[Bug 380211] Re: suspend often fails without any way to workaround

2009-07-14 Thread Ittay Dror
First, how can I reproduce it? Start working all day on the desktop cd?
I'm sure that if I just load it, and try to suspend everything will
work. And what happens when I reproduce? What information will it gather
for you to fix the issue?

Second, I think that the comment is an attempt to brush this issue
aside. The reason is that I did not open the bug asking for gnome-power-
manager to be fixed, instead I asked for tools that will let me work
around the issues that it has.

There is no reason why I should not be able to suspend my laptop in the
same sense I should always be able to shut it down. In both cases I risk
loosing data etc., but this is for me to decide.

So please, instead of asking me to reproduce a bug I did not ask to
solve, why not focus on giving me tools to work around it (or better
yet, analyze it, e.g., be able to say which application did not freeze)

I will not try to recreate the issue. There's no point in it.

[Bug 388818] [NEW] Enabling PAE support does not make the kernel use 4GB of memory

2009-06-17 Thread Ittay Dror
Public bug reported:

I followed the instructions in
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel/Compile#Alternate%20Build%20Method:%20The
%20Old-Fashioned%20Debian%20Way to compile the kernel based on 'generic'
configuration and added PAE support (CONFIG_X86_PAE=y). Based on
2.6.28-9 (jaunty)

When I reboot, the kernel still sees only 3GB.

Installing the 'server' version the kernel sees 4GB (but the server
version has other problems)

I use a thinkpad T61.

[Bug 388816] [NEW] suspend does not work if PAE is enabled in the kernel

2009-06-17 Thread Ittay Dror
Public bug reported:

To reproduce, follow the instructions in
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel/Compile#Alternate%20Build%20Method:%20The
%20Old-Fashioned%20Debian%20Way. Base it on the 'generic' kernel
(2.6.28-9)

Enable PAE (CONFIG_X86_PAE=y) through menuconfig.

After reboot to the new kernel, suspend stops working. Trying to suspend
causes X to crash and after it restarts suspend no longer does anything
except lock the screen.

No error messages in dmesg, /var/log/messages, X.log.0

it looks like the issue was using the 'server' kernel instead of

So what you are saying is that since everything is working fine for you,
then it means nothing is wrong with Linux and I have a perception
problem. So everything is fine with Linux if not for the perception
issue? I think not.

Btw, For some reason, I can't suspend to ram any more. Either X crashes
or nothing happens. I've opened a bug, but I can't say I'm holding my
breath.

I have been using linux for 12 years, the last 8 exclusively. And
professionally I've always used Unix / Linux. And I'm about to quit.

I have compiz disabled and I have 4 desktop applications running -

 total used free sharedbuffers cached
Mem: 404466427725561272108 0 476432 931564
-/+ buffers/cache:13645602680104
Swap: 2851496 108962840600

So 1.3GB is used.

These are the top memory consumers, broken down to private and shared
memory:
  8.9 MiB + 1.6 MiB = 10.5 MiBnm-applet
 10.5 MiB + 1.3 MiB = 11.7 MiBpython2.6 (2)
 13.5 MiB + 59.0 KiB = 13.6 MiBvmware-serverd
 22.6 MiB + 2.8 MiB = 25.5 MiBpidgin
 32.5 MiB + 3.6 MiB = 36.1 MiBXorg
247.1 MiB + 2.4 MiB = 249.5 MiBfirefox-3.5
295.4 MiB + 1.6 MiB = 297.0 MiBeclipse (2)
464.7 MiB + 2.4 MiB = 467.1 MiBthunderbird-bin

Running the same set of applications in windows doesn't take so much
memory. I have now running outlook, firefox, word, internet explorer,
emule and sketchup and the total used memory is 871MB.

Maybe it is a kernel panic?

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share

2009-05-27 Thread Ittay Dror
FWIW, here is my opinion why this bug is not on it's way of being
resolved.

Ever since Ubuntu 8.04 I have seen a regression in how usable the distribution
is for me:
1. It uses a lot of memory: I had to upgrade my memory recently since 2GB were
not enough for 4 applications (thunderbird, terminal, firefox and eclipse). My
computer at home, with 1GB of memory and Windows runs much more applications
without problem.
2. It is not stable: in 8.04 and 8.10 X used to crashed a lot. Now I get random
freezes of the laptop.
3. Many times it fails to suspend: I get no clear indication what interrupted
the suspension, and I have to wait every time to see if it manages to suspend
and if not, shut down (loose my state of work), and reboot later. In Windows I
can unplug the power line, put in my backpack and not worry.
4. Basic stuff like sound (pulseaudio) and fan cooling don't work properly.
5. Some things that are basic in Windows are hard to do in Ubuntu. For example,
how do I check my disk? In windows it is through a context menu, in Ubuntu I
have to create some file under '/'. And why do I have to reboot just to check?
Note that the fact that it automatically checks every 20 boots or so is not
good, since I don't want to reboot. ever.

[Bug 380211] [NEW] suspend often fails without any way to workaround

2009-05-25 Thread Ittay Dror
Public bug reported:

I have Jaunty on a T61 Thinkpad.

Often, when trying to suspend, the laptop will not suspend and after a
few seconds of black screen will return to normal operation with the
login screen to unlock.

Sometimes I get a message from gnome-power-manager (about vlc),
sometimes a log message in the screen that some processes refuse to
freeze.

