[Bug 1947970] [NEW] Xorg freeze
Public bug reported: I know I am using non-standard drivers right now, but that was only after I first experienced the problem. I also already replaced the video card TURKS->JUNIPER, but the problem is the same. Later mesa drivers seem to make the problem worse, so I am planning to go back to the original Ubuntu drivers. They too had the problem and made me try other drivers. The problem seems to occur after 'some other error, like network errors', so suspect to me is PCI bus stuff. More logs and info available. I also reported the problem to the mesa team, but thought Ubuntu might want to help, as I guess Caonical wants to offer a stable Linux. [Bug 1885246] Re: Desktop freezes when moving window fast to other desktop
I removed all the AMD driver stuff and went back to the default 18.04 kernel and the original X.Org drivers and that seems to have solved the problem. [Bug 1885246] [NEW] Desktop freezes when moving window fast to other desktop
Public bug reported: For a long time sometimes my desktop freezes suddenly and it took me a long time to find when. It turns out sometimes the desktop freezes when I move a window fast from one desktop to another, normally I would move it to the right. OS is Ubuntu 18.04 and the issue occurs (as far as I remember) with the Open Source drivers and the AMD drivers. When using some default setting/driver the issue does not occur, but then screen updates are very slow. I am using an MSI H81M-P33 motherboard, processor i5-4460, AMD Radeon HD 7700 Series (according to AMD driver). Monitor is AOC 1920x1080. I tried many things, like different kernal versions and different drivers. The currently installed AMD drivers don't work with the 5.3 kernel. I did not recently use something like kernel 5.0, so I don't know if the issue is solved in later kernels. I found some similar reports, but they all or mostly seem to relate to laptops. While writing this report my desktop crashed again and I was not moving a window, but just resizing it from the top down. I can access the system through ssh and just changed the drivers from AMD pro to AMD open source. Not sure what the effect is. More details available if needed. I would appreciate this would be solved, as it is pretty annoying to restart my computer several times a day and sometimes losing work. As far as I know the system is not swapping, at least not a lot, but as indicated, very hard to figure out what is going on without being able to use a terminal screen. I also set the swap space to another disk than the disk that seems to be causing the issue. And yes, I know it has (probably) nothing to do with e2fsprogs, but I had to choose something when reporting the error (using command line utility). And to me no matter what it is, it is still kind of a bug. I think an OS virtually freezing like this is not a stable OS. I am trying to change the disk scheduler now to see if that changes anything. Please note I started using ionice and nice for the suspect processes. That doesn't seem to make any difference. Looking forward to more info about how I can figure out what is going on, Kind regards, Guus On Monday, 16 April, 2018 10:58 PM, Theodore Ts'o wrote: > Your system sounds like its thrashing due your processes wanting to you > more memory than is available in your system. [Bug 1764180] [NEW] System slows down to almost freeze
Public bug reported: For quite a while sometimes my system slows down to almost freeze where it becomes unusable. The problem seems to be related to heavy disk i/o, but I have not been able to pinpoint the cause. The problem seems to occur when I both use the bitcoin core application for Bitcoin Gold and VirtualBox. I normally use VirtualBox to run two Windows 2008 servers. It seems in the end the system sorts itself out and starts running normal again, but it often causes to destroy the status of the Virtual Machines, sometimes resulting in a Virtual Machine going into 'guru- meditation' mode. Normally my system is fast enough to run everything. I have 8 Gb memory, 5 hard disks and an Intel I5. I tried to spread the load over the hard disks, but that doesn't seem to have any effect on the slowing down of the system. My feeling is that the problem is somehow related to some disk i/o system independent of the individual disks. Mostly the problem is solved by stopping the Bitcoin Core Gold program, but that is very hard to do, as even a terminal window takes minutes or up to an hour or so to respond. That also makes it very hard to identify the problem. I have several monitoring programs installed, but can't use them when the system is in this 'almost frozen' mode. I am using Ubuntu 16.04.4. The problem is not to x.x.4 version of Ubuntu 16.04. [Bug 1680904] Re: zesty unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference
I think I had the same problem on zesty. It started occurring AFTER I used nvidia-settings to switch to integrated intel graphics on a Dell XPS-15 9560 (GTX1050) and completely uninstalled nvidia drivers to get back to a working laptop. Indeed it seems to happen while using chromium. My machine was nog completely crashed though, I could still ssh into it. But restarting X or even rebooting was impossible, I did need to force power off. [Bug 1315978] Re: upgrade 13.10 to 14.04 moved grub to MBR
Addition maybe relevant: After I got the upgraded partition to start, I noticed that Windows7 no longer was in the Grub menu. So I launched the app "Grub customizer". Saving Grub however did not correct this. I then noticed that according to "Grub customizer" Grub was not in the MBR, so it saved it to the partition. After choosing "install in MBR" the problem was solved. [Bug 1315978] [NEW] upgrade 13.10 to 14.04 moved grub to MBR
