[Bug 219757] Re: Two Password Required dialog boxes are displayed on startup

2009-03-05 Thread Gerry
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 195698 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/195698

The bug that this is marked as a duplicate of is completely different.

This bug refers to the master password and the bug is that it is asked
for, multiple times upon startup of Firefox.

The other bug refers to the password prompt for a password protected
proxy server and that the login is not saved once and then never asked
for again.

While both bugs refer to unwanted password prompts, they are clearly
very different bugs.

[Bug 195698] Re: Password asked separately for each tab that requires it

2009-04-18 Thread Gerry
Those two solutions aren't much good if for instance you're logged in
and people start using your computer and you can't stick around to watch
everything they do. With a master password on the manager you can feel
free to allow then to look up clips on Youtube and not worry about them
jotting down all your passwords while you're out of the room.

[Bug 195698] Re: Password asked separately for each tab that requires it

2009-04-19 Thread Gerry
I agree with you that if you've entered the master password already, the
it is an issue unless you restart the browser. It would be great if there was
a button or keycombo I could press to relock the password manager, but
your method doesn't provide for that either so I was simply saying that
it offers better protection.

> It's basically a matter of how much you trust other people who you
leave at your PC.

> If you're paranoid about such things it's better to quickly create a
new system account, lock your current window manager login, and then
login to the new window manager as the new user (and make sure that
your home directory permissions are secure).

Well if you want to remain secure then you can't really trust them at all.
Even if you trust them, you may have others who rely on you not to trust
other people with that data.

It's not necessary about paranoia, it could just be about security. The
problem with your solution is that it will make your fiends, girlfriend,
associates etc. think badly of you. You can't let people know that you are
going out of your way because you don't trust them, because that offends
people which will then impact on you. :) Restarting firefox is much easier to
disguise. But as I said, the ideal solution would be to be able to hit a button
or key combo to relock the manager.

However my point was that disk encryption won't protect you in this
situation at all. I'm assuming if you unmounted the encrypted folder then
things would just stop working?

[Bug 195698] Re: Password asked separately for each tab that requires it

2009-04-19 Thread Gerry
Firstly you are right, I should have said "the option is quite deep in the menu
system and thus may be easy for the typical user to overlook". However more
importantly, I didn't not realise that clearing Authenticated Sessions also
logged you out of the password manager, I had assumed it was just clearing
HTTP/S Authentication sessions. This then is a more appropriate option as you
have said. I have changed the defaults of what is cleared by going to
Preferences -> Privacy > Private Data > Settings
and unchecking everything except "Authenticated Sessions" and then I unchecked
the option
Preferences -> Privacy > Private Data > Settings > Ask me before clearing
private data

Now the [Ctrl+Shift+Del] option clears exactly what I want cleared.
Thank you!

Thank you so much for all the information. I was so excited when I got
to the part about the extension that I went ahead and created it before
reading on. I have attached the generated extension from your
instructions (with the author changed to yourself though :) ). I'm sure
it will be useful to somebody searching for that exact thing.

So now we have a good and clear use case for continued use of the
password manager combined with the option for clearing authenticated
sessions regardless of weather you are using an encrypted home folder.
So you're post actually put us back on topic. :)

[Bug 177129] Re: Laptop lid close button dosen't work

2008-12-05 Thread Gerry
I have this same bug on a Dell L400. I'm not sure this is being classified as a
kernel ACPI bug since ACPI appears to be behaving correctly; the
/proc/acpi/button/lid/LID0/state file is going true and false.
But I maybe totally in the dark about what the parts are doing.

hal, upon which acpid is depending for notifications, is not seeing this event.
It seems like we have switched paradigms for noticing these events and some of
the laptops have been left in the dust. What is the tie between kernel states
of acpi devices and hal notifications? Is this kernel work or hal work? Is hal
in the kernel. This bug and others like it are numerous in ubuntu land.
Would more data help? I can submit the same files as above, but they are no
more interesting.

