[Bug 1554652] Re: nautilus-share broken with libpam-smbpass removed
Forgot to mention: this is with Ubuntu 20.04. And since I upgraded my main system 14.04->16.04->18.04->20.04 I also confirmed the brokenness in a VM with a fresh 20.04 setup, just to convince myself that this issue actually happens out-of-the-box. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1554652 Title: nautilus-share broken with libpam-smbpass removed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nautilus-share/+bug/1554652/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1554652] Re: nautilus-share broken with libpam-smbpass removed
Wow, this is a frustating issue! It took me hours to figure out, simply because I couldn't believe what most solutions for older Ubuntu releases told me: it's broken out of the box and I need to fiddle with samba internals. Yes a simple "sudo smbpasswd -a myusername" is sufficient to make it work (with authenticated shares). But there is no indication whatsoever in the GUI for this! It even proposes to install samba in the first place! It unequivocally passes the message "This is a nice GUI and it takes care of this. No need to worry." But the exact opposite is the case. IMHO this is worse than having no GUI. Without a GUI I know that I just have to do a quick google search and follow some instructions (set up samba...) and all is well in a few minutes or half an hour. At least it's straightforward. I'm a seasoned Linux user, but the current GUI sent me in all the wrong directions. It actively suggests that it takes care of everything, so I thought it'd be highly counterproductive to get in its way and edit samba's configuration myself. (Too many cooks...) I see that there are longstanding technical issues with the connection to PAM and those may be hard to fix. I totally accept that! But please, please, at the very least add some tooltip or popup dialog or text label (or modify an existing one) that informs the user that he is expected to manually add a samba user&password!

Are there any updated packages for lpia that I have overlooked? What would be needed to compile a newer version of the module myself? (I'm relatively new to Ubuntu, but occasionally applied patches & compiled the kernel on my Gentoo boxes.) @Blue Aren't there two slightly different but related problems? The first one is about a nearly inaudible clicking which happens when the heads are unloaded and which is the reason I filed this report (since it'd be killing my drive, slowly but inevitably). It doesn't cause any noticeable delays when the heads are loaded again. The second one is true spindown which causes annoying delays when the drive is spun up again. As far as I remember I did two things: 1) I added the following lines to my hdparm.conf: /dev/sda { apm = 255 } 2) I created a file /etc/acpi/resume.d/99-stop-hitachi-madness.sh with the following contents: #!/bin/sh hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda I hope this helps. -- default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/59695 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

As far as I can tell, all Lenovo 3000 C200 laptops are also affected by this bug. As reported on http://lenovo.dropshock.com/archives/fixing-sound/ upgrading to a newer alsa version fixes this issue. Please increase the importance of this issue. I'm really concerned about my disk's health. I was noticing some clicking but didn't think much about it since I "fixed" this issue a long time ago. Only now it occurred to me that maybe some update overwrote my changes. Unfortunately this seems to be the case. [Bug 46700] Re: xorg.conf - synaptics touchpad misdetected?
