the right way is very limited. What I
found out after digging in for some days ... : --help and man pcscd are
not really helpful. After installing the packet, pcscd doesn't launch
  itself.

- After a while I found out there is a script /etc/init.d/pcscd (not
- mentioned in man) that is supposed to start the daemon at startup, but
- it has a line 'exit 0' in it preventing it from running ..., and a
- comment that is not very helpful for an average Linux user. So I think
- ok, it doesn't need to run at startup. Let me try to start the daemon
- myself ...
-
- And then troubles begin. It's damn easy to f*! it up: As I found out
- (and it took me a while, believe me...) running pcscd as simple user
- (not as root) hangs further well behaviour of the daemon. Only if you
- use it with the -x option, it will kill itself after 60s. Otherwise it
- just states it is already running but can't access a card reader.

hangs further well behaviour of the daemon. Only if you use it with the -x
option, it will kill itself after 60s. Otherwise it just states it is already
running but can't access a card reader.

So please, state clearly in man that you have to run pcscd as root to
start it as a daemon ! Or, alternatively, make the timeout of 60 s the
default so that you can get out of a blocking situation !

To check the good working of a card reader, pcsc_scan can be used. But
also here, if you start it as a regular user and pcscd isn't launched
yet, it launches the daemon for you, but hey, you are not root, so
bingo, blocked again. Luckily, it seams to be launched with the -x
option, so (only) after 60s you can try again, as root this time ... To
make the whole a little more confusing, once the daemon is running, you
can launch pcsc_scan as regular user without problem. But that's good, I
think, after all, since it means (as far as I understand) that
applications can get to the card reader without any augmented
  permissions.

So stays the question: how do I start the daemon the right way ? I haven't
found out yet ...
I could use /etc/init.d/pcscd and comment out the 'exit 0'. But I fear the
daemon will be very diligent to do its work, probing my machine for the heck of
it (as I noted running sudo pcscd -x -d and watching syslog).

Ideally, the daemon would be started on startup, with the right
permissions, but without it probing constantly for some reader. Then an
application that wants to get access to a reader, could 'tickle' the
daemon so it starts probing for some time, the application does its
thing, and the daemon stops probing when not needed anymore.

If someone knows this is possible, or if there is another preferred scenario,
I would be glad to hear about it ! Read also that a new version of pcscd will
use another mean to start automatically, but it's not supported (yet?) on
Ubuntu ?
Meanwhile, I hope this info can already help someone taming this one ...

  Bart.

  The technical stuff:

After boot (daemon not running) executing 'sudo pcsc_scan' -- it's working !
Information for reader is displayed. Even if after that (within 60s) I just
run
'pcsc_scan', the information is displayed again.

[Bug 1027531] Re: Installer crashed at the end

2013-02-22 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

I simply booted from the Kubuntu ISO image (using a USB stick). I ran
the installer, answered all the questions. I used JFS for the / and
/home partitions on a OCZ Vertex 4 SSD. The installer crashes at the
- end, and I have no damn idea why! This is a brand new machine, just

a solution, on one of the blogs(?), that I wanted to try, namely: change
the ui to Gnome2 rather than Unity.

[Bug 621231] Re: No recovery/single user mode! Cursor key in recovery menu starts splash screen

2013-02-22 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: plymouth

I can no longer boot into recovery mode a.k.a. single user mode. The
"Recovery Menu" appears where I want to "Drop to root shell prompt
without networking". But when I hit the cursor down key it immediately
shows the plymouth splash screen and I can no longer see the Recovery
Menu, making it effectively impossible to select the correct menu entry.
This happens on two different machines running lucid amd64.

It seems that the splash screen just hides the recovery menu. Pressing
Enter seems to select one of the menu entries, although I did not
succeed in trying to "blindly" select the root shell entry.

Booting into single user mode did work before, at least on 2010-07-27
when I did the last filesystem dump.

Words can't describe how much I hate this f***ing plymouth. First I had to
realize that it's impossible to see *all* boot messages the kernel and
init/upstart normally emit. As it seems I'm *forced* to get used to an oh so
cute splash screen. Then the endless hassles of making it at least use my
screens native resolution. And now I cannot boot my Unix systems into single
user mode? And all this for a "flicker free" booting experience? You're
kidding.

- Oh and I forgot: Documentation? What's that? Use the force, Luke! Or
what? Damn...

