[Bug 1921637] Re: [Lenovo ideapad 720S-13IKB] Flickering display

2021-04-23 Thread Hubert Swic
Update: No ubuntu 21.04 still has this issue, didnt need to even install
it. As soon as I booted from USB it would tear and flicker. Once the
screen appeared for the installation, mouse movement would trigger more
tearing.

Video showing the issue from 10min ago.

^ This is an older video as I'm unable to record one at the moment,
although I can later today. The issue from this video was from a while
ago, back then the issue only occurred when the screen went to sleep and
was waken up. Now the issue starts from the moment the user selection
appears.

2. I have tried that before, the issue persists

3. I have tried that before, the issue persists

I have tried different Linux OS'es and I've tried different Ubuntu
Releases they all behave identically. The only operating system that
does not reproduce this issue is Windows, but that's far from ideal.

[Bug 1921637] [NEW] Intel UHD Graphics 620

2021-03-28 Thread Hubert Swic
Public bug reported:

Running Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS.

Having consistent screen flickering on my display. No issues on Windows,
only on Linux OS. The screen glitches and flickers consistently
regardless of what I do. Straight from booting into user selection
screen. The BIOS (Lenovo) Logo does not flicker, only once Linux is
loaded that flickering begins. I have a 4k display on my laptop, and I
have tried running 1080p 120Hz / 60Hz, 4K whatever. The flickering never
stops.

Any help would be greatly appreciated I'm happy to send dmesg or any
extra debugging necessary.

After intensive research and asking other forums, it has been said that
the issue is with the Intel Driver, specifically the above package
reported.

Many thanks,
Hubert

This is more likely a themeing bug, either in the theme or in the

[Bug 1831808] [NEW] nexttowardl for ppc64el generates wrong results

2019-06-05 Thread Hubert Tong
Public bug reported:

On PPC, the non-IEEE 128-bit long double is represented as a pair of
doubles. This means that for 1.L, the next representable value in the
direction of 2.L should be 1.L + DBL_EPSILON. The nexttowardl function
does not seem to produce such a result.

To reproduce, compile and link the following C program and run the
resulting executable. The actual output and the expected output is
provided below.

### SOURCE ():
long double nexttowardl(long double, long double);
int printf(const char *, ...);

int main(void) {
  long double eps = nexttowardl(0.L, 1.L);
  long double ans = nexttowardl(1.L, 2.L);
  long double ref = 1.L + eps;
  typedef unsigned char *ucp;
  for (ucp p = (ucp) p < (ucp)&1[]; ++p) {
printf("%02hhx", *p);
  }
  printf("\n");
  for (ucp p = (ucp) p < (ucp)&1[]; ++p) {

[Bug 1761999] Re: general protection fault: 0000 [#1] SMP NOPTI

2018-09-08 Thread Hubert Johannsen
I had an ugly instance of this problem on an EPYC processor. Not sure what it
was related to.
It all started with errors during package upgrades.
sudo apt-get update >> success
sudo apt-get upgrade >> segmentation fault
The upgrade left several packages in a half-installed state (attach Part 1),
and basic os command started to crash (attach Part 2).
In the syslog I had "general protection fault: [#1] SMP NOPTI" with
multiple processes, see a detail failure log in attach Part 3 and Part 4.
Attach Part 5 lists numerous processes that had the same failure as Part 4.
The system load started to climb, from idle, progressively by about 1 point per
3-5 min, until levels like 20-30, at this point it was very difficult to enter
and reboot the system. I tried and managed to have it respond with reboot -f
but it had the problem still and system did not come up correctly, until we
performed a physical shutdown and restart. From then the system seems clean. I
corrected the packages by reinstallation, and so far no problem.
Very frightening!
Can it be related to some problem between Ubuntu and the Ryzen/EPYC technology?

Please comment if you think this is a completely different bug.
Thanks!