Same thing if I try to hibernate.

The only thing I can do is shut down the laptop (otherwise it overheats
or exhausts the battery and then crashes). This obviously consumes much
of my time - need to wait to see that if the laptop manages to suspend,
if not, login, shutdown, then when I arrive to my destination, boot
(still a slow process, despite the work done for Jaunty), launch all my
apps. this means that if i go to a client i always need to reserve a 10
minute buffer just for this procedure. It is worse if I'm in a hurry and
forget to make sure the laptop suspended ok only to discover later it
crashed.

In general, I understand that suspending may be a tricky business that can
cause processes to fail if not properly done (though I don't remember having
such problems in Windows). However, I think the process can be greatly improved:
1. if the freeze fails, why give me the unlock screen?
2. i want a gui wizard that will allow me to manage those processes that
prevent suspend - see who they are have a choice to kill them and try again
(have a choice of a counter that will automatically do that if i don't click
something within X seconds), configure which processes i want to automatically
kill the next time this happens, and how to restart them, etc.
3. improve things like gnome-power-manager so that applications do not prevent
it from suspending (sometimes, killing it and restarting causes suspend to work
fine, which suggests the problem is with gnome-power-manager)

But I'm not sure this is a vte issue.

I'm seeing slowness in Emacs also.

Maybe something to do with font/text handling in Gnome?

[Bug 372697] [NEW] sudo is slow in jaunty

2009-05-06 Thread Ittay Dror
Public bug reported:

I have thinkpad t61 which i've upgraded from 8.10 to jaunty.

I have enabled my finger reader in the past and it worked great in 8.10

after the upgrade these things happened:
1. it takes 6 seconds from the time i write 'sudo cmd' until i get a prompt for
the password.
2. i need to swipe my finger 3 times before it accepts it.
3. if i make a mistake in the password, several seconds pass till the 'sorry'
message and several more till i get the prompt for password again.

[Bug 372694] [NEW] gnome terminal GUI (when using ssh) is very slow

2009-05-06 Thread Ittay Dror
Public bug reported:

after upgrading to jaunty, gnome terminal started being very slow when
scrolling contents of tabs. this seems to manifest itself in tabs where
there's an ssh to another machine (though i can't figure why). scrolling
takes 100% of a core (i have thinkpad t61 with dual core).

also, hitting on the scroll area, above or below the bar, should normall
scroll a page. now it scrolls several (which means that if i want to
scroll a page i need to click the small arrows at the end of the scroll
area multiple times)

finally, in many cases, clicking on a tab (with the attempt to switch to
that tab) detaches the tab into a standalone window. very annoying.

[Bug 98783] Re: MASTER: memory leak

2009-01-18 Thread Ittay Dror
while knowing very little about X, I think in general, it would be nice
if pixmaps were associated with the process that requested them (maybe
by just having the process associate a constant label with the pixmaps
it uses). then it would be possible to write a utility named pixmaptop
and also to cleanup pixmaps (even if not automatically, at least
manually), and also to have something like sar to show usage trends
(memory leaks)

[Bug 297048] [NEW] fan speed constantly low

2008-11-11 Thread Ittay Dror
Public bug reported:

I have a ThinkPad T61

After upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10 the fan constantly works at low speed.

/proc/acpi/ibm/fan shows enabled and even reports fan speeds (up to
3500), yet I can't detect any changes in speed (and i also think speeds
should go higher).

Echoing levels to /proc/acpi/ibm/fan changes the values of speed, but
there's no physical change.

I tried tpfand, fancontrol, the 'watchdog' command. i disabled all
before trying the above.

The result is that when the laptop has intensive CPU work, its
temperature raises (normally it is ~50c)

[Bug 98783] Re: MASTER: memory leak

2008-09-23 Thread Ittay Dror
i have this issue. closing firefox, and other desktop apps does not
help. X remains 408MB (after starting at 80MB). almost all of this
memory is private (not shared libraries etc.). I've tried using
MOZ_DISABLE_IMAGE_OPTIMIZE, but it didn't seem to make a change.

xrestop does not show a lot of pixmap memory used (only 7.6MB total).

so x is taking a lot of memory, that isn't pixmaps memory

[Bug 229876] [NEW] Problem with bash completion

2008-05-13 Thread Ittay Dror
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: bash

see http://www.nabble.com/Fwd%3A-Problem-with-bash-completion-
tt16019987.html (initial message pasted below)

this happens to me (and i'm pretty sure that in a different scenario
than the one described below) and is very annoying. can you please
update the bash package to the one where this bug doesn't happen?

from the thread:
From: David Rothenberger
Subject: Problem with bash completion

Sometimes bash gets confused and starts adding a slash at the end of
files when I do tab-completion. Here's a simple reproduction script:

~ > bash --noprofile --norc -i
bash-3.2$ mkdir /tmp/bash-problem
bash-3.2$ cd /tmp/bash-problem
bash-3.2$ mkdir d
bash-3.2$ touch x
bash-3.2$ chmod 755 x
bash-3.2$ ./x< tab after x completes correctly
bash-3.2$ ./d/ < ditto with d
bash: ./d/: is a directory
bash-3.2$ "$(ls ./d/)" < pressed tab after d
bash: : command not found
bash-3.2$ ./x/ < tab after x now adds slash

Once the shell starts doing this, it keeps doing it. Restarting bash
solves the problem.
