[Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2013-03-30 Thread Greg Eden
@ C Jenkins

There have been three updates to the gvfs packages in Raring this week.
We cannot know if this issue is being directly addressed or it is just
natural trickle down. The bug remains unassigned so the obvious
conclusion is that the updates are coming from upstream somewhere. We
all agree this is a very serious issue, and it needs to be fixed in
older versions as well. If no one is fixing Quantal then all we can do
is push on to Raring and hope. My Raring Gnome Shell is now stable
although the updates keep coming and the release is now only a few weeks
away.

Finally, for me - but apparently not everyone, the issue is fixed in
Raring with the caveat that I run Gnome Shell not Unity.

[Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2013-03-25 Thread Greg Eden
@Gustavo The only other thing I can think of is that I do have all of
quantal-proposed installed. Plus my system is not your system, so just
because mine works with my NAS does not mean it will work for everybody.

We really need proper developers to fix this issue. The best I can say
is that for my hardware and my network and my NAS, mine seems to be
operating as it should with updated Quantal (proposed) and the latest
updated Raring snapshot. There may well be other libs that are part of
the overall issue, not just gvfs and Samba.

[Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2013-03-24 Thread Greg Eden
@Gustavo You probably need backports active in updates. Simplest
solution is to install Synaptic, start it up and go to the Updates tab
and select backports. Then refresh and then do the updates.

Mine Quantal is a 32bit, so if you are 64bit it might just be a matter
of waiting a day.

I just updated an Xubuntu Quantal box with Nautilus. I just dumped about

choking. This is a very good sign.

Anyone else want to test and report? Especially streaming and Rhythymbox

[Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2013-03-17 Thread Greg Eden
Ubuntu is not really Debian based, most Raring packages are way ahead of
even Debian Experimental. Ubuntu uses deb packaging and the basic
Debian system layout but has long since ceased to be just a repackaged
Debian. I am currently installing Squeeze and will upgrade to Sid. I
will test and report back. This bug is enough to turn me into a KDE
user. Having said that on my main machine which was Ubuntu Gnome Remix
12.10 , upgraded to Raring and the Gnome PPA added then all updated to
running Gnome 3.7.91 (3.8 beta) manages to be free of this bug. On my
second machine Ubuntu Gnome 13.04 daily will not install properly with a
UEFI install and as I reported above an Xubuntu raring still has this
bug, even with Gnome PPA added.

The Debian install will not answer too many questions. It will probably
work as Debian is still on Gnome 3.4. The bug may be lurking upstream
waiting to float down and stuff everyone up.

[Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2013-03-17 Thread Greg Eden
Debian Sid is also free of this bug, but is way behind and still on
Gnome 3.4. My number two machine is working well with Samba and I am
going to leave it on Debian. I suspect the bug might still be lurking
upstream, but for the moment it is OK. I guess running Sid is no
different to going back to Ubuntu 12.04.

The option of just installing Dolphin and using it instead of Nautilus
is a workaround that works. No one is fixing this and it is not fixed in
Raring.

Enough from me.

[Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2013-03-17 Thread Greg Eden
@AndreK I am beginning to think there is no solution for Unity users.
The only two approaches that work at the moment are 1. to use Kubuntu
and use eg Amarok for music or 2. upgrade a 12.10 Gnome Remix to 13.04
and add the Gnome PPA and then upgrade the lot to Gnome Shell 3.8. I am
happily using Gnome Shell 3.8 and I just dumped 50gb of mp3s accross my
network to make sure it truly works. And it does. Unfortunately I am not
in a position to try Ubuntu Gnome 13.04 as the latest snapshot will not
install on my machine and I do not think running it in a VM is a real
test (maybe it is - worth a try for someone).

[Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2013-03-14 Thread Greg Eden
Bud,

The difference between your Raring and mine was my use of the Gnome PPA,
specifically Nautilus version 3.7.91

It might be worth updating a standard raring with the Gnome PPA active
and see what happens. I have no idea what might happen to Unity if you
do that as I am a Gnome user. One approach might be a Xubuntu Raring
install with the Gnome PPA active and then install Nautilus and Nautilus
Share.

If the solution turns out to be as simple as running the latest Nautilus
then that is good.

[Bug 1075923] Re: nautilus hangs copying large directories from a samba share

2013-03-04 Thread Greg Eden
As others have said this bug does not affect Kubuntu and Dolphin, and
you can use Dolphin on Gnome Shell or Xfce and it works as expected. I
have KDE installed in parallel with Gnome 3.6 and Xfce 4.10.