[Bug 1743102] [NEW] unity start menu disappears on mouse over, launcher doesn't open

2018-01-13 Thread Hubert Ferder
Public bug reported:

lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS
Release:16.04

apt-cache policy unity
unity:
  Installiert:   7.4.0+16.04.20160906-0ubuntu1
  Installationskandidat: 7.4.0+16.04.20160906-0ubuntu1
  Versionstabelle:
 *** 7.4.0+16.04.20160906-0ubuntu1 500
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial-updates/main amd64
Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 7.4.0+16.04.20160415-0ubuntu1 500
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu xenial/main amd64 Packages

What happens:
1. The launcher doesn't open on click.

2. When the mouse is over the unity start menu, it disappears after a
second and the whole desktop flickers for approx. two seconds. Programs
can be used (if started via click fast enough). Shortcuts for programs
work.

The problem started after installing these updates on 2017-01-08:
poppler-utils libgles2-mesa libglapi-mesa libxtracker2 libegl1-mesa libgbm1
libwayland-egl1-mesa libgl1-mesa-dri libgl1-mesa-glx libpoppler-glib8
libpoppler58

I already forced reinstalling of those packages. I made a reset of the
configuration of compiz and unity, too. Nothing changed.

[Bug 1585111] Re: net rpc join fails in Ubuntu 16.04

2017-11-06 Thread Hubert Higelin
I tried with the parameters indicated by @metze in # 13. I made a second
attempt by adding allow nt4 crypto = Yes. Both attempts failed. Attached
is the copy of the testparm and net rpc join outputs of the first
attempt. The outputs for the second attempt are similar.

[Bug 1585111] Re: net rpc join fails in Ubuntu 16.04

2017-10-31 Thread Hubert Higelin
For the moment, it is still impossible to join an NT4 domain. (PDC and BDC are
Windows NT4.0 Service Pack 6.) This since Ubuntu 16.04 (before there was no
problem).
My last attempt: 31/10/2017 with a Ubuntu server 16.04.3

to Xubuntu 14.04 (Access denied for Windows an Samba clients). About one
year latter they became accessible again. Probably due to a samba
upgrade.

2) The shares became inaccessible again after upgrade to Xubuntu 16,04. I tried
all combinations of client use spnego = no, client NTLMv2 auth = no, allow nt4
crypto = yes, require strong key = no without success. I removed the machine
from the domain (Using Windows NT4 server manager).
The machine can’t join the NT4 domain :
No realm has been specified! Do you really want to join an Active Directory
server?
Failed to join domain: failed to lookup DC info for domain xx over rpc:
Access denied

(The smb.conf is for a NT4 domain, not for Active Directory. I tried all
the cripto settings again.)

3) New machines with Xubuntu 16.04 and Ubuntu server 16.04.2 have never been
able to join the domain : same message.

Primary an backup domain controller are Winndows NT4,0 Service pack 6.

As temporary solution, I moved the shares to Windows running in
VirtualBox with bridged network access.

[Bug 1684146] Re: package samba 2:4.3.11+dfsg-0ubuntu0.16.04.6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2017-06-01 Thread Hubert Higelin
PDC and BDC are NT4.0 Service Pack 6
Yes hh is domain administrator
The PDC and BDC IP addresses are in smb.conf. net rpc join -S PDC_IP_address
or PDC_name fail also.
First I tried without crypto settings and with all possible crypto settings
combination. Nothing works.

There is a Bug # 1585111 : net rpc join fail on Ubuntu 16.04 on
launchpad. It may be better not to add another one.

While waiting for the bug to be solved, we have no choice but to use
Windows in VirtualBox.

[Bug 1684146] Re: package samba 2:4.3.11+dfsg-0ubuntu0.16.04.6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2017-05-30 Thread Hubert Higelin
Hello

The samba package install problem do not occur anymore.
But since upgrade to 16.04 each access to a samba share need a authentication
and scheduled tasks fails. (After upgrade from 12.04 to 14.04 the same problem
occurred for several month before been solved by a update.)
I removed the machine from the domain an tried to join again. The join fail.

[Bug 1590844] Re: Call with Bluetooth headset not working [Meizu Pro 5 Ubuntu Edition]

2017-01-25 Thread Hubert Plissonneau
Hello guys , this bug also affect me . I have this meizu pro 5 for 6 months ,
bluetooth is working fine to play music , but send only noise when you have to
call , or when you receive a call .
I tested with sena SMH10 ( bike headset and intercom ) , and with my Garmin
zumo 660 GPS acting as headset with the same results : big noise .

