A recent update has made this work flawlessly on every boot. No idea which
update it was, but we're good now.

[Bug 1577113] [NEW] 50/50 chance for BCM43602 to come up correctly during boot

2016-05-01 Thread Greg Taylor
Public bug reported:

My BCM43602 has a 50/50 chance during boot of ever becoming "ready" and
pulling an IP address. The problem seems to be this "link is not ready"
and "already exists" loop. The log I sent was one of the cases where
things eventually worked. If I get unlucky, it simply repeats the
"already exists" / "not ready" loop indefinitely.

I get a similar situation when suspending/resuming. I've already pulled
the firmware and stuck it under /lib (see dmesg output for version).

[Bug 1333025] Re: Screen goes blank after resume from suspend

2014-06-23 Thread Greg Taylor
With the lateset upstream kernel, 3.16.0, the bug still exists but the
behavior is different. Upon resume, the login screen appears and does
allow me to login, but then the screen goes blank after successfully
logging in. At that point I am able to CTRL-ALT-F1 to get a console and
kill my xvfe session to start a new one.

[Bug 1333025] [NEW] Screen goes blank after resume from suspend

2014-06-22 Thread Greg Taylor
Public bug reported:

After upgrading to Xubuntu 14.04, whenever I close the lid to my laptop
to suspend it and then reopen it, the computer appears to resume
properly (power light, hard drive light, wireless light are all lit),
but the screen turns on for a second then turns off. There is nothing I
can do but hit the power button to power off the machine. Upon powering
back up everything is normal.

Attempts to go to the console by hitting CTRL-ALT-F1 do nothing. The
screen stays off.

[Bug 61305] Re: networking doesn't work as acpi is disabled on Toshiba laptop

2008-05-22 Thread Greg Taylor
Added needed attachments with debugging information. This is a a really
long-standing issue (2006-09-19), it'd be great to get some attention.

** Changed in: linux-source-2.6.17 (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete = Confirmed

** Summary changed:

- networking doesn't work as acpi is disabled on Toshiba laptop
+ Networking on the Toshiba Tecra is unavailable without irqpoll

** Description changed:

- There were some problems in Dapper with ACPI being automatically
- disabled when a certain BIOS version was detected (1.60). It would
- appear that ACPI is once again being disabled, fuddled with, or just
- isn't working in the latest Edgy. The side-effect of this is that both
- network interfaces (a Marvell Yukon card and an Intel ipw2200 wireless
- card) do not work or pull IP addresses. There are quite a few errors in
- the dmesg output as shown by the attachments.
-
- dmesg_nolapic is a default clean install with no special boot options
- dmesg_lapic is a clean install with the 'lapic' boot option.
-
- [summary was: Toshiba ACPI Problem Again]
+ On my Canonical-issued Toshiba Tecra A4, wireless and wired network are
+ unavailable without 'irqpoll' included in the grub boot options. There
+ seems to be some kind of IRQ conflict going on, see the attachments for
+ debugging information.

[Bug 61305] Re: networking doesn't work as acpi is disabled on Toshiba laptop

2008-04-28 Thread Greg Taylor
I've attached the requested files and will note that I'm now on 8.04:
Linux tecra 2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP Thu Apr 10 13:23:42 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

It looks like neither the hard-wired ethernet or wireless interfaces
work without irqpoll, which is really inconvenient. The laptop runs much
more smoothly without irqpoll on, but the lack of networking is a show-
stopper.

[Bug 200869] [NEW] expo splits across screens in twinview

2008-03-11 Thread Greg Taylor
Public bug reported:

When I use expo with twinview in the latest updated Hardy release, it's
split across both of my monitors, making it really hard to see, rather
than just in my primary monitor. My xorg.conf was largely generated by
nvidia-settings. Most things seem to work just fine, including scale and
moving workspaces (the workspace display block appears in the center of
the primary monitor).

[Bug 200872] [NEW] gnome-screenshot has no lower panel or alt+tab entry

2008-03-11 Thread Greg Taylor
Public bug reported:

The Gnome Screenshot application, gnome-screenshot, doesn't show an
entry in the lower task bar and isn't reachable via ALT+TAB. While this
may be done in some way to prevent the entry from being shown in
screenshots, it does introduce a usability problem. If I open the
screenshot app, switch back to my full-screen app to make an adjustment,
and want to get back to gnome-screenshot, there is no way to do so
without moving windows. Some users may open up another instance of
gnome-screenshot, which isn't ideal.

This is more of a usability issue than anything. Perhaps we could see
about making this show up in the task bar except in full desktop
screenshots? Or at least making it reachable via ALT+TAB?

[Bug 200874] [NEW] Sound Card disabled in BIOS being used

2008-03-11 Thread Greg Taylor
Public bug reported:

I have disabled my on-board VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller
(rev 60) on my KT600 motherboard, yet it's still showing up on lspci and
is selected as the default device despite my PCI C-Media CM8738 being
the one I need to use. Windows does not pick up on the sound device when
I disable it via the BIOS, Linux really shouldn't either. This might be
an upstream problem, but this is a very potentially confusing issue for
those with a disabled sound card. I had to fix this by manually setting
sound card indexes in a configuration file on Gutsy, but that's not
something a typical user should have to do, as it's counter to bug #1.

