[Bug 1554652] Re: nautilus-share broken with libpam-smbpass removed

2020-05-14 Thread Gilles Schintgen
Forgot to mention: this is with Ubuntu 20.04. And since I upgraded my
main system 14.04->16.04->18.04->20.04 I also confirmed the brokenness
in a VM with a fresh 20.04 setup, just to convince myself that this
issue actually happens out-of-the-box.

[Bug 1554652] Re: nautilus-share broken with libpam-smbpass removed

2020-05-14 Thread Gilles Schintgen
Wow, this is a frustating issue! It took me hours to figure out, simply
because I couldn't believe what most solutions for older Ubuntu releases
told me: it's broken out of the box and I need to fiddle with samba
internals.

Yes a simple "sudo smbpasswd -a myusername" is sufficient to make it work (with
authenticated shares).
But there is no indication whatsoever in the GUI for this! It even proposes to
install samba in the first place!

It unequivocally passes the message "This is a nice GUI and it takes
care of this. No need to worry."

But the exact opposite is the case. IMHO this is worse than having no
GUI. Without a GUI I know that I just have to do a quick google search
and follow some instructions (set up samba...) and all is well in a few
minutes or half an hour. At least it's straightforward.

I'm a seasoned Linux user, but the current GUI sent me in all the wrong
directions. It actively suggests that it takes care of everything, so I
thought it'd be highly counterproductive to get in its way and edit
samba's configuration myself. (Too many cooks...)

I see that there are longstanding technical issues with the connection
to PAM and those may be hard to fix. I totally accept that!

But please, please, at the very least add some tooltip or popup dialog
or text label (or modify an existing one) that informs the user that he
is expected to manually add a samba user&password!

[Bug 1143495] Re: udisks reporting input/output error that seems to be nonsense

2016-07-19 Thread Gilles Schintgen
I tried disabling udisks's checking of SMART attributes: open gnome-
disk-utility ("Disks"), select the SSD, click the "hamburger" icon in
the top right corner, SMART, disable. But unfortunately it is
automatically re-enabled after a reboot.

Is there a workaround?

[Bug 1569724] Re: noatime option

2016-07-18 Thread Gilles Schintgen
I've stumbled upon the same issue.

Here's what I found:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt-btrfs-
snapshot/+question/263994

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt-btrfs-snapshot/+bug/833980

In my opinion "older than" should NOT imply "last accessed/used". Such a
feature should be taken care of separately / optionally. I'd guess that
most users use apt-btrfs-snapshot exclusively in order to revert their
system in case of an update gone wrong. In this use case, atime is of no
practical use whatsoever. (Of course some users will use apt-btrfs-
snapshot to switch between different versions of their OS and this
should be supported, but preferably not at the expense of the "main"
feature.)

[Bug 1072206] Re: [nvidia] Window content is black or transparent

2015-09-04 Thread Gilles Schintgen

I wasn't following this bug until today when I thought enough is enough. (It's
been annoying me for quite some time)

I'm skeptical of the "fix released" status, since I am *still*
experiencing the described behaviour: black or transparent windows.

Thanks to everybody for investigating this non-critical but very
annoying bug!

[Bug 718427] Re: recoll slows system to a crawl

2014-09-09 Thread Gilles Schintgen
I think I'm seeing the same behaviour as the original reporter: recoll
is causing huge amounts of IO, which really doesn't play nice with the
rest of the system. I recently moved my /home from an SSD (unencrypted)
to a classic HDD (luks-encrypted) and now my system often slows down to
a (temporary) halt: programs being grayed out while actively working
with them.

Whenever this happens I see massive iowait caused by recoll.

I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 on an i5 with 8GB of RAM and a Seagate Momentus 7200.4
drive.
(The system itself resides on a first-gen Sandforce SSD)

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation

Does this device correspond to my scanner?. Shouldn't it be owned by the

[Bug 220657] Re: reduce backlight brightness / dim display when idle

2009-02-22 Thread Gilles Schintgen
Oh well, I got confused from all the different versions I'm currently
running. In 8.04 (netbook remix 1.01) screen dimming is not yet
implemented and the Ubuntu version in which it was working was actually
8.10. So as far as I am concerned it's working as intended, but still
it's neither documented nor configurable. Anyway, I'm very sorry for the
noise.

[Bug 220657] Re: reduce backlight brightness / dim display when idle

2009-02-22 Thread Gilles Schintgen
I can only concur that this is still an issue. Why is it still marked as
INCOMPLETE? What's the missing info?

