[Bug 992424] Re: ext4 filesystem errors on SSD disk
Wife has a U300s running Debian Mint. Got bit recently w/ custom 3.5.2 (standard .config updated with defaults and compiled). I'm compiling 3.8.4 on it now (again debian mint standard .config updated w/ defaults for 3.8.4) to see if that fixes it. Filesystem is ext4. I know I'm on ubuntu launchpad web site versus mint/debian/upstream but read through the problems here. Wife says system never ran on battery to battery death (I asked). However she likely suspends the system every evening. Don't know if that triggered the file system corruption. I'm frustrated (calmly so) and wondering whether JFS or bleeding edge kernel or ? what ? will fix. This is the only SSD in my house (of 5 house computers) and the only computer whose file system trashes this way. As a U300s (will never buy again) you cannot pop in a standard replacement SSD (non standard SSD). Again, hope this adds some insight. [Bug 356508] [NEW] radeon 3300 locks up screen w/ any driver
Public bug reported: This may be a duplicate of 284408, but is more general than that bug report (I added a comment to it). I recently upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 beta. Under 8.10 I had run fglrx driver downloaded from ati web site. Motherboard is Gigabyte GA-MA790GP with built in radeon hd3300 and 4 G of RAM (all slots filled). I've tried radeon, radeonhd, vesa, and fglrx drivers. I've also tried to build most recent radeonhd from git, and the most recent fglrx driver from amd/ati web site. In all cases the screen freezes and then you cannot even ctrl-alt-f1 over to a console. It is possible to ssh into the box. (Note that latest fglrx driver from ati does not install due to version of X, etc., so it does not freeze, it just does not install.) Googling around it seems the problem may be related to having all memory slots filled, i.e. if I pull two memory sticks and drop back to 2G then it might work. I haven't tried that. But that might explain why someone might believe 3300 works in Jaunty, if they tested on a system without all memory slots filled. I will be glad to assist in debugging this, but I'd appreciate working w/ someone on Ubuntu's side who has an idea of what the problem might be so I'm not just shooting in the dark. I've lost a good bit of time trying to get some version of X running (all failed) and the system is down for the count until I get this fixed. Thanks. I may well have messed up my system by trying to compile radeonhd from git for it to get something to work. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- radeon 3300 locks up screen w/ any driver https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/356508 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Please provide a clear "do this and then this" sequence to fix a trashed Intrepid->Jaunty upgrade. For example, while there's mention of an out of date python central control file causing this problem it would be nice if someone could write: * in file /etc/blat/blat.conf * add/common/delete the following lines * run apt-get install python-central or whatever. Please remember that what is second nature for you, the python maintainers, is black magic for many of us who just assume python runs. Because the upgrade is currently so broken I'm assuming sequences of update/dist-upgrade can't untangle, and, so far this morning, that's been the case. If this should work, but just not for X hours/days/? until changes percolate through the mirrors I'd appreciate a simple "please hold tight till Saturday morning (or whatever) and then let a standard aptitude update && aptitude dist-upgrade fix it." --- Thanks. -- package python2.6-minimal 2.6.1-1ubuntu8 failed to install/upgrade: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/354228 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

A new Abiword document failed. I tried repeatedly. They all failed. I tried restarting in cups admin and they all stopped. I tried quiting all of my Abiword instances, then restarting Abiword, opening up the problem doc and trying to print that again. Failed again. I printed off to PDF, opened up that document in evince and printed that off successfully (from client sys evince to server HP printer). Hence I do not know if the issue is in Abiword, cups, or the regular expression parser that was picked up by the update. ** Affects: abiword (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- cups not printing from abiword https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/194384 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 194384] Re: cups not printing from abiword