Other clues - It also appears to be an issue of the number of files
being transferred, not the volume of data. I can copy sixteen gig when
it is in 30 files, but any folder with hundreds or thousands of files
will choke.

[Bug 593226] Re: gnome panels suddenly have a 25 second delay after session load

2010-06-14 Thread Greg Eden
Affecting me as well.

Therre is a thread going in the forums. Seems to have started with an
update about two - three days ago.

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1506585highlight=gnome+slow+start

I also tried turning off all startup programs = no effect, still delay
of 20 seconds

I made a new user, no improvement.

If log out and log in again comes up straight away, issue manifests from
cold start.

Does not effect Kubuntu, but does effect Xubuntu as well. When I rejig
as Kubuntu everything starts and loads at normal speeds. With Xubuntu I
got the same delay before desktop appears.

Python programs seem to be taking a while to start as well, but could
just be my imagination.

Killed the clock, then one by one removed everything. The problem
remains.

I ran gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel to restore default
panel. Panel restored, but problem remains.

I have four machines running Ubuntu and it only affects one.

I am using a 2.6.34 kernel on two machines, one has the problem, the
other does not. So, that is not it.

This machine is using the Open Source ATI video driver the others are
not (Nvidia and Intel).

I have several PPAs active plus a few third party repos, and am now
thinking this is the source of my issues. It is not the Chromium daily
builds as that is active on all of my machines.

Anyone without third party repos have this issue?

I do not think it is anything to do with passwords. Mine has always been

As it does not effect Kubuntu it would have to be something Gnome GTK

As it also effects Xubuntu, then you would think GTK GDM

As it also happens with applets removed and most auto started apps
turned off then it gets tricky

None of the autostart programs was the culprit. Certificate and key
storage would not turn off, it just restores itself if you turn it off.

I reconfigured to use KDM as login manager and problem unchanged, GDM
unlikely candidate.

My dpkg log has a burst of activity over the last week, any of them
could be the cause. My thoughts on Python in earlier post were wrong, it
is starting normally. There was a Gnome Panel and panel Data update on

[Bug 31709] Re: Brasero, GNOME's burn:/// and K3b slow dvd burn speed

2010-05-17 Thread Greg Eden
Still an issue with Lucid, still a pain in the butt.

The solution is to use growisofs instead of wodim.

In k3b Settings - Configure k3b - Advanced - Show Advance Gui
elements

Restart k3b

next time when you go to burn something there will be a new menu in the
burn dialog called Writing App , change it from Auto to growisofs and
all of the slowness issues should evaporate.

This has plagued Ubuntu and Debian (and many other distros) users for
four years, time enough for it to be fixed.

Another way is to just select force unsafe operations in Settings -
Configure k3b - Advanced - Force unsafe operations which will override
the error that has been going on for four years, but perhaps leave you
open to other issues. Experiment with whatever media you use first to
make sure it works.

Hopefully this will help some with a workaround.

[Bug 555696] [NEW] Ripperx stops writing tags at 9 tracks

2010-04-05 Thread Greg Eden
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ripperx

using this package in Lucid i386 version to encode a disk to mp3s

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ripperx/2.7.2-3

When encoding a disk it works fine for tracks 1 to 9, it rips and
encodes tracks past 9 but does not write the id tag.

I grabbed the same version from Debian Sid and it installed without
protest and it functions correctly.

@836v

If you only want tor then you can bypass privoxy altogether. Just
Uninstall privoxy and set tor to use Socks5, 127.0.0.1 and port 9050. In
foxyproxy edit the setup to these settings and it will work without
privoxy.

[Bug 428048] Re: Can't open radio device

2009-10-29 Thread Greg Eden
I would not call this a bug, but agree the config should default to
radio0 as that is always what is created by the system (unless you have
multiple tuners).

What everyone has done since the dawn of time is go into the config and
change the device to radio0 on first use.

The bigger issue is that all FM Radio appears to be completely borked in
any Debian based distro using a 2.6.31 kernel.

Adding an FM radio plugin to Rhythmbox and using that as a player is the
only solution so far.