I'm running Hardy Alpha 6 with all available updates applied. Here is my

[Bug 200875] [NEW] firefox 3 + compiz window decoration oddities

2008-03-11 Thread Greg Taylor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

I'm not sure if this is a Firefox 3 or compiz issue so I won't set the
package just yet.

As I move to different pages in Firefox 3 on the latest up to date Hardy
(as of March 11 at 2:29 AM EST), the top title bar/window decoration
does a few weird things from time to time. A gray stripe will sometimes
blank out the top of the window decoration, with the lower half acting
normally, and sometimes the entire top window decoration turns gray as
if the window lost focus, but the title bar text is also gone.

This seems to be compiz related but I'm not positive. Other applications
don't seem to be having the issue, so it may also have some Firefox 3
roots. I'm not positive but this looks like it might only happen while
in full screen.

Also of important note is that I'm using twinview on a nvidia 6600 with
moderate desktop effects enabled via the Appearance tab. This might have
something to do with partial transparencies in Window decorations. Sorry
I can't be more helpful, but let me know how I can help. Attempts to get
a screenshot of this thus far have failed.

[Bug 42678] Re: Logitech MX500 mouse forward/back buttons not detected

2008-03-11 Thread Greg Taylor
This really shouldn't need a GUI to work, it's counter to the
aforementioned Just works mindframe, and is also counter to bug #1.
This is the kind of thing that most users expect to not have to worry
about. Keyboards and mice are basic peripherals that most operating
systems pick up and require no real thought from the user in 98% of the
cases, this should be the same for Ubuntu.

There's a glaring problem here, how can we help troubleshoot it and
figure out what needs to be fixed? Has anyone heard anything from the
xorg guys regarding this?

[Bug 200868] Re: nvidia-settings doesn't have permissions to write xorg.conf

2008-03-11 Thread Greg Taylor
It seems like the issue here is that nvidia-settings isn't using the new

called). It should at a minimal be called with gksu (which would prompt
for a password), and at best use the privilege escalation system.

On the latest Hardy update, nvidia-settings doesn't seem to have
permissions to write the xorg.conf when you click the 'Save to

2007-08-08 Thread Greg Taylor
Public bug reported:

When attempting to install Ubuntu 6.10 or 7.04 on a Dell PowerEdge 2500
server, everything works fine right up until after it's done scanning
hardware. It starts loading packages from the CD and locks up on
libc6-udeb. The computer is completely unresponsive. No idea what's
going on here but it's obviously very much a problem when trying to
install!

[Bug 131095] Re: Install Lock-up Dell PowerEdge 2500

2007-08-08 Thread Greg Taylor
I left it sitting there in what I thought was this locked up state, but
eventually it came up with a CD read error. The same CD works just fine
in other machines, and I've verified the checksums and CD elsewhere.
Checking the CD on the PowerEdge 2500 results in a real lockup at 1%.

So apparently this is some kind of weird CD-Rom problem, the best I can
see.

NOTE: Ubuntu 6.04 installs without a hitch, 6.10 and 7.04 show this
problem.

[Bug 61305] Toshiba ACPI Problem Again

2006-09-19 Thread Greg Taylor
Public bug reported:

There were some problems in Dapper with ACPI being automatically
disabled when a certain BIOS version was detected (1.60). It would
appear that ACPI is once again being disabled, fuddled with, or just
isn't working in the latest Edgy. The side-effect of this is that both
network interfaces (a Marvell Yukon card and an Intel ipw2200 wireless
card) do not work or pull IP addresses. There are quite a few errors in
the dmesg output as shown by the attachments.

dmesg_nolapic is a default clean install with no special boot options

[Bug 55532] ipw2200 and ACPI not playing nicely

2006-08-07 Thread Greg Taylor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux

This is a recent regression, as this wasn't happening on Dapper a while
back. The following report is based on what I'm seeing on a Canonical-
Issued Toshiba Tecra A4, which has historically had some problems with
ACPI. The most recent fix involved actually enabling ACPI, as having it
disabled caused a similar problem to this. It is possible that the
condition that disables Tecra A4 ACPI's automatically has been extended
to do so on the latest Toshiba BIOS. Previously it'd disable ACPI if it
saw you had 1.60, I upgraded to 1.70, thus making sure ACPI was enabled
at boot time and the problem was fixed.

In any case, here's the errors I get after manually removing and re-
adding the module via modprobe:

[Bug 39862] Re: [sky2] Marvell ethernet interface doesn' t work after reboot

2006-06-16 Thread Greg Taylor
I resolved this by doing the following:

#1) Boot with pci=noacpi and irqpoll
#2) This will make your ethernet and USB drives work. You can then apt-get
update and dist-upgrade to get the latest kernel.
#3) Restart, upgrade your BIOS to 1.70. This gets around a measure that forces
pci=noacpi for BIOS version 1.60 which actually appears to make things worse.
#4) Restart, enjoy ethernet and USB.

I will post this on the Toshiba Tecra A4 page at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/LaptopTestingTeam/ToshibaTecraA4
