[Bug 380211] Re: suspend often fails without any way to workaround
First, how can I reproduce it? Start working all day on the desktop cd? I'm sure that if I just load it, and try to suspend everything will work. And what happens when I reproduce? What information will it gather for you to fix the issue? Second, I think that the comment is an attempt to brush this issue aside. The reason is that I did not open the bug asking for gnome-power- manager to be fixed, instead I asked for tools that will let me work around the issues that it has. There is no reason why I should not be able to suspend my laptop in the same sense I should always be able to shut it down. In both cases I risk loosing data etc., but this is for me to decide. So please, instead of asking me to reproduce a bug I did not ask to solve, why not focus on giving me tools to work around it (or better yet, analyze it, e.g., be able to say which application did not freeze) I will not try to recreate the issue. There's no point in it. -- suspend often fails without any way to workaround https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/380211 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1] Re: Microsoft has a majority market share
FWIW, here is my opinion why this bug is not on it's way of being resolved. Ever since Ubuntu 8.04 I have seen a regression in how usable the distribution is for me: 1. It uses a lot of memory: I had to upgrade my memory recently since 2GB were not enough for 4 applications (thunderbird, terminal, firefox and eclipse). My computer at home, with 1GB of memory and Windows runs much more applications without problem. 2. It is not stable: in 8.04 and 8.10 X used to crashed a lot. Now I get random freezes of the laptop. 3. Many times it fails to suspend: I get no clear indication what interrupted the suspension, and I have to wait every time to see if it manages to suspend and if not, shut down (loose my state of work), and reboot later. In Windows I can unplug the power line, put in my backpack and not worry. 4. Basic stuff like sound (pulseaudio) and fan cooling don't work properly. 5. Some things that are basic in Windows are hard to do in Ubuntu. For example, how do I check my disk? In windows it is through a context menu, in Ubuntu I have to create some file under '/'. And why do I have to reboot just to check? Note that the fact that it automatically checks every 20 boots or so is not good, since I don't want to reboot. ever. -- Microsoft has a majority market share https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 380211] [NEW] suspend often fails without any way to workaround
Public bug reported: I have Jaunty on a T61 Thinkpad. Often, when trying to suspend, the laptop will not suspend and after a few seconds of black screen will return to normal operation with the login screen to unlock. Sometimes I get a message from gnome-power-manager (about vlc), sometimes a log message in the screen that some processes refuse to freeze. Same thing if I try to hibernate. The only thing I can do is shut down the laptop (otherwise it overheats or exhausts the battery and then crashes). This obviously consumes much of my time - need to wait to see that if the laptop manages to suspend, if not, login, shutdown, then when I arrive to my destination, boot (still a slow process, despite the work done for Jaunty), launch all my apps. this means that if i go to a client i always need to reserve a 10 minute buffer just for this procedure. It is worse if I'm in a hurry and forget to make sure the laptop suspended ok only to discover later it crashed. In general, I understand that suspending may be a tricky business that can cause processes to fail if not properly done (though I don't remember having such problems in Windows). However, I think the process can be greatly improved: 1. if the freeze fails, why give me the unlock screen? 2. i want a gui wizard that will allow me to manage those processes that prevent suspend - see who they are have a choice to kill them and try again (have a choice of a counter that will automatically do that if i don't click something within X seconds), configure which processes i want to automatically kill the next time this happens, and how to restart them, etc. 3. improve things like gnome-power-manager so that applications do not prevent it from suspending (sometimes, killing it and restarting causes suspend to work fine, which suggests the problem is with gnome-power-manager) ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- suspend often fails without any way to workaround https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/380211 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 297048] Re: fan speed constantly low
i can't use the laptop for any serious work. if i try to compile something, after 1 minute the temperature of the cpu hits 95C. meaning, i have to stop the compilation to let it cool down. any information will be helpful. -- fan speed constantly low https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/297048 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 297048] [NEW] fan speed constantly low
Public bug reported: I have a ThinkPad T61 After upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10 the fan constantly works at low speed. /proc/acpi/ibm/fan shows enabled and even reports fan speeds (up to 3500), yet I can't detect any changes in speed (and i also think speeds should go higher). Echoing levels to /proc/acpi/ibm/fan changes the values of speed, but there's no physical change. I tried tpfand, fancontrol, the 'watchdog' command. i disabled all before trying the above. The result is that when the laptop has intensive CPU work, its temperature raises (normally it is ~50c) ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- fan speed constantly low https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/297048 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 98783] Re: MASTER: memory leak
i have this issue. closing firefox, and other desktop apps does not help. X remains 408MB (after starting at 80MB). almost all of this memory is private (not shared libraries etc.). I've tried using MOZ_DISABLE_IMAGE_OPTIMIZE, but it didn't seem to make a change. xrestop does not show a lot of pixmap memory used (only 7.6MB total). so x is taking a lot of memory, that isn't pixmaps memory -- MASTER: memory leak https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/98783 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 229876] [NEW] Problem with bash completion
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: bash see http://www.nabble.com/Fwd%3A-Problem-with-bash-completion- tt16019987.html (initial message pasted below) this happens to me (and i'm pretty sure that in a different scenario than the one described below) and is very annoying. can you please update the bash package to the one where this bug doesn't happen? from the thread: From: David Rothenberger Subject: Problem with bash completion Sometimes bash gets confused and starts adding a slash at the end of files when I do tab-completion. Here's a simple reproduction script: ~ > bash --noprofile --norc -i bash-3.2$ mkdir /tmp/bash-problem bash-3.2$ cd /tmp/bash-problem bash-3.2$ mkdir d bash-3.2$ touch x bash-3.2$ chmod 755 x bash-3.2$ ./x< tab after x completes correctly bash-3.2$ ./d/ < ditto with d bash: ./d/: is a directory bash-3.2$ "$(ls ./d/)" < pressed tab after d bash: : command not found bash-3.2$ ./x/ < tab after x now adds slash Once the shell starts doing this, it keeps doing it.