[Bug 732560] Re: iptables with geoip does not work

2013-02-22 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

  Ubuntu 10.10 64 bits

basically what i want to do is:
  # iptables -A FORWARD -m geoip --src-cc A1,A2 -j DROP

but i run into 2 issues with this:
  1) the tools are missing for downloading and converting (geoip_csv_iv0.pl)
the databases, and
- the link (http://jengelh.hopto.org/files/geoip/) named
- in the docu doesn't work, basically the tools are damn nasty to find.
+   the link (http://jengelh.hopto.org/files/geoip/) named
+  in the docu doesn't work, basically the tools are nasty to find.
  2) when i managed 1) it still doesn't work, and i get a:
- # iptables -A FORWARD -m geoip --src-cc A1,A2 -j DROP
- iptables: No chain/target/match by that name.
+   # iptables -A FORWARD -m geoip --src-cc A1,A2 -j DROP
+   iptables: No chain/target/match by that name.

  what i expect:
  1) tools are included with xtables-addons (geoip_download.sh and
geoip_csv_iv0.pl) or
- docu point to a link which contains those tools
+   docu point to a link which contains those tools
  2) this should just work perhaps after insmodding an ipt_geoip (and having
-the database files)
-
+    the database files)

  about 2):
I think there is no kernel (match) support:
  #cat /proc/net/ip_tables_matches
  state
  multiport
  udplite
  udp
- tcp
+ tcp
  icmp

  where geoip is missing
in /lib/modules is no ipt_geoip, or something which looks like it.

-
At the xtables support page ubuntu is listed in red (like many other
  distro's):
  http://xtables-addons.sourceforge.net/distro-support.php

-
Of course i can start the custom kernel/patching etc etc, but this is not
- what i seek (for long term).
+ what i seek (for long term).
  Please consider of fixing this.

This doesn't happen every time I go full-screen in a video though. But
in the last two days, it has happened twice. Last time was with
  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=saStFjCBQE0&feature=relmfu

I have previously had issues with my graphics card (an ATI Radeon 5700)
on the Natty beta, so it's possible that it may be related to the
graphics drivers. But for now I'm assigning it to firefox since that's
  the app it's happening in.

I've attached some Apport stuff about Firefox just in case.

[Bug 923509] Re: Windows jump around when moved between different sized screens.

2013-02-22 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

I have a dual screen (nVidia twinview) setup with two different sized
screens. I have a large screen on the left (primary) and a small screen
on the right (secondary). The small screen is at the bottom of the
workspace, so that there is an inaccessible region in the top right
corner of the workspace. Also I have two workspaces.

What happens is that compiz tries to stop the window leaving the screen
(correct behaviour), and if you drag if along the top of the workspace,
from the left screen to the right one it gets stuck at the edge.

Ok so far, but if you keep moving you mouse to the right, and then
*down* so that the window can now move onto the second screen it goes
pretty wrong. The window jumps much further to the right than the
pointer has travelled so that it is no longer under the pointer, but is
off the screen (on the second workspace!)

- Pretty damn annoying. Especially when moving large windows.
+ Pretty annoying. Especially when moving large windows.

  This isn't a dupe of #876575.

[Bug 947881] Re: VirtualBox crash when trying to share a mounted point folder

2013-02-22 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

I am not sure if this bug is in VirtualBox or is something deeper.

I mounted a .img file to /media and then tried to share it to the
windows xp running in VirtualBox. When I selected the folder VirtualBox
crashed meaning it wouldn't respond to anything with the windows window
blackened and the shared folder window also dead. I had to kill all
processes linked with VirtualBox from the terminal and when the
VirtualBox was zombified I still couldn't get rid of the VirtualBox
opened windows. So I tried xkill to kill the opened windows since
(theoretically) everything associated with VirtualBox was dead. xkill
did the trick and everything closed. Then I went to the mount point with
nautilus and when I clicked to open the folder nautilus froze with
Uninterruptible trying to do I/O on the folder I guess. From what I
read it is impossible to kill an Uninterruptible process so I tried to
- unmount the damn mounted .img but it said the device is busy. I finally
+ unmount the mounted .img but it said the device is busy. I finally
manage to unmount by using umount -l trying to force some exception in
the I/O in the kernel but still nothing, nautilus is Uninterruptible. I
tried to remount the folder but I couldn't since it said it's busy, so
now I am stuck with an open nautilus process that cannot be killed!

I do not know whether this is a VirtualBox bug, a mount bug, a nautilus
bug or a kernel bug! Any help killing nautilus is appreciated since
  rebooting is not an option!

