[Bug 1530648] Re: Halt command in UEFI reboots

2016-01-22 Thread Goh Lip
Thanks. Tested 2.02~beta2-35 and confirm halt works in uefi.
Also in bios-legacy, halt command works completely to shutdown.
Prior to this, in bios-legacy, 'halt' hangs and does not reboot.

So confirm this update fixes both uefi and bios-legacy to complete
computer shutdown.

[Bug 1530648] [NEW] Halt command in UEFI reboots

2016-01-03 Thread Goh Lip
Public bug reported:

Issuing "halt" command in grub prompt reboots the computer instead of
shutting down completely. This happens only in UEFI systems and not in
bios-legacy which works as it should. Computer does power down but
restarts again.

Also, this happens in some mother boards but not others.
Affects the following Ubuntu grub versions - (all current) but tested on
Kubuntu Xenial - 2.02-beta2-32ubuntu1
Kubuntu Wily - 2.02-beta2-29ubuntu0.2

Machine tested is..
Machine: Mobo: ASUSTeK model: P8B75-V v: Rev X.0x
Bios: American Megatrends v: 0414 date: 04/24/2012

There is a fix for this in
http://git.savannah.gnu.org/cgit/grub.git/commit/?id=aa7bb4607bb799b2790ea008bcfd8d6ca0a6d752

Would appreciate if Ubuntu update its grub version.
Thanks.

[Bug 247960] Re: Grub long sequential reads are extremely slow from USB2.0 HDD/FLASH drives

2014-05-08 Thread Goh Lip
Adam, you're right in your original post that initrd is the cause of the delay.
Other non-Ubuntu based distros do not have the long 50 secs wait to boot OS at
usb. (same kernel)
It's just 13 secs vs 50secs. (haven't tried Debian distros).

One would think after 5 years, something ought to be done about it.

Commenting out the kdm line (Scott James Remnant) in pre-stop script
behaves exactly like booting up grub without 'splash'. It boots alright
but without the plymouth splash (small ubuntu text with 5 red dots).
Shutting down has the plymouth screen, like booting without splash.

2010-03-16 Thread Goh Lip
Added Scott's ppa to repo, rebooted. same as before (boots to lucid okay, no
plymouth splash).
Rebooted to be sure, and (luck of luck), the plymouth splash appears with the
disk check (for 30 mounts).
And to make doubly sure, rebooted one more time, (of course disk check will not
be there); the plymouth splash did not appear as before, but noticed a flicker
of very dim light, (could it be the plymouth splash appears but was too fast
for me to notice?). Noted there is no time entry in plymouth.conf.

Attaching new plymouth.conf based on Scott's ppa just to be sure.

Thanks again.

Booted okay with my plymouth uninstalled. Then reinstalled plymouth, and

[Bug 537853] Re: kdm does not start

2010-03-12 Thread Goh Lip
A better way to boot 2.6.32-16 is to modify grub.cfg to remove splash and quiet.
Since this had happened earlier in Karmic alpha, just wondering if this is
something unavoidable.
(not a criticism, just trying to understand). If this is due to programming
constraints, that is quite alright as alpha users/testers should have some
awareness to handle this. Thanks.

Public bug reported:

lucid 64 alpha

After upgrade to 2.6.32-16-generic, boots to blank screen.
Have to ctl + alt + prt scr + k
or boot using recovery and then at prompt sudo kdm start

Similar to bug 437067 on karmic alpha which I reported on bug 437283

However 2.6.32-15-generic boots okay.

[Bug 491162] Re: gdm does not start X unless remove tty-device-added KERNEL=tty7 from upstart gdm.conf

2010-01-07 Thread Goh Lip
No, Johan, don't think it is related to bug 495100. It's just that
sometimes auto login works, most times it didn't. But I recall a warning
that explicitly states that autologin does not work when I downloaded
alpha1. So I did not file bug for it. But I always reset my locale so
that Thunderbird3 can set my date format to dd/mm/ otherwise it uses
mm/dd/. I am not sure if this has anything to do with the issue at
hand. But Karmic/Hardy Kubuntu is not affected by it.

Also commenting out # and tty-device-added KERNEL=tty7 does not help
either.

Thanks for looking into this. It is of course, not a show stopper and I
may do a clean install for alpha3 if problem persists. By the way, my
version is upgraded (continually) from alpha3 Karmic. Thought I better
add a comment in case it may be important for the developers to be aware
of. I do have 'production' partitions for final version Karmic and Hardy
kde 3.5.10 (s-linked from same firefox, thunderbird, etc config files)
so if it is not critical, I have no problem with it. I'm trying to help
whatever way possible.

Thanks again. Appreciate what you guys are doing.

After upgrading karmic 64 to kde 4.3.3 from kde 4.3.2 through ppa,
kaffeine does not play, in fact, it gums up the system, memory, both cpu

[Bug 428493] Re: Extreme slow boot

2009-09-24 Thread Goh Lip
Thanks, Scott and Robbie, I had just downloaded and reinstalled Alpha6
in the same partition about 2 hours ago and fully updated and uploaded,
so I am unable to replicate my previous problem now. If it helps,
Robbie, I am sure the sudo apt-get update and upgrade showed no packages
to install or being held back. Scott, sorry I don't know anything about
bootcharts to be able to comment. I did install ppa-chromium-daily
though, and firefox 3.0 as well as 3.5 (when it was Shirotake); not sure
if this affects anything.

