I'm connecting to a Gutsy remote from a Debian Sid gdm client. It kept
crashing, like everyone mentioned above, but I followed Steve's advice
to "setting the remote greeter to 'plain with facebrowser' instead of
'same as local' " and followed Israel's advice to change
DisallowTCP=false in the gdm.conf file, and everything works now. I
tried just changing DisallowTCP=false, but that didn't solve anything. I
don't know if it really did anything at all (I was too lazy to change it
back), and it was probably Steve's solution that fixed it.

If this workaround fixes things for people, I would agree that this is a
low priority.  You can still have a background picture if you set it as
the Logo file if you need a pretty login screen.
