[Bug 1969243] Re: gdm 42.0-1ubuntu4 no longer shows Wayland option

2022-04-17 Thread Gone fishing
I have the same problem with an amdgpu. The problem goes away if I
rename 61-gdm.rules.

[Bug 1846842] Re: the upgrade tool from 19.04 to 19.10 failed badly

2020-08-21 Thread Gone fishing
Just had a similar experience running do-release-upgrade -d from a
terminal and upgrading from 18.04 to 20.04. The upgrade ran until after
the packages had been downloaded, the screen went grey I couldn't change
to a TTY. I was forced to reboot. On reboot the machine could not reboot
normally however, I could start in an old kernel I the used a TTY to run
the command dpkg --configure -a. All the remaining packages (several
thousand) installed and after running apt-get autoremove the upgrade
completed satisfactorily.

[Bug 1054776] Re: Don't include remote searches in the home lens

2012-09-23 Thread Gone fishing
No this isn't acceptable - I don't want all my local searches, HUD sent
to a remote server Amazon or even Canonical. I don't want this even if
its safe and properly encrypted - this is my desktop. One of the reasons
I hate using Windows is Adware / Spyware - We get this and next it wont
just be the Dash but adverts popping up everywhere and our data being
shared to all and sundry.

No problem with a shopping lens - If I use it its my choice but on the
home lens no way.

I like Ubuntu, Unity and generally the direction it is heading but this
might cause me to change distro.

Thanks mad biologist

I found a way of stopping the reporting and making the system usable -
so I think I'll just wait a month and install 11.10 and am glad the
patch will be included. No the laptop doesn't have a HDMI connector

Same problem in 11.10 but work round much more problematic due to no

[Bug 796331] [NEW] Launcher and the Dash will not start Crossover applications

2011-06-12 Thread Gone fishing
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-desktop

Running crossover pro 9.0 installing using a deb file the installation
works perfectly as does installing MS office. The menus in the Gnome
classic desktop work as they should. However, with the Unity desktop the
all applications menu in the dash does not show Crossover Office or
installed Windows applications (as it does in Gnome classic). If the
applications are found by displaying all the installed applications the
icons wont start the crossover applications or Windows applications,
similarly they wont work if dragged to the launcher.

I found a work round see

2011-04-29 Thread Gone fishing
I'm having the same problem with a GeForce 7300 LE graphics card.

This is with both the 64 and 32bit versions of 11.04. Not only is Unity
not working but also classic with desktop effects enabled, tty is also
scrambled. I've tried the 173 Driver with the 32 bit of 11.04 version
but it's just as bad

Yep that looks like it.

It seems to be a bug but I found this in the bugs and it looks like so
solution https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mdadm/+bug/120375 . I
seem to remember being dumped at some thing like ram file system screen,

However, I gave up and used Opensuse, which, I can't say I like as much
as Ubuntu, particularly on the Desktop (but this is a server), every
thing worked, however, (including the RAID) without too much struggle
and I am not
an ubergeek.

Any way good luck

 Does my case look similar?

 I've installed 7.10 amd64 on a Intel Server System 1500 with 2 SAS
drives, which unfortunately has a SW raid system incompatible with open
OS', so I'm trying to use Linux mdadm. The first partition on both
drives was created and marked as bootable, and raid autodetect. The
installation goes well and the system boots ok on /dev/md0, and
/proc/mdstat and mdadm -D show everything's in sync. After shutting down
the system and unplugging one of the drives -- it doesn't matter which
-- the systems waits for 2-3 minutes at the loading, please wait'
prompt, then spits out some errors like stdin: error 0 and then the
output similar to what happens when you run modprobe with no arguments,
and some more no such file or directory regarding parts under the root
fs (like /dev/ /sys/ /proc etc.), eventually dropping into a busybox
 shell.

I also tried running this on both drives, with no effect whatsoever.

However if I test it by unplugging a hard drive it wont boot

I've also tried creating a small non Raid /boot partition, but again if
I unplug a drive the system wont boot (grub starts fails to mount the
raid)
