Public bug reported: I believe adding better biometric authentication support would be extremely useful and could help people move to Linux from Windows. [Bug 1925985] Re: CVE-2021-22204
Thanks Alex, Paulo and Gregor. Great to have this released! And thanks for the learning opportunity. As in, my help probably didn't actually save you any time in the short run, because the only thing I effectively did was change the changelog of the upstream patch, and you had to redo that anyway because I wasn't experienced enough. But next time I'd know how to proceed. About the versioning, I wasn't really sure, because https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/UpdatePreparation#Packaging says 0.1, but I did not recall ever seeing such a package version, and dch automatically put 1 there. In retrospect I had all the information to conclude it should have been 0.1 though. Because I must say that the documentation is very well done. It was way easier to figure everything out than expected. (I had never used dch, debuild or debdiff before.) The full documentation is enormous, and the SecurityTeam wiki pages distill it to the essential which is much appreciated. The links to 'debdiff' are broken though, and I do not know where to report those, so I'll add them here: both https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SponsorshipProcess and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/SponsorsQueue link to https://packaging.ubuntu.com/html/traditional- packaging.html#creating-a-debdiff , which does not exist. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1925985 Title: CVE-2021-22204 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libimage-exiftool-perl/+bug/1925985/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1925985] Re: CVE-2021-22204
Following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/SponsorsQueue , I can now subscribe ubuntu-security-sponsors : 1. Your patch is in debdiff format It is. 2. The patch follows the security team update procedures. Especially: - targeted against the security pocket of a stable release I think so, but I'm not exactly sure what a "security pocket" is. This is a patch against 20.04 LTS to fix an arbitrary code execution, so it seems appropriate. I've updated the patch to have 'focal-security' as distribution, as described in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/UpdatePreparation#Packaging. - uses the correct version The version 11.88-1ubuntu1 is created by dch, so I'm assuming it is correct. (Maybe it should be 11.88-1ubuntu0.1 ?) - mentions a CVE, and preferably a LP bug #. The diff mentions CVE-2021-22204 and (LP: #1925985), which is this bug. - Check your .changes file to make sure that you have the right revision and distribution I've put 'focal-security' as distribution, which seemed the most appropriate. 3. All changes in the patch are intentional They are. 4. Your patch applies cleanly It does. 5. The Status and Assignment are correct I cannot change the status, but it seems OK. 6. Please comment on the testing performed. I've tested the patched package with echo_vakzz.jpg from https://hackerone.com/reports/1154542 on a development workstation. (So not on a clean Ubuntu installation.) - If all of the above is in order, please subscribe ubuntu-security-sponsors OK. ** Patch added: "update with focal-security as distribution" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libimage-exiftool-perl/+bug/1925985/+attachment/5503783/+files/libimage-exiftool-perl_11.88-1ubuntu1.debdiff -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1925985 Title: CVE-2021-22204 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libimage-exiftool-perl/+bug/1925985/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1925985] Re: CVE-2021-22204
Attached is a debdiff that fixes CVE-2021-22204 on libimage-exiftool- perl 11.88-1; dch automatically changed the version to 11.88-1ubuntu1. I simply checked out https://salsa.debian.org/perl-team/modules/packages /libimage-exiftool-perl/-/tree/debian/11.88-1 , cherry-picked https://salsa.debian.org/perl-team/modules/packages/libimage-exiftool- perl/-/commit/0347501fda93cb8366d6451aedcf258b34fb4a2b with the fix, and based the changelog on https://salsa.debian.org/perl- team/modules/packages/libimage-exiftool- perl/-/commit/5f175b3bb7db706cf840d8ee0f292a64e0abfae2 . The changes can be found in my forked project: https://gitlab.com/hugobuddel/libimage-exiftool-perl/-/tree/hb/fix- CVE-2021-22204 It works, and it is a rather simple patch. Yet this is the first time I've ever build an Ubuntu package, so please check. Also, I've added my name to the changelog, even though @gregoa Gregor Herrmann did the actual work, which is credited in the changelog. I don't care about getting credit for this, so feel free to change the changelog. There are also several other Ubuntu versions listed as "Needs triage" on https://ubuntu.com/security/CVE-2021-22204 (21.04, 20.10, 18.04). I don't have those running, so I cannot comment on those. ** Patch added: "patch for CVE-2021-22204" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libimage-exiftool-perl/+bug/1925985/+attachment/5503674/+files/libimage-exiftool-perl_11.88-1ubuntu1.debdiff -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1925985 Title: CVE-2021-22204 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libimage-exiftool-perl/+bug/1925985/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1925985] Re: CVE-2021-22204