Also running ps aux | grep nautilus I get
  user 23726 0.2 0.0 738636 1296 ?DFeb26 27:59 /usr/bin/nautilus
Doesn't this mean that nautilus is Defunct? So why am I getting
Uninterruptible in System Monitor?

[Bug 1005839] Re: NM prompts user for Wi-Fi password when a (dial-up) connection is already established

2013-02-22 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

  Scenario:

I'm in a place that has a WLAN, but either I don't have authorization
for it, or it's somehow broken.

I make a connection through my phone using DUN (other protocols are possible
I think, but that's how I do it.)
This works pretty well in itself, although it's not as fast as WLAN.

But then NetworkManager (I think) keeps popping up dialogs that say

- Wireless Network Authentication Required
+  Wireless Network Authentication Required

  and ask for a password.

This is very annoying. It interferes with whatever I'm doing, and is
embarrassing in meetings.
- (Damn, it just did it again.)
+ (It just did it again.)

It might make sense to inform a DUN user that a faster network is available,
via a notification perhaps that does not otherwise interfere with typing. A
dialog popping up is *not* the right answer.
But such notifications should be optional (you don't want them when doing a
presentation, for instance.)

  Thanks!

[Bug 806884] Re: mountall hangs when fstab contains aufs entries because device='none', paths specified in options

2013-02-22 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

  Hi,

for a webdav application I need apache with dav and a aufs mounted
directory. Therefore I have an entry

  none /var/www/dav/Public aufs
  br:/mnt/local/archiv/Public_dav:/mnt/local/archiv/Public 0 0

in my fstab, which works when using mount from the command line. But it
keeps the system from booting, not even the Singe-Use-Mode shell is
available anymore. System hangs within mountall. The last thing to be
seen is that mountall reports that mounting this entry fails.

I guess that at this time the other partitions are not yet mounted and
thus the directories needed for this to work do not yet exist.

So mountall is a) not able to mount regular and correct entries in fstab
and b) completely locks the machine even from admin access if so.

-
- Even worse, that damned ubuntu startup system does not allow to add local
scripts to be run between mounting regular disks and starting an apache. Really
broken.

[Bug 197103] Re: Installing script in Nautilus should add them automatically

2013-02-22 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

I've just used Synaptic to add the GNU "ConvertAudioFile" script to
Nautilus. However after doing so there was no right click "Scripts"
menu in Nautilus. So.. I had to manually install "nautilus-script-
manager" then drop to a terminal and do the following:

  ##user@computer:~$ nautilus-script-manager list-available
  ConvertAudioFile
  #user@computer:~$ nautilus-script-manager enable ConvertAudioFile

After which I now have the "Scripts" menu in Nautilus.

This entire process should have been done automatically by Synaptic, I
should not have had to manually install and run the scripts manager.

- But now the bloody script is popping up a bloody dialogue every 10 seconds
making it impossible to do anything until the bloody wretched thing has
finished. Damn the developer to hell who added this Microsoft "pop up a window
and steal focus" behaviour to GNOME !

[Bug 865193] Re: Windows keep losing focus in Ubuntu 11.10

2013-02-22 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

I updated my Oneiric Virtual Machine this morning and now windows keep
losing focus when I try and type in them. It doesn't appear to matter
- what window I am using (thunderbird, terminal). It's damn annoying
- because I cant use the terminal without having to click focus back. I
- can barely type a few characters without it happening.
+ what window I am using (thunderbird, terminal). It's annoying because I

This didn't happen before todays update.

[Bug 831022] Re: avahi daemon erroneously assumes host name conflicts (and causes more trouble then)

2013-02-22 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

  Hi,

i am running the server edition of Ubuntu LTS on a HP Proliant server.
That avahi daemon is driving me crazy.

The server is named Server1 , retrieves it's IP address pseudostatically
from a DHCP server, and announces several of its services through avahi
(e.g. offering print services to iPads, that's why Avahi is needed).

every now and then (not always) avahi daemon claims to have detected a
name collision at boot time. It then logs

  Aug 22 13:09:40 Server1 avahi-daemon[1520]: Host name conflict, retrying
  with

and uses Server1-2 as it's name, causing even the DHCP-Server to apply
with a different host name, thus causing a new IP address to be
- assigned. This damned avahi daemon is breaking my network structure and
- does not even tell in the logs, where the conflict came from or what
- made the daemon believe that there was a conflict.

