[Bug 1884079] [NEW] unmkinitramfs in initramfs-tools-core doesn't fully extract an initrd in bionic

2020-06-18 Thread Hari Sundararajan
Public bug reported:

I am running Ubuntu 18.04.4

I am looking at the initrd found in the desktop live cd (/casper/initrd). If you execute `binwalk initrd`, binwalk informs
that the initrd file contains 2 cpio archives and a lzma archive

The first cpio archive is supposed to contain
kernel/x86/microcode/AuthenticAMD.bin
The second cpio archive is supposed to contain
kernel/x86/microcode/GenuineIntel.bin
The third file is a LZMA compressed data

Now, if you execute `unmkinitramfs /casper/initrd new-
directory` , you will see 2 directories, "early" and "main".

"early" has the AuthenticAMD.bin, which means it corresponds to the first cpio.
"main" is the actual initial ram disk file system, which comes from the LZMA
compressed data.

What I expect to see is also the GenuineIntel.bin firmware. `binwalk`
says it's there, but `unmkinitramfs` is not able to extract it out. Why?

I see binwalk is at version 2.1.1-16, while initramfs-tools-core (which
provides unmkinitramfs) is at version 0.130ubuntu3.9.

How do I extract the ubuntu 18 initramfs and get all the contents that
binwalk is able to see?

[Bug 1748310] Re: [SRU][xenial]boot stalls looking for entropy in FIPS mode

2018-02-22 Thread Vineetha Hari Pai
I tested libgcrypt20 (1.6.5-2ubuntu0.4) from xenial-proposed with the following
configurations -
a) On a xenial VM running 16.04.3 server ISO with encrypted installation and
fips enabled, the package fixes boot delays. Tested with both fips=1 and fips=0
and both cases work with no issues.

b) On a xenial VM running 16.04.3 desktop ISO with encrypted
installation and fips enabled, the package fixes boot delays. Tested
with both fips=1 and fips=0 and both cases work with no issues.

[Bug 1748310] Re: [SRU][xenial]boot stalls looking for entropy in FIPS mode

2018-02-21 Thread Vineetha Hari Pai
Hi Robie,

For any kernel shipped by Canonical (excluding the Canonical FIPS
kernel), /proc/sys/crypto/fips_enabled file does not exist.

The kernel has to be compiled with "CONFIG_CRYPTO_FIPS" for the file to
be even created and then based on the kernel command line parameters
fips=1 or fips=0, the kernel sets value in that file. This is done only
by a FIPS kernel.

[Bug 1748310] Re: [SRU][xenial]boot stalls looking for entropy in FIPS mode

2018-02-16 Thread Vineetha Hari Pai
** Description changed:

  [IMPACT]
- libgcrypt20 is not a FIPS certified library. On a machine running FIPS
enabled kernel, the library by default goes into FIPS mode if
/proc/sys/crypto/fips_enabled=1. FIPS mode is not a configurable compile option
currently in the library. Hence FIPS code paths are always executed on a FIPS
enabled machine. In FIPS mode, it runs self tests and integrity checks and it
looks for quality entropy from /dev/random.

enabled kernel, the library by default goes into FIPS mode if

currently in the library. Hence FIPS code paths are always executed on a FIPS
enabled machine. In FIPS mode, it runs self tests and integrity checks and it
looks for quality entropy from /dev/random. Additionally in desktop
environments, gnome keyring daemon also queries libgcrypt for /dev/random
entropy, slowing down the GUI startup.

On encrypted installations, cryptsetup uses libgcrypt20. During boot on
an encrypted machine running in FIPS mode, cryptsetup invokes libgcrypt
and it stalls looking for quality entropy from /dev/random. This results
in significant delays during startup. The issue was reported by a FIPS
  customer.

The issue impacts libgcrypt versions in xenial and bionic.

  lsb_release -rd
  Description: Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS
  Release: 16.04

  version - 1.6.5-2ubuntu0.3

  lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu Bionic Beaver (development branch)
  Release: 18.04

  version - 1.8.1-4

  [FIX]
- Disable the two self tests that require entropy from /dev/random in FIPS
mode. This will prevent delays during boot.
+ This fix proposes to disable libgcrypt reading /proc/sys/crypto/fips_enabled.
We only want fips certified modules
+ reading this file and running in fips mode. libgcrypt is not one of our
+ fips certified modules, so should not be reading this along with our fips
certified modules to determine whether to run in fips mode. The libgcrypt fips
code in xenial is outdated and some algorithms are no longer allowed by recent
FIPS 140-2 standards.
+
+ However, users do have the option to create a /etc/gcrypt/fips_enabled
+ file, manually, and force libgcrypt to run in fips mode. We propose to
+ leave this as is, so as to not regress anyone who is using this option.
+ We believe a user who uses this option is doing so with awareness.