I'm using the Ubuntu Netbook Remix 1.01 (lpia, based on 8.04) on an
Ideapad s10e and the screen is never dimmed. I think (but can't be sure
due to inexistent documentation!) what it should look like: when I'm
running a "normal" 8.04 (from USB, using unetbootin) the screen is
dimmed to complete blackness after a few seconds of inactivity.

I'd really like to debug/fix this issue since it could probably save
quite some energy. However I don't know where to start looking since
this feature seems to be neither documented nor configurable (timeout,
how much dimming). Where do I find this "brightness applet" that was
mentioned in comment #3?

[Bug 292450] Re: Broadcom STA/wl driver causes random kernel panics

2009-02-17 Thread Gilles Schintgen
I've just realized that I'm in fact not using the normal 386 build, but
the special lpia-architecture used in the netbook remix. So now I'm
wondering if I should file a separate bug report for the netbook remix
or if somebody could mark the netbook-remix as being also affected by
this issue. (I installed my system by booting from a USB key loaded with
the current Canonical-provided UNR-image: http://oem-
images.canonical.com/unr/unr-1.0.1.img)

Is it normal that the Broadcom module
(/lib/modules/2.6.24-19-lpia/volatile/wl.ko)
doesn't belong to any package (as per dpkg -S)?

Are there any updated packages for lpia that I have overlooked?

What would be needed to compile a newer version of the module myself?
(I'm relatively new to Ubuntu, but occasionally applied patches &
compiled the kernel on my Gentoo boxes.)

I'm sorry if some of this shouldn't belong here, I'm slightly confused
by the hundreds of intertwined projects and the various package and
distribution versions.

Anyway, thanks a lot for taking care of this issue!

[Bug 219382] Re: fsck not run on boot if on battery power

2009-02-17 Thread Gilles Schintgen
@Scott: So where should this be discussed?

In my humble opinion this is a serious matter which is being downplayed
by having it marked as WONTFIX. Now, I understand that technically
speaking it's the design that's broken rather than the implementation,
but the end result is the same: the current behaviour is endangering
users' data. (Especially when they're experiencing random hard lockups
due to the crappy Broadcom wl driver.)

I'm quite astonished that I have to manually edit the init.d scripts
just to make sure I'm not putting my data at risk when booting after
something unexpected happens.

[Bug 292450] Re: Broadcom STA/wl driver causes random kernel panics

2009-02-14 Thread Gilles Schintgen
I can confirm this bug on a Lenovo Ideapad S10e (which has a BCM4312
802.11b/g [14e4:4315] built in). When the wl module is loaded the system
randomly locks up: no mouse input, no keyboard input, even sysrq is
ignored, it's completely dead.

I'm using a fresh install of the netbook remix (the 1.0.1-img file based
on hardy). The system is up-to-date. As far as I am concerned, this bug
is definitely *NOT* fixed in hardy (except if the netbook-
remix.archive.canonical repositories were all outdated compared to the
normal hardy repos).

[Bug 59695] Re: default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks

2007-10-27 Thread Gilles Schintgen
@Blue

Parking does not stress the disc's surface but rather the head movement
mechanics. Remember, parking must be fast enough to protect against
imminent damage. (Consider for example HP's HDAPS technology.) Thus
excessive load/unload cycles *are* stressful and *will* damage the
drive. Why else would the manufacturers specify minimum values in their
data sheets?

Gilles

[Bug 59695] Re: default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks

2007-10-27 Thread Gilles Schintgen
@Blue

Aren't there two slightly different but related problems?

The first one is about a nearly inaudible clicking which happens when
the heads are unloaded and which is the reason I filed this report
(since it'd be killing my drive, slowly but inevitably). It doesn't
cause any noticeable delays when the heads are loaded again.

The second one is true spindown which causes annoying delays when the
drive is spun up again. (And which also causes wear and tear on the
mechanical parts of the drive.) Wouldn't that be bug 17216?

Regards,

Gilles

[Bug 59695] Re: default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks

2007-10-27 Thread Gilles Schintgen
@ Blue:

As far as I know the Load_Cycle_Count (i.e. this bug) is all about head
parking and not about spinning the drive down. And head parking
definitely /is/ a problem since the manufacturers usually give a maximum
of 300,000 or 600,000 cycles (depending on the drive or its year of
construction) in their specifications.