All theses devices was working fine with my android smartphone .
Sending and receiving call is a key point for a smartphone ,

Reading the bug notes , i see nobody is assigned on this bug .
Is somebody can explain if someone from canonical is still working on this
critcal issue ?

Rgds.
Hubert.

[Bug 725367] Re: primes returns composites

2016-10-18 Thread Hubert depesz Lubaczewski
I know this is not the most world-shattering bug, but any chance we
could see a fix for this?

primes still (in 2016!) shows composites, which can be seen by doing:

=$ primes 35198908481059600 35198908481059602
35198908481059601

=$ factor 35198908481059601

[Bug 1584540] Re: [Kubuntu 16.04] Choosing a widget style has no effect

2016-07-07 Thread Matt Hubert
I was having a ton of issues with the style of KDE when installing
kubuntu-desktop on 16.04, including this bug.

Adding "QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME=kde" to my .profile solved a lot of them.

Found that from here:

[Bug 1550779] Re: [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO underrun - Xorg glitches

2016-07-06 Thread Hubert Hesse
I don't see the need for a bisect. To quote
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/1522922/comments/125
"There's one thing I still don't understand... the root of the problem was
identified in https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=91393#c25;

The associated patch
http://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/1466162081-12042-1-git-send-email-mika.kah...@intel.com
 revert two commits identified there.
These have to backported to archive the same experience as on the latest 4.6

My original question from #14 remains
Can anyone confirm the steps I took where all right?
What's the difference between the kernel I compiled and the officially
distributed one (4.2.0-27)? Any patches to reproduce the official binary?

[Bug 1595469] [NEW] Logout umounts encrypted home only every second logout (console|ssh)

2016-06-23 Thread Hubert Krause
Public bug reported:

* I've created a user with adduser --encrypted-home testuser.
* when I login via console and logout afterwards with ctrl + d the encrypted
Filesystem is still mounted.
* if I login again and logout via ctrl + d the encrypted filesystem is
succesfully dismounted.
* with ssh there is the same behavior but: After logout the first time there is
a remaining ssh process of the testuser. I have to kill this process to
reproduce the effect. If I don't kill that Process the mount will stay for ever.
* This remaining ssh process belongs to the init process:
pstree -s 10680

[Bug 1550779] Re: [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO underrun - Xorg glitches

2016-05-19 Thread Hubert Hesse
I can also confirm that upgrading to 16.04 and using a 4.6 kernel
(http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.6-yakkety/) solves the
issue for me.

[Bug 1550779] Re: [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO underrun - Xorg glitches

2016-05-14 Thread Hubert Hesse
I'm still seeing the issue with latest:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-next/current/
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.4.10-xenial/
Where other people report the issues are fixed for them

However not as severe as with 4.2.0-30.36

Can someone please advise what to do? My questions from #14 are still
unaddressed:
Can anyone confirm the steps I took where all right?
What's the difference between the kernel I compiled and the officially
distributed one (4.2.0-27)? Any patches to reproduce the official binary?

[Bug 1560686] [NEW] Invalid assembly is generated when using intel syntax

2016-03-22 Thread Hubert
Public bug reported:

Invalid assembly code is generated when intel syntax (-masm=intel) is
used and there are any symbols of the same name as CPU register. For
example:

int ST = 42;
int main() {
return ST;
}

Will produce messages like:
/tmp/ccglHDgh.s: Assembler messages:
/tmp/ccglHDgh.s:21: Error: invalid use of register

The problem is that GCC will generate nonsense like that:
mov eax, DWORD PTR ST[rip]

In case of such trivial example, it is very easy to find what the
problem is but it can be really tricky to find the cause in larger
projects. I expect that the compiler should at least generate some clear
warning that using such names can cause problems.

** Affects: gcc-5 (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Tags: assembly gcc intel

[Bug 1550779] Re: [i915]] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO underrun - Xorg glitches

2016-02-28 Thread Hubert Hesse
So it turn out when I rebuild the package for 4.2.0-27 I already see
that glitches occurring in that specific kernel version. So it look like
there is difference between the package I built and the official package
or I screwed up the build process?

