I've now tried the nouveau driver and it works. That is, I can see the launcher bar and the top bar. I have the same problem on a Dell Precision M65 with nVidia Corporation G72GL [Quadro FX 350M] (rev a1) graphics card. I've had this problem since Beta 1 and still after the upgrade to Beta 2 with nvidia-current-270.41.03. Both Unity and Gnome Classic fails. However, Unity-2D and Gnome Classic (no effects) works. So I guess it is compiz related somehow. I'm also experiencing this bug, and I managed to narrow the problem down to the initrd image being the problem. I can boot the new kernel 2.6.32-16-generic-pae using the initrd from 2.6.32-14-generic-pae (with expected warnings). I've now tested with several different themes and the following causes firefox when the download dialog opens: Gray Neutrino Redmond ThinIce And to clarify, it is enough to change the controls.