  [TEST]
Tested on a VM installed with xenial desktop iso and one with xenial server
iso. Enabled full disk encryption during install. Tested with and without FIPS.
No delays were observed during boot after the fix patch was applied.

Tested on a VM installed with Bionic development release version of
desktop ISO with full disk encryption. Installed the xenial FIPS kernel
and installed the fixed libgcrypt and did not observe any delays during
  the boot.

With FIPS enabled on encrypted install, without the patch fix, the boot
- stalls before and after prompting for decryption password.
+ stalls before and after prompting for decryption password. In desktop
+ installations, a delay is observed during the GUI startup as well.

  [REGRESSION POTENTIAL]
- The regression potential for this is small. The two self tests disabled does
not impact any other functionality available in fips mode and non-fips mode of
the library.
+ The regression potential for this is small. A fips kernel is required to
+ create /proc/sys/crypto/fips_enabled. For users forcing fips mode via
+ /etc/gcrypt/fips_enabled or the control option in libgcrypt, nothing has
+ changed.

[Bug 1748310] Re: [SRU][xenial]boot stalls looking for entropy in FIPS mode

2018-02-14 Thread Vineetha Hari Pai
** Description changed:

  [IMPACT]
libgcrypt20 is not a FIPS certified library.

On encrypted installations, cryptsetup uses libgcrypt20. During boot on
an encrypted machine running in FIPS mode, cryptsetup invokes libgcrypt
and it stalls looking for quality entropy from /dev/random. This results
in significant delays during startup. The issue was reported by a FIPS
  customer.

- This issue impacts xenial's version of libgcrypt. In later version of
- libgcrypt in Bionic, the entropy device is a global configurable option
- via /etc/gcrypt/random.conf config file. The config setting "only-
- urandom" can be used to set the entropy device to /dev/urandom globally
- in libgcrypt.
-
  lsb_release -rd
  Description: Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS
  Release: 16.04

  version - 1.6.5-2ubuntu0.3

  [FIX]
- Get entropy from /dev/urandom device in FIPS mode. This does not block.
+ Disable the two self tests that require entropy from /dev/random during boot
in FIPS mode.

  [TEST]
Tested on a VM installed with xenial desktop iso and one with xenial server
iso. Enabled full disk encryption during install. Tested with and without FIPS.
No delays were observed during boot after the fix patch was applied.

With FIPS enabled on encrypted install, without the patch fix, the boot
stalls before and after prompting for decryption password.

  [REGRESSION POTENTIAL]
- The regression potential for this is small. This patch does not take away
current functionality. It changes the entropy device in FIPS mode to
/dev/urandom to get faster entropy.
+ The regression potential for this is small. The two self tests disabled does
not impact any other functionality available in fips mode and non-fips mode of
the library.

Thanks.

The mysql server is not starting at all.

`sudo service mysql start` just waits for hours.

[Bug 1460507] [NEW] Hibernate fails if resume is done after X hours (X ~ 3+ hours)

2015-05-31 Thread hari
Public bug reported:

I have a strange issue but I'm not the only one
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2280045).

My hardware is Lenovo t450s with intel Hd 5500. Suspend works fine
(Although I haven't tested a long sleep yet). Intel rapidstart is
disabled in BIOS. Hibernate saves to disk and resumes fine if I do the
wakeup within a few hours. Any long-term hibernates (12 hours) don't
resume. The splash screen shows up and then a blank screen and
unresponsive keyboard. I don't have a capslock key, so don't know if
that is flashing.

I have been on multiple kernels 3.16,3.18,3.19 and 4.0 now. All of them
have shown this problem. If there are any specific debugs that I could
gather to help narrow down the issue, I would appreciate the guidance.
Thanks!

[Bug 1242272] Re: [HP EliteBook 8560w] Bluetooth does not work on ubuntu 13.10

2013-11-24 Thread Rona Dini Hari
I upgraded my laptop from 13.04 to 13.10. Previously with 13.04 my
bluetooth mouse works very well. Now I have to make sure the mouse is in
off condition before starting cold boot or resume from suspend, When
Xubuntu completed the startup, I turn on the mouse, Xubuntu will setup
the mouse correctly. If I turned on the mouse before the laptop, I have
to restart the laptop, with the mouse off. This is very annoying. What
should I do to fix this?