[Bug 883673] Re: X started by lightdm renders X11 screen ugly/unusable

2013-02-22 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

  Hi,

after upgrading my system to oneiric, the X11 desktop is ugly and almost
unusable, because the fonts and characters are stretched horizontally
  and blurred.

I guess that the reason is a wrong/odd dpi value, because xdpyinfo says

- dimensions:1600x1200 pixels (473x302 millimeters)
- resolution:86x101 dots per inch
+   dimensions:1600x1200 pixels (473x302 millimeters)

- I would prefer to simply give X a better dpi value as a command line
argument, but as far as I can see that damned lightdm does not allow to
configure any command line parameters for X (which I consider as broken design).

[Bug 107719] Re: When firefox is downloading a file, crashes and restarts the session, it deletes the previously downloaded file

2013-02-22 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: firefox

I must say that this has been really annoying.

I was downloading a large file (the Feisty ISO, but that's not relevant)
when firefox crashed because one of the Flash plugin bugs. I re-opened
it, restored the session and the download manager trashed the data that
I had already downloaded. It was 400 MB, an hour and a half
  downloading...

The problem is that I was getting the file from a private mirror where I
have to login in order to download anything. So, when firefox re-opened
and tried to continue the download, it got a webpage saying "permission
- denied" and OVERWROTE the previous data, replacing it with the damn php
- file.
+ denied" and OVERWROTE the previous data, replacing it with the php file.

So, to sum up, the bug is the following: When firefox crashes, if it is
trying to resume a download, don't trash the downloaded data. If it
can't resume for some reason (in this case, because it got a php file
instead an ISO image), tell the user what to do, or make a backup of the
current data and then restart the download.

[Bug 94047] Re: Amarok intermittently gives the error "no suitable demux plugin found" when trying to play remote streams/files

2013-02-22 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: amarok

Trying to play remotely stored music files (e.g. mp3) or radio streams
sometimes gives an error pop-up that no suitable demux plugin was found.

-
  To reproduce:
Double click on one of my radio streams and sometimes it will play OK, other
times it will give me an error. If it gives an error I just keep trying to play
different radio streams until it starts working again - then the original will
work again.

+ As stated it is intermittent and annoying! It also happens when trying
+ to play music over samba shares. Could it be a problem with the KIO
+ slaves?

[Bug 980727] Re: Cannot connect to certain websites through a roline(rotronic) router

2013-02-22 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

I have a toshiba laptop from about 2008 connected through cable to a
roline rotronic router. The router is connected to the isp through
  pppoe.

2 days after booting I cannot connect to google.com or any sites related
to google.com such as youtube or sites that use google-analytics. It
either times out or it finally connects after about 5 minutes in
  waiting.

I have tried using firefox, opera, chromium, lynx, wget everything. Ping
works and it's not a DNS problem since I tried the google 8.8.8.8,
8.8.4.4 addresses and it doesn't help in any way.

I tried restarting the router. Nothing. Modified the mt from 1500 to
1492 like on the pppoe on the router. Nothing. Tried 1464. Now no sites
work. Back on 1492, everything works except google.

I install wireshark and see that when I wait for google to load I get a
lot of TCP previous segment lost errors to google ip. The dns keeps
trying different google servers with different ips but all have the same
problem: TCP previous segment lost. After a few minutes it either times
out or it finds a server that responds. But if I try again then I have
  to wait another 5 minutes.

Using windows both xp and 7 doesn't exhibit the problem. Other windows
machines on the network don't exhibit the issue. I closed all other
machines so that I am alone connected to the router. Nothing. After a
few hours it might start working again all by itself and after another
couple of days it starts having the problem again.

I reinstalled the system from scratch. Formatted even the home partition
- hoping it was some damn configuration file. Still can't connect.
+ hoping it was some configuration file. Still can't connect.

Using startpage.com instead of google.com or google.ro (I am from
  Romania) works.

I had the system working for months when I installed some updates
including a kernel update a couple of months ago. From then on ubuntu
11.10 started exhibiting this problem. I do not remember what kernel
version it was but I updated to 3.2 I think after I tried the precise
pangolin beta and it still exhibited the issue.

I have tested with the current mainline kernel(linux-
  image-3.4.0-999-generic_3.4.0-999.201204260409_amd64.deb) in precise
  pangolin, same problem.

WORKAROUND: I got rid of the router and connected directly to internet
using pppoe configuration from ubuntu. Guess what now google and
  everything else works.

WORKAROUND: Rebooting the system works for 2 days.