Here is what I did, I have to say the wik page you linked was very
verbose. I know what git bisect works, however I don't how to build a
Ubuntu kernel package (kteam-tools produced some errors for me)

I took the steps from
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/GitKernelBuild#Using_Ubuntu_Kernel_Configuration
Can you check if those steps should produce a correct package?

sudo apt-get install git build-essential kernel-package fakeroot
libncurses5-dev libssl-dev ccache --no-install-recommends # because of
texlive

git clone git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ubuntu-wily.git
cd ubuntu-wily/
cp -a /usr/share/kernel-package ubuntu-package

cp debian/control-scripts/{postinst,postrm,preinst,prerm}
ubuntu-package/pkg/image/
cp debian/control-scripts/headers-postinst ubuntu-package/pkg/headers/

# set up ccache because I thought this will save time while bisecting --
however mostly cache misses
vim ~/.bashrc
if [ -d /usr/lib/ccache ]; then
export PATH=/usr/lib/ccache:"${PATH}"
export CCACHE_NLEVELS=5
fi
ccache -M 10G

cp /boot/config-4.2.0-27-generic .config
make localmodconfig # because building all modules takes forever
make oldconfig

CONCURRENCY_LEVEL=`getconf _NPROCESSORS_ONLN` fakeroot make-kpkg
--initrd --append-to-version=-custom --overlay-dir=$(pwd)/ubuntu-package
kernel_image kernel_headers

cd ..
dpkg -i *.deb

#git tag --list
#git bisect start
#git bisect good Ubuntu-4.2.0-27.32
#git bisect bad Ubuntu-4.2.0-30.36
# Here I did noticed that after the 6 commits all commits where bad. Then I
checked the assumption that "Ubuntu-4.2.0-27.32" was good, it was not

[Bug 1427877] Re: Media, brightness and volume keys don't work with GNOME 3.15.90

2015-06-30 Thread Hubert Hesse
Hey there Tim

thanks for the fix.
1) Was that a regression and you saw some kind a delta to the previous version?
Is that possible?
Thats one think I wished for while I was debugging
2) Since this is runtime, there should be some kind of integration test,
correct? If so how do write one so similar incidents happen again

[Bug 1427877] Re: Media, brightness and volume keys don't work with GNOME 3.15.90

2015-06-26 Thread Hubert Hesse
Please see the updated conversation in the gnome Bugtracker.

For me I looks like this a thing related to (d/p/revert-gsettings-
removals.patch: Refreshed), because if I disable the wacom plugin..

sudo mv /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon-3.0/wacom.gnome-settings-plugin
/usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon-3.0/.wacom.gnome-settings-plugin.bak

gsd works as expected again. (yay!)

@Joe can you confirm?

I don't why we didn't catch that earlier. Is it the case the patches are
already applied in the source I download with `apt-get source
gnome-settings-daemon` and I have to revert the manually? I thought it would
suffice to delete all patches in debian/patches directory.

Also in the patch there is a reference to ( plugins/power/gsd-power-
manager.c  | 32 +), but the actual
change is not there.

[Bug 1427877] Re: Media, brightness and volume keys don't work with GNOME 3.15.90

2015-06-22 Thread Hubert Hesse
I tried rebuilding gnome-settings-daemon from the ppa sources, but
deleted all the debian/patches files. then restarted gnome-settings-
daemon and gnome-shell, but still had the same problem with keyboard
shortcuts not working

I did the same thing, but no luck. Maybe we have to rebuilt other
packages without Debian related patches as well? Any hints or
suggestions are appreciated.

[Bug 1450338] [NEW] Keyboard shortcuts that use windows key do not work

2015-04-30 Thread Hubert depesz Lubaczewski
Public bug reported:

I installed KUbuntu 15.04 on fresh system, and noticed that when I make
a session, and assign keyboard shortcut to run this session (like ctrl-
shift-t runs new Shell') - it works, as long as the shortcut doesn't
use windows key.