At the moment I've shifted over to another ubuntu gutsy desktop for my main development machine. It had libgnomeprint15 on it. Abiword successfully prints multiple times to the printer from this desktop w/ libgnomeprint15 on it. I don't know if an interim update to some other package is affecting this or not. It would be a minor hassle, but let me know if it would be useful for me to remove the libgnomeprint15 package and retry the test. -- cups not printing from abiword https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/194384 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 61205] Re: no option to disable temporarily
How do I disable the evolution email notifier entirely? I may stop using gnome for this one reason. Some 1000 spams come to my server every day, of which some 900 are filtered out by the server. But almost a hundred hit Evolution every day. Evolution manages to filter 2/3rds of those spam. But I'm still left with that #!(*% icon popping up every few minutes with the drop down notification that I have email which is almost always spam. I've poked around in Evolution and Session start and don't see how to turn that annoyance off. Side issue is there is more than one session start program w/ no name/description. [Bug 154662] most recent update in gutsy broke printing to remote cups printer
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: cupsys I've been running gutsy rc and now gutsy final for over a month on my laptop. Printing had worked fine to a remote printer attached in my office LAN to a feisty server up until recently. I don't print often, so cannot say exactly at what point printing stopped working in gutsy. The same feisty server cups printer that is invisible to gutsy is being seen and printed to just fine by a Mac OS X box and a separate Feisty desktop. When I use the printer config tool (gnome Sys->Admin->Printing) and enter the server I want it to browse for IPP printers it hangs forever and I have to kill it. [Bug 132053] Re: Typing in text form in Firefox becomes very slow in Gutsy
I spent a couple hours this morning thrashing this and was not able to setup a working flgrx restricted compiz environment on my gutsy (current as of last night) system. What I did to test: dropped fglrx from the restricted list in /etc/default/linux-res* rebooted (to insure picking up linux-restr* version of fglrx and confirmed that version in /var/log/X*log moved the two *glx* files back into /etc/X11/Xsession.d modified my xorg.conf as per what I ran across on the web: Section "Device" Identifier "X1600" Driver "fglrx" Option "VideoOverlay" "off" Option "OpenGLOverlay" "on" BusID "PCI:1:0:0" EndSection Section "DRI" Mode 0666 EndSection Section "Extensions" Option "Composite" "enable" EndSection Section "ServerFlags" Option "AIGLX" "off" EndSection and restarted /etc/X11/gdm result was glxgears ran, through jerky, and fglrx_glxgears did not run at all due to missing DRI on DISPLAY :1.0 Firefox was ungodly slow w/ text input and some of the gnome applets were consuming lots of CPU I reverted ... I'm now running ati's fglrx binary in a gnome non-compiz env by moving the two glx files out of the way in /etc/X11/Xsession.d and blocking the gutsy fglrx module in /etc/default/linux-res* and restarting gdm. With those changes firefox is fast, movies work (mplayer -fs -vo gl2 *.mp*), and I don't have compix I may have an odd env. having upgraded from feisty w/ my custom xorg.conf but I don't know what I could be doing wrong. My plan is to wait for the upcoming ati binary flgrx that supports compiz directly. -- Typing in text form in Firefox becomes very slow in Gutsy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/132053 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 132053] Re: Typing in text form in Firefox becomes very slow in Gutsy
I tracked this down to the xgl server and my fglrx. I don't know if it occurs on non-fglrx systems or on all fglrx systems. A temporary fix until Ubuntu corrects this problem (PLEASE!!) is to: (as root, however you get there ...) cd /etc/X11/Xsession.d mkdir SAVE mv ??xserver-xgl_start-server SAVE then log out and log back in, which, I believe, restarts your xserver. I ususally ctl-alt-f1 and login as root on that that terminal (I've given root a password so I can log in as root), and /etc/init.d/gdm restart The clue was noting gutsy had set DISPLAY to :1.0 which was the flag that the xservers were layered (? not certain I'm saying this right). And that I needed to STOP the layering. FWIW ... in another month or two rumors are that AMD/ATI will finally have fglrx able to handle the eye candy w/o the layered xserver kludge. -- Typing in text form in Firefox becomes very slow in Gutsy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/132053 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 121653] Re: [gutsy] Suspend to Ram does not work on Z61m
