[Bug 178324] Re: Login screen appears twice in (X)Ubuntu Hardy

2008-07-03 Thread J.C. Steele
We have a lab in an academic setting of about 20 computers - they all
seem to be replicating this behavior. My personal laptop was doing it
for awhile, but then it quit - so I thought an update took care of it,
but it appears the lab (fully updated Ubuntu 8.04) is still encountering
the problemall machines are Dell Optiplex GX270's.

[Bug 141001] Re: gtk-window-decorator does not react to GNOME DPI changes

2008-05-29 Thread J.C. Steele
Still an issue for me (slightly)gdm is not fixed (logging in),
however upon logging in everything works, EXCEPT for applications such
as r-base when plotting graphics, etc. The solution for me is to adjust
gdm.conf through System-Administration-Login
Window-Security-Configure X Server and adding -dpi 96 to the end of
the line Command

Same chipset as Zakalwe . Of note, running glxgears and moving the
window gives bug similar too

this is ongoing issue, but thought I would mention it for my chipset.

[Bug 145787] Window titlebar large after gutsy beta installation

2007-09-27 Thread J.C. Steele
Public bug reported:

Upon installing the gutsy beta, the titlebar of all windows are
extremely large, and the font size is extremely large. At first I did
not know what todo, but eventually I figured out that the default
resolution gutsy started in was 1024x768 instead of the correct value of
1280x800. This did not initially fix the problem, so I disabled the
extra effects (compiz/beryl) which fixed the problem, the restarted the
desktop extra effects with no problem, including the additional effects.
Settings relating to the theme/appearance show the correct font size on
the titlebar, and switching themes had no effect on the problem.

My system is running on a Toshiba Satelite A105-S4134 with an intel
video card and 15 widescreen LCD, and you can view the screenshot of
the large titlebar below.

Just installed the gutsy beta and have this same exact problem...volume
is audible, but extremely low. I experienced this problem in feisty as
well. Seems to be same exact problem I had in feisty, but was fixed

[Bug 113278] Re: Touchpad default settings are horrible

2007-09-26 Thread J.C. Steele
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 47971 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/47971

To elaborate on HG's original comments, on my synaptic touchpad in
windows I get superb movement, sensitivity, and clicking - even without
the synaptic touchpad driver installed - when it is installed I get
extremely excellent movement and can tweak my heart out. When switching
to ubuntu, the default behavior seems to be a little worse (the
sensitivity is off for my tastes compared with windows, etc.) but its
definitely workable...what is not workable is the sole aspect of
scrolling, which by default without the synaptic touchpad driver
installed is non-existent. However, when enabling the touchpad driver
and setting it up properly, scrolling works fine...everything else at
that point is messed up (sensitivity is way too high, tapping actions
are horrible, especially when double clicking which can require
sometimes 2-3 tries to get an application/icon/folder/etc. to open, and
the general feel has changed dramatically) By reading some
documentation you are basically told to a) play with xorg.conf to adjust
settings or b) use a gui program or command line program to adjust
settings in real time. The problem I find with both of these routes is
that the number of variables to adjust in xorg.conf is astounding and
basically impossible to get a working solution, and the gui solutions
available fall short of giving enough options to the user (most give
acceleration, sensitivity, and ability to turn options on or off (like
tapping disable). No matter how many settings I have tried, how many
different configurations I have tried, nothing seems to come close to
replicating the functionality I get in windows...providing the synaptic
touchpad driver and some configuration utility to enable it would be
very handy, as well as having a gui configuration program that is
intelligent enough to give me the configuration options I need would be
excellent. Also, any information I find on the synaptic touchpad driver
for linux seems horribly out of date...is it still being developed?
perhaps if not, that would be a starting point...I could certainly live
with a restricted driver notice (similar to my wireless card) telling me
to enable the driver if one could be obtained from a non-free source.