I can enter such shortcut, and it's displayed correctly as Meta+M (for
example), but upon pressing windows-m, I'm getting some control
characters sent to terminal, and not new tab opened with defined
session.

It looks, that (at least for meta-m) the generated sequence is:
ctrl-x, @, s, m.

[Bug 1450340] [NEW] Scripts added to autostart do not show in system settings

2015-04-30 Thread Hubert depesz Lubaczewski
Public bug reported:

I installed KUbuntu 15.04 on fresh system. Then I added some scripts to
autostart, using:

The scripts have been correctly symlinked in $HOME/.config/autostart/

[Bug 999462] Re: ExpressCard34 slot not hotplugable after boot

2015-04-05 Thread Hubert Hesse
I have to retract my statement. I'm using a Lenovo x220.
Disabling PCI Express Power management (Config - Power) via Bios resolves
the issue for me. Before Ubuntu became unresponsive (like the card is throwing
a lot of interrupts) after the *2nd* hot-plug, first one seems fine though. On
AC or Battery did not change the behavior.

Also I noticed ACPI FADT declares the system doesn't support PCIe ASPM
in dmesg, so I'm not sure this bug is even related. I leave it here for
people who have similar issues :)

2013-11-17 Thread Hubert Hahn
Hello,

  on several other EEEPC's I run (700 4G and 900a) the installation run
without any problem. Also on the hhnb06 (a 700 4G, 2GB memory, but
'system disk' on an 32GB USB stick (internal flash defect...)) the instalation
went fine after reboot of the machine. I think this bug can be closed if no
other people have problems. Thank you!

Best regards

[Bug 1198535] [NEW] mhddfs Use unallocated memory which may cause undefined behaviour

2013-07-06 Thread Hubert
Public bug reported:

In the portion of code copied below from mhddfs/main.c, version 0.1.38, the
function mhdd_statfs does:
 stats = calloc(mhdd.cdirs, sizeof(struct statvfs));
 devices = calloc(mhdd.cdirs, sizeof(dev_t));
and it should do:
 stats = calloc(mhdd.cdirs, mhdd.cdirs*sizeof(struct statvfs));
 devices = calloc(mhdd.cdirs, mhdd.cdirs*sizeof(dev_t));
because they are used as arrays with stats[i] and devices[i]

I'm not 100% sure about this being an actual error, and I'm guessing this may
be working with some compilers or in some circumstances, yet I think this:
  int ret = statvfs(mhdd.dirs[i], stats+i);
should be replaced by this:
  int ret = statvfs(mhdd.dirs[i], stats[i]);

Here is the portion of code:

static int mhdd_statfs(const char *path, struct statvfs *buf)
{
 int i, j;
 struct statvfs * stats;
 struct stat st;
 dev_t * devices;

 mhdd_debug(MHDD_MSG, mhdd_statfs: %s\n, path);

 stats = calloc(mhdd.cdirs, sizeof(struct statvfs));  // HERE
 devices = calloc(mhdd.cdirs, sizeof(dev_t)); //HERE

  if (ret != 0) {

   free(devices);
   return -errno;

  ret = stat(mhdd.dirs[i], st);
  if (ret != 0) {
   free(stats);
   free(devices);
   return -errno;
  }
  devices[i] = st.st_dev;
 }

 unsigned long
  min_block = stats[0].f_bsize,
  min_frame = stats[0].f_frsize;

 for (i = 1; imhdd.cdirs; i++) {

  if (min_framestats[i].f_frsize) min_frame = stats[i].f_frsize;

...
}

2013-03-18 Thread Hubert FONGARNAND
Mmm... your last comment : I red somewhere that this has something to do with
static electricity and the USB ports
inspire me!

Because since i don't use the USB dongle for my wireless mouse anymore,
the problem has gone! So the problem is (in my case) clearly related to
USB ports...

[Bug 1079440] Re: i945: Random complete freeze using dual monitors

2013-03-12 Thread Hubert Hesse
With 12.10 I can confirm the multi monitor setup problem.
With 13.04 (3.8.0-12 generic) this problem also occurs also without using a
second monitor. Ctrl+Alt+F1 doesn't work. Via SSH I can see that Xorg uses up
99% of one CPU core. I don't see any relevant output in X.org.0.log or dmesg.

