No, I don't think I've seen it happen for a while now.

[Bug 528991] [NEW] bad brightness behaviour on battery

2010-02-27 Thread George Roberts
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

Automatic display brightness adjustment on battery doesn't work correctly for
arbitrary brightness levels.
The system appears to expect the starting brightness to always be 100%, so
falls down when it isn't.
The following assumes 'Reduce backlight brightness', and 'Dim display when
idle' are selected
First off, the correct behaviour:
1. Set brightness to 100%, while plugged in, or set it while not plugged in and
open the power manager
2. Unplug power or observe as power manager is opened that brightness drops to
around 50%
3. Leave system idle until brightness dims further.
4. Move mouse etc to 'wake' from idle, observe brightness return to that of
stage 2.
5. Plug in power, brightness returns to 100%

The bad behaviour occurs when either you don't start at 100% brightness to
begin with, or you change brightness manually after stage 2 above.
1. Try doing stage 1 and 2, then change the brightness manually, then open the
power manager again, for me brightness drops by 50% again.
2. Set the brightness manually and then let the system go idle and dim the
screen, for me the brightness will not go back up again when I 'wake' the
system.

[Bug 340107] Re: Wierd blocking artifact overlayed onto flash video

2009-12-11 Thread George Roberts
I'm posting in this because it sounds the same as the bug I want to report.
Since Jaunty, embedded youtube videos often have these artefacts flickering
through. I'm fairly certain that it is the menu 'showing through', by menu I
mean the screen that can be accessed by clicking the up arrow at the bottom
right of an embedded video and then the first option which causes the video to
shrink and become part of a menu with a youtube search bar, embed and URL link
with similar videos at the bottom.
The reason I think that it's this is that I think I can sometimes see the text
in part of what flickers into vision, also the flickering stops once the video
has been 'shrunk' to form part of that menu.

[Bug 343354] Re: ondemand governor should be used by default

I notice on the computers I run Ubuntu on, the scaling starts out set to
'Performance' immediately after startup, but then switches to 'Ondemand'
automatically about 30s-1min later. Is this not the case for everyone
else?

[Bug 326149] Re: ondemand cpufreq governor reacts too slowly

2009-08-28 Thread George Roberts
I was looking to post a bug report about the ondemand governor, but this one
looks similar enough [see what you guys think, I'll open a new report if it's
too different].
My problem is similar, except it's not that the governor reacts too slowly,
more that it doesn't give enough Hz when doing something which clearly benefits
when the speed is set higher. I can start watching a HQ youtube video while
it's set to ondemand and the gov stays at the lowest level, the video will
appear a little slow and stuttery at this point. I can then set it to
performance mode, and the video is perfectly fine. If I then set it to ondemand
again while the video is still running, the level switches to 2nd from lowest
instead! And that level works fine too. If only the ondemand governor would
switch up automatically to whatever level is needed!

This isn't the same as the bug I've seen where the governor won't change
at all though, if a process comes along that clearly uses alot of cpu,
then the ondemand gov kicks it up to full.

[Bug 406830] Re: Klondike never available in AisleRiot Solitaire

2009-08-03 Thread George Roberts
I've figured this out with help from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canfield
and
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/408412

There's actually no bug here, as wikipedia explains; Klondike is called
Canfield in British English. That's why Klondike is unavailable in this locale
and selecting Canfield gives you the actual game of Klondike.
If you want to play Canfield [US], you select 'Demon' which is the British name
for Canfield.

This was confusing!

[Bug 406830] [NEW] Klondike never available in AisleRiot Solitaire

2009-07-30 Thread George Roberts
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-games

I've used Ubuntu since Hardy, and I've installed Hardy, Intrepid and
Jaunty on several different computers. None of these installations ever
had the Klondike version of patience available in AisleRiot Solitaire.

available.

2009-07-30 Thread George Roberts
There you go, I'd have thought we could at least rule out my eyes as the
problem ;)

Additional confirmation comes from typing sol -v klondike in terminal,
opens a Canfield game; which is the default.

It's always puzzled me that I seem to be the only one affected by
this...

klondike.scm is present in /usr/share/gnome-games/aisleriot/games

[Bug 406830] Re: Klondike never available in AisleRiot Solitaire

2009-07-30 Thread George Roberts
I'm pretty sure the klondike.scm double entry in the list is a result of
my experimenting with editing the file, I deleted the edited file when
it didn't work and replaced it with a backup of the original.

[Bug 406830] Re: Klondike never available in AisleRiot Solitaire

2009-07-30 Thread George Roberts
That works!
Another interesting thing is that the true problem before was not that Klondike
was unavailable, Canfield was the game that was missing! I've noticed now
[comparing the two] that AisleRiot was opening what it called Canfield but
the game is actually Klondike that is operating. With that C locale trick;
Klondike and Canfield are both listed as selectable games and Canfield is
different to what was brought up before [as I said, actually Klondike].

So we've isolated it to a locale problem.

[Bug 355784] [NEW] Brightness decreases perpetually

2009-04-05 Thread George Roberts
Public bug reported:

Sorry if this is already reported, there's a lot of brightness bugs on here and
I can't find this one if it's here.
Using the Jaunty beta on my Samsung NC10.
I've got the gpm set to reduce lcd brightness to 40% when on battery, and also
to dim the display when idle.
What I expect to happen is for the brightness to be set to 40% 'absolutely'
when the system is disconnected from AC, reduce further [possibly relative
reduction] when the system is idle, go back up to the previous brightness when
brought out of idle state and restore to 100% when plugged back into AC.

What actually happens is that the brightness is changed relatively to the
current brightness, my brightness changes thusly:
On AC - 100%
Disconnect AC - 40%
Idle - 30%*40% = 12%
Out of idle - 40%*40% = 16%

If this were to continue without me putting the brightness back up to
100%, it would obviously just keep getting darker and darker.

** Affects: ubuntu
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New
