[Bug 1290002] Re: Volume wheel (Dell keyboard) not adjusting Ubuntu volume properly after update

2024-06-18 Thread Harry P
Hi,

While I appreciate @Agathe following up on this bug... What is the point
doing so after 10 years?

I have moved on to more recent LTS versions of Ubuntu.

Dont waste your time on this please. Your help is more needed in
supporting the more recent versions of Ubuntu.

Thank you

[Bug 1847582] Re: checkinstall leaves root filesystem unusable if interrupted

2019-10-10 Thread Harry P
my lord, but that was hard to recover from. I had to boot from a thumb
drive, use cryptsetup to decrypt the drive, faff about with lvm to get
it to recognise the logical volumes, then mount the drive, and
eventually figure out that what it had done was to break /lib. removing
/lib and replacing it with a symlink to usr/lib (apparently that's the
default in 19.04?) seems to have given me a working system again.

[Bug 1799293] Re: Locking the screen once leaves screen contents visible but not interactive. Locking the screen a second time works.

2019-01-13 Thread Harry P
@Tarmo, have you tried pressing super+L after resume, maybe twice? that
brings backa login prompt for me.

ps I don't work for ubuntu or canonical or anything, but I can't help
saying -- please don't nag open source teams about fixing bugs, it
doesn't help. if you need to recommendation ubuntu to "normal" users,
the lts doesn't have this problem. if you really need a fix you can
always fix it yourself, or pay someone else to.

[Bug 1800352] Re: screen lock leaves desktop and current applications displayed unless activated twice

2018-12-03 Thread Harry P
hi there, i've been trying to find the time to do a little video, but in
the meantime i have some more details:

- related bug: pressing lock (super+l) does effectively "lock" the
machine in that it prevents input/interaction, but does not hide the
desktop. pressing it a second time displays the lock screen

- further detail: bug where desktop is displayed only happens to me
when I close the laptop lid, rather than locking it manually, presumably
because when I lock I hit super+l twice because of the above.

- to resume from "broken-lock" i need to press the lock key to display
the password input screen.

[Bug 1800352] [NEW] desktop and current applications displayed when resuming from lock

2018-10-28 Thread Harry P
Public bug reported:

after upgrade to ubuntu 18.10, when resuming from lock (eg re-opening
laptop lid), before typing password (or indeed anything), the whole
desktop including running apps is displayed. although they are not
interactable/responsive, sensitive info is displayed.

possibly related, super+l seems to put the desktop into a similar state
- apps visible, but not interactable. pressing it a second time
produces a more normal lock reaction.

[Bug 1614672] [NEW] minor mistake in SystemdForUpstartUsers

2016-08-18 Thread Harry P
Public bug reported:

I tried to log into the wiki but got a 500. small mistake, easy fix:

the "User" directive (what was setuid in upstart) is listed as being
part of the "Unit" section, which according to my server is wrong. It
prefers it in the "Service" section.

[Bug 1519282] Re: Keyboard backlight stopped working after upgrade to Wily

2016-01-19 Thread Harry P
Sorry Christopher, I'm not sure this should be closed. An Ubuntu
install with UEFI boot consistently shows the problem. An install with
old-style BIOS does not. So the problem is with Ubuntu's UEFI boot
loader, which I'm sure the team would want to fix, since it's meant to
be the preferred way of booting PCs these days?

This might mean you want to reassign the bug to a different package,
rather than closing it?

Quick question in the meantime -- I have some vague notions that there
are two different ways for an OS to boot, UEFI and the old bios way --
when I installed wily, I remember messing about trying to get EFI to

[Bug 1519282] Re: Keyboard backlight stopped working after upgrade to Wily

2015-11-24 Thread Harry P
Hi there,

I managed to install the new kernel (which was exciting! I've never
done that before. Only nonobvious bit was uninstalling virtualbox-dkms
first). It booted ok, this was my new uname -a:

  Linux harry-samsung 4.4.0-040400rc2-generic #201511231054 SMP Mon Nov
23 10:56:43 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

But no change to the keyboard backlight situation.

I did see one error while installing the new kernel, which looked
potentially pertinent:

W: Possible missing firmware /lib/firmware/i915/skl_guc_ver4.bin for
module i915

What else might I be able to try? I think I saw something on the
internets about EFI vs UEFI boots, or something like that?

I reported the dupe at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
shell/+bug/1508148. This bug has been around for a couple of releases
I'd say, definitely as far back as 14.04...

[Bug 1508148] [NEW] When resuming from sleep the unlocked desktop is briefly displayed

2015-10-20 Thread Harry P
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

When re-opening my laptop lid, I expect to see the ubuntu lock screen,
waiting for me to input my password. Instead, it shows me my normal
desktop, complete with whatever apps I had open last time it was running
(confidential emails, etc) -- just for a second or two, before the
screen flashes a couple of times and then I get to a lock screen (which
itself is slightly buggy, but that's a separate issue).

Ubuntu Gnome 15.10 Beta release.

[Bug 1508146] [NEW] alt + left/right arrows switch between tty consoles, cannot disable

2015-10-20 Thread Harry P
Public bug reported:

I'm used to using alt+left/right arrow to navigate back and forward in
web browsers and elsewhere (nautilus)... But on this fresh install of
Ubuntu Gnome 15.10 beta, it seems to try and switch me between tty
consoles (the ctrl+alt+f1 ones). But it's not listed as one of the
shortcuts in the "keyboard" menu, so I don't know how to disable it...