I've got a similar issue with Edgy on a Lenovo 3000 C100. On a fresh installation of edgy, the touchpad was misconfigured. In fact there was only a mouse input section: Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Configured Mouse" Driver "mouse" Option "CorePointer" Option "Device""/dev/input/mice" Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" Option "Emulate3Buttons" "true" EndSection and some wacom devices which I don't have. I had to manually add a synaptics section (generated by dpkg-reconfigure) Section "InputDevice" Identifier "Synaptics Touchpad" Driver "synaptics" Option "SendCoreEvents""true" Option "Device""/dev/psaux" Option "Protocol" "auto-dev" Option "HorizScrollDelta" "0" EndSection and modify the ServerLayout accordingly. Now touchpad scrolling works. Maybe this is due to the fact that a USB mouse was plugged in during the installation? However in my case laptop mode is still _disabled_ in /etc/default/acpi-support. So, if I'm understanding the power.sh script correctly it's _not_ this script which causes these frequent load cycles. Hence my original report was wrong. Sorry about that. Some more investigation led me to the following page: http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Problem_with_hard_drive_clicking It seems that Hitachi is using some quite aggressive power management. [Bug 59695] Re: [Bug 59695] Re: default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks
> I can confirm this behavior with my T43 Thanks for confirming. So now we'll have to determine sane default values. I did some very unscientific tests using the command smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sda | grep 193; hdparm -B 180 /dev/sda; sleep 600; \ smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sda | grep 193; hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda and continuing to work normally. After 10 minutes I checked the output. Here are some values: -B 128 -> 23 cycles in 10 minutes -B 160 -> 29 in 10' -B 180 -> 0 in 10' -B 196 -> 0 in 10' -B 200 -> 0 in 10' So even -B 160 leads to 3 cycles per minute (180 per hour), leading to a lifespan of 600,000/180/24=139 days (of continuous battery powered use). Note that only a few years ago 300,000 load/unload cycles was a common value. What is remarkable is the sharp drop between 180 and 196. Could somebody else report some values for his system? [Bug 59695] default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks
Public bug reported: When switching to battery power, /etc/acpi/power.sh issues the command hdparm -B 1 to all block devices. This leads to extremely frequent load cycles. For example, my new thinkpad has already done well over 7000 load cycles -- in only 100 hours. That's at least one unloading per minute. Googling for "load unload cycles notebook OR laptop" shows that most laptop drives handle up to 600,000 such cycles. As these values clearly show, this issue is of high importance and should be fixed sooner rather than later. Please see for yourself how often your drive is load cycling: smartctl -d ata -a /dev/sda (This command is for an SATA drive; you'll need to install the smartmontools package first.) See also http://paul.luon.net/journal/hacking/BrokenHDDs.html for a rather dramatic account of the effects the current default values may have. I'm also having OpenGL problems with my 915GM graphics (Thinkpad Z60m). The symptoms are as reported: viewport cut-off in various apps, in google earth: wrong viewport and messed up graphics. So I decided to give the compiz repository a try. First I only updated the i810 driver, logged out, restarted X, logged in again. Unfortunately acceleration was now broken (as reported by googleearth). I thought that maybe this driver depended on newer mesa-libs, so I did a full update in adept. Now OpenGL is completely broken. glxgears fails with: $ glxgears glxgears: intel_ioctl.c:62: intelEmitIrqLocked: Assertion `((*(int *)intel->driHwLock) & ~0x4000U) == (0x8000U|intel->hHWContext)' failed. [Bug 57147] Re: Screen is garbled after lid close & open on Thinkpad Z60m
I played around a bit with "xset dpms force off" and "... on" but couldn't reproduce the garbled screen. After manually turning off the screen, using the touchpad or pressing a key turns the screen on again without any display corruption. So either those two commands don't correspond exactly to those used by acpi-support or the action of closing the lid does more than just notifying ACPI. -- Screen is garbled after lid close & open on Thinkpad Z60m https://launchpad.net/bugs/57147 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 57144] Re: add Thinkpad (Intel Graphics) to ACPI_SLEEP whitelist
No, actually such a double switch would be needed for lid close/open but it's *not necessary* for suspend/resume to work properly. In fact I'm very happy that all the major ACPI stuff works right out of the box. Thanks a lot! -- add Thinkpad (Intel Graphics) to ACPI_SLEEP whitelist https://launchpad.net/bugs/57144 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 57147] Re: Screen is garbled after lid close & open on Thinkpad Z60m
No, it doesn't solve the problem. This isn't surprising since the DOUBLE_CONSOLE_SWITCH is only done when resuming from suspend. (At least that's what grep told me...) However suspend/resume works fine with and without this option. It's only the lid that's problematic. -- Screen is garbled after lid close & open on Thinkpad Z60m https://launchpad.net/bugs/57147 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 57147] Screen is garbled after lid close & open on Thinkpad Z60m
Public bug reported: On my Z60m with Intel Graphics closing the lid blanks the screen, but after reopening the lid the display is completely messed up (with the exception of the mouse cursor). Switching to a VC and back to X fixes this issue. Maybe lid.sh could do this automatically. Note that there are no problems when resuming from sleep or hibernate. ** Affects: acpi-support (Ubuntu) Importance: Untriaged Status: Unconfirmed -- Screen is garbled after lid close & open on Thinkpad Z60m https://launchpad.net/bugs/57147 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