Also affects kradio, radio (ncurses) and gkrellm-radio

[Bug 422696] Re: gnomeradio doesn't work in 9.10

2009-10-28 Thread Greg Eden
It appears to be a general issue. My Winfast 2000XP has stopped working
as well, but not just Gnomeradio, also kradio, radio (ncurses), and
every other program I tried except

It does work in Rhythmbox.

I have to agree it is related to the 2.6.31 kernel - something not
compiled in? What does Rhythmbox do differently?

I also have a Winfast DTV2000H, same issue, works with Debian and 2.6.30
and Jaunty with a 2.6.30, but not with Karmic.

[Bug 427625] [NEW] privoxy not start at boot - karmic

2009-09-10 Thread Greg Eden
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: privoxy

Privoxy works fine when started from the command line, but fails to
start in the boot sequence. This was not an issue with Jaunty. I also
use Debian Sid and the same bug manifests there.

It may be that it is trying to start too soon in the boot sequence as it
relies on other services being running.

[Bug 274428] Re: Network Manager set DNS wrong for GSM network

2009-03-03 Thread Greg Eden
Until today (3/3/09) I was using Intrepid. I plug in my Huawei E169 and
it happily connects and changes to the appropriate DNS for my 3G
provider. In Intrepid I had updates, proposed and backports enabled.

Now I have upgraded to Jaunty and the DNS settings are not updated when
I insert the E169, it is still using the DNS from the ethernet
connection - now unplugged. I had to go into the settings of the Mobile
Broadband connection and edit the config and add the correct DNS
addresses. It now works fine and survives reboots. This appears to match
the above bug.

I had no issue in Intrepid, but the bug has reappeared in Jaunty. I have
replicated this issue on another laptop that I upgraded to Jaunty and
then reverted to Intrepid for other reasons.

thanks

Is this possibly an AppArmor issue?

Re: [Bug 288942] Re: clamd daemon fails to load

2008-10-27 Thread Greg Eden
Stephan,

I reinstalled as per instructions (also removing the previous fix of
using apparmor complain) and it does function correctly.

thank you

Greg

ps I was only loading clamd directly looking for errors

Stefan Lesicnik wrote:
 Hi,

I believe the fix for this is the addition of

   #include abstractions/nameservice

 in /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.clamd.

 To test this:

 - start from a clean base
 apt-get purge clamav clamav-base clamav-daemon
 rm -rf /var/lib/clamav

 - install clamav
 apt-get install clamav-daemon

check clamd is running (ps -afx or the like)
 process should be: /usr/sbin/clamd

Modify clamd to use TCP 3310 and bind to localhost
 Add

 TCPAddr localhost
 TCPSocket 3310

 to /etc/clamav/clamd.conf

 - Restart clamd
 /etc/init.d/clamav-daemon restart

This should segfault now due to the apparmor profile denying access to
tcp network related files (hosts, nsswitch resolve.conf etc)

 To resolve this

 Add

  #include abstractions/nameservice

 to /etc/apparmor.d/usr.sbin.clamd

 - Reload apparmor
 /etc/init.d/apparmor reload

 - Restart clamd
 /etc/init.d/clamav-daemon restart

 - This should now start correctly.

 clamdrib should also work correctly.

 aside
Please correct me if I am wrong, but decided 'capability setuid' in this
case is not required as clamdscan has the ability to call a file to scan with
the - option. ie. clamdscan - filename. which should run it in as the
current user, which i suspect clamdrib is doing therefore shouldnt be
 necessary to setuid.
 /aside

Greg - please note that calling clamd or sudo clamd as per your original
post is the incorrect way to start the daemon, as it should be started
as root via the init script (/etc/init.d/clamav-daemon) which will
result in the application dropping privileges to the clamav user. You
 should be doing clamd --config-file=/etc/clamav/clamd.conf

AppArmor is more important anyway, clamav is more for the Windows
machines of other people.

It's not relevant. All we need is to figure out the right Apparmor
profile. I doubut if we'll be able to get it fixed before release, but
there is a new clamav release 3 Nov that we are going to try and get into
the intrepid-updates. We've got a good shot for fixing it there.

[Bug 288942] [NEW] clamd daemon fails to load

find that clamd fails to load

OR as su

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo clamd

If I change permissions on the log file loading clamd causes a segfault.

I have completely removed and reinstalled several times - same result.

Until two days ago I was using Debian Sid on this system and clamav was
working fine.

thinking load order is an issue. I will try a reboot.