[Bug 1169761] Re: 3.8.0-18 Kernel causes HDMI Audio to stop working

2013-04-23 Thread Hari Kotcherlakota
Now that I updated to 3.8.8-030808, is there a good reason to roll back
to 3.8.0-19?

If so, how do I get an update? Link please.

[Bug 1169761] Re: 3.8.0-18 Kernel causes HDMI Audio to stop working

2013-04-22 Thread Hari Kotcherlakota
Thanks ThomasNovin.

I did the following from your link. Downloaded:
hari@hari-PORTEGE-R835:~/Desktop$ ls -lt *.deb
-rw-rw-r-- 1 hari hari 31013124 Apr 22 13:50

linux-headers-3.8.8-030808-generic_3.8.8-030808.201304170248_i386.deb

sudo dpkg -i *.deb
sudo upgrade-grub

There was an error about linuxheader 3.8.8-030808
However, HDMI audio worked.
update-manager wanted to remove it. When I allowed the Partial Upgrade it did
remove whatever was offending.
I did that and re-booted.
No more error from update-manager.

HDMI audio is fine.

Hope I did the right thing. I should also thank Mike Loebl. When is 3.9
going to make it to Ubuntu?

[Bug 1169761] Re: 3.8.0-18 Kernel causes HDMI Audio to stop working

2013-04-19 Thread Hari Kotcherlakota
I was hoping that 3.8.0-19 would fix this problem, It did not. Rolling back to
3.8.0.17 did fix the problem.
My sound card is HDA Intel PCH. Chip Intel CougarPoint HDMI.

How do I upgrade to 3.9?

Upgraded yesterday to Ubuntu 12.10 and I keep getting grub rescue

The boot-repair gave me the same error as in this bug report

[Bug 363430] Re: error, couldn't find SDL module from MLT, Kdenlive will not start untill you fix this

2012-04-22 Thread Jasdeep Hari Bhajan Singh Khalsa
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 899580 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/899580

This is a fully featured video editor for Linux, with timelines,
effects, custom screens, ability to break detach audio from video.

If you are having problems installing due to an error in MLT module, do
the following to install this properly (tested with Ubuntu Oneiric
11.10).

First open a new terminal and remove Kdenlive if you have installed it already:
sudo apt-get remove kdenlive

Now let's a personal package archive to Ubuntu from one of the developers of
kdenlive (which contains the correct version of MLT):
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sunab/kdenlive-svn

Next, lets get Ubuntu to fetch the latest distributions of the PPAs:
sudo apt-get update

Let's install those latest greatest package upgrades:
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Finally, lets install kdenlive (again):
sudo apt-get install kdenlive

And...now let's run it with kdenlive

Easy peasy when you know how, right? Enjoy this great video editor for
Linux.

Re: [Bug 926707] Re: package firefox 9.0.1+build1-0ubuntu0.11.04.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 127

2012-02-23 Thread V. Hari hara Prasad
Dear Micah Gersten,
Thank you for your help. I am fed-up with the errors. Can you please tell
me how to re-install UBUNTU on my system, all afresh? I have win-xp also
running on C: drive.
I just want to delete all the files/ folders on UBUNTU and re-install the
whole thing. I have the CRT monitor (HYUNDAI Image Quest V560).

On 23 February 2012 07:46, Micah Gersten launch...@micahscomputing.comwrote:

This is not a Firefox issue. awk is a virtual package that's
transitively essential which means that an implementation of it should
be available on Ubuntu at all times. The permission denied error implies
the problem lies elsewhere. Needs reassignment.

[Bug 708308] Re: [natty] can't connect to groupwise server: Servname not supported for ai_socktype

2011-04-21 Thread Hari Gangadharan
I could solve this by adding entries in the /etc/services

For me groupwise was connecting to 1677 port. Hence I added the following two
entries and everything became OK:
groupwise 1677/tcp
groupwise 1677/udp

In Natty, there seems to be a restriction for evolution to go against
ports that are not defined in /etc/services. I hope you can also solve
it by adding the above two entries (change the port number if your
groupwise server is in a different port).

Hope this helps.

I came here trying to understand why my VNC session to Mac kept getting
frozen at odd times, thanks to Rex for helping to understand the
underlying issue, it was very puzzling. I hope this bug will be fixed
soon.