Thanks for all you do!
Gerry
(I have the added problem that once a minute hal notifies me (and acpid) that
my sleep button is being pressed when it is not. When I DO press it, it
notifies me then too.)

I should clarify that the error did not reoccur on restarting the re-

that seems to deal with security policy options where
nsIActiveSecurityPolicy seems to be some object type.

[Bug 237986] [NEW] Installation loop with preseed file or Stops at "Select disk to partition". DL145 cciss

2008-06-06 Thread Gerry
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

Installing hardy 8.04 over a local net (PXE) and picking up the preseed file
from a url.
Installing to an HP DL145 G3. (Hewlett-Packard Company Smart Array E200i (SAS
Controller))
/dev/cciss/c0d0.
Installing from a local mirror. Boot kernel and initrd in the TFTP server are
from the alternate CD:
ubuntu-amd64-alternate/install/netboot/ubuntu-installer/amd64/

An interactive (no preseed) PXE install works fine.
I created a preseed file which works well for everything except partitioning. I
always have to answer the "Select disk to partition:" before it will continue
with the partitioner.
Here are the partman lines from the preseed file:

d-i partman-auto/init_automatically_partition string Guided - use entire disk
d-i partman-auto/choose_recipe select Separate /home, /usr, /var, and /tmp
partitions
d-i partman/confirm boolean true
d-i partman/choose_partition select Finish partitioning and write changes to
disk

I booted with DEBCONF_DEBUG=5 and captured this via syslog during a preseed
install:
Jun 6 17:51:17 debconf: --> INPUT critical partman-auto/select_disk
Jun 6 17:51:17 debconf: <-- 0 question will be asked
Jun 6 17:51:17 debconf: --> GO
Jun 6 17:51:19 debconf: <-- 0 ok
Jun 6 17:51:19 debconf: --> GET partman-auto/select_disk
Jun 6 17:51:19 debconf: <-- 0 SCSI.CCISS (-,0,0) (cciss/c0d0) - 300.0 GB Compaq
Smart Array
Jun 6 17:51:19 debconf: --> METAGET partman/text/scsi_disk description
Jun 6 17:51:19 debconf: <-- 0 SCSI%s (%s,%s,%s) (%s)
Jun 6 17:51:19 debconf: --> GET partman-auto/expert_recipe
Jun 6 17:51:19 debconf: <-- 0
Jun 6 17:51:19 debconf: --> GET partman-auto/expert_recipe_file
Jun 6 17:51:19 debconf: <-- 0
Jun 6 17:51:19 debconf: --> GET partman-auto/choose_recipe
Jun 6 17:51:19 debconf: <-- 0 Separate /home, /usr, /var, and /tmp partitions

Except for having to press ENTER once, this works. (question will be
asked).

Then I added this line to the preseed file:
d-i partman-auto/select_disk string SCSI.CCISS (-,0,0) (/dev/cciss/c0d0) -
300.0 GB Compaq Smart Array

And captured this via syslog during an install:
Jun 6 12:38:45 debconf: <-- 0
Jun 6 12:38:45 debconf: --> INPUT critical partman-auto/select_disk
Jun 6 12:38:45 debconf: <-- 30 question skipped
Jun 6 12:38:45 debconf: --> GO
Jun 6 12:38:45 debconf: <-- 0 ok
Jun 6 12:38:45 debconf: --> GET partman-auto/select_disk
Jun 6 12:38:45 debconf: <-- 0 SCSI.CCISS (-,0,0) (/dev/cciss/c0d0) - 300.0 GB
Compaq Smart Array
Jun 6 12:38:45 debconf: --> METAGET partman/text/scsi_disk description
Jun 6 12:38:45 debconf: <-- 0 SCSI%s (%s,%s,%s) (%s)
Jun 6 12:38:45 partman: Error running 'tune2fs -l /dev/cciss/c0d0'
Jun 6 12:38:45 partman: Error running 'tune2fs -l /dev/cciss/c0d0'
Jun 6 12:38:45 partman: Error running 'tune2fs -l /dev/cciss/c0d0'

This just loops over and over (actually there are about 75 lines that loop but
most of them are about the error running tune2fs). The install never goes
anywhere.
Let me know if you want me to attach the entire syslog.