Thank you Alex for your explanation. Below my conclusions after digging around to learn more about how exiftool ends up in Ubuntu. It seems that Ubuntu is using the debian version of libimage-exiftool- perl as-is. Therefore it was probably easy to get the fix released for Ubuntu 21.10 because it uses the same version of libimage-exiftool-perl as debian testing and unstable (12.16); that is, the debian patch could be used as-is. However, backporting the patch specifically for Ubuntu 20.04 (LTS) seems to be required, because Ubuntu 20.04 uses 11.88 and debian stable uses 11.16. Debian patched their 11.16, so maybe it is easy to apply that patch to 11.88 as well. I'm not really sure where that patch would need to go though. The debian team would have no use for it in their repository, so might not want it there. There is probably a mechanism to have Ubuntu specific patches on top of the debian ones. This patch procedure is probably described in the link you gave, so I'll have to read that more carefully. Contributing to Ubuntu packages is new to me, so I don't feel comfortable to commit to that yet, but I'm inclined to give it a try (if time permits).

The status of this bug says "Fix Released". How can one install this released fix on Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS (Focal Fossa)? The publicly available proof of concept arbitrary code execution on hackerone [1] works as-is on the latest exiftool (11.88-1) in the focal repositories. [Bug 1911055] Re: [modeset][nvidia] suspend/resume broken in nvidia-460 : Display engine push buffer channel allocation failed
I had the same issue in a ZBook G5 but interestingly enough I got this working. Some background: I had used the Nvidia drive 460 with success. However due to a small mishap, I had to reinstall Ubuntu. Second time around, though I go the error reported here. I tried installing the drives directly via the "Software & Updates -> Additional Driver" application and via the packages (never NVIDIAs scripts). But these did not work. But the following 2 steps seemed to get this doing: 1. Configure the use of the suspend and resume scripts shown here: https://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/460.39/README/powermanagement.html 2. Use the "Software & Updates -> Additional Driver" application but use the "NVIDIA Server Driver metapackage ... (proprietery)" and *not* the "NVIDIA driver metapackage ... (proprietary, tested)" Tests show both NVIDia profiles work now on resume. It would be interresting to get feedback from others. If this in fact does work, then one needs to know what is the diffference between the above two options. [Bug 1898902] [NEW] (doc?) locale-gen disagrees with locale(5)
Public bug reported: The LC_NUMERIC section of locale(5) includes: decimal_point followed by the string that will be used as the decimal delim- iter when formatting numeric quantities. .. without constraint on what the string may include. However locale-gen appears to reject any attempt to define decimal_point to a string longer than one character, with the message: LC_NUMERIC: value for field `decimal_point' must be a single character [error] LC_NUMERIC: field `decimal_point' not defined If that constraint is intended, I think locale(5) should specify it. (There may be a similar issue for thousands_sep, I didn't test that.) Found on bionic with locales-2.27-3ubuntu1.2, I did not check other releases. Motivation: I wanted to define a longer decimal_point so as to test the robustness of an application's number formatting. ** Affects: glibc (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1898902 Title: (doc?) locale-gen disagrees with locale(5) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glibc/+bug/1898902/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1832922] Re: cannot use growisofs to write iso image
For 'echo -n x"$IFS"x | od -c' I get: 000 x \t \n x 005 But based on your comments it seems quite likely I actually invoked it as '/dev/sr0 image.iso'. It is common to treat such things the same whether it's a single '='-separated argument to two separate arguments, and my cursory reading of the code suggested it intended to treat them the same. If the '=' is mandatory it is at certainly worth emphasising that in the docs. I'm reluctant to do stand-alone experiments for this since I have only a few blank disks, but I'll aim to check this again when I have another image to write. [Bug 1832922] [NEW] cannot use growisofs to write iso image

