[Bug 1727183] [NEW] Executing commands through sudo or equivalent doesn't work

2017-10-25 Thread Gilles Gravier
Public bug reported:

Any application that needs to run with elevated privileges fails to
launch on artful (17.10) desktop.

Whether it's run from a terminal with sudo (e.g. "sudo gnome-terminal")
or directly from the GUI icon by clicking on the application itself
(e.g. launch "Synaptic Package Manager" from the application list and
then enter your password) the same behavior happens: Application does
not run.

If doing this from a terminal, the resulting error message is:
Unable to init server: Could not connect: Connection refused
Failed to parse arguments: Cannot open display:

As a workaround, running "xhost +" from a terminal before allows all
elevated privileges apps to now run. But this isn't helping apps that
need to run at start of graphical environment and for which opening a
terminal manually before to type "xhost +" isn't feasible.

This is a regression since 17.04.

2013-11-13 Thread Gilles Gravier
Hi!

Yes, enabling the -proposed repository and triggering an update
automatically (with the update of nautilus-dropbox) triggers the
installation of libappindicator1 and its dependency libindicator7.

So all good for me!

Thanks,
Gilles.

[Bug 1242413] [NEW] nautilus-dropbox needs a dependency on libappindicator1

2013-10-20 Thread Gilles Gravier
Public bug reported:

Hi!

When installing nautilus-dropbox, everything works well except that
there is no notification icon in the notification area. This is fixed
very easily by manually installing the libappindicator1 package right
after installing nautilus-dropbox and logging out and back in.

This seems to imply that the nautilus-dropbox package should have a
dependency set for libappindicator1 so that it gets installed at the
same time if not already present on the system.

Should be fairly trivial to fix.

Re: [Bug 1178248] Re: LO (4.0.3) hangs when testing mail merge settings in writer

2013-07-16 Thread Gilles Gravier
Hi!

Thanks. So let me get this straight... if Google suggests 2 possible
ports... and one of them crashes LibreOffice, then this is not a bug in
LibreOffice, but we should just use the other port.

Hum... I like the logic of this. (this is sarcasm)

Gilles.

Re: [Bug 1178248] Re: LO (4.0.3) hangs when testing mail merge settings in writer

2013-05-14 Thread Gilles Gravier
Hi!

Here is the step by step :

- Launch Writer.

- Tools-Options-LibreOffice Writer-Mail Merge E-mail

- Fill in the details (I use Gmail's smtp.gmail.com, with SSL enabled
and port 465).

- Select Server Authentication, check Server requires authentication.

- Enter Username (@gmail.com address) and password.

- Click OK.

- Close the settings by clicking OK.

- Open Tools-Options-LibreOffice Writer-Mail Merge E-mail

- Check settings are properly memorized.

- Click Test settings... and that hangs.

Note... If you change the port from 465 to 587 it works fine...

[Bug 993240] [NEW] Fingerprint recognition login and encrypted home don't work together

2012-05-02 Thread Gilles Gravier
Public bug reported:

If you use fingerprint recognition, while using encrypted home
directory, then it just doesn't work.

There are 2 issues at hand, here...

1) The .fprint directory, which stores the fingerprint database of a
user, is stored in the encrypted home directory. So is not available to
the greeter application to recognize prints. This is what causes the
Could not locate any suitable fingerprints matched with available
hardware message on the login prompt.

2) If you decide to copy these files to /home/YourUser from a command
line, without the encrypted home there, then you can actually login from
the greeter session, with recognized prints. But then a second
phenomenon appears. Since you didn't type your password, there is
nothing to unlock your home directory encryption key... which means it
doesn't get decrypted... which means you get kicked out of your session
immediately as no configuration files are available.

This is present in all versions of Ubuntu that support encrypted home
directories and fingerprint scanners / PAMs.

[Bug 52551] Mounting an external USB hard disk doesn't work in 6.06.

2006-07-10 Thread Gilles Gravier
Public bug reported:

If I plug in an external hard disk in a USB box on my Ubuntu 6.06
machine (SHUTTLE XPC ST20G5), it doesn't work.

I get the following message in /var/log/syslog :

Jul 5 20:30:29 localhost kernel: [17180492.432000] usb 4-1: new high speed USB
device using ehci_hcd and address 6
Jul 5 20:30:40 localhost kernel: [17180503.976000] usb 4-1: device not
accepting address 6, error -110
Jul 5 20:30:40 localhost kernel: [17180504.092000] usb 4-1: new high speed USB
device using ehci_hcd and address 7
Jul 5 20:30:52 localhost kernel: [17180515.636000] usb 4-1: device not
accepting address 7, error -110
Jul 5 20:30:52 localhost kernel: [17180515.752000] usb 4-1: new high speed USB
device using ehci_hcd and address 8
Jul 5 20:31:02 localhost kernel: [17180526.176000] usb 4-1: device not
accepting address 8, error -110
Jul 5 20:31:03 localhost kernel: [17180526.292000] usb 4-1: new high speed USB
device using ehci_hcd and address 9
Jul 5 20:31:13 localhost kernel: [17180536.716000] usb 4-1: device not
accepting address 9, error -110

If I unplug the disk, then type : sudo modprobe -r ehci_hcd and then
plug the disk back in, it works... I can mount it, but the disk is
extremely slow (maybe 8 to 10 times slower than it should be).

Probably a kernel bug... but not sure. Anybody can reproduce? It was
also signaled long ago on the forum :

[Bug 24925] Re: Unlink after no-IRQ

2006-07-10 Thread Gilles Gravier
Same problem with a USB attached IDE hard disk. And acpi=off didn't fix
it.

Machine is SHUTTLE XPC ST20G5 with nVidia nForce chipset and AMD CPU.
Running in 32 bit mode.