[Bug 1506907] [NEW] No way to install pip for Python 3.4 in 15.10 Wily

2015-10-16 Thread Harry P
Public bug reported:

Related to this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/python3.4/+bug/1290847

It looks like 15.10 uses a mixture of Python 3.4 and 3.5 (hopefully
that's temporary?). Pip, the python package manager, is available from
"python-pip" for Python 2.7, and "python3-pip" for Python 3.5, however,
there is no python3.4-pip, and because of the weird state of Python in
debian/ubuntu, there's no way to use "ensurepip" to get it either.

One fix would be to just ship a complete version of
python/python3.4/python3.5, including pip, as part of the base package,
if there's any appetite for revisiting the historical decision to
unbundle python...

[Bug 1290847] Re: pyvenv fails due to mising ensurepip module

2015-10-16 Thread Harry P
I'm now testing Ubuntu 15.10, which seems *even more* broken, since it
seems to have a mixed mode of Python3.4 and 3.5. there's no
python3.4-pip package, which means there is essentially no way of
getting a working pip for python 3.4.

I know I'm not a contributor, so I don't *deserve* answers, but I still
don't see why Python has to be broken under debian/ubuntu? Why can't it
just ship with all of its standard library, like it does on all other
platforms?

With apologies for the moaning. I do appreciate all the hard work, and
I know there are probably good reasons.

I do a fair bit of work with beginner Python tutorials. It's not often
that we have to say "on linux, this is harder", but this is one area
where ubuntu/debian are failing pretty hard compared to the mac +
windows experience.

[Bug 1069132] Re: cannot resume from hibernate

2014-12-05 Thread Harry P
2 years on lol! Christopher, I'm afraid the laptop in question has
died, so I can't run that command just now. I'll tell you what though,
it only just died, and I'm expecting my replacement laptop in a couple
of weeks, so I'll try and get hibernate working on *that* and I'll
provide updates here if it doesn't work...

[Bug 1290002] Re: Volume wheel (Dell keyboard) not adjusting Ubuntu volume properly after update

2014-06-05 Thread Harry P
Is this issue ever going to be fixed?

Or no one cares anymore about older Ubuntu versions? 12.04 was supposed
to be LTS!

These issues should have not been neglected, nor allowed to happen in
the first place.

Before that specific update, which i suspect is this one: xkb-data:amd64
(2.5-1ubuntu1.3, 2.5-1ubuntu1.5),

everything on my keyboard was working flawlessly. I cannot use the
quickbuttons around the volume wheel or the volume wheel at all. This
should be an easy fix for the developers.

Please look into it as it is very annoying.

[Bug 1316873] [NEW] Left mouse button stops working

2014-05-06 Thread Harry P
Public bug reported:

This problem has plagued me for a few years across different laptops
and Ubuntu versions. Current I am experiencing this on a Dell Inspiron
15z running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

It typically starts after I have used the chat or call feature in gmail,
by clicking on the phone icon in the left chat margin. I am a Firefox
user and have not tested this with chrome etc. It has not happened if i
dont install google-talkplugin so it is quite possible that the plugin
is to blame.

Symptom
===
The left mouse button on all attached mice - USB , Trackpad and touch - will
not do anything however the right mouse button continues to work. This
happens to all applications and also to the desktop. The keyboard continues to
function as normal.

When this occurs , my solution is to Alt-F4 close all windows and log
out of the X session. When I re-login the left mouse button works as
normal.

This is an irritant and work disruptor as I have to save all browser and
desktop applications to safe state before I logout to reset the mouse. I will
appreciate any soltion or workaround.

[Bug 1290002] [NEW] Volume wheel (Dell keyboard) not adjusting Ubuntu volume properly after update

2014-03-09 Thread Harry P
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS

I run update on Ubuntu 12.04 64Bit on 2014-03-07, and after restarting
my pc, the keyboard volume wheel doesn't adjust the volume in Ubuntu OS
anymore.

Keyboard is Dell X295D Multimedia USB Keyboard (Greek)

I can confirm that the volume wheel is not malfunctioned because the

[Bug 1069132] [NEW] cannot resume from hibernate

2012-10-20 Thread Harry P
Public bug reported:

Have had this problem for a year or so now, so it affected versions
11.10, 12.04, 12.10. I've installed s2disk, which at least lets the
computer complete the hibernation, but the system hangs during the
'resuming from disk' splash screen.

Not sure how I can help debug further?

[Bug 1069104] Re: Gnome-shell broken since quantal upgrade

2012-10-20 Thread Harry P
Okay, having looked through the two gdmSessionLog.txt files, I found
this line:

gnome-session[3819]: WARNING: Failed to start app: Unable to start
application: Failed to execute child process "/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome
/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1" (No such file or directory)

I did an apt-get install policykit-1-gnome, and it seems to have fixed the
issue.

Here's a similar sounding bug:
https://bugs.mageia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7554

So, does that mean the problem was there is a missing dependency for the
gnome-shell package? That it should add policykit-1-gnome as a
dependency?

[Bug 1069104] Re: Gnome-shell broken since quantal upgrade

2012-10-20 Thread Harry P
Added some additional logs from apport-collect, collected while I'd
actually logged into a broken gnome-shell, just in case they show the
errors more accurately -- I ran the original ubuntu-bug command from a
successful unity login.