Keith's workaround `sudo taskset -pa 1 $(pgrep -x Xorg` fixes the issue
temporarily.

I'm able to help with further logs or debugging.

[Bug 1154092] [NEW] ligthdm immediately returns to greeter after succesful login

2013-03-12 Thread Hubert Hesse
Public bug reported:

On ubuntu 13.04 beta ligthdm immediately returns from session to greeter after
succesful login.
This bug is related to, I summarize to important information from there:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/944784
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/944736

However I never bothered to check if that bug was fixed, because I
switched to gdm to log into sessions now.

=Summary=

After login lightdm throws me back to console and I can see startup
output for a sec. I have been using unity-3d before. But I tried all
unity2d, gnome, deleted the .dmrc and so forth. Guest login works,
creating a new user works.

in syslog there is a line
Mar 12 14:55:04 caput sudo: pam_ecryptfs: pam_sm_authenticate: /home/hub is
already mounted

I provide the lightdm-log directory

[Bug 872778] Re: deja dup hanging on VM-Image

2013-01-18 Thread Hubert Hesse
I'm also affected by this bug. I stopped the backup of my 30GB VDI after
8h with apparently 0% success.

$ duplicity --version
duplicity 0.6.19

$deja-dup --version
deja-dup 24.0

For now I excluded my *.vdi files. What information can I provide?

[Bug 1054719] [NEW] grube-prob segfault during install and update using LVM + SoftRaid config

2012-09-22 Thread PENET Hubert
Public bug reported:

Hi

My system has a boot disk, simple no raid and data disks with LVM and
RAID.

During the install, the grub-probe segfault, leading to a non bootable
system.

I did remove the data disk, and the install complet without any problem.

After reinstalling the Data Disks (LVM + SoftRaid), the update of the
Kernel was imposible, the postconfig failed during the grub-update
process.

My device config :
Boot disks : Single Device, no raid /dev/sda1

Data Disks : 6 devices, soft Raid on the device, LVM using the soft raid
device.

[Bug 898807] Re: Clicking Install Updates button causes Update Manager window to gray out and become unresponsive; updates do not get installed

2012-03-19 Thread Paul Hubert
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 894671 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/894671

My update-manager does not freeze.
Its Install updates simply fails to function.

The button permits me to click but it performs nothing.

Likewise, software center will not update.

I completely removed, then reinstalled the aptdaemon items, but that had
no effect.

I am also unable to manage users.

This began with my UPGRADE from 64 bit 10.04 to 10.10 and subsequently
to the present 11.04 upgrade.

I had thought the problem might be in a user-space config file of some
sort, but have no idea where that might be.

Ultimately, I may install 12.04 from scratch in another partition, but
I'd LOVE to find the source of the current set of problems. I tend to
think they have a common cause.

[Bug 944736] Re: Fails to load any session

2012-03-02 Thread Hubert Hesse
Yes I can open a guest session(was disabled so I didn't tried that before).
Yes, I use the buid-in ecryptfs for my home directory.
In addition I found some:

Mar  2 14:55:04 caput sudo: pam_ecryptfs: pam_sm_authenticate: /home/hub is
already mounted
Mar  2 14:55:04 caput gnome-session[8194]: Gdk-WARNING: gnome-session: Fatal IO
error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.#012

in syslog

[Bug 944736] Re: Fails to load any session

2012-03-02 Thread Hubert Hesse
Sebastien, yes it does. After login it throws me back to console and I
can see startup output for a sec. Sorry for not pointing that out clear
enough. Yes, I have been using unity-3d before. But I tried all unity2d,
gnome, deleted the .dmrc and so forth.

Maybe its specific to my user profile. I will create two other users
(one with ecryptfs, one without)

Public bug reported:

Updated the system through update manager from kernel 2.6.38-11 and
couldn't boot into the new kernel (kernel panic, unable to mount root
fs). That was because there is no initrd.img-2.6.38-12-generic-pae image
in the /boot folder.

getting a kernel panic.