[Bug 1030207] Re: Rhythmbox stops playing near the end of an MP3 track

2013-02-21 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

This has happened a number of times over the last few months. I never
thought to check the file format previously. I think it's worth
  reporting a bug now.

My music was playing (shuffled) alright for a few hours. It then went
quiet when a song had (just about?) finished.

The song is from an MP3 file. It reached 3:02 of 3:04, and then stopped.
I have tried to start a different track, without success. All the
Rhythmbox control seem OK, but there is no progress on the time bar and
there is no sound coming out.

  1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System
  -> About Ubuntu

  Ubuntu 12.04

  2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy
pkgname' or by checking in Software Center

  rhythmbox 2.96-0ubuntu4.1

  3) What you expected to happen

Music to keep playing (shuffled, if it makes any difference)

  4) What happened instead

- It pplayed for a few hours and then stopped playing (froze near the end

[Bug 498734] Re: nmbd stops randomly -> cannot access using hostname from Windows XP

2013-02-06 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: samba

I found a number of reports about nmbd not starting.
For me nmbd does start, but stops randomly, so while this is a different bug,
it must be somehow related.

  But, first things first.
I am new to Linux. I followed various tutorial on the net to install a NAS
using Ubuntu Server. I installed it, was working for a while, then it stopped
working, I reinstalled it, and this cycle was going on and on and on like 10
times.
Then, I decided to call in a favour from a friend who has experience.
I installed Ubuntu Server 9.10 again (amd64), updated the system using
apt-get (that was yesterday, 19-Dec-2009), configured Samba again the way I
used to, and I called my friend to take a look. He used ssh to access the
machine, and do his magic. He fine-tuned Samba with the users and permissions I
wanted, then he said we should also reboot the system to make sure that
everything mounts and loads as it should - so, we rebooted the the system.
After reboot, I could access my Samba share just fine. So, we opened a drink to
celebrate. About five minutes later, I went back to the machine to map the
drives, but I could not access the Samba share using the netbios name from
Windows XP - I could access it using the IP address though.
- We had no idea what was going on and we've been Google-ing around for hours,
trying various configuration changes in network setting as recommended by
various messages claiming that it solved their problem. Well, none of those
network tweaks have helped us, so I gave up. My friend was pissed because it
was supposed to work so he kept checking things I know nothing about. Then he
said: f**k, nmbd is not running! He restarted Samba (and with it nmbd) and
everything was working again. After a while, it stopped again. He tried
restarting Samba again, but this time it did not work. He said we should start
from boot and he will watch it and see when it stops and why. So, we reboot and
he keeps his eyes open. He said there are some read errors in
/var/log/samba/log.nmbd for the socket. The is what he sent me:

I Googled about this and I ended up here, sounds like it to me (who don't
know much about Linux):
  http://lists.samba.org/archive/samba/1998-March/006767.html
My friend ended up on this forum, here:
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/462169
Though that error talks about nmbd not starting. For us, nmbd does start (he
found traces and I can also access the Samna share using the netbios host
name), but it stops at some point which we could not track down.
  Thank you for fixing.

[Bug 572592] Re: It is difficult to change the window size as there is only a one-pixel space to start widening the window

2013-02-06 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

In Lucid, with an Radiance theme changing the horizontal window size is
a real nightmare - there is only a one-pixel wide space when the mouse
icon changes to the one indicating a possibility of changing the window
size! For vertical size it's 5 pixels for the bottom and 4 for the top
(I guess 5 pixels would be the optimal size).

My notebook has a native 1440x900 resolution on a 15,4'' screen. Just
- imagine how it must piss people off when they use 1900x1080 resolution
- on 15,6'' screens (yes, there are such screens, e.g. Dell ships such
- ones).
+ imagine how it must make people a when they use 1900x1080 resolution on
+ 15,6'' screens (yes, there are such screens, e.g. Dell ships such ones).

As I don't see another way of changing window size, it is really a
  usability drawback.

[Bug 429836] Re: Apport eats system without being asked

2013-02-06 Thread George Gill
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: apport

Since apport runs gdb without asking the user it might very well kill
the system (close to that in any case) through debugging.

  Example:
  - java crashes
  - at some point apport decided to show up (which in my experience can be now
or in one week)
  - apports eats all memory
- - apachelogger is getting seriously pissed because he actually wanted to fix
a bug
+ - apachelogger is getting seriously upset because he actually wanted to fix a
bug

  Also see attached screenshot
