[Bug 1973660] Re: [vmwgfx] Login screen not refreshing properly on vSphere

2022-05-17 Thread Hank Keanu
Yes, I intended to use Xorg by setting WaylandEnable=false in
/etc/gdm3/custom.conf.
After I switched to Wayland, this problem disappeared.

Could you please give me some hints how to identify it's a bug in the
VMware Xorg graphics driver?

Thanks!

[Bug 1806825] [NEW] Akonadi information management service is not operational

2018-12-04 Thread Hank
Public bug reported:

I installed KAddressbook through the included application manager but
when it runs the following error displays: "The Akonadi personal
information management service is not operational."

I am running Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic Beaver which I installed and updated
today December 4, 2018, so it should have all the current patches
installed. Also, I seem to remember a similar problem when I installed
kaddressbook in Ubuntu 16.04.

As the message indicates the Akonadi database is not working or so it
appears. Apparently, the installation process for Kaddressbook does not
take into account all the dependencies. I have been using Synaptic
package manager to install Akonadi packages but do not know which
Akonadi packages are required.

At the Kaddressbook support site
(https://userbase.kde.org/KAddressBook_4.4) it also mentions that
Nepomuk must be running.

In short, the application manager should automatically install the
necessary dependencies along with the kaddressbook application and it
does not.

I will try to update this bug report when I know a work around.

[Bug 1680328] Re: Broken PowerNV PCI hotplug driver - Patch backporting to zesty

2017-05-05 Thread Hank Chang
Willie Liauw verified the related NVMe
hotplug driver by building & installing the latest tagged kernel from
zesty git (tag 4.10.0-21.23, git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-
zesty.git)

So, changing the tag to verification-done-zesty..

Thanks!

[Bug 1617058] Re: tightvncserver crash on startup (s390x - int code 003b)

2016-09-23 Thread Hank Calzaretta
I have been supporting Linux on this platform since 1999 and am very
familiar with the cautions of running graphical applications on headless
systems.

Unfortunately, some software from IBM and other vendors includes a
graphical installer which makes installation 100 times simpler. VNC is
only used for this function and not to run a xwindows desktop.

Downloading version 12.4.0 is not possible because the respective page
automatically redirects to version 12.4.3 (no download available for 12.4.0).
I will test 12.4.3 and (to be sure) the even older version 11.10

[Bug 1318012] Re: 148f:2570 Wireless LAN reported as Hard blocked ONLY in Linux (dual boot system) although device is not deactivated

2014-05-13 Thread hank
The problem persists after installing and booting the new mainline kernel
v3.15-rc4-utopic.
The new kernel does boot, however, there were problems when trying to install
the respective linux_headers*.deb.
Not sure if that counts as kernel-unable-to-test-upstream. Therefore, ill
change the status as confirmed, as you suggested.

[Bug 571059] Re: Installation changes system clock -Ubuntu 9.04/9.10

2010-07-07 Thread Hank
Maybe it is true that Ubuntu starts out by default in the UTC time zone
but if that were the case I would expect the clock to show the same time
until I manually change the time zone. Also, when I switch back to
Windows 7 the clock has been changed there as well. Therefore, as far
as I can tell this is not a time zone issue.

Regards,

2010-05-27 Thread hank ingles
I'll try to be a little more clear. Installed Ubuntu last year inside
Vista machine. Got rid of it and bought new mach w/7. Installed 10.04
Monday on it inside Win7. Next day dowloaded ALL updates. Installed
till grub and just stopped. Then window came up install without grub:
yes or no. Tried with and still no action. So, restarted on Ubuntu and
it finished install w/out grub. Works ok. So, I ran updated manager
again and it said no updates at this time. You are up to date. Not
frustrated! Oh, I dont understand the terminal, manual load thingy. I
tried command, sudo dpkg -- configure-a whatever. No such command. I
have lots computor experience but I'm no programmer or developer. It'
working for now so I can get familiar with all this when I get my Linux
only machine built. I am experienced w/ repair and building. Thanks.

Hi Hank,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release
of Ubuntu.  ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .  If the issue remains, please run the
following command from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal).  It
will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 571059

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be
great.  It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.
Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds .  Once you've tested the
upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag.  This can be
done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the
bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.
Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

[This is an automated message.  Apologies if it has reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

from CD under wubi.  In my case the clock was correctly set to 11:10am
under Windows 7 and after the installation it showed 6:16am.

When I installed Ubuntu 9.10 i386 the clock was 10:31am before install
and the time after install was 5:34am

When I installed Ubuntu 9.04 the time was 11:48pm before install and the
time after install was 6:54pm.

Based on my observations the installation process changes the hour value
while leaving the minutes and AM/PM value unchanged.

I would expect the installation to leave the system clock alone when
there is no time server to synchronize with.

In my case I did not have a network connected and accordingly did not
have a connection to a timeserver. After the system connects to the
internet the clock sets itself automatically.