[Bug 59695] Re: default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks

2007-07-29 Thread Gilles Schintgen
It seems that I completely forgot to publish my fix/workaroud. As far as
I remember I did two things:

1) I added the following lines to my hdparm.conf:
/dev/sda {
  apm = 255
}

2) I created a file /etc/acpi/resume.d/99-stop-hitachi-madness.sh
with the following contents:
#!/bin/sh
hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda

I hope this helps.

As far as I can tell, all Lenovo 3000 C200 laptops are also affected by this
bug. As reported on http://lenovo.dropshock.com/archives/fixing-sound/
upgrading to a newer alsa version fixes this issue.
If I'm not mistaken this is the relevant alsa bug:

(at least http://www.linlap.com/wiki/Lenovo+3000+C200 is pointing there)

Hopefully this fix finds its way in one of the next updates.

[Bug 59695] Re: default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks

2007-05-11 Thread Gilles Schintgen
Please increase the importance of this issue. I'm really concerned about
my disk's health.

I was noticing some clicking but didn't think much about it since I
"fixed" this issue a long time ago. Only now it occurred to me that
maybe some update overwrote my changes.

Unfortunately this seems to be the case. Here's the current stats from my disk
(the thinkpad is from august 2006!):
192 Power-Off_Retract_Count 0x0032 100 100 000Old_age Always
- 7143426

Over 7 MILLION retracts! I'm wondering how long it will hold. I just
find it curious that "value" is still at "100" whereas the threshold
(for failure) is "000".

[Bug 46700] Re: xorg.conf - synaptics touchpad misdetected?

2006-11-18 Thread Gilles Schintgen
I've got a similar issue with Edgy on a Lenovo 3000 C100.

On a fresh installation of edgy, the touchpad was misconfigured. In fact there
was only a mouse input section:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Configured Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "CorePointer"
Option "Device""/dev/input/mice"
Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true"
EndSection

and some wacom devices which I don't have.

I had to manually add a synaptics section (generated by dpkg-reconfigure)
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Synaptics Touchpad"
Driver "synaptics"
Option "SendCoreEvents""true"
Option "Device""/dev/psaux"
Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
Option "HorizScrollDelta" "0"
EndSection

and modify the ServerLayout accordingly.
Now touchpad scrolling works.

Maybe this is due to the fact that a USB mouse was plugged in during the
installation? Anyway the installer completely missed the touchpad.

I'm having a similar problem with kpdf (in Gentoo, but they're also using a

See http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=131296 for more details.

According to http://www.cups.org/doc-1.1/overview.html cups is also
using xpdf code to interpret the pdf file. This could explain the
similar behaviour in both cases.

But only if laptop mode is enabled.
However in my case laptop mode is still _disabled_
in /etc/default/acpi-support. So, if I'm understanding the power.sh script
correctly it's _not_ this script which causes these frequent load cycles.
Hence my original report was wrong. Sorry about that.

Some more investigation led me to the following page:
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_hard_drive_clicking
It seems that Hitachi is using some quite aggressive power management.

I'm not sure what to do about this report. If it really turns out to be a
hardware problem it should probably be closed.

[Bug 59695] Re: [Bug 59695] Re: default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks

2006-09-10 Thread Gilles Schintgen
> I can confirm this behavior with my T43
Thanks for confirming. So now we'll have to determine sane default values.
I did some very unscientific tests using the command

smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sda | grep 193; hdparm -B 180 /dev/sda; sleep 600; \
smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sda | grep 193; hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda

and continuing to work normally. After 10 minutes I checked the output.

Here are some values:
-B 128 -> 23 cycles in 10 minutes
-B 160 -> 29 in 10'
-B 180 ->  0 in 10'
-B 196 ->  0 in 10'
-B 200 ->  0 in 10'

So even -B 160 leads to 3 cycles per minute (180 per hour), leading to a
lifespan of 600,000/180/24=139 days (of continuous battery powered use).
Note that only a few years ago 300,000 load/unload cycles was a common value.

What is remarkable is the sharp drop between 180 and 196. Could somebody else
report some values for his system?

Does anyone know how the -B parameter is interpreted or is that left up to the
device?

[Bug 59695] default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks

2006-09-09 Thread Gilles Schintgen
Public bug reported:

When switching to battery power, /etc/acpi/power.sh issues the command
hdparm -B 1 to all block devices. This leads to extremely frequent load
cycles. For example, my new thinkpad has already done well over 7000
load cycles -- in only 100 hours. That's at least one unloading per
minute. Googling for "load unload cycles notebook OR laptop" shows that
most laptop drives handle up to 600,000 such cycles. As these values
clearly show, this issue is of high importance and should be fixed
sooner rather than later.