Instead it created a DVD which was not bootable; mounting it showed a single file "ubuntu_1.iso" clearly an 8.3-truncated version of the input filename. Along the way it showed what it was doing: genisoimage ubuntu-16.04.6-desktop-amd64.iso | builtin_dd of=/dev/sr0 obs=32k seek=0 .. so it looks like genisoimage is always getting called, and is creating a new iso image with the supplied iso as a simple file inside it. As a workaround, I found that replacing genisoimage with a symlink to /bin/cat allowed me to use the same growisofs invocation to create the bootable DVD I wanted. ** Affects: dvd+rw-tools (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1832922 Title: cannot use growisofs to write iso image To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/dvd+rw-tools/+bug/1832922/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1831686] [NEW] bionic install on new machine regularly crashing
Public bug reported: On this new machine, I'm getting regular arbitrary crashes usually within a few hours of boot. Syslog from what I believe is an example is below. Most commonly, it crashes in a firefox tab running a flash game (ITRTG from kongregate.com); the affected Web Content process then sits in a D state and cannot be killed (even by sudo kill -9, though that does change it to zombie state), while top continues to show it using 100% of a CPU. At this point, strace cannot attach to it and 'ps -eaf' will hang, as will exercises such as trying to cat /proc/$PID/cmdline. A hard reboot is the only thing that clears it: 'shutdown -r' or '-h' do not succeed. An update. I have update 18.04.2 with the 4.18 kernel. Still not working. Still have ACPI errors. Now I get error messages for thew USB ports - "can't set config". [Bug 1813007] Re: Unable to install new flows on compute nodes when having broken security group rules
Since this was public for about a month prior to making private, it doesn't seem worth keeping under embargo here. Getting this fixed quickly is preferable and opening it up publicly would allow more eyes on it and easier communication to help fix this. ** Description changed: - This issue is being treated as a potential security risk under embargo. - Please do not make any public mention of embargoed (private) security - vulnerabilities before their coordinated publication by the OpenStack - Vulnerability Management Team in the form of an official OpenStack - Security Advisory. This includes discussion of the bug or associated - fixes in public forums such as mailing lists, code review systems and - bug trackers. Please also avoid private disclosure to other individuals - not already approved for access to this information, and provide this - same reminder to those who are made aware of the issue prior to - publication. All discussion should remain confined to this private bug - report, and any proposed fixes should be added to the bug as - attachments. - It appears that we have found that neutron-openvswitch-agent appears to have a bug where two security group rules that have two different port ranges that overlap tied to the same parent security group will cause neutron to not be able to configure networks on the compute nodes where those security groups are present. Those are the broken security rules: https://pastebin.canonical.com/p/wSy8RSXt85/ Here is the log when we discovered the issue: https://pastebin.canonical.com/p/wvFKjNWydr/ ** Information type changed from Private Security to Public Security -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1813007 Title: Unable to install new flows on compute nodes when having broken security group rules To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/cloud-archive/+bug/1813007/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1805670] Re: 18.04 LTS - ACPI parsing errors in ZBook G5 Mobile Workstation: issues ex. suspend, touchpad
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: Some background information: I have a new Ubuntu 18.04 installation that did not go too well. The Live-USB installation would hang with ACPi related errors. I finally installed (barring a GRUB install error) using the acpi=off kernel flag. Thanks for your response but please can you tell me how can I check what is the responsible package ? Re: [Bug 1770442] Re: Suspend does not connect network
Thank you for your response Joseph I can not install an upstream kernel, because I use proprietary modules (Virtual Box, Nvidea), and I did not find any extra packages for the version, and as it is a production machine I will not risk it. Let's wait for the normal kernel update via distro repositories, I'm very grateful for your attention.