The (/dev/cciss/c0d0) isn't a difference. I've tried it with many different
things in select_disk including
SCSI.CCISS (-,0,0) (/dev/cciss/c0d0) - 300.0 GB Compaq Smart Array
auto
SCSI.CCISS (-\,0\,0) (/dev/cciss/c0d0) - 300.0 GB Compaq Smart Array

I've tried it with select and with string.
Nothing changes. It just loops.

Any clues?

[Bug 149071] Re: -server kernel variant fails to boot on PowerEdge 2650 with AACRAID timeouts

2008-05-15 Thread Gerry
TJ Whatever your bug is, it's not the one referred to in this bug.

The original problem is that *-server* kernels experience
  "Host adapter abort request"
messages during bootup and fail to boot
on a Dell PE2650 after the install. (The boot from CD and install work fine).
but the *-generic* kernels never do.

You reported a kernel panic on a Dell 6300 with a -generic kernel
during an install.

Is anyone actually dealing with the original bug -- which still exists
in Hardy or does the Perc firmware update always fix it? If it does, we
should get this onto the front page.

I'm going to go do a firmware upgrade now that I've seen this with Hardy
also.

[Bug 149071] Re: -server kernel variant fails to boot on PowerEdge 2650 with AACRAID timeouts

2008-05-15 Thread Gerry
Confirmed. I just did the same thing.

Got the firmware from
http://ftp.us.dell.com/scsi-raid/RAID_FRMW_LX_R168380
edited it with vi to change the shell from /bin/sh to /bin/bash
made it executable
extracted it with
  ./RAID_FRMW_LX_R168380.BIN --extract RAID
(ignoring the rpm errors)
cd RAID
edited adalnx.sh to change the shell to bash and ran it.
Then i ran ./adalnx and it flashed the controller BIOS.

Now if I could just do something similar with the Remote Access card.

This then is a more appropriate option as you
have said. I have changed the defaults of what is cleared by going to
Preferences -> Privacy > Private Data > Settings
and unchecking everything except "Authenticated Sessions" and then I unchecked
the option
Preferences -> Privacy > Private Data > Settings > Ask me before clearing
private data

An interactive (no preseed) PXE install works fine.
I created a preseed file which works well for everything except partitioning. I
always have to answer the "Select disk to partition:" before it will continue
with the partitioner.
Here are the partman lines from the preseed file:

d-i partman-auto/init_automatically_partition string Guided - use entire disk
d-i partman-auto/choose_recipe select Separate /home, /usr, /var, and /tmp

d-i partman/confirm boolean true
d-i partman/choose_partition select Finish partitioning and write changes to

I booted with DEBCONF_DEBUG=5 and captured this via syslog during a preseed

Jun 6 17:51:17 debconf: --> INPUT critical partman-auto/select_disk

Except for having to press ENTER once, this works. (question will be

Then I added this line to the preseed file:
d-i partman-auto/select_disk string SCSI.CCISS (-,0,0) (/dev/cciss/c0d0) -

And captured this via syslog during an install:

This just loops over and over (actually there are about 75 lines that loop but
most of them are about the error running tune2fs). The install never goes
anywhere.
Let me know if you want me to attach the entire syslog.

The (/dev/cciss/c0d0) isn't a difference. I've tried it with many different
things in select_disk including

auto

I should clarify that the error did not reoccur on restarting the re-

that seems to deal with security policy options where
nsIActiveSecurityPolicy seems to be some object type.

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 195698 ***

The bug that this is marked as a duplicate of is completely different.

This bug refers to the master password and the bug is that it is asked
for, multiple times upon startup of Firefox.

The other bug refers to the password prompt for a password protected
proxy server and that the login is not saved once and then never asked
for again.

While both bugs refer to unwanted password prompts, they are clearly
very different bugs.

