I'm using Kubuntu Edgy. This problem persists with kernel 2.6.17-12 with Upstart 02.7-7 or sysvinit 2.86. With no splash, I will get a restart message similar to the one posted above and the system hangs. With the splash my system hangs after the status bar is cleared.