Public bug reported: I upgraded from 13.10 to 14.04 via the update manager. Before upgrade Grub was in the Ubuntu partition and I booted Grub via the windows7 bootmenu (modified with EasyBCD). During the Upgrade grub was automatically installed in MBR. After reboot it showed Grub, but choosing Ubuntu, it did initialize a start (Screen changed) then stopped. (Windows worked fine). I noticed however there was no disk activity at all. So I suspected something wrong with the Ubuntu Grub entry. I then installed 14.04 on another partition with the live.iso on USB, Grub was renewed in the process, and then the upgraded partition did start and all was well with the upgrade. [Bug 1237392] Re: kernels following version 3.8.0-27 do not start
Not sure what went wrong. First I compiled the kernel, and I saw that the name was the same as an existing kernel. It didnt work, same error. However, to be sure I uninstalled all the handmade kernels using synaptic and now I cannot compile the kernel. Also, I am missing one deb if I compare with the other kernels: they all had 3 files: 2 header files (one AMD64, one all) and one kernel image. The error message I get is simply : " Errors were encountered while processing: linux-headers-3.8.13-03081304-generic " Do I need the 3rd header file? I want to be sure it is indeed not working using this kernel, because as 4 works, it would be weird if this one doesn't (would mean this patch is to blame I guess). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1237392 Title: kernels following version 3.8.0-27 do not start To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1237392/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1237392] Re: kernels following version 3.8.0-27 do not start
I installed the kernel, but it shows the same errors. Weird though, if this is the only commit related to Areca Raid Controller. What I notice is that the messages are mostly from "arcmsr2" like: "arcmsr2: executing hw bus reset " and "arcmsr: scsi bus reset eh returns with success" and also: "Areca Raid Controller2: F/W v1.46 ...(etc)..." Could the problem be a different patch / commit as the driver names differ?
Right. Done that. Not sure how you got to these 2 kernels, but you are absolutely right! 3.8.13.4 works: just booted, logged on and rebooted. No problem there. 3.8.13.5 had the same symptoms as the non-working kernels. i checked with the recovery kernel and got largely the same output. It had the same problem. The kernel you proposed to install, I installed. It produces pretty much the same behaviour. So I guess it is not solved upstream. [Bug 1237392] [NEW] kernels following version 3.8.0-27 do not start
Public bug reported: All kernel updates on ubuntu following kernel 3.8.0-27 result in an empty screen with no indication of startup, no response to the keyboard. I can only start up using kernel version 3.8.0-27-generic. All following numbers (up to and including 3.8.0-31-generic) do not result in a running system. Also, the display no message at all when starting up (after grub). I checked the logfiles with "grep -n "Linux version 3.8.0-" *" and found only 27 to be logged, nothing for the other kernels. I am at a loss how to continue. I am running the most recent version of Ubuntu server. Two days ago I reinstalled Ubuntu with essentially the same result. The installation kernel version 3.8.0-19 works fine. The updated kernel 3.8.0-31 does not work. The following is the situation: When I let the machine start on itself I get no output at all. When I manually tell ubuntu to start the most recent kernel, I get 2 lines: "Loading Linux-3.8.0-31-generic ..." "Loading initial ramdisk ..." that's it. When I manually start the recovery kernel, I get a lot of information. Finally it drops to a terminal and indicates it could not load the LVM partition /dev/mapper/Server-Root. This is why I never see any result in my message or dmesg on disk. The problem seems to be with the Areca Raid controller. It does a reset of the scsi bus eh until it finally gives up and drops to a terminal. A while after the system goes berserk with messages of non responding scsi bus. As I cannot reach my harddisk, is there a way to find out what is wrong? Why does everything work fine up to and including kernel 27 and starts to malfunction after that? Did the Areca software change in some way? P.S. When I start kernel version 3.8.0-19, everything works fine. [Bug 78513] Current ACX driver will not let USR5410 card function properly.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20 Using Feisty (dist-upgraded January 8th, 2007), my US Robotics USR5410 card wouldn't work properly (while it worked fine in Ubuntu 6.10). The card uses the ACX driver. Following instructions on http://acx100.sourceforge.net/wiki/Distribution_list/Ubuntu (look for the addition made January 4th, 2007) I was able to connect to my network again. The most eye-catching symptoms where that one of the LEDs on the card was active and that there's a wlan0 reported by iwconfig, but wlan0 is labelled 'no wireless extensions' by iwconfig. I ended up downloading the driver tarball again, recompiling it and using that. There was no need to download another firmware version - I used the tiacx111c16 firmware that is provided in the 'default' folder in /lib/firmware/`uname -r`/acx/default (symlink to ../1.2.1.34 directory). Note that I'm not familiar with Linux kernel/driver/firmware development at all. I'm hoping that these steps give a more knowledgeable person an indication that enables him/her to fix the problem constructively. Basically, what I did was this: # cd /usr/src/ # wget http://lisas.de/~andi/acx100/acx-20070101.tar.bz2 # tar xjvf acx-20070101.tar.bz2 # cd acx-20070101 # make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=`pwd` # lsmod | grep acx # modprobe -r acx # cp /lib/firmware/`uname -r`/acx/default/tiacx111c16 /lib/firmware/ # insmod ./acx.ko ** Affects: linux-source-2.6.20 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Unconfirmed -- Current ACX driver will not let USR5410 card function properly. https://launchpad.net/bugs/78513 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