This then is a more appropriate option as you
have said. I have changed the defaults of what is cleared by going to
Preferences -> Privacy > Private Data > Settings
and unchecking everything except "Authenticated Sessions" and then I unchecked
the option
Preferences -> Privacy > Private Data > Settings > Ask me before clearing
private data

[Bug 237986] [NEW] Installation loop with preseed file or Stops at "Select disk to partition". DL145 cciss

2008-06-06 Thread Gerry
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

Installing hardy 8.04 over a local net (PXE) and picking up the preseed file
from a url.
Installing to an HP DL145 G3. (Hewlett-Packard Company Smart Array E200i (SAS
Controller))
/dev/cciss/c0d0.
Installing from a local mirror. Boot kernel and initrd in the TFTP server are
from the alternate CD:
ubuntu-amd64-alternate/install/netboot/ubuntu-installer/amd64/

An interactive (no preseed) PXE install works fine.
I created a preseed file which works well for everything except partitioning. I
always have to answer the "Select disk to partition:" before it will continue
with the partitioner.
Here are the partman lines from the preseed file:

d-i partman-auto/init_automatically_partition string Guided - use entire disk
d-i partman-auto/choose_recipe select Separate /home, /usr, /var, and /tmp
partitions
d-i partman/confirm boolean true
d-i partman/choose_partition select Finish partitioning and write changes to
disk

I booted with DEBCONF_DEBUG=5 and captured this via syslog during a preseed
install:
Jun 6 17:51:17 debconf: --> INPUT critical partman-auto/select_disk
Jun 6 17:51:17 debconf: <-- 0 question will be asked
Jun 6 17:51:17 debconf: --> GO

Jun 6 17:51:19 debconf: --> GET partman-auto/select_disk

Jun 6 17:51:19 debconf: --> METAGET partman/text/scsi_disk description
Jun 6 17:51:19 debconf: <-- 0 SCSI%s (%s,%s,%s) (%s)
Jun 6 17:51:19 debconf: --> GET partman-auto/expert_recipe
Jun 6 17:51:19 debconf: <-- 0
Jun 6 17:51:19 debconf: --> GET partman-auto/expert_recipe_file
Jun 6 17:51:19 debconf: <-- 0
Jun 6 17:51:19 debconf: --> GET partman-auto/choose_recipe
Jun 6 17:51:19 debconf: <-- 0 Separate /home, /usr, /var, and /tmp partitions

Except for having to press ENTER once, this works. (question will be
asked).

Then I added this line to the preseed file:
d-i partman-auto/select_disk string SCSI.CCISS (-,0,0) (/dev/cciss/c0d0) -
300.0 GB Compaq Smart Array

And captured this via syslog during an install:
Jun 6 12:38:45 debconf: <-- 0

I should clarify that the error did not reoccur on restarting the re-
installed firefox. Double clicking on the error brought up a java file
that seems to deal with security policy options where
nsIActiveSecurityPolicy seems to be some object type.

This then is a more appropriate option as you
have said. I have changed the defaults of what is cleared by going to
Preferences -> Privacy > Private Data > Settings
and unchecking everything except "Authenticated Sessions" and then I unchecked
the option
Preferences -> Privacy > Private Data > Settings > Ask me before clearing
private data

[Bug 363664] Re: xfce4-settings-helper is slow on startup

2009-04-24 Thread gerry skerbitz
I struggled with this today. The friendly folks on irc suggested I check xfce
bugzilla to see if the 4.6.1 update would fix this problem. I stumbled on this
bug.
http://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5040
In it the poster discovers that the slowness problem goes away when they

1. Go to Xfc4 Settings Manager->Keyboard->Layout
2. Click 'Use system defaults'

I found that neither clearing cache nor starting with a fresh .config
directory helped, but that fixed it for me.

I hope that short-circuits someone's long search.

2006-08-21 Thread Gerry Neary
I found the answer, well in my case at least. I had a couple of dead USB
sticks (USB 1.1) attached to the machine. When I removed them everything
worked fine, Might be worth a check.

I am nor sure it was cos they were dead or cos they were 1.1.