Ubuntu may want to consider this a show stopper for releasing gutsy, or at least flag all over the place this problem. Reason I say that is if 5% of all of your potential upgraders are laptops running ati graphics (just shooting in the dark re percentage, but if anything I assume the actual number is higher than 5%) then 5% of all Ubuntu users will feel badly burned by the upgrade to gutsy. A broken suspend, when suspend worked fine in Edgy, is a critical bug. BTW, I'm running ati's latest stable release of fglrx and this suspend problem shows up in it as well. I switched to ati's fglrx from ubuntu's in the hope that the ati/glx slowdown would be fixed (wasn't, had to disable glx server). -- [gutsy] Suspend to Ram does not work on Z61m https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/121653 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 138714] Re: mysql upgrade feisty to gutsy breaks
I was upgrading from current version of feisty (I update regularly) to gutsy via changing entries in /etc/apt/sources.list and then 'apt-get update' followed by 'apt-get dist-upgrade' MySql failed with a message re a bad hosts table. I believe the 4.x to 5.x change in mysql modified several table layouts. On the internet some recommendations were to just 'rm blat' a number of offending tables and let mysql rebuild them. That partially worked, but also dropped the magical [EMAIL PROTECTED] (or something similar) user record. I then followed internet recommendations for fixing that, but that failed as well. I was left with something that complained about missing entries in some key tables when running mysqlcheck -A --auto-repair I finally just apt-get remove'ed with purge, then reinstalled. It now works. -- mysql upgrade feisty to gutsy breaks https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/138714 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 138714] mysql upgrade feisty to gutsy breaks
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: mysql-server A couple of days ago I upgraded my laptop from feisty to gutsy. I had a feisty mysql server database on the laptop. The upgrade broke the database. Following different googled "how to fix this" from the internet just dug the problem in deeper. I'm going to have to do a full purge and reload to get mysql back up and running. The bogus "how to fix" notes on the web are not your problem, but mysql should have performed the steps necessary for an automated upgrde (I assume use original mysql to dump the db to a sql file ready to create and load a new db, then wiped the original db, finally with new mysql recreating and then loading a new db in the correct format for mysql 5. ** Affects: mysql-dfsg-5.0 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- mysql upgrade feisty to gutsy breaks https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/138714 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 132053] Re: Typing in text form in Firefox becomes very slow in Gutsy
Evolution and firefox are both slow on my system re keyboard input. In took about a minute for the summary line to show up (maybe 1 second per character). In this comment area I'm typing 10 words ahead of what is being displayed. Ditto evolution when trying to type in a new email. Keyboard entry is fast in geany (IDE) and gnome-terminal -- both X apps. So it isn't all X apps have slow keyboard entry pick up. My system is an ATI 1500 laptop with fglrx for the display controller into X. This as an extremely nasty bug that will make any user quite unhappy. (I had to wait 15 seconds or more for the graphic display to catch up to the end of this sentence just before the parenthesis). [Bug 108900] feisty postgres 8.2 leaving other packages behind
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: pgadmin3 I just upgraded to feisty and saw the "postgres 8.1 is no longer supported ..." message. But then, when trying to setup the upgrade to postgres 8.2 I noticed that several postgres db packages in the feisty repositories are still wired to postgres 8.1 and w/o a corresponding 8.2 version. I believe postgis, pgadmin3, and others are affected. For instance, if you try to remove libpq4 (tied to pg 8.1) you will find yourself having to remove pgadmin3 which is dependent on pg 8.1. So, this bug report is a minor "okay, perhaps it's time to do some cleanup regarding the push to 8.2" flag. Also, hopefully I'll be flagged by email as this cleanup happens via this bug report so I know when I can actually upgrade to 8.2.