Please see for yourself how often your drive is load cycling:
smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sda
(This command is for an SATA drive; you'll need to install the smartmontools
package first.)

See also http://paul.luon.net/journal/hacking/BrokenHDDs.html for a
rather dramatic account of the effects the current default values may
have.

Just in case the load/unload timeout depends on the specific laptop or disk
model, here are my system specifications:

[Bug 43052] Re: OpenGL viewport cut-off with 915gm graphics

2006-09-07 Thread Gilles Schintgen
I'm also having OpenGL problems with my 915GM graphics (Thinkpad Z60m).
The symptoms are as reported: viewport cut-off in various apps, in
google earth: wrong viewport and messed up graphics.

So I decided to give the compiz repository a try. First I only updated
the i810 driver, logged out, restarted X, logged in again. Unfortunately
acceleration was now broken (as reported by googleearth).

I thought that maybe this driver depended on newer mesa-libs, so I did a full
update in adept. Now OpenGL is completely broken. glxgears fails with:
$ glxgears
glxgears: intel_ioctl.c:62: intelEmitIrqLocked: Assertion `((*(int
*)intel->driHwLock) & ~0x4000U) == (0x8000U|intel->hHWContext)' failed.
Aborted

Google Earth gives the following error message:
do_wait: drmWaitVBlank returned -1, IRQs don't seem to be working correctly.
Try running with LIBGL_THROTTLE_REFRESH and LIBL_SYNC_REFRESH unset.
(and it's *extremely* slow, much slower than with software rendering)

Rebooting doesn't help.

So, will this be in one of the next dapper kernel updates?
That would be great!

BTW there are other models which need to be whitelisted. See bug 44976.

I think it should be OK, the DMI of the Z60m is still referring to IBM:

 SMBIOS 2.33 present.
Handle 0x0001, DMI type 1, 25 bytes.

> This sounds similar as bug 40808 (HP nw8240 with ATI FireGL V5000).
Contrary to bug 40808 the resolution seems to be correct, at least the cursor
isn't stretched.

I'd also like to add that sometimes the display shows the correct screen
contents for a fraction of a second. After this short flash it becomes black
again and finally it shows the messed up screen contents. So it seems that
some initialization is actually breaking things.

[Bug 43620] Re: hdaps with a z60m and sata disk not working

2006-08-22 Thread Gilles Schintgen
So, in fact, the problem has more to do with patching the kernel than with
SATA? In this case, I'd say this is more or less a duplicate of bug #53927.

[Bug 57315] Re: loading hdaps fails on a Thinkpad Z60m

Oops, I forgot to check the syslog:

hdaps: supported laptop not found!

So, please add the Z60m to the in-kernel whitelist. See also

[Bug 57147] Re: Screen is garbled after lid close & open on Thinkpad Z60m

2006-08-22 Thread Gilles Schintgen
I played around a bit with "xset dpms force off" and "... on" but couldn't
reproduce the garbled screen.
After manually turning off the screen, using the touchpad or pressing a key
turns the screen on again without any display corruption.

So either those two commands don't correspond exactly to those used by
acpi-support or the action of closing the lid does more than just
notifying ACPI.

[Bug 57144] Re: add Thinkpad (Intel Graphics) to ACPI_SLEEP whitelist

2006-08-22 Thread Gilles Schintgen
No, actually such a double switch would be needed for lid close/open but
it's *not necessary* for suspend/resume to work properly.

In fact I'm very happy that all the major ACPI stuff works right out of
the box. Thanks a lot!

[Bug 57147] Re: Screen is garbled after lid close & open on Thinkpad Z60m

2006-08-22 Thread Gilles Schintgen
No, it doesn't solve the problem. This isn't surprising since the
DOUBLE_CONSOLE_SWITCH is only done when resuming from suspend. (At least that's
what grep told me...)
However suspend/resume works fine with and without this option. It's only the
lid that's problematic.

[Bug 57147] Screen is garbled after lid close & open on Thinkpad Z60m

2006-08-21 Thread Gilles Schintgen
Public bug reported:

On my Z60m with Intel Graphics closing the lid blanks the screen, but after
reopening the lid the display is completely messed up (with the exception of
the mouse cursor). Switching to a VC and back to X fixes this issue. Maybe
lid.sh could do this automatically.
Note that there are no problems when resuming from sleep or hibernate.