My new installation at alpha6 has absolutely no problem, autologin or
otherwise. Reinstalled firefox and chromium AFTER all updates done. I
can only surmise that the previous problem was that I started at alpha2
and update/upgrade till alpha6. I am not sure why this is so, but my
previous experience with alpha Jaunty updates/upgrades were also not too
smooth. I update/upgrade with aptitude update and aptitude safe-upgrade.
When I had this problem, I tried apt-get update/apt-get upgrade, and
that is why I can answer Robbie's question with certainty.

Thank you guys for your attention, wish you all the best and you did a great
job in Karmic.
Regards.

[Bug 428493] Re: Extreme slow boot

2009-09-21 Thread Goh Lip
I have sata hd, but I think problem is that I started with Karmic alpha2 and
update and upgrade till alpha6. I have this suspicion because the usplash is
still there, which I understand it shouldn't be there for alpha6.
When I enabled passwordless autologin, the usplash will take about 3 to 5 mins
before booting up. Otherwise, it will take less than 10 secs. My updates are up
to date, have even tried update full-upgrade in netroot, recovery mode, but no
change. Also suspect network manager is not updated as ethernet icon shows 'not
managed'.
Various error messages appear after grub screen and before login screen.
Something like

-udev[362] inotify_add_watch (6, (null), 10) failed bad address.
-udev[362] =name=%K in superflious and breaks kernel supplied names...

==/lib/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules:3
==/lib/udev/rules.d/50-udev-default.rules:4

and more

Appreciate your input.
Thanks

[Bug 430465] [NEW] network not connecting

2009-09-15 Thread Goh Lip
Public bug reported:

Karmic 64
Kde 4.3.1
Linux 2.6.31-10-generic

Latest update of 16 Sept 2009 disables wired ethernet connection eth0.

Need to comment out line #iface eth0 inet dhcp in interfaces of /etc/network to
reenable networking.
Other usual methods, (ifconfig, ifup, networkmanager) were not successful.

[Bug 406774] Re: Grub2 did not update uuid changes

2009-08-25 Thread Goh Lip
I am not sure if this information is important, but after kernel change
to 2.6.31-7-generic, there is now 2 entries of old and new UUID for the
Hardy sda8 partition.

Under header of Ubuntu Linux, it shows the new and correct UUID.
Under header of Debian GNU/Linux, it shows the old and wrong UUID.

Since there is an entry of the correct UUID, it is not a showstopper for
me, but I thought you may want to know about this.

Regards.

[Bug 391044] Re: grub2 update adds --no-floppy to search lines

2009-08-16 Thread Goh Lip
I do not have any problem as per my post on 2009-07-16. The grub.cfg still has
the --no-floppy lines but it boots okay. This works even if that (Karmic)
boot/grub is not set to mbr as this was the case in mine. I had a dedicated
'first grub' (on grub2) which boots to the Karmic grub config. I would also
think it wouldn't be a problem for others using Gag or other boot methods to
boot into Karmic as well, but it would be best to confirm with them. Felix and
Duncan mentioned they are using Gag.
As for me, I consider the problem resolved.

Thanks.

[Bug 406774] Re: Grub2 did not update uuid changes

2009-08-11 Thread Goh Lip
After latest update of Aug 11th, grub.cfg was regenerated and the old
(and wrong) uuid number was reinstated for the Hardy partition. I had
previously manually edited the grub.cfg to reflect the correct uuid to
enable me to boot into Hardy.

[Bug 406774] Re: Grub2 did not update uuid changes

2009-08-11 Thread Goh Lip
Colin, attached is file for grub.cfg, parted and blkid.
Hardy partition is sda8 (hd0,8)-in grub2 naming convention.
Note old uuid for hardy is 4afcadf1-b2a6-465f-bb67-c9d7d5103a2f
and new uuid is 606840d0-3e10-4e6b-9aba-c445d082832b

Repeat, both old and new Hardy is on grub2, not grub legacy and in same
partition.

Colin, thanks for response.

[Bug 406774] [NEW] Grub2 did not update uuid changes

2009-07-30 Thread Goh Lip
Public bug reported:

Karmic 64
Linux kubuntu 2.6.31-4-

Reinstalled Hardy in another partition and installed grub2 in Hardy.
Both old and new Hardy have grub2 installed and in the same partition.
Uuid for Hardy was changed following the reinstallation.
Booted into Karmic and updated grub by 'sudo grub-mkconfig'
Noticed entry for Hardy was not updated and retains old uuid number.
Tried also 'sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg'
Hardy remains unupdated in Karmic grub.cfg

[Bug 391044] Re: grub2 update adds --no-floppy to search lines

2009-07-17 Thread Goh Lip
Yes, it still has the --no-floppy in grub.cfg. But it is boots okay now even
with this.
Sorry I didn't make this clearer. Also converted my '1st grub' partition and
my Hardy from grub legacy to grub2.

All works fine. Interesting though, Hardy grub2 does not contain the
--no-floppy lines, and the /etc/default/grub does not contain
GRUB_TERMINAL=console line. Manually adding it does not make it
hidden either.

Last update of grup-pc on 24th June still needs --no-floppy to be
removed from grub.cfg. (see my bug 391028). Additionally, need to wait
at least 15 secs before entering grub entry, (Set time out to at least
15 secs); otherwise it will go to shell mode.

[Bug 391028] [NEW] grub2 fails to launch

2009-06-23 Thread Goh Lip
Public bug reported:

karmic 64
linux 2.6.30-9
grub2

Grub2 fails to launch any OS.
Rectified by modifying grub.cfg of the lines
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 4afcadf1-b2a6-..
to
search --fs-uuid --set 4afcadf1-b2a6-..
ie., by removing --no-floppy

Note: this was done by launching my hardy partition through a dedicated boot
partition(grub legacy)
and modifying the grub.cfg of the karmic partition.
