I have trouble installing v4.3-rc1-unstable since the only debian

and the result is exactly the same as what I reported for 3.16.0.

[Bug 1495110] Re: External VGA port on laptop does not work anymore

2015-09-14 Thread Howard Cheng
I use this laptop for teaching, so the only thing I know is that it was
working in April and it's no longer working in September (I haven't
tried in between). The reason I suspected it was the kernel was based
on a web search of similar problems (though none seems exactly the same
as mine, and most seem to say 3.16.0 fixes things).

I may not be able to get to trying a new kernel until later this week,
but I'll report when I have it done.

[Bug 1495110] [NEW] External VGA port on laptop does not work anymore

2015-09-12 Thread Howard Cheng
Public bug reported:

I have been using the laptop for almost 2 years now, and I have not had
problem connecting to a projector via the external VGA port until
recently. Sometime between April and now, there must have been a kernel
upgrade that messed it up. I saw a few other bug reports that
eventually suggests I go to kernel 3.16.0.

When I was on 3.13.0-63, my VGA output would work with the boot up
screen and the log in screen. But once I log on the VGA port seems to
be inactive and I can't get the output back. HDMI still seems to work,
though the projectors I have access to don't have HDMI inputs.

After I upgraded to 3.16.0, the VGA output would still work during the
boot up and log in. Again, once I log on the VGA stopped working.
However, when I switched to a text terminal (e.g. Ctrl-Alt-F1) I can see
the VGA output again. As soon as I switch back to GUI the VGA output
stopped working. The "Display" setting in System Settings cannot find
an external monitor, nor could xrandr.

My current work around is to use the HDMI port with an HDMI -> VGA
converter. That seems to do the trick for now. Both Display setting
and xrandr can see the HDMI connection.

[Bug 887423] [NEW] Alt-tab does not work in Unity 2D

2011-11-07 Thread Howard Cheng
Public bug reported:

I recently upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10. I had to switch to Unity 2D
because of bug #886696, and now Alt-Tab does not work at all: nothing
happens when I press Alt-Tab. I can still switch windows by pulling the
panel on the left. I have already looked at bug #845731 (which has the
same symptoms) but the solution there does not work at all.

2011-11-05 Thread Howard Cheng
Public bug reported:

My system crashes every time I attempt to switch user. The whole system

[Bug 773789] [NEW] Distribution upgrade to 11.04 failed silently when directory has wrong permission

2011-04-29 Thread Howard Cheng
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: update-manager

I tried to upgrade from 10.10 to 11.04 using update-manager started from
the System menu. I clicked "Upgrade" to bring up the release notes, and
then clicked "Upgrade" again. At this point I get the release notes
window closes and I get back the previous window (the one when update
manager first starts). There was no indication of what has gone wrong
(or even that anything had gone wrong).

When I ran update-manager from command line, I see the following error
message:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/UpdateManager/UpdateManager.py", line
962, in on_button_dist_upgrade_clicked
fetcher.run()
  File

 line 217, in fetchDistUpgrader
result = fetcher.run()
SystemError: E:Archives directory /var/cache/apt/archives/partial is missing. -
Acquire (13: Permission denied)

Somehow my directory has the wrong permission. That was easily fixed.

The "bug" here is that the error message should be reported so the user
can do something about it, and not just fail silently leaving the user
waiting to see if anything is happening (though I could tell from ps
that nothing was happening).

[Bug 701916] Re: Incremental Backup not working in ver. 0.11.3

2011-04-04 Thread Howard Cheng
I am experiencing the same symptoms but without samba and only on a
single machine, and only one sbackup runs at a time I put my info in
#722111 because that was the first bug that I found that was similar to
mine, but I think this bug is more appropriate. Please see my reports
there.

[Bug 605133] Re: Suspend/hibernate/resume failure in Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit on HP Pavilion dv4t-1000

2010-07-31 Thread Howard Cheng
My pm-suspend.log.

I have turned off fglrx and just used the radeon driver, but still the
same problem. The only difference is that my monitor goes into power
saving mode before it hangs.

[Bug 605133] Re: Suspend/hibernate/resume failure in Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit on HP Pavilion dv4t-1000

2010-07-28 Thread Howard Cheng
I have a similar problem. Just installed 10.04LTS (amd64) on my new
computer (Gateway DX4831-03C) with the latest updates, using fglrx
driver.

Suspend and hibernate both fail at invocation: stuck at a blank screen
(not power saving mode) and the computer is no longer responsive.

[Bug 576148] [NEW] Login screen (gdm) garbled on start up after upgrade to 10.04 LTS

2010-05-05 Thread Howard Cheng
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

After booting, I get an garbled screen (in text mode?) but there is a
mouse cursor that can be moved (but not much else). If I switch to a
different virtual terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1), I get a black (but bright)
screen with no login prompt. Now I press Ctrl-Alt-F7 and then the gdm
login screen shows up properly.

I am also unable to perform "switch user" sometimes (resulting in a
blank screen with the mouse cursor). I do not know if these two things
are related.