I have only tested this on Wubi installs of Ubuntu 9.04, Ubuntu 9.10

[Bug 545709] Re: bcmwl-kernel-source 5.10.91 and BCM4312 wireless

2010-04-27 Thread Hank
3/31/2010

I tried compiling the driver from the Broadcom website.
http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php

But when I download the necesary libraries and run the makefile it
creates the files and then deletes them immediately. Perhaps this link
will be helpfull for someone else.

4/20/2010
I installed Ubuntu 9.10 i386 and the issue was resolved by installing the
bcmwl-kernel-source package with the Synaptic Package Manager. This was on the
same system that showed the above issue with Ubuntu 9.10 amd64 installed. The
issue appears in the amd64 version but has not been an issue in i386 version
even after using the system for several weeks.

Note:
I am currently running Ubuntu 9.10 i386 and am happy with it. I will try to
run the additional testing when I get a chance to install the amd 64 version
again.

[Bug 545709] Re: bcmwl-kernel-source 5.10.91 and BCM4312 wireless

2010-03-30 Thread Hank
I finally got the Broadcom wireless BCM4312 driver to stick.

In order to do so I had to move or delete the
etc/modprob.d/blacklist-bcm43.conf and then reinstall bcmwl-kernel-source in
the synaptic package manager. Then, I rebooted the system.
(See the following link.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1308788page=2)

Also, the system boots up with the wireless off by default. So, I had
to press the hardware wireless enable key on the keyboard.

Many thanks to Roshan James for the tip.

Re: [Bug 306965] Re: on trying to install any application receive error: Could not get lock /var/cache/apt/archives/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable) E: Unable to lock the download dir

2008-12-12 Thread hank
Sorry if my description was confusing. I am not an experienced linux user.
Yes, I can open Synaptic and install from it using the administrator
account.
Is it possible for two accounts to have administrative rights or does this
confuse the system?

2008/12/11 Chris Coulson chrisccoul...@googlemail.com

I'm not really sure entirely what you mean. But, can you now open
Synaptic from an account that belongs to the admin group?

Re: [Bug 306965] Re: on trying to install any application receive error: Could not get lock /var/cache/apt/archives/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable) E: Unable to lock the download dir

2008-12-11 Thread hank
Chris, I wasn't aware at the time of any other instance of synaptic running,
ie: no other applications open on screen. Although here are some more
details to add which had not come to mind earlier : There are 2 users on the
system, 1 administrator and 1 user. I had given administrator rights to the
user temporarily in order to install some games on their desktop. At the
time of the error I was logged in to the user account.
I later found that when logged into the administrator account, perfoming the
same task (installing applications) met with no problems at all. I also
realised it was not necessary to enable administrator priviliges on the user
account in order to install games.
I hope this helps.

Hank

2008/12/11 Chris Coulson [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thank you for your bug report. This error means that there is already
another instance of apt running (perhaps you have another Synaptic
 open?)

Could you please close down any other instances of Synaptic and try
 again.

 Thanks

I too get the same thing.
Occassionally, I can get lyx started by reinstalling it, but it still doesn't

When running empty, telling it to reconfigure yields a Reconfiguration has
failed message,
with the only error indicated on the stderr output being mktexmf ecrm1000
failing.

[Bug 225686] [NEW] Optra E310 ids as E312 under 8.04

2008-05-02 Thread Hank Dietz
Public bug reported:

After upgrade to Ubuntu 8.04 on an AMD64 system, lsusb now says:

Bus 002 Device 003: ID 043d:000c Lexmark International, Inc. Optra E312

for my E310. However, it is correctly identified by the print system as
an E310. The problem is that, although everything works, I keep getting
a pop-up that says:

Not connected!
Printer 'Optra-E310' may not be connected.

I assume this false message is rooted in the database used by lsusb

BTW, may I presume should have been might -- I don't think

[Bug 62858] shmctl man differs from kernel operation

2006-09-28 Thread Hank Dietz
Public bug reported:

shmget() allows creation of shared memory segments with key_t key values
that can be used by other processes to identify them. Traditionally,
under Linux the shmctl() call could be used to caused a shared memory
segment to destroy itself upon the last detachment by IPC_RMID, and this
would have no other impact on the operation of the shared memory
segment. This behavior of IPC_RMID is documented (in the shmctl man
page) and is quite useful. However, setting IPC_RMID in recent Linux
kernels has the important side effect of CHANGING the key associated
with the segment to 0 (aka, IPC_PRIVATE). Ideally, this side effect
should be removed from the kernel, but the kernel folks seem unlikely to
do this (the new behavior was mentioned in a discussion). Thus, I
suggest fixing the shmctl man page to mention this strange behavior in
the discussion of IPC_RMID: after IPC_STAT will be set. add the phrase
The segment key may be changed to IPC_PRIVATE as a side effect of
IPC_RMID.
